proven to work on numerous successful

projects, to the satisfaction of architect,

engineer, contractor and building owner.

market expanded rapidly in the UK. Fixfast have a long

association with the flat roofing market starting from the

1970’s, and have kept ahead of the demands of a fast

Quality TestingFixfast products undergo a quality testing programme that is

designed to ensure they perform to our exacting specifications.

Batch testing is carried out at our advanced in house facility

where product dimensions, drilling performance, micro-

hardness and corrosion resistance are rigorously checked.

We also work with industry accredited testing companies. This

means that we can provide accredited independent results for

special projects or applications.

ISO 9001/ISO 14001We work to the latest ISO 9001 quality standard, and ISO

14001 environmental management system standard, and we

are currently completing the certification process.

Performance FiguresPerformance figures and specifications for Fixfast products are

published in our datasheets and can be found on our website.

With our own in house testing, we are also able to perform

specific application testing, where standard published results

are not available.

Fasteners for every substrate

There are a variety of deck substrates in flat roofing construction and Fixfast

has specifically developed fasteners to suit each application. Careful design

and specification of drillpoint, thread formation and other features ensure

that the fastener will perform in application.

Although the majority of flat roofing projects have a standard metal, timber or

concrete deck as the substrate, there is always the occasional difficult

application. These include substrates such as woodwool slab, or very thin

decks. For these applications, call the Fixfast technical sales team on

The Global fastening system offers an excellent range of specialist

fasteners for mechanically fastening membrane or insulation to

steel, aluminium, concrete and timber decks. Through close

liaison with roof system manufacturers worldwide, and by

understanding contractor needs, the Global fastener range has

been developed to provide simple, speedy and thermally efficient

fastener solutions.

Traditionally, flat roofs were fixed using the metal fastener and

plate combination. However, this transmits heat from the inside

of the building to the outside atmosphere through the fastener,

which seriously reduces the thermal efficiency of the building.

The Fixfast tube washer practically eliminates all thermal

transmittance by using a polypropylene tube washer, creating a

thermal break in the fastener build-up. This can mean reduced

insulation thickness and therefore lower costs than the

traditional method.

Thermal transmittance – The tube washerprinciple

The Global tube system has been specifically

designed to overcome the cold bridging effect of

mechanical fastenings. Due to the thermal

properties of Global tube washers, U-value

calculations are greatly simplified as no correction

factors or penalties need to be considered. This

not only saves time at the design stage, but also

prevents any increase in material costs incurred

by thicker insulation requirements.

With the increasing demands of building

regulations, the cold-bridging effect of fasteners

has become a critical issue. The Building

Regulations Part L – Conservation of Fuel and

Power – states that where an insulation is

penetrated by mechanical fasteners, a correction

factor (or penalty) must be added to the U-value

of the roof system. The design of a flat roof

system, therefore, must incorporate this

correction factor and yet still remain below the

maximum permissible U-value. This means that,

in many cases, an increased thickness of

insulation may be required to compensate for the

cold bridging effect of the fasteners. The

correction factor (U) for the penetration of an

insulation layer by mechanical fasteners can be

calculated using the formula within BS EN ISO

6946 Annex D.

The Global tube washer system is

a combination of a high quality

used separately for certain

applications. As well as creating

the thermal break, the combination

means that our standard range is

suitable for fixing a roof build-up of

up to 590mm, allowing for the

increasing insulation thicknesses

that are now specified.
