IS 6-WATTS ENOUGH TO POWER YOUR

TEAM?

FA N TA S Y F R E A KO

Hi and welcome to the pre-season edition of the Fantasy Freako’s rave for 2018. With the JLT Community Series done and dusted, our attention now turns to the H&A rounds as we frantically put the finishing touches to our starting side. Like every year, there will be a host of names without a match under their belt led by Tom Rockliff

and Gary Ablett this year.

Looking ahead to the season opener, the ruck department is always a hot topic of discussion and this will form the nucleus of the feature. I’ll dissect the pre-season numbers and nominate my starting rucks for the year.

Also, as an added bonus, I’ve included some key numbers across several statistical measures to provide further evidence of the form players.

Enjoy the pre-season edition and best of luck for the opening round of the season.

The start of a season is something we all look forward to as fantasy coaches. But, the one position we are often split on at this stage of the year is the ruck department. Do we opt for the ‘set and forget’ option, or do we look for value instead? Or do we just pick the highest scorer from the previous year and build our rucks around him? All valid questions, but essentially, we are only filling two on field spots.

Unfortunately, there is no Jarrod Witts to turn to as a cut-price starting option. We do have Scott Lycett who should play even with Nic Naitanui returning from injury, but we can’t pick him based on his ruck numbers alone. Lycett’s hitout win rate of 34% was the third-worst of the top-20 rucks in the league for contests attended during the pre-season. We can safely put a line through him.

Brodie Grundy is durable and consistent, but the addition of Mason Cox has muddied the waters. He matched Grundy for both disposals and points scored across the JLT Community Series, despite Grundy attending 72 more contests across both games.

TAPPING INTO THE ART OF RUCKMEN

Brad Scott handed Todd Goldstein and Braydon Preuss one half each in the final pre-season match, and the coach’s indecision could turn some away from Goldy. He dominated in a half against Richmond with 65 points from just 42% game time and has to be in the mix.

Last year’s top-scorer, Matthew Kreuzer, succumbed to injury early in the final pre-season match and is now under an injury cloud ahead of the blockbuster clash against reigning premier Richmond. The Blues are confident that he’ll be fit, but considering his lofty price tag, he may not provide the greatest value.

Last year’s big improver, Toby Nankervis, has stormed into contention after a 108-point haul against the Kangaroos. He relished the opportunity to lead the Tigers’ ruck division last year, with his defensive play a strength, ranking third in the AFL for tackles among rucks. Despite losing his DPP status, he’s a safe option to start with.

In terms of my starting rucks, I have opted for Max Gawn, as has 44% of the entire competition. He

has ticked every box this pre-season, ranking No.1 in the league for both ruck contests attended and hitouts, while ranking second overall for disposals.

Partnering Gawn will be Stefan Martin. He won 12 more disposals than any other ruckman in the competition, ranking fourth for hitouts and sixth for contests attended. In fact, since 2014, he has racked up 128 more disposals than any other player, despite playing 11 fewer H&A games than

the second-ranked Sam Jacobs. Even with Archie Smith hovering in the background, I’m confident that Martin will shine.

Below is a detailed analysis of the JLT Community Series.

GEELONG CATS• All the talk has been about the big three at Geelong, but MitchDuncan could be the best option of the lot.
