In the ResortThe Aqueduct TrailThis flat, freshly sheeted trail is the starting point for many hikes out of Falls Creek. Flanking the Resort’s iconic aqueducts, the trail passes through the top of the village & accesses hiking and cross country bike trails.

Getting There:Village Bowl – From the tennis courts take the access track to the right of the Summit Chairlift.Village – From Schuss street follow Ory’s Trail opposite Milch.Slalom Plaza – Follow the Falls Express Chairlift line onto Wombats Ramble (wide grassy ski run). Continue uphill until

the aqueduct trail intersects.

Rocky Valley LakeAustralia’s highest lake (1,600m) is perfect for a relaxing walk, picnic, fishing or a dip in the clear blue waters. It is the stage for some of the Resort’s most popular Summer events and a great feature of Falls Creek’s natural beauty.

Getting There:From the Village, Head left along the Aqueduct Trail (East)left as it curves its way into grassy woodland and crosses the Bogong High Plains Road. Falls Creek FallsThese falls are just a short walk from the entrance to the village. Completely scorched by the 2003 bushfires, this area demonstrates the regenerative ability of the alpine flora. The falls are also a great place for a dip after a long mountain walk.

Getting There:From the Gully Carpark head through the village entrance towards Mt Beauty. After 150m the trail-head begins on the right-hand side of the road via steep steps into the valley.

Wishing WellThis moderate trek brings you to a small pool at the end of the aqueduct, affectionately known as the “Wishing Well”. Return from this point or continue along to a viewpoint overlooking Mt Spion Kopje.

Getting There:Access the Aqueduct Trail and follow it to the right (West) above the village and past the Village Bowl. It will soon narrow to a single track as you get closer to the Wishing Well.

Walking on Water TailTake in Falls Creek’s renowned Cross Country ski trails and Nordic Bowl with spectacular panoramic views of Rocky Valley Lake.

Getting There:From Slalom Plaza head up Wombats Ramble until you pass the Aqueduct Trail. Follow ‘Aitken’s Trail’ left until the Pipeline Trail appears, again to the left. This will cross McKay/Pretty Valley Road and lead to the Rocky Valley Lake Foreshore. Return home via the Nordic Bowl and Aqueduct Trail.

Home and Away Trail

Hike the Falls Creek Summit via this High Plains trail. During selected dates you can avoid the initial climb by riding the Summit Chairlift. You can also try the Frying Pan Spur Extension.

Getting There:Begin your walk at Ory’s Trail (entrance opposite Milch on Schuss St) uphill beyond the brown tank and onto the old Summit Home Trail. A steep and rocky climb, this winds uphill for 1km to the top of the Summit Chairlift. Look for the markers leading past the Ski Patrol hut, the end of the snow fence and to a T-intersection at the end of the undulating trail. Veer right across the rocky plateau and downhill to the “Wishing Well” and Aqueduct Trail return.

Frying Pan Spur Extension:To get a little more out of your hike, take this side trip left at the T-interection. Less than 1km each way, Frying Pan Spur gives some truly spectacular views.

Mountain & Castle Trail

A great Summer trek, this trail takes you past Sun Valley and some of Falls Creek’s most popular ski runs to the base of Mt McKay. Another great feature of this hike is passing the columnar outcrop of basalt rock from which Ruined Castle draws its name.

Getting There:Begin at Ory’s Trail and head off as per the Home and Away Trail until reaching a fork halfway up the old Summit Home Trail (between Eagle and Summit Chairlift lines). Turn left and follow the trail markers until you reach Pretty Valley Road. Bearing right, you will soon see a trail to the left which leads to the top of Ruined Castle Chairlift and its rocky features. Continue uphill to the base of Mt McKay.

FishingThe Falls Creek region is renowned for its excellent Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing. We’re also excited at the release of Chinook Salmon into Rocky Valley lake this Summer (although they will need another year before being large enough to fish). Boat ramps allow for launching of small boats on either side of the Dam Wall. There are also great spots for fly fishing at Rocky Valley Lake, Pretty Valley Lake (head up the Pretty Valley/Mt McKay Road near the Nordic Bowl) and in the village aqueducts.

PhotogaphyThe Alpine National Park’s natural environment is a photographer’s paradise. Falls Creek offers specialised camps with expert tuition from renowned photographer Charlie Brown on selected dates through the warmer months. The challenging grades and 1,600m+ altitude makes the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road ideal for cyclists from the amateur sightseer through to the elite professional. The pristine alpine views certainly don’t harm the experience either!

A series of profiled routes out of Falls Creek allow you to make your ride as long or as short as you like. Check the following pages for maps and profiles on each ride.

For more relaxing rides, try heading out past the Lake towards Omeo. Those after a challenge will be right at home tackling the climb from Mt Beauty or the full 235km Alpine Loop. This is the course for the Scody 3 Peaks Challenge which is hosted by Falls Creek each year on the Labour Day long weekend in March.

Mountain Biking

Mountain bikers get excited. For the past two years Falls Creek has been busy developing a series of new mountain biking trails integrated into the Resort’s ski fields and mountain terrain. This Summer will see the grand opening of the first four new trails with more trails still to come over the next 2 years.

Adding to the existing trail network in 2014 are three new cross country tracks and one heart-stopping downhill bash. The XC trails include a connection from the “Wishing Well” to the Gully plus two massive loops near Wombat’s Ramble (that can be taken uphill or down). The downhill track is a fast belt on International into the Bowl. You can see the trails in full on the map within this guide.

Over Summer a bike shuttle service will operate on weekends to access the trailheads. You can also get lifted access to the top when the Summit Chairlift runs on Event dates.

Page 30: Falls Creek Insiders Guide - Summer 2013 14

Road CyclingLangfords GapTake a leisurely ride past the Nordic Bowl and over the Rocky Valley Dam wall. This ride is perfect for beginners or those wanting to just take it easy.

Mt Beauty RideSpend a morning or afternoon heading down to Mount Beauty. This ride takes in pretty Bogong Village and a crossing over the East Kiewa River, plus some flat stretches to catch your breath.

Blue Duck RunA favourite for all Falls Creek regulars is lunch at the historic Blue Duck Inn at Anglers Rest. Take in Trapyard Gap and the Bogong High Plains before your destination on the banks of the Cobungra River. Organise a pickup or make it a 95km loop with the return leg.

Falls to BrightContinue through Mt Beauty and take on the challenging “Tawonga Gap” - a steep, steady climb with dramatic lookouts over Bogong and Mt Beauty and a fast descent to Bright and its great shops and cafes.

The Alpine LoopThe ultimate challenge - a 235km loop returning to Falls Creek through the Alpine National Park. As the setting for the Scody 3 Peaks Challenge, this ride is not for the faint-hearted or the unprepared. Taking it on is an incredible challenge but the satisfaction is just reward for those who finish.

Mountain BikingHistoric Huts TrailTake a picnic or sightseeing tour of some of the oldest High Country huts in the region. This ride incorporates Wallace’s Hut, Cope Hut and Rover Chalet via a relatively flat and grassy trail.

Getting There: Begin at Langfords Gap - 4km beyond the Dam Wall. Head right along the aqueduct (Langford West) and past the power supply hut. On the right Wallace’s Track deviates to Wallace’s Hut. Return along the same path and continue right towards Cope Hut.

Mt McKay LoopA great ride for fit bikers, taking you to the highest drivable point in Australia (1849m) and the columnar basalt rock structures at Ruined Castle.

Getting There: Head toward Rocky Valley Lake, turning off the road at the sign for Pretty Valley/ Mt McKay. At Pretty Valley take the right hand fork onto the loop with Mt McKay diverting off halfway through.

Tawonga Huts RunMake a day of this ride with a technical yet rewarding haul through Pretty Valley and Ruined Castle to the scenic Tawonga Huts.

Getting There: Take the same route as the Mt McKay Loop until the fork in road. Bear left onto Pretty Valley Road and a fire trail will lead you beyond Pretty Valley Lake until a steep climb to the Tawonga Huts.

Marum Point ParalyserA free-flowing trail through regenerating fire-damaged snowgums with a variant to Mt Nelse for the mad hill climbers (and a wild ride down!)

Getting There: Start at Watchbed Creek (2km past the Dam Wall) and head left along the Marum Point track. The Mt Nelse variant is left at the Australian Alpine Walking Track or you can continue around the loop. Turn right at the aqueduct to return via Langfords Gap.

MTB Trails2013/14 is an exciting time for Mountain Biking at Falls Creek with the unveiling of new cross country and downhill trails developed over the past two years. Every weekend in Summer and (most of) Autumn you can access the trails via a new bike shuttle service. Major event weekends will also see the Summit Chair in operation for even quicker access to the top.

Aqueduct TrailThe iconic Aqueduct Trail has had a facelift, completely resheeted from Rocky Valley Lake to the Wishing Well. A flat and gentle ride, this cross country trail is perfect for any ability.

International DH 1Beginning at the top of the Summit, this rampaging downhill is a heartstopping ride down International - a true Winter favourite. Cutting off the line before the Gully, it winds its way into the Bowl to finish at the base of the Summit Chair.

Gully XCConnecting the Aqueduct Trail to the Gully is this new cross country trail - a gentle downhill XC from the Wishing Well to the base of the Gully Chair.

Wombats XC 1 / XC 2An expansive singletrack network winding in and around the Wombats Ramble area. Technically a cross country trail, It can be ridden as two separate loops (bordered by the Aqueduct Trail) or as one massive loop between Pretty Valley Road and the base of Falls Express. It features some great downhill elements and can be navigated either uphill or downhill.
