THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT HILOHEADCOUNT ENROLLMENT, FALL 2003

Headcount enrollment at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo measured 3,300 for Fall 2003, anincrease of 8.6% over Fall 2002 and the highest enrollment in the history of the campus(Table 1 and Figures 1 & 2). Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollment grew 9.1%, to 2,784,the highest FTE enrollment on record (Table 2). Since Fall 1997, headcount enrollmenthas increased 25.0%, and FTE enrollment has increased 28.1%.

For Fall 2003, Ka Haka ‘Ula O Ke‘elikolani had the largest increase in percentage terms ofany college, at 25.6%, while the other colleges posted moderate increases (Table 3). InOctober 2003, the School of Business and Economics became a separate college.Historical data in the tables have been adjusted accordingly.

In Fall 2003, the UH four-year campuses migrated to a new student registration system. One result was a large increase in the number of enrollment records with unusable datafor certain fields, including: citizenship, major, education level, education objective andpermanent home address. The reader is advised to exercise caution when examiningtrends or using percentage data.

With the migration to a new student registration system in Fall 2003, ethnic reporting hasbeen expanded to include additional Asian and Pacific Islander categories (Tables 3, 4 &7). However, only new students are included in these new categories; students alreadyenrolled are shown under the ethnic category previously selected.

Other Fall 2003 enrollment highlights:

! Entering undergraduate student enrollment increased 9.3% in Fall 2003, to1,270, the highest level on record (Figure 3). Undergraduate transferenrollment increased 12.3% to 677, also the highest level on record (Table3). First-Time freshmen enrollment was about the same as the previous fallsemester. Returning undergraduates increased 25% to 145.

! Students with neighbor island local addresses have increased in recentyears, and measured 4.7% of total enrollment in Fall 2003 (Figure 4). Thismeasure may reflect increased delivery of instruction via distance education.

! Enrollment of non-resident students, as measured by tuition status, hasincreased markedly in recent years (Table 3 & Figure 5). Enrollment in theWestern Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program has grown from 59 in Fall1997 to 512 in Fall 2003, and now accounts for 41% of all non-residentenrollment. Non-Resident, non-exempt enrollment has also increasedsubstantially, from 250 in Fall 1999 to 405 in Fall 2003.

! In Fall 2003, 79.4% of the students at UH Hilo were enrolled full-time, thehighest level on record (Figure 7). Women continue to comprise over 60%of total enrollment (Figure 8). The Mean Age of students continues to declineslowly, measuring 25.4 years in Fall 2003 (Figure 9). The ethnic make-up ofthe student body continues to diversify (Figure 10).
