4. Explain the differences between synthetic ropes and natural-fiber ropes. Discuss which types of rope are suitable for pioneering work and why. Include the following in your discussion: breaking strength, safe working loads, and the care and storage of rope.

5. Explain the uses for the back splice, eye splice, and short splice. Using 1/4- or 3/8-inch three-stranded rope, demonstrate how to form each splice.

Each patrol will register as either

a Survivor patrol or A Pioneer patrol.

Troops will eat breakfast together both days. Each patrol will register as a pioneer or survival patrol. Pioneers will camp and eat at the troop site. They can use stoves or whatever. Survivor patrols are to have everything with them at opening flags Saturday to survive the next ~24 hours, this includes Lunch and Dinner. They cannot use commercially made stoves of any kind. Patrol gear can be distributed among the members. They are not permitted to return to the troop campsite nor have things brought to them until Sunday morning. Commercially made tarps or shelters of any kind will cause points to be deducted. * Each patrol is required to attend 3 classes or demos within the day to qualify for top patrol.

Survivor Patrols Survivor Patrols will stay overnight in their improvised shelters and must prepare lunch and dinner in their Survival Site. They may not return to their troop camp site for any reason after they are led to their survival site. Be Prepared!

Survivor patrols need to carry all required equipment for ~24h period to opening flags. This includes meals and camp site equipment. No Survivor patrol can return to troop camp site for missing equipment after opening flags. Each leader defined as survivor patrol member will earn extra points for that patrol. If all troop leaders are defined as survivor patrol members, every patrol of that troop will earn extra points.

Pioneer Patrols Pioneer Patrols will participate in all activities from their troop camp site. The only real difference is that they do not stay in improvised shelters Saturday night. Pioneer patrols do not qualify for the Survivor Patrol award.

Equipment allowed at site: Flash Lights Wood poles Sleeping bags Personal rain gear

NOT ALLOWED Tents or other man made shelters Stoves Tarps Chairs Sleeping pads / cots Hammocks

Generic List for a Patrol: Patrol Survival Pack – Each patrol should carry a pack contacting basic survival tools and equipment. Contents of the pack should be decided by the entire patrol and selected to improve event performance. Each patrols pack will be judged and evaluated one of the event stations.

Suggested List of Items: Pocketknife First-aid kit Extra clothing Rain gear Water bottle Flashlight Trail food Fire starting devices Sun protection Signal devices Water purification equipment Bug spray Food for Lunch and Dinner

Events: Stations will be judged at camp sites.

Shelter Building – One of the basic needs for wilderness survival is a shelter. The shelter is to provide protection from the elements. This is not a timed shelter building contest; patrols will construct a shelter capable of housing their entire patrol and personal sleep shelters. Each shelter will be tested for its ability to withstand wind and rain. Scouts may use dead branches and anything item from their Patrol Survival Pack to complete this structure. Fire Building - Using three different methods, build and light three fires. Fire is an important part of wilderness survival. It provides light, heat, cooking energy and can act as a signal for rescue. The scouts will gather the wood and kindling and build a fire. Bonus points will be awarded if patrol survival pack includes 3 different fire building methods. Wilderness First Aid – You have located an injured person in a disaster area. This event will be place scouts in a wilderness first aid scenario. Scouts must determine and treat the injured person with basic first aid knowledge, including the treatment for: shock, broken bones and sprains, insect and bee stings, cuts and wounds, etc. How wide and how high –Patrols; judged on accuracy. On a field, points will be drawn to represent the banks of a river. Using various methods, Scouts will estimate the distance between these points. Patrols, must also determine the height of a pre-determined structure using various methods to estimate the heights.Survival Kit - Each patrol member will have their personal survival kit inspected at opening flags. Points will be earned for complete kits.Water Treatment – Scouts will be instructed in 3 ways to treat water found in the outdoors to prepare it for drinking. They will use their skills while cooking. Bonus points will be awarded if patrol survival pack includes 3 different fire building methods.Signaling – Show five different ways to attract attention when lost; demonstrate how to use a signal mirror; describe five ground-to-air signals and tell what they mean. Bonus points will be awarded if patrol survival pack includes 3 different fire building methods.Knot Relay - All scouts should know the 7 basic scout knots. This relay will give them a chance to test their knowledge and skills against the clock. The following knots need to be tied, in the correct order as follows and as demonstrated in the illustration below: Clove hitch, bowline, two half hitches, square knot, sheep shank, sheet bend, timber hitch, slip knot, fisherman's knot, taut-line hitch. Starting with all the ropes on the ground, tie the knots and use the taut line to lift the log off the ground as illustrated below. Time begins when the first rope is touched and ends when the log is lifted from the ground and no scout is touching the ropes. Points will be awarded on time and number of knots tied correctly.
