A new fire department substation is coming online for the Dutchman Creek Volunteer Fire Department with a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held Sunday June 3 at 3 p.m.

Fairfield County Fire Service holds boot drive fundraiser for Heroes Campaign

Kevin BoozerStaff Writer

These boots are made for more than just walking if you’re a member of the Fairfield County Fire Service.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. volunteers will be posted at various intersections around Fairfield County to hold a boot drive.

Drivers are requested to leave donations in the boots will be overseen by uniformed firefighters.

Monies raised will stay in Fairfield County for disaster response services administered by the Red Cross.

According to former Red Cross Office Manager and Red Cross Volunteer, Eddie Wathford, the Red Cross does not receive federal funding for disaster relief unless the disaster is massive such as Hurricane Katrina.

Rather, the Red Cross

depends on donations. The drive is part of the

Heroes Campaign, that the Red Cross holds each March.

“The fire chief’s association was glad to do a boot drive for us,” Wathford said. The last time Winnsboro had a boot drive was three to four years ago and the one day event raised around $1,500.

Cars who donate at an intersection will receive a six-by-six-inch square card with the American Red Cross logo that drivers can display on their windshields.

In addition to being a source of pride, the cards should keep motorists from being solicited several times for donations after they already have given to the cause.

The money raised will be earmarked for here. Funds assist families who suffer catastrophic losses in house fires, providing

them with motel rooms and client assistance debit cards which can be used to purchase clothing and food.

The group also partners with the Fairfield Electric Cooperative for “Operation Roundup” whereby residents living in a area served by the co-operative can receive donations up to $1,000 as determined on basis of need by a committee.

Wathford also helps people with paperwork for “Operation Roundup.”

He, and another volunteer for disaster services, Dorothy Gather also refer them to the Good Samaritan House if the persons are in need of clothing or food.

“After a fire, to which my unit, Station 16, is dispatched, I take off my fire helmet and put on another helmet to let the victims know the Red Cross is there to help,” Wathford said.

For other dispatches, he must wait for approval from Rock Hill before he can respond.

An eight-year volunteer with the Red Cross and a 31-year volunteer firefighter, this former vocational rehabilitation counselor is thankful for the continued opportunity to serve residents of Fairfield County.

“Our goal is for our organization to be as independent as we can and to serve people in the way that is should be done,” he said.

Thus far the group has exceeded its yearly goal of raising $11,000 by raising $13,000. Every cent raised goes to Red Cross disaster relief.

Wathford hopes this year that community members will rally together to support this worthy cause and fill a boot to help a neighbor in need.

Man hit by train near Bi-LoCindy PittsSenior Reporter

One person is dead after being hit by a train last night.

The man was reportedly lying on the railroad tracks near Bi-Lo at Highway 321 Memorial Day night when he was hit.

Antonio Pineda, of 970 Golf Course Road, Winnsboro, died at the scene, according to Fairfield County Coroner Berkley Ramsey.

Pineda would have turned 33 on June 5.

The conductor was

traveling south just outside the town of Winnsboro when he noticed Pineda lying on the tracks.

The conductor blew the trains whistle and tired to stop but was not able to.

An autopsy is being preformed Wednesday, said Ramsey.

Railroad officials and the coroner’s office are investigating the incident.

Pineda was the father of two children and also leaves behind a wife.

His funeral services will be held on Wednesday.

Local author seeks photos, storiesThere is an urgency of

remembering our history, our roots. In our fast paced world we often forget the past, our roots, and our heritage.

Dr. Virginia Schafer, a new resident of Winnsboro, is looking for original photos and stories for her book, The Local Legends of Fairfield County, South Carolina.

The book publisher is Arcadia Press, one of the leading history book publishers in the U.S.

“I want the book to focus on the unsung heroes of the county, which of course includes areas such as Blythewood, Ridgeway, Blair, Blackstock, and other areas that covers land from the Wateree to Lake Monticello,” said Schafer.

“There are so many stories and legends that have not been told and even though this is mostly

a picture book; a picture can portray a thousand words.

Many folks have the family photos in a shoebox stashed in the closet and soon these boxes and memories may be forgotten. This book is just one way to preserve and share these memories.”

As a doctor and a professional medical writer, putting together a history book was a different genre from her usual health-related publications.

“But it was meant to be.” Schafer said. “I had joined the South Carolina Writers Workshop, the state writing organization, and received an email about a need for ‘Legend’ books about South Carolina.”

After communicating with the editor and publisher, Schafer got the contract and decided

to write about Fairfield County because of one of her old patients, Carroll Pope.

“He had such fantastic and interesting stories about the area where he grew up.

The unique story about this historic place was so intriguing.

I wanted to learn more and finally picked Fairfield County as my subject matter.”

This spawned an introduction to Pelham Lyles of the Fairfield County Museum who provided many resources and introductions.

“I fell in love with the county, the people and their proud heritage.

I was so excited that we even bought a historic home in downtown Winnsboro.” Schafer added.

“I look forward to getting this book together

and learning more about the people in Fairfield County, their stories and history.

I also look forward to getting involved in the community activities and organizations such as the Fairfield County Museum. “The Smithsonian Exhibit, New Harmonies, Celebrating Americana Music, is just one example of how we can share our knowledge and stories about our ‘root’ heritage,” she said.

This exhibit is in its final weeks at the Fairfield County Museum in Winnsboro and more information can be obtained by calling 635-9811.

Original Photos can also be scanned and returned directly to the individual at the museum Tuesday through Saturday or by calling Virginia Schafer at 1-800-381-2306.

Remember when? Connecting names and stories to photographs such as this one is the passion of Dr. Viriginia Schafer.

Pelham Lyles moves with the music at the Smithsonian audio listening station.

Pelham Lyles wrote the grant to secure funding for this exhibit and credits the U.S. Congress for funding the Smithsonian and promoting the arts, something she feels passionately about.

She points out that Winnsboro music, including Pete Seeger’s “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” and antique instruments add a local flare to the exhibit.

Included in the exhibit are famed artist Carew Rice’s banjo and a flute from the Civil War era.

Fans of early acoustic music such as Bob Dylan, or country musicians such as Chet Atkins and Patsy Cline, should enjoy this tribute to “roots music”

which includes old radio recordings.

“This is a regular traveling exhibit from the museum as part of the ‘Museums on Main Street’ program,” Lyles said.

The Fairfield County Museum accepts donations but does not charge for admission.

This exhibit allows patrons the opportunity to experience the connection between life and art as they partake in music, the universal language.

The museum is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

someday should the boy choose to do so..

An avid golfer and fisherman, Moore has fished in the Governor’s Cup Fishing Series and enjoys taking his son frog gigging. Though he no longer pursues the hobby, he was active as a leader and director in the community theatre in Summerville.

He describes himself as a down-to-earth, accessible country lawyer. Moore is relying upon his roots to help his practice grow.

The local relationships and a genuine desire to help people are what he enjoys most about life in a small town law office. One way he reconnected with the community was when he purchased his office space.

Brian Ogburn recognized him by sight immediately, though Mike last saw him as a 10-year-old in Ogburn’s First Bapitst Church Sunday School class.

Opinion Friday, June 1, 2012

The Herald Independent

We’ve been Zucked

Well, they say Friday May 18th was a historic day.

A hoodie, literally and figuratively, offering up the largest IPO in years. That morning Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and majority shareholder, rang the Nasdaq opening bell.

Issuing in a start of a truly “new world” or ending the same. Time will tell. It’s been on every battery device, camera and lip in the civilized world.

There has been a source of much pride for Americans.

Rightly so, in some sense, but is it all it’s cracked up to be? As far as I can tell it is so much air. What do we have here? Seriously, what?

A company worth about $100 Billion and Zuckie has $20 billion. A few other people somewhat less. How does that do anything for anyone else?

Depending on which site one reads, Facebook has from 1,600 to 2,000 employees. There is some talk of additional hires in Menlo Park, CA. Still, all that value and there is no real “person on the street” benefit.

For a little perspective. It was reported March 8 by the Securities and Exchange Commission that Chrysler’s value was $7.5 billion.

At the end of 2009 there were 59,000 Chrysler employees. Less than one tenth of the size, producing 30 times more jobs.

A few days ago it was on the news that Facebook was larger, value wise, than GM and Ford combined.

Ford employs 164,000 and GM employs 202,000 people. That’s 366,000 folks earning a salary from two companies that actually make something.

Lee Iacocca, the erstwhile CEO of Chrysler, is reported to have said, paraphrasing somewhat, “We all can’t go around just servicing each other. At some point we have to make something.” Channeling a little “Hulk,” right on brother!

A personal aside. Some years ago when I lived in Charlotte, Mr. Iacocco was in transition after leaving Chrysler. He bought into a Chrysler dealership there. I was in the dealership on business, working for NationsBank, turned a corner and there was Lee sitting at a desk.

Dressed in his usual dapper way with suit jacket on. We spoke. He was gracious as his reputation.

Look at the jobs just from these automobile companies and merge it into our world. It is the glue for a day-to-day society. Take the product and what jobs it provides. Dealerships, gas stations and “rims.” (Sorry, I could not help myself.)

The world wants to talk about Facebook? It reminds me of old Gene Autry movies. There are Native Americans sending smoke signals. They might be saying, “I am at a stoplight.” Or, “here’s my hourly stupid “funny saying” poster until I can get home.” Give me a break.

Wells Fargo, the new Wachovia, has a book value of $134.75 billion. They are the fourth largest bank in the US, and, have 270,000 employees.

While the exact number of South Carolinians working for them is not listed, just going by the number of branches and the normal positions in each, WF has at least 1,000 SC folks getting a salary. So, Wells Fargo in S.C. has half as many people getting salaries as all of world-wide Facebook.

And, in Fairfield we have 244 folks working for us. Thats about 15 percent as many as the $100 billion company has. This “fad” will have a “shelf life.”

Out of the mouth of late-night jocks, “This week investors will be able to buy shares of Facebook stock for the first time ever. It’s great - now you can lose all your money in the same place you lost all your time.” - Jimmy Fallon

“Facebook has revealed their estimated net worth - $100 billion. That’s almost as much money as businesses lose every year from their employees wasting time looking at Facebook.” - Jay Leno

Actually, Facebook is nothing but air. At least with smoke you can see what’s ahead.

We’ve been Zucked!

From the FBI to Fairfield CountyAlways having had an

infatuation with everything related to forensic science, court cases, crimes and law enforcement, I watch all the television shows that pertain to it in any way.

My husband does not share my interest in such shows, he prefers American Pickers, Pawn Shop and the History Channel which is why we have more than one television in the house.

I enjoy all three CSI shows, both NCIS, Southland, Criminal Minds, Law and Order and Blue Bloods to name just a few.

Patricia Cornwell is my favorite author and as I read each of her books, I place myself in the laboratory of Kay Sparketta, her forensic expert.

Because of this interest, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that one of the members to join our church this past year (Lake Wateree Presbyterian, U.S.A.) is a retired agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

What interesting stories I knew he would have.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation originated from a force of special agents created in 1908 by then Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.

Bonaparte was responsible for creating a corps of special agents from the Department of Justice. These former detectives and secret service men were the forerunners of the FBI.

The establishment of this kind of agency at a national level was very controversial because for many years it was thought that it was up to the states to fulfill government responsibilities.

The Department of Justice under Bonaparte had no investigators except a few special agents and examiners. Since its beginning in 1870, this department used its funds to investigate federal crimes by hiring detectives and investigators from other federal agencies, later calling on secret service operatives.

This proved to be very expensive and so in May of 1908 a law was passed preventing the Department of Justice from engaging secret service personnel.

Ten former secret service investigators became special agents and on March 16, 1909, George Wickersham, Bonaparte’s successor, named the organization Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In the next few years the agents grew in number to more than 300. In those years there were fewer federal crimes and so the FBI was investigating national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust and land fraud.

Later, they investigated such crimes as transporting women over state lines for immoral purposes and with the entry of the United States into world war II came espionage and acts of sabotage. By 1921 the lawless years brought about the gangster activities and prohibition.

J. Edgar Hoover at the age of 26 became the assistant director of the FBI and three years later was named its director.

At that time the bureau had grown to 650 employees of which 441 were special agents. Hoover headed the agency from 1924 until his death in 1972 at the age of 77 years.

I was quite sure Brown had lived an exciting life and had many experiences that he could share and that is why I chose him as a person-of-interest.

His full name is Thomas H. Brown. He was born in Miami, Florida as the middle child of three boys.

His father Gordon was with Eastern Airlines so the family moved around considerably.

His mother Tommi Grace was a homemaker. His siblings include Gordon who lives in Long Beach, Calif. and Robert living in Winston Salem, N.C.

Brown attended R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston Salem, graduated from the University of North Carolina and attended law school at Lake Forest where he earned a B.A. in political science and economics.

He received his law degree in 1969.

When a FBI agent came to talk to his class during his last year at law school, Brown found the prospect very interesting and decided to become an agent rather than a lawyer for JAG.

His 16 week training took place at Quantico and he became a FBI agent.

Brown met Phyllis Dunham while in high school and they married in June of 1968. Phyllis oversaw all programs for handicapped children at the Winston Salem recreation department.

She taught physical education for 17 years before becoming an instructional technology specialist until her retirement in 2004. She continues part-time work as an ITS at Spears Creek Road Child Development.

The couple was blessed with two daughters, Meredith Leigh and Nancy Grace. Their grandchildren include William, Hunter and Thomas Halliday and Adam and Allison Orman. The Browns are members of the Lake Wateree Presbyterian Church.

The family lived in San Diego, California, San Antonio and Fort Hood, Texas between the years 1969 to 1975.

Brown joined the bureau in 1969 where he stayed until his retirement in 1993. He then joined the Stone Container Paper Company as manager of corporate security until 1999.

He became a SLED agent for the Attorney General’s office from 1999 to 2005 and then worked part-time on cases until 2007.

He worked on criminal cases for the better part

of his career, mostly bank robberies, kidnappings and public corruption. Brown was also a legal instructor for the bureau, a hostage negotiator and a principal firearms instructor.

I asked Brown if any cases held a particular interest for him and he mentioned the Larry Gene Bell case of 1985.

Many of you will remember this one since it took place in the Columbia area. Larry Bell was a double murderer in Lexington County. He kidnapped a 17 year old and a 10 year old and killed both girls.

It was the largest manhunt in South Carolina. Bell made eight phone calls to the girl’s family, taunting them and giving directions to the whereabouts of the bodies.

It was an indentation of a telephone number on a scratch pad and the help of the telephone company that led to the capture and arrest of Bell. He was tried and executed.

Another notable case special to Agent Brown was the Lost Trust case from 1989 to 1991, when more than 20 legislators were put in jail for bribery.

These state legislators were investigated by the FBI and indicted by a federal grand jury. It was the worst case of State House corruption at that time.

Now, in 2012 the FBI has grown to more than 8,000 agents.

Tom and Phyllis lived in Blythewood from 1995 to 2010 and at that time they rebuilt a home on the Lake Wateree property they had since 1984 and moved full time to the lake.

This is a very interesting man and I truly enjoyed our interview.

Jehu anointed kingAnd Elisha the prophet

called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramothgilead: And when thou comest thither, look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber; Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus saith the LORD, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not. So the young man, even the young man the prophet, went to Ramothgilead. And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain. And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel. And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel. For

the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel: And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah: And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.

Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication. And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Jehu is king.

Greasy spill being cleaned from roadwayCindy PittsSenior Reporter

Officials are still working to determine how a smelly spill landed on a county road.

On Wednesday night, around 30 gallons of a sludge called “OFFAL” were found on Parr Road near Monticello.

The spill was in a stream that went down the road.

The smelly substance is restaurant grease and food particles that are used to make food for dogs and other animals.

Cleanup crews began their

work Wednesday night by placing sand over the substance and Parr Road was closed early Thursday for the mop up efforts. The mess was pushed to the side of the road.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is working to find out what caused the spill, but spokesman Adam Myrick says it is not an environmental or public health threat.

Myrick said the biggest problem is the substance may smell like the back of a trash truck. GET NOTICED ....
