Staff Activities

Dr. Muhammed Şahin from the Depar tment of Civil Engineering made the opening speech at the 1st National Congress on Understanding the Violence, which was organized and hosted by MEF University on November 12, 2015.

Dr. Mehmet Fevzi Ünal from the Depar tment of Mechanical Engineering participated the Patent Fair organized by the University-Industry Cooperation Centers Platform (USIMP) from November 11-12, 2015 at the Istanbul Military Museum. The fair provided a platform for bilateral meetings and for presentation of the activities of inventors and participating technology transfer offices.

Dr. Mehmet Fevzi Ünal also par ticipated the meeting organized by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) on November 13, 2015 at Raffles Hotel Istanbul. The meeting was about preparations towards the Turkey Innovation Week that will be held on December 3-5, 2015 at the International Congress Center, İstanbul.

Dr. Erhan Erkut from the Depar tment of Industr ial Engineer ing gave the following speeches/presentations,

on Corporate Entrepreneurship at the meeting of Interbank Card Center (BKM) in İstanbul on November 19, 2015.

on “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow of Education” at the meeting of Tofaş Akademi in Bursa on November 20, 2015.

as a President of Academic Committee at the Board of Trustees meeting of İstanbul (Erkek) Lisesi on November 22, 2015.

Dr. Erhan Erkut attended the Workshop on Entrepreneurship Education organized by Endeavor Turkey at AvantGarde Hotel, İstanbul, on November 28, 2015.

Dr. Erhan Erkut also delivered a lecture at the 21st Century Proficiency and Career Planning Certificate Program at Hasan Kalyoncu Üniversitesi, İstanbul, on November 15, 2015.

Cooperations

Dr. Rahmat Shoureshi, Provost and Vice President of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), visited our university on November 17, 2015. A 3+2 Program Agreement between MEF University and NYIT has been signed by Dr. Muhammed Şahin and Dr. Shoureshi, after a meeting with participation of Dr. Mehmet Fevzi Ünal from the Depar tment of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Erhan Erkut from the Department of Industrial Engineering, Dr. Derin Ural from the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Muhittin Gökmen from the Department of Computer Engineering, and Ms. Anjariitta Rantanen, the Director of International Office.

Conferences & Workshops

Dr Gökçe Tönük from the Depar tment of Civil Engineer ing

participated the 6th International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering which was held in Christchurch, New Zealand on November 1-4, 2015. Dr. Tönük was one of the co-authors of the invited paper entitled “A Probabilistic Procedure for Site Specific Design Earthquake” presented by Dr. Atilla Ansal.

Dr. Gökçe Tönük also par ticipated the SciNetNatHazPrev (A Scientific Network for Earthquake, Landslide and Flood Hazard Prevention) Project Open Seminar and Final Workshop for Stakeholders which were held in İstanbul on October 23 and November 12-13, 2015, respectively. Dr. Tönük takes part as a research associate in landslides in the SciNetNatHazPrev Project which is co-financed by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) under Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Programme. She presented the landslide hazard assessment studies conducted for the pilot areas in Turkey at the seminar.

Dr Utku Koç from the Depar tment of Industr ial Engineer ing participated INFORMS Annual Meeting on November 1-4, 2015 at Philadelphia, USA. He gave a presentation entitled "Generation of Feasible Integer Solutions on a Massively Parallel Computer” as an invited speaker.

Publications

The paper entitled “Acoustic Particle Palpation for Measuring Tissue Elasticity” of Dr. Hasan Körük from the Depar tment of Mechanical Engineering was published in Applied Physics Letters on November 30, 2015.

Visits

Dr. Gilbert Laporte, the Chairholder of the Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, visited the Department of Industrial Engineering on November 17, 2015. Dr. Laporte obtained information on the Flipped Learning implementations at MEF University and engaged in constructive discussions on the research topics of faculty members of the Department of Industrial Engineering..

Mr. Özcan Kahramangil, Vice President of ASELSAN in charge of Strategy & Business Development, and Mr. Koray Güre, Manager of Strategic Planning & Corporate Performance Division at ASELSAN, visited our university and had a meeting with Dr. Mehmet Fevzi Ünal and Dr. Canfuat Delale from the Depar tment of Mechanical Engineer ing, and Dr. Muhittin Gökmen from the Depar tment of Computer Engineering, Dr. Mustafa Kibaroğlu and Dr. Ayşegül Kibaroğlu from the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Dr. Ezgi Akpınar from the Department of Business Administration, and Dr. Hande Karadağ from Lifelong Learning Center of MEF University for potential co-operations between ASELSAN and MEF Strategy (Center for International Security Studies and Strategic Research) which is directed by Dr. Mustafa Kibaraoğlu.

Visits

Vice Rectors Dr. Bülent Çakmak and Dr. Bayram Şahin, Dr. İrfan Kaymaz, the Dean of Faculty of Engineer ing, Dr. Murat Demir Aydın, the Head of Mechanical Engineer ing Department, and Dr. İlker Kazaz, the Head of Civil Engineering Department of Erzurum Technical University visited our university and had a meeting on experiences gained from the implementation of the Flipped Classroom method at MEF University for the past two years, with the participation of Dr. Mehmet Fevzi Ünal and Dr. Canfuat Delale from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Ebru Arısoy Saraçlar from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Dr. Hande Küçükaydın from the Department of Industrial Engineering, on November 26, 2015.

The Civil Engineering Student Group and the faculty members of the Department of Civil Engineering of MEF University organized a technical trip to the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge (Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge) on November 12, 2015. Mr. Cevat Alim, Suspended Bridge Chef of State Highway Region 1 (KGM1), delivered a lecture about the details of the design and construction of the bridge. The students also had the chance to meet with State Highway Deputy Director Dr. Nurdan Apaydın, P.E.

The CE Student Group of MEF University hosted Dr. Ahmet Çıtıpıtıoğlu, P.E. Integrated Solutions and Design Coordinator at TAV Construction, on November 24, 2015. Dr. Çıtıpıtıoğlu gave a presentation on the use of construction management and building information (BIM) systems in airport design & construction projects.

Faculty Introductions

Dr. Muhammed Şahin from the Depar tment of Civil Engineering introduced MEF University at İzmir Education Fair on November 20, 2015.

Dr. Berk Gökberk introduced the Depar tment of Computer Engineering to the students of Saint Benoit Lisesi on November 26, 2015.

Dr. Hande Küçükaydın introduced the Depar tment of

Industrial Engineering to the students of Doğa Koleji, İstanbul on

November 19, 2015 and of Saint Benoit Lisesi, İstanbul on November 26, 2015.

Faculty Seminars

Dr. Azmi Telefoncu, a former professor of Ege University and a renowned biochemistry researcher with more than 85 SCI papers, 25 books and 1096 citations, visited our university on November 20, 2015 and gave a seminar reflecting his experiences in national project and scientific activity supports offered by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). Dr. Telefoncu also gave information on TÜBİTAK and EU supported large scale projects carried out at his R&D company at Ege University Technopark.

Faculty Seminars

Additionally, the following seminars were held in November 2015:

"Vehicle Routing with Soft Time Windows and Stochastic Travel Times: A Column Generation and Branch-and-Price Solution Approach" by Dr. Duygu Taş from the Department of Industrial Engineering on November 11, 2015.

"Geotechnical Parameters, the Critical Path to Rebuilding the New Orleans Protection System" by Mr. Byron Porter, P.E., M. ASCE, on November 16, 2015. Mr. Porter worked as the Director of FFEB J.V., L.L.C. Geotechnical Laboratory of Fugro Consultants, Inc. and managed the geotechnical laboratory work for rebuilding the hurricane protection system in New Orleans.

"Response of Structures to Earthquakes" by Dr. Eleni Smyrou from the Department of Civil Engineering of Istanbul Technical University, on November 25, 2015. Dr. Eleni Smyrou received her Diploma in Civil Engineering from National Technical University of Athens, Greece and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Earthquake Engineering from the ROSE School, University of Pavia, Italy. She is currently working as an assistant professor of Structural Engineering at Istanbul Technical University.
