TheForensicandCrimeSceneToolSet(FACTS)isasimplestraightforwardguidetoassistofficerswith

properCrimeSceneManagement,Documentation,andEvidenceCollection.

TheproceduresandstepsidentifiedinFACTShavebeenreviewedandvettedthroughtheNational

ForensicSciencesTechnologyCenter. Theyarenotintendedtobeallinclusivebuttoserveasa

foundationforeachagencytobuildaquickreferenceguideforofficers. TheAuthoringSystemallows

eachagencytomodifypolicies,proceduresandstepstomeettheagencysindividualneeds.

TofunctiononanXPcomputer,FACTSrequirestheMicrosoft.NetFramework2.0orlaterandMicrosoft

SQLServer2005Expresstofunction. BothoftheseareincludedintheXPinstallationpackage. The

installerwillcheckyourcomputerfortheexistenceofthesetwoapplicationsandiftheyarenot

installed,itwillinstallthem. Iftheyarealreadyinstalled,theinstallerwillskipautomaticallytoinstalling

theFACTSapplication.

DownloadInstructions

TodownloadtheFACTSclickoneitherthefilenameorthegreendownloadbutton. Itisrecommended

thatyousavethefiletoyourDesktopasitiseasiertolocatethefileonceyouarereadytoinstallit.

Note:IfyouhavedownloadedboththeFACTSSetup.zipandtheFACTSAdminSetup,youneedtoinstall

theFACTSapplicationfirst.

Thefirststepistouncompressthefilesyouhavedownloaded. FindthefileFACTSSetup.ziponyour

Desktopandrightclickonit.

Thiswillopendialogueboxsimilartotheonebelow. Selectwhereyouwanttheextractedfilestobe

placed. AgainwerecommendextractingthemtoyourDesktop. ClickExtract.

Ifascreenshowingtheextractedfilesdoesnotopenautomatically,locatetheuncompressedfileson

yourDesktopanddoubleclickonittoopenthem.Locatethesetup.exefileanddoubleclickittobegin

installation.

Installing.NetFrameworkandSQLServer2005ExpressforWindowsXP

OncomputersrunningWindowsXP,theLicenseAgreementscreenforMicrosoft.NetFramework2.0

willopen. ClickAccept.ThenextboxtoopenwillbetheLicenseAgreementboxforMicrosoftSQL

Server2005

Express.

Click

Accept.

fairly

speed

your

computer

IfyouaregoingtoinstalltheFACTSAuthoringSystem,closeFACTSatthispoint. Youcanaccomplish

thisbyclickingonExitortheredX. YoumustcloseFACTSpriortoinstallingtheAuthoringSystem.

InstallingtheFACTSAuthoringSystem

ToinstalltheAuthoringSystem,first,iftheFACTSapplicationisrunning,closeit. IfFACTSisrunning

whenyou

attempt

to

install

the

Authoring

System,

you

will

not

be

able

to

successfully

link

to

the

FACTS.mdfdatabase.

TheinstallationofFACTSAuthoringSystemismuchthesameasinstallationoftheFACTSapplication

itself.BrowsetothelocationwhereyousavedtheFACTSAdminSetup.zipfile. Extractthefilesandclick

ontheSetup.exefile.

Since.NetandSQLServerhavealreadybeeninstalled,theFACTSAdminSetupinstallershouldproceed

directlytotheFACTSAdminSetupWizard.

StepthroughtheinstallationjustliketheprocessforFACTSincludinglinkingtothedatabase.

Atthispoint,bothFACTSandtheFACTSAuthoringSystemshouldbereadyforuse. AsthisisaBeta

release,wedonotwarrantitascompletelyfreeofbugs. Ifyouexperienceanybugs,functionality
