Factors that influence the choice of language learning strategy
• Language being learnedPeople tend to adapt their learning strategies depending on the language they are learning. There is a high likelihood that other variables come into play when talking about language learning.
• DurationIt includes the course level and number of years of the study of the language. As a person increase their level, their language learning strategies may also improve because they could take out those strategies that prove to be of less use for them.
• Degree of awareness about the self
People who know more about themselves tend to know which learning strategy works better for them.
• AgeIt may also mean the course level. There had been studies who observed that adults seem to have a more sophisticated language learning strategy than children.
• SexMen and women both show “distinct strategy strengths” which means that men and women have different strengths when it comes to learning strategies.
• Affective variablesAttitudes, motivational level/intensity, language learning goals reflecting motivational orientation, specific personality traits, and general personality type.
• Learning styleSome people would be better at learning using a certain style therefore the strategies they use would follow that style.
• AptitudeSome studies suggest that intelligence (general aptitude) may have a relationship with self-reported language learning strategies and language achievement.
• Career orientationSome studies suggested that people’s field of specialization has influence on which language learning strategies they use.
