"GATGFI MY FALL" Garbo speaks! Jolson sings! Billy Idol smiles! Events all. For possibly the first time since Don Rickles offered to turn Idol upside-down and rent him out as a dust ,mop, the snarlin' Aryan has bared his teeth in something other than his trademark sneer. The trick, according to the vidclip's producer, Jacqui Byford, is simply that Idol and "Catch My Fall" director David Mallet are "extremely good friends." That fact didn't produce any grins in "White Wedding", but hey, what- ever makes Billy happy. Tliis slight softening of Idol's im- age occurs in a typically abstract, 35mm-film clip that finds our hero dazed in a room at the gateway to Hell. Demons contort his face. Brim- stone winds engulf him. He gets an overpowering urge to take a shower. Scary. Scary stuff. Mallet, an "old-timer" whose countless videos include the classic "Ashes to Ashes" (with co-director David Bowie), is as stylish as ever here, his excesses almost forgiveable. The room glows with a hazy patina, haunted by vaguely familiar layers of cinema past. Carolyn Cowan's make- up work infuses an eerie charm. And come time for a bit of action, an ill wind sweeps dramatically. "We used a giant, giant wind machine," relates producer Byford. "It was a bit more powerful than we expected; we thought it'd blow us all down, and the studio"-Unit 5, in London-"wds a complete mess afterward."
