A Message from the Facades+ Partners

Welcome to the inaugural Facades+ LA conference, symposium, and workshops! The first Facades+ event was hosted in New York City in early 2012, and inspired an ongoing series that has traversed the nation three times. Each event has grown equally in anticipation, excitement, and participation. Last year we touched down in New York City, Chicago, and Dallas. We are most excited to kick off our 4th year amidst the booming downtown of Los Angeles. Introducing a novel event at a new venue to a fresh city is both a great challenge and pleasure. We are confident that you will find Facades+ an engaging experience, and that together we will create the same intensity of thought, experience, and dialogue that has inspired our past gatherings.

There is a lot to talk about, from new materials that are finding applica-tion in the building skin to emergent design strategies that address vary-ing aspects of building performance and appearance. More than a few high-profile facades were unveiled in 2014, with many more in the works for completion this year. Some of these recently completed projects have been spectacular successes, some of them far less so. What makes the difference? Project delivery strategy appears to be linked as a strong con-tributing factor, but in what way? The Thursday symposium will include a series of lectures and panel discussions on topics derived from these and related considerations. Friday is comprised of workshop programs tailored to allow a deeper and more hands-on exploration of the topics with smaller groups.

Once again, our volunteer conference chairs, chosen from among your peers, have curated a brilliant speaker program of notable practitioners from various sectors of the AEC industry. We also direct your attention to the select industry-leading sponsors that have stepped up to make Facades+ the success it has become. They have a high profile at the conference venue, and we encourage all of you to spend some time with them and see what they are up to; they have been included as sponsors because they are playing a leading role in the step-change currently un-derway in building facade technology.

Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this LA conference, we are plan-ning our upcoming events for 2015. Programming is already underway for New York City, consistently our biggest conference, this year scheduled for April 16-17. Facades+NYC will focus on the dynamic building activity currently underway in the city, the hottest construction market in the U.S. Curbed NY recently cited 42 notable building projects in the works or recently completed, with many landmarks already among them, that are transforming the urban environment of this vibrant city. What is driving this activity? How are these novel projects being realized? What chang-es are taking place with facade technology to accommodate this urban transformation? These and many more questions will be addressed in a dialogue that is likely to redefine perceptions of the role of the facade in a beautiful and sustainable built environment. We will be announcing our other 2015 conference locations soon, so keep an eye out and plan your schedules accordingly.

JAMES CARPENTER | JAMES CARPENTER DESIGN ASSOCIATESJames Carpenter is president and founder of James Carpenter Design Associates. His study of architecture and art led to the founding of his studio, which for over thirty five years has been working with institutional and private clients to create a synthesis of experiential light in architecture and the built environment. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, the

American Institute of Architects Honor Award and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

LAWRENCE SCARPA | BROOKS + SCARPA Lawrence Scarpa has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways. His firm Brooks + Scarpa is the recipient of the 2014 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Award in Architecture and the 2010 AIA National Firm Award. Lawrence has taught for more than two decades and is currently on the faculty at the University of Southern California.

ANITHA BURRA | A. ZAHNERAnitha Burra is a Senior Manager, Engineering for A. Zahner Company; a renowned designer, fabricator and installer of some of the most inventive and intricate meal facades. Her background in product design and development facilitates collaboration with architects and designers in bringing complex, custom designs to fruition.

DIANA DARLING | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPERDiana is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper, celebrating its 11th year. The A|N media company consists of four print publications covering architecture and design news. As A|N’s publisher, Diana won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. Diana began her publishing career as Director of print production for The Gap’s European markets.

ADRIAN SCOTT FINE | LOS ANGELES CONSERVANCYAdrian Scott Fine oversees the Conservancy’s outreach, advocacy and response on key preservation issues within the greater Los Angeles area. The Conservancy is the nation’s largest local preservation nonprofit organization. Previously, from 2000-2010, Adrian was with the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

RUSSELL FORTMEYER | ARUPRussell Fortmeyer leads sustainable design for the Los Angeles office of the global engineering firm, Arup, where he focuses on high-performance buildings, low-carbon urban planning, and strategic consulting. He teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, and publishes widely, including his recent book, Kinetic Architecture: Designs for Active Envelopes.

ANDREAS FROECH | MACHINEOUS CONSULTANTSAndreas Froech is the founder of Machineous Consultants which specializes in developing solutions to complex architectural fabrication projects and furthering the use of robotic technology in construction. He has successfully adapted industrial NACHI robotic arms to be used for many CNC-type operations, specifically for customized projects outside of their traditional assembly-line use.

EMILIE HAGEN | ATELIER TENEmilie Hagen, Associate Director of Atelier Ten’s San Francisco office, is an expert in daylighting, resiliency, net zero water and energy, and carbon management. She has contributed to projects ranging from one of the largest and most complex net zero energy buildings in the U.S. to the first LEED Gold certified commercial gallery.

KERENZA HARRIS | MORPHOSISKerenza Harris currently works on the design and system integration of complex facade systems for Morphosis Architects. Her primary focus is to develop automation systems and parametric tools that can be fully integrated into the workflow, from the early design phase all the way to construction administration.

STEPHANE HOFFMAN | MORRISON HERSHFIELDAt Morrison Hershfield, Stéphane focuses on design of envelope systems. With a background in structural engineering, building science and architecture, Stéphane brings a well-balanced approach to envelope design; blending scientific analysis with an understanding of aesthetics considerations. He provides innovative concepts that provide value by improving durability and energy efficiency.

DONALD HORN | GSADon Horn advances building performance through research, standards development and implementation of green practices as Deputy Director of the U.S. General Services Administration’s Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings. He serves on numerous task forces and committees including ASHRAE Standard 189.1 and Seattle’s Deep Green and Living Building.

STACEY HOOPER | NBBJ | LA CO-CHAIRStacey Hooper, AIA, is a senior associate at NBBJ, named one of the world’s most innovative architecture firms by Fast Company. With more than 20 years of experience designing corporate, healthcare, science, education and research environments, Stacey’s work facilitates comfort, sustainability and human interaction. As one of the regions premier facade architects, she is regular lecturer on the subject at the University of

Southern California. Her clients include WeChat, Loma Linda University Medical Center and the University of Southern California.

ALVIN HUANG | SYNTHESIS DESIGN + ARCHITECTUREAlvin Huang, AIA is the Founder of Synthesis Design + Architecture and an Assistant Professor at the USC School of Architecture. He is a multi award‐winning architect, designer, and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance, emergent design technologies and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice.

KEVIN KAVANAGH | CO ARCHITECTSUpon graduating from The Cooper Union, Kevin has specialized in the design and construction of building envelopes. His professional experience includes numerous project types, including healthcare, residential, commercial, and institutional. As a facade consultant, Kevin has worked on a variety of envelopes, including new construction, landmark restoration, reclad/overclad, and various specialty structures. He is currently

involved in a variety of projects at CO Architects, where he is a leader of their facade design team.

ALEX KORTER | CO ARCHITECTSSince graduating from the Glasgow School of Art, Alex’s architectural experience encompasses the design and technical coordination of commercial, healthcare, civic, and academic projects varying in size and complexity across Europe and the US. He holds special interest in developing innovative exterior envelope systems and making environmental, economic, social, and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of projects. Alex

is currently involved in a student services building and a hospital project at CO.

JULIA KÖRNER | UCLAJulia Körner works at the convergence of architecture, industrial design and fashion design, realized by innovative and intelligent use of additive manufacturing and robotics. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna and a Master of Science in emergent technologies and design from the Architectural Association, London. Julia worked with international offices in New York and London. Since 2012

she is lecturer at UCLA’s SUPRASTUDIO, led by Greg Lynn.

BILL KREYSLER | KREYSLER & ASSOCIATESWilliam Kreysler is founder and CEO of Kreysler & Associates (K&A), a custom molder of fiber reinforced products located in Napa County. K&A has won awards for excellence in the manufacture of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) architectural products, industrial products, and large-scale sculptures. The firm has customers throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

SAM LUBELL | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPERSam Lubell founded A|N’s West edition in 2007. He was co-curator of the recent A+D Museum exhibition Never Built Los Angeles, and has written five books about architecture: Never Built Los Angeles, Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis Paris 2000+, London 2000+, and Living West. His next project will be the book and exhibition Never Built New York.

LEO MARMOL | MARMOL RADZINERLeo Marmol, FAIA, is Managing Principal of the design-build practice Marmol Radziner, known for its innovative design approach and expertise in architecture, landscape, interior design, and the restoration of historic modern buildings. Since their award-winning restoration of the Kaufmann House, Marmol Radziner has restored additional projects by Richard Neutra, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner, and E. Stewart Williams. Marmol Radziner

is the preservation architect for the Century Plaza Hotel project in Century City.

PAUL MARTIN | A. ZAHNERPaul Martin is the Director of Engineering Sales for the A. Zahner Company; a renowned designer, fabricator, and installer of some of the world’s most inventive and intricate metal facades. Since 1998, Paul has worked closely with many of the world’s top architects and artists to deliver exceptional projects.

ILARIA MAZZOLENI | IM STUDIOIlaria Mazzoleni is an architect, biomimicist, author, founder of IM Studio Milano/Los Angeles, and professor at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. Her professional and academic focus is sustainable architecture and biomimicry. Her book, Architecture Follows Nature: Biomimetic Principles for Innovative Design, explores animal skin systems as they relate to building envelopes.

MARGARET MONTGOMERY | NBBJAs NBBJ’s global sustainable practice leader, Margaret has devoted her career to creating healthy places that reunite people with nature. She leads work that has far-reaching impact, improving building performance and ecosystem vitality. Within the firm she challenges and inspires teams to work with nature, developing our buildings, infrastructure, neighborhoods and cities to achieve human needs and desires

within a thriving ecosystem.

TIM NASS | SAFTIFIRSTTim has over 20 years of experience in the architectural glazing industry. As the Vice President of National Sales at SAFTI FIRST, he brings his extensive knowledge and expertise when working closely with architects and contract glaziers. Tim also oversees SAFTI FIRST’s national network of architectural sales representatives. Tim Nass has been delivering our AIA-registered presentation for over 3 years to various architecture firms, AIA

GREG OTTO | WALTER P. MOOREGreg Otto is Principal and Managing Director for Walter P Moore’s Los Angeles office with over 19 years of experience. Greg has degrees in both architecture and engineering and is strategically focused on collaboration between the two disciplines, recognizing the innovation that such collaboration brings. Greg brings a wealth of specialist knowledge in the areas of long-span structures, tensioned fabric/membrane structures, and

building facade engineering and design. His portfolio of work ranges from small, art-centric projects to large scale, stadia and airport projects, with the common denominator being the tight integration of design and engineering. He is a creative thinker and has a strong commitment to design excellence.

MIC PATTERSON | ENCLOS | CONFERENCE DIRECTORMic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology, structural glass facades, and sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced facade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures.

MATT PETERSEN | CITY OF LOS ANGELESBefore joining the Mayor’s office, Matt served as President and CEO of Global Green USA for 19 years. Passionate about improving the lives of those in need, combatting climate change and greening communities, Petersen focused the organization on greening affordable housing, schools and cities (including LA). Petersen led the organization in the green rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and later to communities

devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Matt is a board member of Global Green USA and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, as well as is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative.

JILL SHERMAN | GERDING EDLENJill leads Gerding Edlen’s public-private partnerships and build-to-suit projects for non-profit and for-profit companies. She specializes in projects financed using complex financing structures such as low-income housing tax credits and new markets tax credits. Jill is responsible for new business development as well as management of all predevelopment activities. In addition to her commitment to community, she is

also passionate about sustainability and is responsible for five LEED platinum projects. She served on the Portland Planning Commission from 2007-2012 and currently serves on the board of Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and the Architectural Foundation of Oregon.

LUKE SMITH | ENCLOS | LA CO-CHAIRLuke Smith is a Senior Designer at the Advanced Technology Studio of Enclos, where he collaborates with architectural design teams in early project conception, design-assist contracts, and building skin realization. Prior to joining Enclos, Luke worked at Front Inc. and Shop Construction in New York City, and Make Architects in London. He has extensive experience in Direct-To-Fab technology, working with parametric modeling tools to

implement innovative facade fabrication and assembly on large scale projects. Luke studied in Oxford and Paris, before attaining a Masters in Architecture from Princeton.

OLIVER STEPE | YKK AP AMERICA INC.Oliver is Senior Vice President of YKK AP America, the US arm of the global producer of specialized facades systems, YKK AP. Overseeing the company’s domestic business unit operations, he has fostered a culture based on innovation and emerging technologies, advanced product development and exceptional business practice. A graduate of the State University of New York, he is a current member of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce

and has been a member of the Construction Specifications Institute since 1993 where he holds CDT certification. In 2012, Oliver was listed as one of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry by US Glass Magazine.

MICHAEL TURNER | YKK AP AMERICA INC.Michael heads YKK AP America’s technical services and marketing teams. He has held roles including drafting, design engineering, and project management, developing unique software to improve efficiencies. He is a member of the International Code Council and on the Board of Directors for the American Architectural Manufacturers Assoc. Michael chaired the development of several voluntary industry performance standards,

and is involved in codes and regulatory affairs affecting the fenestration industry.

DEVYN WEISER | TESTA WEISERDevyn Weiser is a founding partner and Design Principal at Testa/Weiser whose work is widely recognized for aesthetic, conceptual, and technical innovations that integrate advanced material processes at all scales. She has been SCI-Arc faculty since 2005 where along with Peter Testa initiated the Robot House sponsored by Stäubli Robotics. Weiser holds both a B.F.A. and B.Arch with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design;

and MS.AAD from Columbia University, GSAPP.

JOSEPH WELKER | JAMES CARPENTER DESIGN ASSOCIATESJoseph Welker is James Carpenter Design Associates’ studio Director. His current focus is utilizing light to transform an addition to the Museum of Westward Expansion below the St. Louis Arch and to enliven a new commercial loft building under construction along the High Line in New York City. Mr. Welker has been at JCDA for 12 years.

DAVID BARBER | ARUPDavid is based in Washington DC, where he works as a fire protection engineer, with considerable experience in performance based fire safety design and its application to the built environment. David has been involved with research and design of timber structures for fire for over 20 years, including testing, new timber technologies, authoring fire safety design guides and completing fire safety design for low and

mid-rise timber buildings.

CHARLES CHALOEICHEEP | WSP BUILT ECOLOGYCharles joined the Built Ecology group in San Francisco in 2010 after working for two years for Built Ecology in the Sydney, Australia office. Charles has a strong engineering background and holds a professional engineers license in both civil and mechanical engineering.

ERIK VERBOON | BURO HAPPOLDErik Verboon is a technical designer and facade consultant for international consulting and engineering firm Buro Happold. Since 2007, he has been a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Product Architecture Lab. He is also currently an adjunct faculty of architecture at Pratt Institute, serving as facade consultant to a third-year undergraduate comprehensive design studio.

FELIX WEBER | ARUPFelix Weber works at Arup as glass and complex facade specialist since 2007. He has lead and contributed to many projects involving structural glass, steel, timber, FRP, fabrics and other materials and has worked on the development and testing of new products for the building industry. Since early 2014 Felix heads the Arup facade group in San Francisco.

TIM DUMATRAIT | CASE INC.As a Building Information Specialist at CASE, Tim Dumatrait provides BIM and project support for AEC clients. Prior to joining CASE, Tim worked as a designer and project manager with Eskew + Dumez + Ripple in New Orleans. He worked to enhance the use of software tools for daylight analysis, energy modeling, construction cost analysis, LEED documentation, and fabrication. He earned both his Bachelor’s of Science and Master of

Architecture degrees from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he taught Revit and Rhino workshops after graduating.

MATT NAUGLE | THORNTON TOMASETTI CORE STUDIOMatthew is member of the Advanced Computational Modeling group at Thornton Tomasetti, with an emphasis on establishing digital workflows catered to the multifaceted modeling processes within the company. He is responsible for teaching and developing methods that utilize parametricmodeling, interoperability, integrated analysis, BIM management, and geometry rationalization. Matthew

has taught and lectured on the topics of parametric design, digital fabrication, and building systems at Philadelphia University, Stevens Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania.

MOSTAPHA ROUDSARI | THORNTON TOMASETTI CORE STUDIOMostapha Roudsari is a designer and software developer focusing on building environmental design. He is currently an Integration Applications Developer at Thornton Tomasetti’s CORE studio. Over the last few years he has been dedicated to the integration of parametric environmental analysis and architectural design. Mostapha is the creator of Ladybug and Honeybee, open-source environmental plugins for Grasshopper3d. His work is widely

published and he lectures frequently throughout the AEC community. He is a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania.

DANIEL SEGRAVES | THORNTON TOMASETTI CORE STUDIODaniel Segraves is a CORE studio Senior Computational Designer and works closely on tool development and research projects. He is a specialist in advanced modeling and computational design strategies, with expertise spanning a wide spectrum from architectural systems optimization to urban energy modeling. His

work is widely published and he lectures frequently throughout the AEC community. Before coming to Thornton Tomasetti he worked as a computational design specialist for OMA, SOM, AS+GG, Gensler, and others. He holds a BArch from the RISD, and an MArch from the Architectural Association of London.
