FINAL EXAM REVIEW
English 122011-2012 School Year
Hopefully, this is your grade!
…and not this!
Q. 1GRAMMAR – Comma Rules
Anytime you write a list of items, phrases, directions, or just about anything, you should separate each item, phrase, direction, etc. with a comma. But, there's the controversial final comma sometimes included or omitted before the conjunction (and, or, but) of a sentence, depending on the situation and style.
Ex. Patty ate a sandwich, a bag of chips, and an orange for lunch.
Q. 2
GRAMMAR: Semicolon Series
Use a semicolon between items in a list or series if any of the items contain commas.
Ex. 1 -- There are basically two ways to write: with a pen or pencil, which is inexpensive and easily accessible; or by computer and printer, which is more expensive but quick and neat.
Ex. 2 -- When you think about how an orchestra is organized, notice the strings, the violin, the viola, and the cello; the woodwinds, the clarinet and the oboe; and the horns, the trombone, the French horn, and the trumpet.
Q. 3GRAMMAR: Using Semicolons to Join
Independent Clauses
Link two independent clauses to connect closely related ideas
Ex. 1 - Some people write with a word processor; others write with a pen or pencil.
Ex. 2 - But however they choose to write, people are allowed to make their own decisions; as a result, many people swear by their writing methods.
