Founded in 2001, the Tamil Literary Garden is a Toronto based charitableorganization committed to promoting the development of literature andstudies in Tamil internationally. Its mandate includes awards, creative writing,scholarship to students, translations, book releases, Tamil theatre performances, conferences and workshops. It recognizes that despite therichness and significance of contemporary writing, very little has been doneto promote or to celebrate the authors who have made major contributionsto Tamil. Among its activities, the event that takes centre stage is a LifetimeAchievement Award, given annually to a writer, scholar, critic or editor, whoover a period of time has made very significant contribution to the growth orstudy of Tamil literature. The Lifetime Achievement Award ( also known as IyalVirudhu ) consists of a plaque and a cash prize of C$2500.

The Tamil Literary Garden also has instituted other awards: Awards for Fiction,Non-fiction, Poetry, Information Technology in Tamil, Translation andScholarship to an undergraduate enrolled in a Tamil studies program. It alsoorganizes Tamil Theatre performances (Naddu Koothu) and lecture series inconjunction with the Department of English - University of Toronto.

Alina Toporas hails from Suceava, Romania (a pictur-esque area, major tourist attraction due to the numer-ous monasteries under the UNESCO Heritage and thecountless natural wonders). After obtaining her HighSchool diploma in Suceava at Colegiul National “PetruRares” , she completed her first year education atUniversity of Sheffield, England majoring inInternational Relations and Politics. In her second yearat University at Drexel, Philadelphia, United States she

majored in Political Science.

Her accomplishments so far are:1. Won the Gulen Peace Institute internationalessay competition on the theme of diplomacy.Consequently, she was awarded in Washington, D.C.2. Won honorable mention at an UNESCO con-test on “The Power of Culture to Create a Better Future”.3. Won essay competition on the recognition ofthe Armenian Genocide and was awarded in TimesSquare at the annual commemoration.

The Tamil Literary GardenScholarship was established inorder to encourage and promoteTamil Studies in the diaspora,particularly among the second

generation. The essay topic for this year is 'NewTechnologies: Refashioning a Tamil Identity'. The essaypresented this year by Nedra was well written and wasselected by the panel of judges for the award.

Arundathy was born in Sri Lanka and came to Canadaduring the civil conflict. She is currently completing herPhD in the Humanities program at York University. HerSSHRC-funded (Social Sciences and HumanitiesResearch Council) dissertation research is on articulations of Tamil refugee identity in Canada. She isa Spoken Word artist who has been featured at Screamin High Park, Desh Pardesh, Masala Mendhi Masti, and

the Asian Heritage Festival. Her poetry has been pub-lished in various anthologies includingUnderstatement and Shakti Ki Awaaz.

As 'Resident Dissident', she is regularly featured on theRadio Program 'Vibe Collective', where she has beeninvited to contribute to political debates on topics asdiverse as Hip Hop, media representations of thefemale body, the Caribana festival, Indigenous identity,and the Tamil protests in Canada. Her essays have beenpublished in the International Journal of theHumanities, Global Tensions, Global Possibilities, andHuman Rights and the Arts: Essays on Global Asia.

Her translations of the poetry of Cheran,V.I.S. Jayapalanand Puthuvai Ratnathurai are also forthcoming in thecollection Human Rights and the Arts in Global Asia.

Fiction award is given in honour of ProfessorKanapathipillai Born in 1903, he received his under-graduate and graduate education inColombo, Sri Lanka, Annamalai, TamilNadu, and the University of London,UK. Trained in Tamil, Sanskrit and Pali,he acquired considerable expertisein the field of epigraphy. After com-

pleting his doctoral studies under the supervision ofProfessor Turner, he joined the University of Colomboas lecturer in Tamil, and later became professor.When

the University of Peradeniya was established, hebecame the first Professor and Head of theDepartment of Tamil, a position he held until 1965. Fora brief period, he also served as Acting Vice-Chancellorat the University of Peradeniya. ProfessorKanapathipillai is known as a major scholar in epigra-phy and linguistics. In addition, he published widely asa novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His playswere performed to much acclaim in Sri Lanka. In addi-tion, he has written a monograph on the history ofSanskrit literature.

received a postgraduate degree in Surgery. Having served as a surgeon for several years, henow works in Family Medicine in the UK. His

Madras Saithapettai English Teachers’ Training Collegeas a lecturer. At the same time he served as a Tamilteacher at Madras Christian College andPachchaiappan College. He was the author of severalbooks. As he had mastered Sanskrit he translatedKishkintha Kandam and Sunthara Kandam of ValmikiRamayanam into Tamil. He paraphrased severalSangam works and brought many ancient Tamil literatures found in Olai in to print.

ners and founders of modern Physics. He alsohad the privilege of attending lecture by AlbertEinstein in Germany. On his return to Ceylon,after obtaining a first class honors Tripos and M.Aand Ph.D from the University of Cambridge wasappointed Professor of Physics at the Universityof Ceylon and subsequently, Dean of the Facultyof Science, Pro-Vice-Chancellor University ofCeylon. He had the privilege of being the first SriLankan Professor of Physics. For nearly 50 yearshe was associated with university teaching andserved as chairman on many academic councilsand commissions including the University GrantsCommission. Special. He also popular-ized the field of Science in the Tamil media bydelivering talks over the Radio and Tamil NewsMedia. He pioneered the Tamil UniversityMovement that led to the establishment of theUniversity of Jaffna and later Eastern Universityof Sri Lanka. In recognition of his contributions toPhysics, the academia in Sri Lanka has estab-lished the Mailvaganam Memorial Lecture eachyear at the Physics Lecture Theatre at theUniversity of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Kirubaharan Sinnadurai was born in the Trincomalee district of Sri Lanka in the year 1960. He wasa student in dentistry in the University when he died. Throughout his short life he was an ardentsupporter of Tamil language and culture and committed to its promotion on an international level.An award in Tamil has been set up in his memory. It is sponsored by Dr. Thushiyanthy andDr.S.Sriharan.

Bahir Vivekanand is a University of Toronto graduate in Human Biology and Post-graduatein Chiropodial/Podiatric Medicine. He specializes in the area of Biomechanics and SportsMedicine. He has 3 multi-discliplinary clinics in Toronto with a wide base of patients. He is com-mitted to the promotion of Tamil language and culture and his past time includes biking, work-ing out at the gym, and exploring the outdoors. He lives in North York with his fiance Jessicaand his 3 beautiful kids, Serena, Ria, and Byran.

Information Technology in TamilAward is given in honour ofSundara Ramaswamy Sundara Ramaswamy began his lit-erary career at the age of 20 bytranslating a Malayalam novel intoTamil. Following this ‘The Story of a

Tamarind Tree’, his first novel was published andwas well received as a work that extended thefrontiers of Tamil novel. This was translated intoEnglish, Hindi, Malayalam and Hebrew.His second novel "J.J. Some Notes" defied all thenotions prevalent in Tamil writing about formand language. It eschewed narration, brought ina tone of intense meditation on the quality ofhuman life and the problems of remaininghuman. The third novel Kulanthaikal, PenkalAnkal was written in an entirely new style andlanguage yet retaining a solid texture.His poems are a severe questioning into one's

existence, perceptions, conflicts and tireless butoften defeated search. Almost all ofRamaswamy's writings, though reaching limitedreadership, have sustained serious literary workin Tamil during the last fifty years. He has alsocontributed significantly to the disciplines of literary criticism and essays and has translatedpoems from English to Tamil.He was awarded the prestigious Kumaran AsanMemorial Award for his collection of poems andin 2001 the Tamil Literary Garden of Canada inassociation with the Centre for South AsianStudies of University of Toronto awarded the IyalVirudhu.

Sunflowers Furniture has continued to successfully serve the communityfor over twenty years. Margie and Vincent de Paul who are responsible for its

success have been recognized for their contributions not only within theTamil community, but also by the country at large. In 2008 the Government

of Canada officially included the success story of Sunflowers Furniture intheir text book material for new immigrants. The story is cited as an example

of how immigrants could successfully begin a new life in Canada.Over the years, the store has received several awards for its achievements

and has been featured in the Toronto Star numerous times. After twodecades, Sunflowers continues to support several fundraising events and

Late Mr. V.T. Ratnam served in the world of journalism art for over 40 years inSri Lanka. His life started as a beat-reporter with Eelanadu, Suthanthiran andThinakaran newspapers then continued as an Editorial Board member ofThinapathi daily until his demise in 1990. Mr. Ratnam also contributed heavilyand whole-heartedly towards the enhancement of Tamil culture and Hinduism.As a person who lived in a Colombo suburb cherished with Muslim neighbours,Mr. Ratnam never needed an address to receive mail or visitors. Even today,twenty-three years after his demise, children born after him would take visitorsto his house just by asking for “Iya’s veedu”. It's just a simple evidence for his trueembracement of multiculturalism and communal integration. In his lovingmemory an award for Translation (Tamil to English) has been established by hisbeloved son Kumar Ratnam to honour his commitment and passion for TamilLiterature.

Ranjith Selva had a love for Tamil literature which came to fruition early in his life.Later when he worked in the Middle East, where he excelled in his banking careerhe expressed a strong desire with the launch of the Tamil Literary Garden in theyear 2001 to work closely with it in the promotion of its work on an internationalbasis. He was in the process of moving to Toronto when he took the initiative toreignite his love of Tamil literature and had made his contributions in variousways. Unfortunately, Ranjith passed away and his involvement with the TamilLiterary Garden ended before it truly began. A legacy that is Ranjith Selva is a legacy that is vibrant and exuberant in its presence. In his loving memory a sponsorship has been established by his daughter, Bairavee Ranjith to honour hiscommitment and passion for Tamil Literature that has longevity beyond just hislifetime.

Thirumurthi Ranganathan, Founder & CEO of ‘Digital Maxim- a specialty eBookspublisher’ from United States is very much passionate about Tamil language.Living in United States for the last 15 years, he has been in constant touch with hisroots – Tamil culture, literature,Tamilnadu, and caring about the Tamil communityaround the world.
