Extreme Cold Climate Home
Thanks/Recognition
● Special thanks to Dr. Joe Lstiburek and Betsy
Pettit AIA, principals of Building Science Corp,
and the DOE Building America Program for the
engineering, architectural drawings and support.
John Woodward , who was our technical advisor on the project ,Marquam George who helped us with the air tightness testing and he gave us the idea to attach the corners to the house . Phil Kaluzza who helped us with the heating and the HRV unit .
Special Thanks to these guys from HCA Housing Department for all there help
● This project was funded through BIA, and
constructed by Hydaburg Cooperative Assoc.,
Housing Dept.
Extreme Cold Climate Design
The important design changes from conventional
construction are:
● Placement and design of the thermal envelope
and weather barriers
● Energy target selected for a Low-Income
Housing project.

100 Year Design Lifespan
The purpose of installing the insulation to the exterior
of the structural framing and sheathing is:
● Keep the structural part of the building warm & dry,
substantially increasing durability
● Prevent poor thermal performance due to moisture
damage
● Eliminate thermal bridging
● Provide a continuous insulation layer around the
conditioned space
● Enhance insulation installation quality control
● Prevent condensing surfaces inside of the exterior
sheathing
Energy Efficiency
● This building rates 96% on the AHFC
Home Energy Rating System or a high
5*+.
● Design Heat Loss 9004 Btu/hr
● Estimated Space Heating Cost $200 per
yr
