Since last weekend, Sikkim Police has been enforcing a fresh set of traffic norms for

area is because these long carsleave no room for emergencyvehicles like firetenders to passthrough which is very importantnow that the monsoons arehere,” explained DSP Bhutia. These vehicles will however beprovided parking space at theParking Lot at Private Bus Standduring the stipulated time period.

Another set of vehicles thathave been prohibited from enter-ing town from 8 to 8 are the TaxiCommanders and Marshalls. ThePolice stated that these vehicles, despite been allotted differentstands throughout Gangtok andorders to operate out of their des-ignated stands only, encroachmost of the space at MG Margleaving no empty spots for privateand Government vehicles. In ameeting held between SikkimPolice and mainline and other taxidrivers’ associations prior to thisdecision, the taxi drivers agreedto co-operate with the Police andhelp in the smooth implementa-tion of the new rules. The DSPalso pointed out that these taxisshould ‘stay’ in their designatedstands rather than drive aroundtown looking for passengers inhotels which results in poachingon the business of local taxis andporters.

Another section of Gangtokthat has seen major changes is

the stretch from Deorali to Syari.Residents of the locality com-plained that on many instancesof medical emergency even am-bulances could not pass onthrough to the lower reaches ofSyari due to the numerous pri-vate and Govt.. vehicles that arecarelessly parked along thisstretch at night. After a thoroughinspection by the Traffic Policelast week, this otherwise perpetu-ally clogged stretch now looksmore organised and traffic flowis much smoother. Various sec-tions of the road have now beenearmarked as parking and non-parking lanes and boards andsigns have been put up announc-ing the new rules.

Citing the co-operation fromthe taxi drivers as an example, the DSP admitted that althoughthe Traffic Police will face criti-cism initially, its initiative will beappreciated eventually.

“Sikkim Police would like torequest all vehicles owners tobear with us and render co-op-eration in order to get rid of thistraffic mess that Gangtok hasbecome. We also request thepublic and vehicle-owners aliketo come forward with grievancesand offer suggestions on how totackle the problem better,” heended.

Yet another rock concert?Haven’t we had enough?Maybe not.

After many years of virtualdrought of rock music inGangtok, the last one year hasseen a deluge with rock concertsback on the scene, big time. Forrock music fans, these are headbanging times. After home-grown Anarchy upset the applecart last fortnight and rockedtheir way into the local rock mu-sic hall of fame, it is now the turnof the band across the Rangit tojoin the ever-growing list.

The Reincarnation [Resur-rection of Souls], Darjeeling’shottest band will perform in the“Here to Eternity” concert at theSangram Hall on Saturday, June28.

For the novices in the re-gion’s music scene, Reincarna-tion is one the most talented andappreciated bands thatDarjeeling has seen in recenttimes. In the last five years, theband has been able to breathenew life into the somewhat stag-nant music scene of Darjeeling, marred by political unrest.

The six-member band got to-gether in 1998, when Vicky, hisyounger brother Sandeep andcousin Kalyan decided to taketheir closet guitaring and bath-room singing to a wider audi-ence. Soon, Sahadeo, Sanjeetand Dewakar joined them and

the Reincarnation took birth. With Vicky at the vocals,

Sandeep doing the rhythm,Sahadeo the lead guitar andKalyan at the bass, Sanjeet tookcare of the drums and Dewakar, the keyboard, and the band wassoon performing at minor gigs inDarjeeling.

The big break came a yearlater when they opened forPralaya and the Magnum Opusin Darjeeling. Despite beingpitted against the two big-gest bands at thetime, the boysmanaged toget the at-tent ionof thecrowd.

This was followed by a concertduring the Sahyog Festival inDarjeeling in 1999.

However, the Reincarna-tion’s biggest moment was whenthey made a clean sweep of allthe major awards at the IITKharagpur festival in Y2K. WhileVicky walked away with the bestvocals award, the best lead gui-tarist title went to Sahadeo andthe best drummer was bagged

by Sanjeet! Needless to add,Reincarnation was

declared the BestBand.

This

was followed by a series of con-certs in the Darjeeling Hills. Thisyear, they opened for 1974 ADin Siliguri.

What sets the band apartfrom the numerous others isperhaps their willingness to ex-periment with different forms ofmusic and not just sticking todoing cover versions of Englishrock bands. The Reincarnationstood first in the first Nepali popcompetition in Darjeeling in 2000which led to their recording theirfirst solo Nepali rock ballad, HijoSamma, which found its way intothe “Gorkha Rocks” compilationalbum. Early this year, they re-corded their first Nepali rock al-bum, which is titled, but ofcourse, Hijo Samma!

Having played at countlessgigs and shows, Gangtok’sconcert is a “dream come true”

for the band.“We wanted to play in

Gangtok for a long time. Finally, its happening,” says Vicky.

As far is their brand of mu-sic is concerned, the Reincarna-tion has plenty of influences.Growing up on a staple dose ofIron Maiden, Deep Purple,Metallica, Led Zeppelin as mostyoungsters of the region, theirmusic still stands apart evenwhen they are doing cover ver-sions.

It’s time that Gangtok had ataste of their music.

ROCK REINCARNATES

Honestly, this bit of writingdoes not need to beregular. I mean, for

something to be as regular, asthe horoscope for instance, there would have to be a wholelot of characters involved. Andmy kind of crap aggresively in-volves just a handful of fortunatesouls that live upon the lessermass. Live upon? Sounds veryvery carnivorous. CAR-nivorouswould be appropriate rather, butnot this time.

This week, lets take a peekinto the most basic of all humanrequirements. Shelter. Some-body’s house for instance. It’snot everyday that your houserecieves guests in the form ofstar-studded police officerswhose only good intention is towarn you not to hang (dry)clothes in YOUR OWN backyardor porch. Maybe you forgot topay the last month’s rent for theporch? Maybe. So, DON’T leaveYOUR clothes on YOUR bal-cony, better still remove YOURclothesline.

You think I am being emo-tional? Talking about emotions, don’t express yours’ just any-where in Gangtok. Your intimateexpressions of love, consent ofboth parties aside and if you’re notmarried BUT an adult, is limitedto your house. Anywhere else?Hehe. You get the privilege tocarry yourself and everything elsethrough town to the nearest shel-ter, ‘Help Us Help You’! Indeed!

I suddenly get a feeling that Iam shooting my mouth way overthe limit and could actually be in-viting some HELP my way too.Maybe, I have this totally wrongconcept about freedom of ex-pression. Or maybe not! Anyway, happy and safe monsoons eve-ryone. MOURN SOON! hehe!

From your MISTER

SPIKE!

HOW COULD I SAYANYTHING ABOUTSOMETHING THAT I

DINT KNOW?Anyway, so much for a

good friend!- Risako Chhu -

Last year, Seema had auditionedfor the Channel V Popstars con-test and made it to the final fiveand became part of the Popstarsband VIVA!. After cutting theirfirst album and a series of televi-sion and live performances,Seema quit VIVA soon to pursueher own interests, which includesmore involvement with the Art ofLiving Foundation activities, withwhom she has been associatedfor three and half years now. This22 year old from Pune is a PostGraduate Diploma holder inschool psychology and has beentaking workshops for the creativeenhancement of children and isalso a teacher with the AOLFoundation back home in Pune.

Why did you quit VIVA?Simply because I wanted to bemore actively involved in socialwork and being part of the banddid not give much scope for that.

When you made it to final fiveof the Channel V Popstarscontest, you gained instantfame and became a house-hold name overnight. Yet yougave up all that to pursue your“own interests” as you put it.Why? Don’t you miss it all?

with cousins, heading straightfor the Community Hall.

The former VIVA memberdoes not disappoint one bit.Right from the time she stepson the stage and holds themicrophone, Seema takes fullcontrol and the next few min-utes, the audience - a mixtureof Art of Living members, bubbly teenagers and a groupof head-bangers - are up ontheir feet, clapping and sing-ing along with her!

That Seema is an excep-tionally talented performer isevident from the first songshe belts out and her amaz-ing ability to get the audienceinvolved in the music keepsthem riveted throughout. Shetalks to you, cajoles you tosing and dance along with herand “just have a great time,”as she puts it. And not onlythat, Seema also radiates agreat deal of warmth as shesings about love and devo-t ion; a warmth she soonpasses on to the enthusias-tic audience.

The audience is treated tosome great rendi t ions ofCel ine Dion and Eaglestracks, along with inspira-

No, not really. I have gainedmuch more through my associa-tion with the AOL Foundation.Just look around me now. I haveall the love, affection and acco-lades I need from what I am do-ing right now. Popstars and VIVA!were a great experience but thisis what I really want to do.

Why the Art of Living Founda-tion?Because it is what I believe in. Ithas given me the platform andthe means to reach out to amuch wider audience and inter-act with them on a more per-sonal level. I am singing, whichI cannot give up and actively in-volved in social work.

seema ramchandani

Apart from your associationwith the AOL Foundation, what are your future plans?I am actively involved with theAOL. I am a AOL teacher backhome in Pune. I am also work-ing on my first solo album, whichshould be out in the markets bythe end of this year.

What kinds of music can weexpect from your solo album?A blend of traditional and mod-ern sounds, fusion world musicwith lots of inspirational songs.

Are you open to playbacksinging?Maybe, if I get the chance to singthe kind of music I love.

Seema Ramchandani performs at theCommunity Hall, Gangtok

tional and devotional songs ofthe AOL Foundation for twohours. She has added a freshspin to bhajans; the songsare peppy, pulsating and setto rock music, accompaniedby a live band. A heady mixof traditional devotion withmodern beats.

Seema even caters to thepers is tent demands of agroup of boys who want herto sing Bryan Adams’ “Sum-mer of 69” and gives an im-promptu performance, muchto their delight. However, therequest to sing songs fromthe VIVA album is politelybrushed aside by her and shest icks to “more inspi r ingsongs.”

Gangtok is the last leg ofher North Eastern tour organ-ised by the AOL Foundation, after successful shows inDimapur, Shi l long andGuwahati. Her split with VIVAnotwithstanding, judging bythe crowd of teenagers thatflocks around her after theshow for autographs, she isalso proving to be a youthicon in her own r ight . D[Verse 1:]

Baby when I think about The day

that we first met (the day that we

first met)

Wasn’t lookin for what I found But

I found you

And I’m bound to find happiness

in being around you

[Chorus:]

I’m glad when I’m makin love to

you I’m glad for the way you

make me feel

I love it cause you seem to blow

my mind every time I’m glad when

you walk you hold my hand

I’m happy that you know how to

be a man I’m glad that you came

into my life I’m so glad

[Verse 2:]

I dig the way that you get down

(you get down for ‘bout)

And you still know how to hold

me (and you still know how to

hold me)

Perfect blend, masculine (can’t

get enough now) I think I’m in

love, damn finally

[Chorus:]

[Bridge:]

I’m glad that you turned out to be

That certain someone special

who makes this life worth living

So say that you won’t leave

Cause since the day you came

I’ve been glad

[Instrumental break]

[Chorus:]

The second Channel V Popstar

Search is nearing completion. 24

finalists have been selected from

over thousands of contenders from all

over the country. Makeovers and train-

ing sessions later, these 24 finalists will

compete for a place in the sun. Five new

popstars will debut on our channels to

become household names over the next

year. This time it’s not going to be an all

girl’s band. Two boys and three girls will

form the new group. Tears, joy, hope

and disappointment were all evident

throughout the run –up to the finals.

What few of us know is that we have in

Gangtok one young man who braved

the glare of this public competition.

Prashant Rasailly did not make it be-

yond the second round but is still happy

about the experience. “I heard about the

search in April. Being a singer I thought

this was a good opportunity. I had to

come back but it was a great experi-

ence and I’m glad I took part in it”, he

says. On 15th May, the first day of the

audition, Prashant lined up along with

500 other contestants. Out of these only

400 were allowed to take part in the

audition due to lack of time. The judges

were singers Palash Sen, Mehnaaz and

VJ Purab from Channel V. Groups of

five each were made and given the lyr-

ics of the songs they were supposed to

sing. “Koi kahen..”, from the film Dil

Chahta hai was compulsory for all. I

sang this song and also “I believe in you”

by Don Williams”, recalls Prashant. So

was he nervous? “I thought I would be

but surprisingly I felt quite cool and re-

laxed”, he says. Prashant sang well

enough to make it to the second round.

On the way 200 contestants were sent

home. The second round was sched-

uled for the next day. This was the sing

and dance round. “They asked me to

sing any fast number and dance while

singing. I sang Koi Kahen again but just

could not dance. I have never danced

in my life and found it quite difficult to

dance while singing”, says Prashant

laughing at his attempts. The fact that

15 camera teams were shooting this

performance must have been quite

daunting for this shy boy from the hills.

What helped was that only 67 out of the

initial 500 made it to the third round. So

what lessons has he learned from this

experience? “I think I must take up

dancing classes. I was two left feet out

there!”, he says still amused at the

memory. “But it’s good to go out there

and compete with the city people and

other performers. You come to know

exactly where you stand. Just perform-

ing in Gangtok does not give you an

idea of the competition.”, he adds.

Back in Gangtok Prashant is al-

ready busy organizing his next per-

formance. In August he plans to hold

a concert at Sangram Hall. But with a

difference. “It’s going to be more of a

dance and Karaoke party. I am going

to sing and also play techno, trance

and other music. It’s a new concept

and I want everyone to have a good

time”, says Prashant. With his never-

say-die attitude and quiet determina-

tion Prashant Rasailly has many aces

up his sleeve. This is not the last we’re

hearing of him. Of that you can be

sure.

Ever heard of anger management? Apparently serious young genetic sci-

entist, Bruce Banner (Eric Bana),hasn't been to a single class. When he gets angry, he trans-forms into the not so jolly greengiant and thunders into destruc-tive rampages annihilating notonly things and places, but peo-ple - and a few mutant canines -as well. This becomes even moreof a problem when Banner be-gins to feel that the dangerousand darkly alluring unwantedpresence within him is familiar. With his trusty girlfriend by hisside (played with fully-realizedpathos by Jennifer Connelly), theDr. Jeckyl/ Mr. King Kong par-takes on an exciting, and oftenterrifying, journey to find out thetruth about himself.

I am a Marvel comic freak

and I vaguely remember the TVseries, so I started watching itwith preconceived notions and awhole lot of expectations (I'll ad-mit I was hoping for a fresh takeon a tired genre from Ang Lee,who is one of my favorite direc-tors). I was not only not disap-pointed, I was delighted - TheHulk is better than Daredevil andSpider-Man put together, and willno doubt find its place among thecomic-book-to-film classics like

Superman and Batman. The CGI effects are top notch

and the larger-than-life Hulk, while obviously not personifiedby a human being, is believablebecause he is supposed to be amutant comic book creature. He's not supposed to look likeyou or me, but in the facial close-ups the CGI melding with Bana'smug is truly seamless. The ed-its, cuts, dissolves and occa-sional use of split-screen is sheergraphic novel genius, and theeye candy is nicely balanced withsolid story and emotional impact.

The casting in The Hulk is pic-ture-perfect. The leads are peo-ple we care about. Sam Elliottplays a by-the-book, if zealous, military commander, while NickNolte, plays the mad scientist tothe hilt.

The Hulk is incredible and thecamera print available is fairlygood.
