PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT

INSTRUMENTAL AND VOICE TUITION Mark Reynolds: Head of Performing Arts (ECAs/Events)

Instrumental and vocal tuition raises the musical attainment of pupils, encourages self-confidence and helps pupils develop a sense of personal achievement and self-expression.

Tuition Tuition is provided by a team of visiting self-employed teachers using the facilities at Amesbury. Tuition is available in the following:

Bass Guitar Classical Guitar Clarinet Cornet Drums Electric Guitar Flute French Horn Piano Percussion Recorder Saxophone Tenor Horn Trombone Trumpet Viola Violin Vocal

It may be possible to provide tuition on other instruments subject to sufficient demand and the availability of a teacher.

Pre-Prep (Years 1 & 2) Lessons will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis to Year 2 and, if space permits, to Year 1. Any parent who wishes to commence music lessons for their child prior to Year 1 should email [email protected]

Prep School (Years 3-8) With terms differing in length, the total number of lessons given in any term can vary. Lessons last for thirty minutes. This allows for specific teaching and a clear programme of study which aids the development of both technical and stylistic skills.

Timetables for lessons are organised on a rotating system and are posted in advance, on the music notice board in the Performing Arts Centre. It is the responsibility of the pupil to make the necessary arrangements with subject staff to be excused for a music lesson and to undertake to make up class work afterwards.

This allows minimal disruption to the academic curriculum. Break and lunch time lesson slots are allocated to pupils with educational needs, and priority then being given to Year 8 pupils who are sitting Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations.

Reporting Progress is monitored throughout the year as follows:

Michaelmas Term Parents are invited to sit in on one lesson during the first weeks of tuition. This is a time when work habits and forward planning can be discussed. Trinity Term

A written report will be included at the end of each term.

A practice diary is used as an aide memoire for the pupil and a point of contact between the teacher and parent. This diary is used as a positive aid to encourage regular work habits.

Examinations Pupils are under no obligation to take examinations, but it is recognised that in most cases they provide a valuable incentive and measure of progress. Amesbury enters pupils for examinations administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall. Pupils entered for examinations will have the cost of the entry fee added to the end of term bill.

Additional requirements for tuition Upon acceptance of instrumental lessons you will be contacted by the relevant tutor to discuss any additional requirements needed for tuition. Where music is concerned your child will be supplied with the appropriate manual, the cost of which will be added to the end of term bill.

Fees Payment for tuition is required each term upon receipt of an invoice sent by individual instrumental tutors. Charges for lessons are £39.00 per hour which is equivalent to £19.50 per half hour lesson.

Speech and Drama lessons develop communication skills and give pupils the confidence to explore and enjoy performance. These classes teach pupils to use their voices safely, to work productively with others, and to use their imagination to create original and entertaining characters. Pupils are introduced to classic and modern literature - poems, books, plays, television and film scripts.

Prep School (Years 3-8) Speech and Drama lessons are taught in groups of no more than six per group in a 30 minute session. Lessons are scheduled outside the core curriculum subject times. In most cases lessons take place during break times or the Performing Arts scheduled sessions each week. Individual tuition for Drama Scholars may be arranged by special agreement.

Reporting A progress report at the end of Michaelmas Term and a written report is included in the Trinity Term. All pupils taking a LAMDA examination will receive a written report from the examiner. Examinations LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) performance examinations usually take place during the Lent or Trinity Term. However, other exam boards are currently under consideration. All pupils will be entered for an exam at the appropriate grade. Additional requirements for tuition Pupils should provide an A4 folder (any type) in which to keep their work. All other materials will be provided.

Fees Payment for tuition will be invoiced each term by the Head of Drama. Group lessons are £80.00 per term (10 lessons). Individual scholarship tuition is £120.00 per term (10 x 20 minute lessons). Examination fees will be added to your school fees bill.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY M:TECH

M:Tech is a music and media technology programme in which children

create exciting music through a series of fun projects. These range

from composing songs in a given genre (e.g. Pop / Rock / Hip-Hop)

through to creating jingles, sound effects and dialogue to TV adverts,

cartoons and radio shows. M:Tech is suitable for all levels of musical

ability and at the end of term a grade book, certificate and digital

download of their composition are sent home so that you can listen to

the music your child has created.

Visit www.mtechonline.co.uk/parents to watch a 5 minute video on

M:Tech.

Prep School (Years 3-8) Lessons are available for pupils in Years 3-8 on Tuesday, Wednesday

and Friday lunchtimes. Groups of up to six children will be allocated

upon receipt of numbers; children unsuccessful in securing a place will

be added to a waiting list and parents will be kept informed.

ISTD Imperial Ballet (Reception upwards).

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing has a strong and positive

focus on ballet technique, set exercises, spatial awareness and

musicality. These lessons aim to improve posture, increase confidence

and provide a strong dance foundation. The lessons comprise of barre,

travel, centre work and choreography.

Why? It is universally understood that ballet is the core of any dancer’s training; ballet lays the foundation to a dancer’s strength, spatial awareness and ear for music.

Musicality and Performance Instruction for Ballet (Years 5-8).

The distinction between a good dancer and a great one is their

commitment to the music they are dancing to. The lesson has been

crafted specifically for the advanced ballet dancer, to fuse their technical

movement to emotion. This lesson juggles choreography, improvisation,

discussion and set homework.

Why? If your son/daughter has a fairly developed foundation in dance, this lesson will nourish their performance and push them light years ahead in terms of creating an emotional connection to their stimulus.

ISTD Modern (Nursery upwards).

An expressive form of dance that includes improvisation, co-ordination,

flexibility, rhythm and technique.

Why? Modern centralises around mastering your sense of rhythm and use of levels and space. As the pupil develops, so too does the complexity of the routines. The choreography includes jazz, ballet and street.

Tap (Years 1 & 2).

Excellent for rhythm, performance, control and your ear for music.

There’s no better genre to develop the understanding of rhythm and its

importance. The pupils learn how to control their feet and to use them to

‘vocalise’ complex rhythms within popular music.

Why? This class is a wonderful combination of technique and theatre

that will push the pupil ahead in terms of rhythmic development.

Hip-Hop (Years 1-8).

A high-energy class combining street, salsa, popping and jazz. This class

is all about performance, challenging moves, choreography, creativity and

musicality. The class will encourage group participation in terms of

choreography and team work.

Why? With the boom in commercial dance, this is the class for the pupil who has been bowled over by the likes of Michael Jackson, Diversity and any of the recent dance movies.

Contemporary (Years 5-8).

This class will develop the pupil’s creative mind by considering dance as a

way of telling narratives and showing emotion. Dabbling with various

genres of music, this class involves lots of jumps, lifts and discussions on

how to best portray set stimulus. Each class revolves around

improvisation, strength, creativity and open-mindedness.

Why? An extremely freeing form of dance, this genre is a handy tool for confidence, esteem and endless creativity. The class is deliberately structured to make the pupil feel confident enough to try anything out. Particularly, this is a great class for any pupil who is/will be auditioning in the future (many auditions focus on improvisation).

Should your child be unable to attend a lesson due to illness or injury, this lesson must be paid for in full. Where long term illness, for example broken arm/leg, has occurred and the lesson can be sold to another child with agreement by the coach/teacher then no charge will be made.

All pupils will continue Extra-Curricular Activities from term to term, year on year (see below), unless notice to withdraw is given. When withdrawing a pupil from an activity, notice of withdrawal must be given before the first day of the half term holiday in order for payment and lessons to cease on the last day of that term. If notice is given after the first day of the half term holiday, the lessons will continue and payment will be expected until the end of the following term.

Extra-Curricular Activities are deemed a privilege based on the assumption that a child is behaving well in school. Therefore, if a child has behaved poorly and has been awarded a detention, the detention will take precedence and the child will be required to attend the detention. The cost of the missed Extra-Curricular lesson will be the responsibility of the parent, not the school.
