Looking to the future

2013 is a year to celebrate. Lladró is celebrating its 60th year and we wish to share with you, our public, the joy and happiness of having arrived this far and the desire to continue looking toward the future with newfound excitement. That’s why we have prepared a special issue for you, featuring a very personal interview with Juan Lladró, in which the elder of the brand’s three founding brothers looks back over a story of passion for porcelain.

We are celebrating this anniversary with what we know best: our porcelains. Some of Lladró’s best-loved works have been revamped especially for the occasion in a commemorative series, while the new issues for spring are sure to make a big splash, reflecting passions such as art, nature, love, motherhood or the spiritual wealth of the world’s cultures.

In addition, a new version of the Naturofantastic collection has been launched to help set the dinner table for very special occasions. These practical and elegant objects combine natural forms with fantasy and are now available in vibrant exotic colors that exude joie de vivre. To light up life’s best moments, the new issues also include lamps created from some of the brand’s existing pieces, continuing our focus on lighting without renouncing the decorative potential of our figurines.

This spring also has a pleasant surprise in store for Lladró Gold Club members with the premiere piece Dancers of the Nile now available exclusively to them. Decorated with golden luster, this exquisite porcelain is set to become a foremost piece for Lladró’s most exclusive club.

As always, in the Lladró Universe section we share with you the brand’s recent events that took place around the world. We hope that 2013 will hold in store many more opportunities to meet again during the events planned to celebrate our 60th anniversary, including a touring exhibition of Lladró works representing the brand’s history so far. With this special issue of Expressions we wish to thank you for your continuing loyalty.

“We want our works to have elegance, to be expressive, to exude life, to have feelings. We want them to reflect the good side of life, the positive values of a human being, all that which dignifies life.” Juan, José and Vicente, founders of Lladró

Juan Lladró has all the self-possession and compo-

sure lent by his 86 years, 60 of them at the front of the company, and yet he is still as excited as ever by the art that has always been behind his work. He is more than willing to reminisce about his beginnings but also to look to the future with the same enthusiasm with which he made his first figurines, together with his brothers José and Vicente, in the small family work-shop nearby today’s The City of Porcelain.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, but Lladró’s ability to rein-vent itself has enabled the brand to situate itself at the forefront of contempo-rary creation, with the assis-tance of Juan’s daughters Rosa and Ángeles, an expert creative team and dynamic management. A spirit of change that remains alive in the words of Juan Lladró.

After sixty years at the head of Lladró you have accumu-lated many experiences, but

can you tell us about the beginnings? Where did it all start?

That Lladró exists at all is thanks to the fact that we followed our vocation for art, that we chose to do what we were truly passionate about and that we prepared ourselves to practice it to the best of our abilities. During all this time, we have combined our interest in art with training and studying. Though it might sound obvious, it is very easily forgotten in these times when it often seems that one doesn’t seem to know the purpose of what one is studying. My brothers and I had a goal: to prepare ourselves to be top-class professionals. Our interests were not just dreams because we built a project around them and to make this project real we needed to perfect our chosen craft. It was with this mission that we trained ourselves, stud-ying drawing and art, first as apprentices and then working in ceramic companies that were the forerunners of our future, which is now our past and our present. So, in a few years, we earned a name for ourselves within the profession. Of course, once you have reached a posi-tion in which you are ready to do what you really want, you have to set out on your own.

Today Lladró is a multina-tional company exporting to over 120 countries on the five continents. How does one achieve such worldwide prestige?

Everything started in a small workshop in the backyard of our family home, in Almàs-sera, very near where The City of Porcelain now stands. There, three adventurous young men set out on a journey, making ornamental pieces and vases and firing them in a small Moorish kiln. We had no fixed goal for the future but we were always perfectionists with a heightened sense of detail. And we have stayed true to this over the last sixty years and in fact you could call it our defining feature. We tried out our first experiments in the market place and began to see what was more successful. Between creating to sell and selling to know what to create, the business grew steadily and won a loyal customer base. It was incredible to see how the orders started to pour in after

we showed our work through a network of representatives. And while we created and served orders, they promoted and sold. The company grew quickly, at a rate of over 50% per year, and after the first ten years we had 100 workers. This meant we had to move to bigger premises. And from 100 we grew to 300, and then 500, and 1000… until even-tually having 2600 employees scattered around the world. Having said that, every single Lladró creation has always been made here at our work-shops in Valencia.

What role does the creative team play in the evolution of Lladró?

At Lladró, know-how is always at the service of creativity. My brothers and I had studied art

2013Six decades creating art in porcelain. Though the years have flown by, Lladró’s sixty years has been a long road signposted by constancy and, above all else, by dreams and ambition. While none of it would have

been possible without human talent, technology, and science, above all, the materials used in the process also played a key role. Juan Lladró guides us through this story of a passion for porcelain.

and won prizes at the School of Arts and Crafts, which inciden-tally I would strongly recom-mend to anyone interested in following a career in art. We were painters, and so the deco-ration part was our strong-point but we had to round off our experience by learning other parts of the trade. One of Lladró’s greatest merits has been to bring on board the best sculptors. First there was Fulgencio García, Juan Huerta, Salvador Debón, and now we still have many excellent artists. We handpicked them and then continued their training here in-house. We work closely with them and are in continual contact, because it is neces-sary for the proper develop-ment of the work. I believe that today we have the best team of porcelain artists and sculptors in the world. And then there are the designers, ornamenta-tion artists, painters, master kiln firers… each one specialized in his particular area but with an overall vision of the whole process, so that each step in the chain is understood and guaranteed. In a company that makes all its pieces entirely by hand, its workers and their skills and sensibilities are unques-tionably its most valuable asset. After all, the third pillar of Lladró, along with painting and sculpture, is the industrial part, which we had to learn and perfect.

Producing Lladró porcelains in a totally handcrafted process has not been a bed of roses. What difficulties have you had to overcome?

All the difficulties in the world. We were conversant with painting and sculpture, which are just two aspects of creating

porcelain, but we knew very little about the chemical part of the actual production. So we had to learn all about the complexities involved in the elaboration of the material, including the firing. And of course there were the commer-cial aspects, accounting, admin, etc. All the tasks essen-tial to the proper running of a company. Once we had learned them, we began the journey toward perfection, toward worldwide prestige. We began presenting our works in fairs here in Spain and around the world, pitting ourselves against the competition and

then vying for leadership, even outstripping our competitors. We were no longer competing in a local market or only in the field of porcelain but with world leaders in the luxury, décor and gift sectors. And here Lladró has worked tirelessly: in image, in advertising, in pricing … We have always been fear-less about facing new chal-lenges head-on, tackling each new experience with greater specialization and know-how. A constant commitment with a search for excellence has always been part of our DNA.

Speaking of technical aspects, Lladró is a pioneer in major facets of porcelain production. Can you tell us more about them?

I remember one time showing one of our pieces to the tech-nical director of a famous porcelain factory in Europe and asking him “do you like it?” After he answered “very much”, I told him it was “a single firing”, to which he replied “impossible”. And he repeated it three times. Well, I thought to myself, all the better because that means they won’t even try. Single-firing was a milestone in its day, and one of our greatest achievements. We put all our money on being able to get it right on the first go and we achieved our aim. Our porcelains are fired and deco-rated at over 1300º C / 2372º

F, so the colors of our pieces are different to so-called “vitri-fiable” colors, which undergo two or three firings at lower temperatures: one for dehy-dration, another for the firing of the porcelain and another for the decoration. If you fire a piece two or three times you can correct errors. In fact the famous porcelains of antiquity were fired several times, to be able to decorate them in several phases. What I am trying to say is that we stake everything on one single card. Which is why we need absolute control over the porcelain. Here at Lladró, we trained and prepared our staff based on our own expe-rience until putting together a team of experts dedicated to investigating in order to ensure

minimum defects. We have technicians for each step in the process because we believe that this is the only way of achieving the excellence we are after in our creations, which I also believe is what our customers expect.

After sixty years creating art in porcelain, what is it about this fine material that is still capable of arousing so much passion in you?

Porcelain is a mystery. Prestig-ious brands have always jeal-ously guarded the secrets of achieving good porcelain. Science and chemistry obvi-ously have a big part to play. It is no accident that when it was first discovered in China, during the Tang dynasty (618-917), it was called “white gold”, and it was later the cause of treason and betrayal in eighteenth century Europe. It was not just a case of finding out the formula, which you can now find in text-books, because the materials come from various places and have different compositions, which means that the combi-nation of components has different reactions. The form of the porcelain particles (flakes or grains) has a bearing on the composition and the produc-tion of the porcelain, because it determines whether, even with the same formula, what you want to do is feasible or not. Or at least for us, because you can also make pieces of porcelain or gres with other characteristics and the same hardness, but not with the same beauty. When people buy porcelain, they see the hard work that goes into the artistic side, but not the problems involved in control-ling the material in itself.Everything is important, but

· EXPRESSIONS4

kiln, you never know what is going to happen. That's why working with porcelain is such an exciting challenge.”

Page 5: Expressions I 2013 ENG

what ultimately decides the outcome is the kiln. Until the piece has been fired, you never really know what is going to happen. In this regard, it is like a bag of surprises and every time you open the door, you really don’t know what to expect. After all porcelain is a living breathing material, it trans-forms, it is ungovernable, and that makes it such an exciting challenge. I always say that as well as an art form, porcelain is a science. And I would go even further and say it is a wonder of nature.

After a whole lifetime dedi-cated to porcelain, what has it given you in return?

Porcelain has given me so many things, though it has also demanded a lot from me and a great spirit of sacrifice. As it is a fine material, connoisseurs know how to appreciate and value it. Its beauty is captivating and this brings you into contact with many outstanding people who recognize the merit of a work of art. An artwork can also be made from clay, and that’s where the talent of the

sculptor comes in, but if you create a good sculpture with the fineness of porcelain, then you are going one step further and achieving that unique piece that brings with it both admiration and prestige.Among the many unexpected things that this business has given me is the chance to meet people who I would never have met otherwise. For instance, we have had an audience in the Vatican, first with Paul VI and then with John Paul II. I remember that we gave Paul VI the gift of the Three Wise Men in 1969, just a few months before the first moon landing. And then the Pope chose these pieces by Lladró as a gift for the crew of Apollo XI, because he said they symbolized the three astronauts. Years later, Buzz Aldrin himself visited The City of Porcelain and we gave him

a gift of the piece The Apollo landing, a limited edition created in 1994 to commemo-rate the 25th anniversary of the landing on the moon.We have also been visited by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and by Queen Sofía when she was still a princess. We have met Ronald Reagan and have been at the White House with George Bush Sr. We were intro-duced to Bush by Gordon Nagler, Vice-Admiral of the US Sixth Fleet, who also came to Valencia. More recently, we welcomed the former US President Jimmy Carter here. We have also met many celebrities, including Michael Douglas, Charlton Heston and even Michael Jackson himself, who contacted us because he wanted to know us better and visit our workshops.

After this long road, is there something you are espe-cially proud of?

I am really proud that so many different people around the world love our creations. It is true that our pieces are the expres-sion of universal values, but we also do our utmost to engage with the feelings of the different cultures of the world. Ranging from the Christian faith to Hinduism, as well as Japanese traditions or Buddhism… each one of our creations is made with a profound admiration and respect for traditions that are a source of inspiration and

a challenge for our artists. The fact that our figurines are to be found in the homes of millions of people around the world means they are moved by our works, that we touch their hearts. That makes me enor-mously proud and also grateful.

Finally, we could not end this interview without asking you about the future of Lladró.

First of all, this year we are caught up in the celebrations for our 60th anniversary. We are organizing a range of activities and events around the world, among which I would high-light a retrospective exhibition of Lladró vanguard porcelains. Besides continuing with our traditional lines, we will also keep exploring new aesthetic paths, with our functional lines of lighting, L'Art de la Table and mirrors focused on design and interiors. In short, we are going to carry on doing what we have always done, which is always moving forward. Human talent is what drives this project. Each company has its leaders and lasts as long as they do. If you start saying that customers no longer want a certain product, that tastes are changing, then it is you that is wrong. A company is nothing without the people behind it. If the people do not have sufficient sensibility and the necessary qualities, the company will wither. Success in business is a mixture of making the right decisions and hard work, of vocation and a spirit of sacrifice. It only remains for me to wish and trust that Lladró maintains its vision and keeps moving forward on the road to excellence.

Passion and soul(60th anniversary)[38 x 17 cm, 15" x 6 3/4"] Ref. 01008683

Lladró has created an extensive body of work that already embraces 60 years of production of the world’s most widely recognized art porcelain. Its team of artists has created pieces which have won a place in millions of homes on the five continents. Taken together, Lladró works form a little universe populated with countless characters that have captivated various generations of porcelain lovers. As always, among these creations some have earned a special place for their universal message or for the theme they depict, making them eternal Lladrós.

This is the case of pieces such as Allegory to the Peace, one of Lladró’s first works in gres, which is now making a comeback in porcelain with a totally new look. The soft finish, between matte and satin, and the contrast between the enamels of the clothing and the clarity of the skin, help to achieve a sense of harmony in this hymn to peace and hope with which the brand wishes to celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Childhood and spirituality are two themes that Lladró artists return to again and again but always from a new angle. This is what they have done in the new versions of Skirt full of flowers, Gathering flowers and Heaven’s harvest. As one would expect from a proper celebration, there is no shortage of flowers, one of the brand’s signatures due to the painstaking elaboration of each variety. In this case, the original flowers have been replaced by sunflowers, used for the very first time in a Lladró piece. A tribute to the bright sun that always shines in the country where the Lladró brothers were born.

As a finishing touch to a work 100% Made in Spain, there is a brand new piece with a truly authentic touch. Passion and soul, with its intense reds and blacks against the dazzling white of the dress, updates a theme that runs through the whole of Lladró’s work, giving it a fresh contemporary feel.

Updated forms and original decorations in tune with the sensibility of the new times, but always with the unmistakable air of authentic works. Pieces destined to be, once again, amongst our best-loved works.

Lladró is celebrating its 60th anniversary and some of its best-loved pieces have been dressed up especially for the occasion. Eternal Lladrós that have won the hearts of thousands of people all over the world and are now available with new decoration. And in addition we have a new dancer which recalls the origins of a work 100% Made in Spain. A knowing nod to the brand’s core themes and a further demonstration of Lladró’s ability to reinvent itself.

The base of these pieces includes a decal commemorating Lladró’s 60th anniversary.

The current boom in gastronomy is consolidating the perception of cuisine as an art form in itself and the experience of sharing it as pure pleasure. Apart from savoring a good dish in the appropriate setting and atmosphere, we also want to find out all about its ingredients, how it was prepared, where the inspiration came from… This was the idea behind Lladró’s invitation to expert chefs to create their signature recipes in the perfect environment and serve them in some of our creations for l’art de la table. The dishes and the pieces they are served in are mutually inspired in a rewarding exchange of the natural and the fantastic we have called Naturofantastic Cuisine.

For the presentation, the chef has chosen pieces from The Parrot Party collection, romantic yet with all the light-hearted freshness of the Mediterranean. An invitation to share from the same dish, under candlelight and with our lovebirds as the only witnesses. After all, love is in the details.

Quique DacostaThe restaurant that bears his name in Denia (Alicante) recently received its third Michelin star. Here, by the sea, this expert chef has prepared a table for two with a delicious, fresh and "proudly Mediterranean" menu. In the middle of this culinary ecosystem, in the shade of the olive tree in his garden, pieces from Naturofantastic are laden with food in a perfect marriage with the whiteness of the building and the golden yellow of the sun. At the point where tradition meets cutting-edge, creativity overflows in a symphony of textures and colors, pampering each dish and cradling every bottle.

After six decades revolutionizing the field of decorative arts with its superb control of sculpture, Lladró contin-ues reinventing itself, now opting for functional lines,

especially in lighting. With new lamps based on its porcelain creations, the brand adds a new dimension to its art without forsaking the decorative strength of its figurines.

if you think about it, the proposal is only too logical because, ultimately, sculpture is the art of the form and of light. The latter, in its multiple facets, is combined with volumes, endowing the work with subtle nuances, depending on your angle of vision, which enhance the expressive power of the piece. in this way, form and light come together to create a spectacular source of sensations capable of adding a unique personality to any corner of the home.

in addition, the brand plays with the advantage of its wide range of existing themes, styles, sizes and finishes in its catalogue of figurines, meaning that the decorative possibilities of these lamps are equally wide-ranging. Lladró artists have carefully studied the effects produced by the light on the pieces which they themselves have created, choosing those which prove ideal in terms of composition and volume.

Pieces that take on a new function, or lamps that take on a new life. Whichever way you look at it, the new Lladró proposal is spot on under any light. The brand keeps on surprising us, add-ing to its chandeliers, hanging and wall lamps, other original and exclusive designs to the highest standards of excellence.

The brand’s president spoke to major Mexican collectors who attended the signing event.

ROSA LL ADRó traveled to three dif ferent continents this fall to introduce the new High Porcelain creations. In September, she visited India to present Goddess Lakshmi, one of the most recent additions to the collection, for the very first time in the country. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual. The events took place in the cities of Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. During her tour, Lladró’s president told the press that "India is a truly incredible and diverse country, with an unbelievable heritage that inspired us to create this sculpture, which is deeply rooted in its traditions."At the beginning of November, Rosa Lladró flew to Mexico City to present the new pieces in the brand’s maximum artistic category in an exhibition held at the luxury W hotel, in collaboration with the Liverpool department stores. The first signing event with a member of the family held in Mexico City aroused a lot of expectation among the media and attracted many of the brand’s collectors who were delighted to have a chance to take away their favorite piece with a very special signature. At the end of the same month, Rosa Lladró traveled to the UK to present Winged beauty, the latest addition to the High Porcelain collection. MADISON 500 opened its doors in December. Its bright, white and modern façade proved the perfect prelude for what was on show inside. With a refreshing, attractive style, the new Lladró Boutique in New York, in the heart of Manhattan, provides the ideal canvas to showcase the brand’s new creative lines.

The preview was held on December 3rd, with a special event for designers organized in conjunction with Traditional Home Magazine. Rosa Lladró, Jaime Hayon, Designer of the boutique, Tori Mellot, Senior Style Editor of the magazine, and members of the creative team at The City of Porcelain acted as co-hosts during a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The many guests,

mostly celebrated interior designers, were treated to a delightful soiree with music by the famous DJ Silvia Prada, and a cocktail reception with Spanish wine. Widely reported in the media, the event ended with a fun nighttime trip around the city in pedicabs.

The opening of the boutique to the general public also ushered in a series of exciting events, including one called Madison’s Speakeasy, in reference to the Big Apple’s fashionable hideaway bars. The latest cocktail mixology and a jazz band helped to recreate the atmosphere of an authentic 1920s New York speakeasy. Guests joined in the fun by wearing paper mustaches, while a caricaturist was on hand for whoever

wished to pose, drawing portraits to take home as a reminder of an unforgettable evening. Another event held at the boutique was An Evening of Wine and Roses with Spanish wine and an assortment of exquisite tapas inspired by the flowers in Lladró creations, served on the brand’s original pieces for l’art de la table.

As well as Lladró's new f lagship store in Manhattan, the brand also opened a showroom in the New York Merchandise Mart building, at 41 Madison Avenue, last October to coincide with the Tabletop Market Show. This building is a showcase for products from the world's most prestigious brands and the major trade facility for the l'art de la table sector in New York.

LAST FALL Rosa Lladró acted as host at two magnificent events in Russia with a special spotlight on artistic vanguard porcelain. St Petersburg was the latest stop on the touring exhibition of the brand’s ballet pieces which, after its stint at the Bolshoi in Moscow, went on display last November in the splendid Mihaylovsky Theater. After a wonderful perfor-mance of Laurencia, inspired by the Spanish classic Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega, Rosa Lladró visited the exhibition in the company of over 120 guests, including celebrities, artists, politicians and members of the press. During

the closing act for the exhibition, the brand’s president presented the theater’s Director, Vladimir Kejman, with the High Porcelain sculp-ture Oriental horse, and the principal dancers Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, with a special edition of the piece The spirit of dance. Also in November, the most vanguard side of Lladró went on show in Moscow’s glamor-ous Petrovsky Passage, home to the Lladró Boutique. The store hosted a retrospective exhibition of a selection of the brand’s most innovative pieces from the 1950s up until the present. The opening, attended by Rosa Lladró,

brought together the crème de la crème of Moscow high society. Among the many well-known faces were the Spanish Ambassador in Russia, José Ignacio Carvajal, in the company of his wife; the actresses Natalia Selezneva, Natalia Lesnikovky, Marina Berseneva and Anastasiya Makeeva and her husband, Gleb Matveychuk; as well as the singer Nadezhda Babkina and the TV presenter Larissa Verbitskaya. THE GUEST by Lladró Atelier, one of Lladró’s most groundbreak ing col lec t ions , was presented in October at the Isetan Shinjuku department stores during DesignTide Tokyo, the city’s annual design week. Presenting the latest tendencies in design, this must-visit event provided a wonderful opportunity to view the unique pieces in The Guest, the result of collaboration between the brand and internationally prestigious external creators. In fact, one of the big attractions of the event for design lovers was the chance to personally meet the celebrated artist Shinichiro Kintai, a member of the Japanese studio Devilrobots which designed two pieces in The Guest collection.

Also in Tokyo, last November, Lladró took part at the annual party held in the Spanish Embassy. The act was hosted by the Spanish Ambassador, Miguel Ángel Navarro, accompanied by other diplomats and directors from the Cervantes Institute. The Lladró sculptor Marco Antonio Noguerón added an artistic note to the event with a special modeling demonstration to a select group of guests. The party had a strong Spanish flavor as an advance taste for a year of celebrations because, apart from Lladró’s 60th anniversary, 2013 also marks the commemoration of 400 years of relations between Japan and Spain, with a program of cultural activities which will include a notable presence of the brand.

ASIA, OCEANIA, AMERICA, EuROPE… the art of Lladró sculptors knows no boundaries. Once again, the artists from The City of Porcelain have traveled to many countries around the world to demonstrate how a Lladró work is brought to life. The first to set off this fall was Javier Malavia, who visited the Philippines, New Zealand and Hong Kong in November in a series of events well attended by lovers of the brand. The tour kicked off in Manila, with special guests like the Spanish Ambassador in the Philippines and some of the country’s top showbiz celebrities. From there, Malavia flew to Hong Kong where the public were anxiously awaiting to see him model for the first time. Afterwards, it was the turn of Lladró fans in New Zealand to view the birth of his piece Celestial balcony at events held

in Ashburton, Auckland and Hamilton. At the same time, Marco Noguerón visited Japan on a tour that took him to Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo and Kumamoto. His trip to the country coincided with the traditional Christmas event held at the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo which counted on the presence of Lladró. A select group of guests had a chance to see Marco modeling an exquisite scene from his piece Daydreaming by the pond. His demonstration of art made him an outstanding ambassador for the brand.Meanwhile, toward the end of November Juan Ignacio Aliena toured Mexico and the Caribbean islands Aruba, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Maarten. As always, the Mexican public received him with open arms, while the recently opened Lladró boutique in Aruba saw many emotive moments

as the sculptor brought his piece Our Lady of Divine Providence to life. One of the most special tours this fall was with the sculptor Eva Cuerva, who gave live modeling demonstrations of creations from NAO’s Disney collection at Downtown Disney, the leisure and shopping center located near the park in Orlando. The artist was applauded by true Disney fans who were delighted to take home their favorite Disney characters in porcelain. In fact, she returned with many new ideas for upcoming figurines in the collection. The final tour of the year was with Raúl Rubio, who traveled to Ireland in December for what was the brand’s first sculptor event in the country. During a crowded demo in Dublin the artist chatted about his work with a very young audience until well into the night.

Many people tried their hand at modeling their own porcelain flower with the help of the artist at events also featuring live music, lots of well-known faces and many members of the press.Besides these events we also had the less common demonstrations of vase painting, an artistic task that requires the skills of the best artists at The City of Porcelain. With a steady hand, Amparo Martínez in Singapore, Paquita Sanjuán in Sri Lanka and Raquel Duque in Istanbul meticulously decorated vases at events that delighted the crowds in attendance.

"if you Like poRceLAin, then the trip is well worth the visit. Every-body had a really great time." This was how one of the members of the group of US collectors who visited us recently summed up the experience of visiting The City of Porcelain. Coming from Naval Station Rota (Cadiz), the group was welcomed by Rosa Lladró and treated to a complete tour of the workshop where all our pieces are created, as well as a visit to the Lladró Museum and to the house where the three founding brothers were born, located in the nearby town of Almàssera.

THE CITY OF PORCELAIN was the chosen setting for the signing last October 15th of the agreement with the San Pío V Museum of Fine Arts, one of Spain’s foremost art galleries. The act was attended by Lola Johnson, the Regional Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Valencian Community; Rafael Ripoll, Regional Secretary of Culture; Paz Olmos, Direc-tor of San Pío V and Rosa Lladró, President of Lladró. The agreement between the two museums endorses a mutual commitment to the promotion and diffusion of the cultural heritage of Valencia. The collaboration envisages a cycle of exchanges which gets off to a start with the Lladró Museum’s loan of Patio in El Cabañal by Sorolla. Likewise, the Museum of Fine Arts is reciprocating with El Alambique by Equipo Crónica, one of the most outstanding artist collectives in Valencia in the twentieth century. The San Pío V Museum of Fine Arts is an internationally recognized museum with a unique collection of Gothic paintings on board from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, as well as masterpieces like Velázquez’s Self-portrait.

DANCERS FROM THE NILE

dancers from the nile(golden re-deco)[51 x 32 cm, 20" x 12 1/2"] Ref. 01008591Limited edition of500 pieces

Some workS are able to arouse feel-ings that go much beyond mere con-templation. And this happens when we observe Dancers from the Nile. We imagine that we are listening to the enchanting sound of the arghoul, a tra-ditional Egyptian double-pipe wood-wind instrument, and we can almost convince ourselves that we are seeing the swaying movement of the dancers… This is the magic of the Orient, arriving to us in the form of one of Lladró Gold Club’s most spectacular pieces.

The new limited edition, available as a premiere piece for club members, combines the formal elegance of clas-sical sculpture, painstakingly modeled in white, with the exuberant decora-tion in golden luster. This complex tech-nique, requiring the input of Lladró’s most experienced artists, enhances several key elements from Egyptian symbolism. The crowns, bracelets, neck-laces, anklets, borders and sumptuous clothing lend the piece the touch of sophistication that conjures up the splendor of ancient Egypt.

Dancers from the Nile is sure to become one of the most emblematic pieces in Lladró’s most exclusive collection. This limited edition is already available for Lladró Gold Club members at a special price. If you still haven’t joined, dis-cover all the benefits of membership on www.lladrogold.com.
