THE Credit Amnesty of 2014 gives theSouth African consumer yet another chanceto start on a new slate and join the econom-ic mainstream.

This goal is achieved by clearing orremoving default listings from the consum-er’s credit bureau profile.

However, it is emphasised that only thepaid-up default listing and paid-up judge-ment listings will be removed.

Yes, of course the other miscellaneousnotations like bad payer, slow payer, etcetera will be removed.

First, you have to know that presentlythere are four major credit bureaus operat-ing in South Africa.

With “major” it means that these creditbureaus are used by major credit providerslike banks, retail stores, motor finance andmortgage or housing finance institutions toassess your application for credit orfinance.

Each credit bureau holds information thatis not entirely the same as the other creditbureau because they receive informationfrom different credit providers.

These credit bureaus are the holders ofthe information that is targeted to beremoved through the credit amnesty bill.

Therefore, it goes without saying that ifyou are to stand up and say you have aclean credit record, all listings on all majorcredit bureaus must be updated andcleared.

What you hear is that all the aforemen-tioned negative information will be “auto-matically removed” from your credit record.

What you do not hear is that you have tobe involved or initiate some action toensure that your credit profile benefitsfully.) IT seems as if the career pathless travelled in South Africa isthat of the tech start-up CEOwho can pilot a company todazzling paydays, sell it and do itall over again in a next venture:The mythical creature known asthe South African serial CEO.Israel claims to have more

serial entrepreneurs per capitathan any other country in theworld. You certainly also findthem in America, the UK andSweden, where there are vibrantstart-up cultures. They create success and action

and have the impact that amazesand influences other people, leaving behind a trail of profita-ble companies. But where are they in South

Africa?

South Africa’s big shotsOne of the most celebrated

serial start-up CEOs is ElonMusk, a South African-bornsuperstar in Silicon Valley. Hisfirst company, Zip2’s successfulsale to Compaq was followed byX.com that became PayPal andwas sold to eBay for $1,5 billion.Musk pocketed a modest

$165 million from this transactionalone.Musk is currently occupied by

his ventures, SpaceX and Tesla. He has also recently launchedSolarCity and is exploring theHyperloop concept for commer-cial purposes. He joins the ranks of South

Africans like Willem van Biljon, who started Mosaic Software, sold it, then built Amazon.com’sElastic Compute Cloud (EC2),sold it and started Nimbula, sold

it and is now the CEO ofTakealot.com that raised justover R1 billion for expansion inthe past few weeks. We can also talk about Vinny

Lingham, Pieter de Villiers, andmany others alike. At their December 2013

Executive of the Year awards, the Silicon Valley BusinessJournal commented on four oftheir top five winners in asurprising manner: “Here’ssomething interesting about ourexecutive of the year awards, something that hadn’t occurredto us at the time that these fourexecutives were selected – theyare all originally from SouthAfrica.”The event boasts competition

from the likes of Google founder,Larry Page.

Still a long way to goSo, we know that South

Africans can do it and that theyare somewhere out there doingit. But South Africa is still veryfar from the booming start-upactivity observed in universitytowns like Cambridge, Leuven,Boston and, of course, the SiliconValley region. These areas have become the

innovation capitals of the world, with companies spinning out ofuniversities into a whirlpool ofcollaboration between academia, industry and government. Ahighly-developed ecosystem fortechnology transfer springs fromthis interaction that seesinvestors, multi-national compa-nies and entrepreneurs fromoutside the university flocking tothe area.

As a result, business incuba-tors, accelerators, science parks, jobs, acquisitions and all theother elements of a successfulentrepreneurial ecosystemnaturally arise. Within thiswonderful mixture of activityyou’ll find a pool of brilliantCEOs who want to do it over andover again. Bring the challengeand they will do the rest. Our local universities have

been producing world-classtechnologies for years, but only afew of these innovations havespawned new companies. Onecan ponder for hours on themany reasons for this, but it iscertain that a key ingredient isour missing South African serialCEO.

The thrill of taking risksWe know they are out there

and that some of them thriveabroad. From time to time weeven observe a few of them onhome ground, but they are fewand far between. Are South Africans, like many

central European nations, ingeneral too conservative to giveup the security of a comfycorporate job in favour of theadrenaline roller-coaster ride ofstarting a company? When I wasa student, the self-acclaimed“entrepreneurs” among us wereviewed with pity – the poor guys

who couldn’t land the big bankjob and had to tinker away inMother’s garage to make endsmeet. It was certainly nothing to

aspire to. Self-employment – howdreadful! The current chairper-son of a large financial institu-tion once scolded Bishops boyand UCT alumnus Mark Shuttle-worth telling him: “Your parentspaid dearly for a good educationand look what you are doing! You should be grateful towardsthem and get a proper job.” Weall know the end of that story.Perhaps our fear of failure

overrides our adventurous side. Our society seems to be highlyunforgiving toward failures andthe “tarnished” individualsinvolved with it. In the UnitedStates, failure means excellentexperience and is a badge ofhonour on a CV.Whatever the reason, the

bottom line is that entrepreneur-ship is still not aspirational inthe South African culture.

We have the potentialWe have four universities

within an hour’s drive from eachother in the Western Cape. Thereis no reason why we cannotestablish the region as a world-class innovation capital. In orderto rocket the Western Cape tothe levels of some innovationcapitals abroad, we will need toget our serial CEOs out of theirhiding places and offer themopportunities to do their magic. The recent announcement of

the appointment of Lindiwe Zuluas minister of Small BusinessDevelopment is perhaps a very

good step in the right direction, but we need much more than aseat in cabinet to take us to thenext level. I doubt that theminister alone will uncover theserial CEOs in hiding. We haveto help.Stellenbosch University,

through its innovation entity,Innovus, recently took the leadand established the LaunchLab, amixed-use business incubatorthat is open to any entrepreneur. At the same time, the universi-

ty is spinning out four newcompanies, but we can do muchmore. We need those serial CEOs.

There are awesome opportunitieson our tables, but we find itdifficult to marry these with theright CEOs.Entrepreneurial CEOs are

needed to raise funding for andrun our companies, or mentorand raise our young and inexpe-rienced CEOs to become theserial CEOs.So, Minister Zulu, colleagues

and friends, let’s embark on anEaster egg hunt to find thosemythical creatures and startworking towards becoming theInnovation Capital of Africa.

) In a “tenderpreneur”-ob-sessed country such as ours, young people have to beinspired to dream biggerrather than who can connectyou to government tenders.– Ed.) Anita Nel is CEO of Innovus, the wholly-owned university-industry interaction andinnovation company of Stellen-bosch University.

THE Nedbank Ke Yona team search forSouth Africa’s prospective future footballheroes has climaxed with about 30 playersadvancing to the preparation camp. The chosen 30 players were part of the 48

selected during a nationwide talent search. The group of 30 was selected after undergo-ing intense training at the High-Perform-ance Centre at the University of Pretoria aweek ago. They were put through toughdrills that tested their football qualities. The training camp at the high-performanceinstitute was utilised to reduce the squad to30 players which will eventually betrimmed to the final 18-man squad to form

the 2014 Nedbank Ke Yona team to face thisyear’s Nedbank Cup champions, OrlandoPirates. The three-day boot camp gave the players

a feel of professional football as the High-Performance Centre gave the boys access toworld-class facilities such as state-of-the-artgym equipment, medical and sports nutri-tion sessions and a financial fitness sessionfrom the sponsor to equip the boys inmaking sound financial decisions.Owen da Gama, one of the team’s

coaches, emphasised that the aim of thecamp was not to trim down these players tothe final squad, but to also share impera-

experience for these players. For some, thismay be the one and only time that they getto train in such world-class facilities underthe auspices of well-established coacheswho have seen and done it all in football. As coaches, we aim on sharing as much ofour football knowledge as possible andbelieve that they will come out of this bootcamp as not just improved footballers, buteven better role models in their societies,”said Da Gama.“Playing against a side like Orlando

THE most important thingin life is understanding.Understanding is moreimportant than knowledge; itis more important thanwisdom even though wisdomis supreme. What is understanding?

Understanding is an assimi-lation of correct ideas. It isalso comprehension of truth.I see misunderstanding asthe greatest tragedy in life. When misunderstanding isunderstanding to you, thenyou will live your life onwhat you think you’veunderstood and in the truesense of the word, misunder-stood.That is called error and

nothing is more dangerousthan zealous error. With thisI mean mistakes supportedby keenness and enthusiasm.Truth leads to freedom:

John 8:32 defines truth asoriginal information. Inother words, truth is gettingback to the original informa-tion about something. Theonly person or source thathas original information onany product, is the manufac-

turer.Take note that for many

JONAS MASOTLA is the manbehind the gospel albumentitled Emmanuel. The album was produced by

the artist’s friend and now theexecutive producer of thealbum, Xolani Xoli Thabethe.Emmanuel was recorded in

front of a live audience at thePretoria State Theatre.Apart from being a good

gospel artist, Masotla is also anpolice officer as well as a policechaplain.Emmanuel is Masotla’s first

album and features tracks withtitles such as Thixo, He isPower, Inkweru and Ampitsa.Track four, Thixo, is my

favourite because it reminds meof my younger days of going tochurch on a Sunday andsinging hymns. The album has 17 tracks and

Masotla performs along with alive band and back-up singers.Masotla first discovered his

true love for music in the late1980s when he started conduct-ing the police choir.Three decades later the police

chaplain took all that he hadlearned and crafted from hischoir and recorded his debut

album.There is not really much

about this album that standsout for me or that would makeme rush to the stores to get it.If you haven’t been to church

in a while and you miss allthose old church hymns, thenthis album is definitely for you.Emmanuel is available at

most music stores.) Album review by TshenoloMeruti.

THE DA in the Free State condemnsthe violence and destruction of propertywhich took place during a protest at theBartimea School for the Deaf and Blind inThaba Nchu last week.To voice their frustration, learners

threw stones at the police and set fire tothe administration block. This after ameeting with department officials whichdid not sufficiently address their griev-

ances. Among their demands were to haveteachers proficient in Sign Language, proper meals, structured after-schoolactivities and a new principal. This is taking place during a crucial

time when students are preparing orsitting for their mid-year examinationsand the violence puts learners withdisabilities in a dangerous position assome of them are blind and deaf. The party urges the Free State Educa-

their third try, courtesy of LehlohonoloMajoro’s first half goal. The Buccaneers won the first two

editions of the competition – both onpenalties.“My champion moment was when Bobby

Motaung, the manager of Kaizer Chiefs, handed the team over to me. The playersstarted addressing me as coach and thatmeant a lot to me,” Letube said.“I’ll never forget the mood in the

changing rooms. I had never experiencedanything like it before. The players weredancing and singing like warriors readyfor war. They were truly motivated, and itwas no surprise we won on the day,” hesaid. His counterpart, Mfati, echoed his

sentiments, but said he had had butterfliesin his stomach when he had been intro-duced to the Pirates players.“When I was first introduced to the

team, I was nervous, it took me about 60seconds to find my feet and eventually Iuttered my first words; greeting them.“I was also caught off-guard a couple of

times addressing them in vernacular, forgetting that some of the players did notunderstand my home language,” Mfatisaid. The Buccaneer said he would not trade

his experience for anything as he had abetter knowledge of football now.“Walking out of the iconic FNB Stadium

tunnel and seeing thousands of Bucs fansin black and white cheering for us sentshivers down my spine.“The best moment was when I had to

tell Daine Klate to go warm up, and whenwe discussed technical changes at the sideline prior to his substitution. I am glad Ihad the opportunity,” he said. The Be the Champion Coach campaign

provides fans a once in a lifetime opportu-nity to experience what it feels like to be acoach on match-day, when the Sowetogiants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Piratesbattle it out for the title.
