It’s my first love, and a program with which I am extraordinarily familiar. I mostly use it for designs meant for the web (RGB) format. Illustrator: I picked Illustrator up during my first year of grad school in 2012. This is my go-to tool for making vector-based graphics for anything needing to be printed or scaled to varying sizes. InDesign: I use InDesign to design and layout projects such as newsletters, resumes, brochures (like this one) and some promotional materials like t-shirts, pins, gift tags and mousepads. Xd: I use this as a digital sketchpad and to design and prototype mobile apps, the layout and UI/UX of websites, wireframes and digital mockups. Lightroom: The newest arrow in my quiver. I use this as an extension of Photoshop and to streamline large projects. For example: I’m currently working on a large photo mosaic.

I’ve acquired many technical skills through my education and experience. More importantly though, I have the soft skills required to reach an audience and engage with them. Empathy, intuition and insight are among my most valuable abilities. Knowing who the audience is, and how to frame your message is, in my opinion, even more important than the hard skills. Indifference to your audience, or failing to know what makes them tick, can cause your message to fall flat.
