NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY Artistic Director, Choir in Residence Responsible to: Deputy Director, with close liaison with the Music Co-ordinator. Main duties: To form a Gallery choir, this could be an existing choir or made up of individuals from different choirs. To work closely with the Friday Night Music Co-ordinator to schedule in the performances alongside our existing Friday Night Music programme. To develop and manage a three year programme of choral performances at the National Portrait Gallery. To liaise, where appropriate, with rehearsal venues, manage choir rehearsals throughout the year, and devise rehearsal schedules. To present a minimum of six choral concerts per year using the Gallery displays, exhibitions and the Collection as inspiration. This will include performing at the Gallery’s regular free Friday Evening Music event. To work closely with staff across all departments including the Director, Curators, Learning team, Communications and Development, the Archive and the Youth Forum to identify source material for the choral performances. Work with opera companies, for example ENO, Opera Holland Park and English Touring Opera to create music and stories around the Collection, particularly with young people, presenting an opportunity to engage them with two art forms. To explore opportunities to work with the Gallery’s current outreach partners such as the Hospital Schools, and also our Youth Forum. To work closely with the Gallery’s Director, Deputy Director and Friday Night Music Co-ordinator to identify young composers with a background in choral composition to undertake two new commissions per year.

NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

Artistic Director, Choir in Residence

Responsible to: Deputy Director, with close liaison with the Music Co-ordinator.

Main duties:

To form a Gallery choir, this could be an existing choir or made up of individuals from different choirs.

Person Specification

Experience

Have experience of creative artistic planning for a festival or concert series.

Be an accomplished musical performer, conductor of a choir/orchestra.

Have experience of working with young people.

Skills and Attributes

The ability to work with a wide range of people both at the Gallery and externally.

Have the ability to form a musical programme taking inspiration from all aspects of the Gallery’s Collection and exhibition programme.

Have strong leadership skills and have the ability to lead a choir with technical expertise and flair.

Experience of working with a range of choirs &/or musicians.

Experience of planning and managing a budget.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Excellent organisational skills.

Good working knowledge of IT programmes, including Word, Outlook and Excel, as well as database experience, ideally Raiser’s Edge.

Able to work flexibly and under pressure.

Other

Performances will be held on a Friday evening therefore the post holder will be required to work on evenings when performances are held.

The post holder will be required to travel with the Choir in Residence to regional partner venues at least once a year.

Artistic Director, Choir in Residence

Details of the post are given below and in the job description. You should take care to show in your application how you can fulfil the requirements of the job.

Term of appointment:This post is for a fixed period of three years.

HourYour contracted hours of work are 8 gross (1 day a week, or equivalent hours) per week including a lunch break of one hour for a full day worked.

Pay The salary for this post will be £7,500 per annum, (pro-rata £37,502 per annum).

Annual LeaveThe annual leave allowance for this post is pro-rata 25 days per annum.

Place of WorkMost of the work is based in the Gallery at St Martin’s Place, but all staff are required to work at other locations if necessary.
