ANGLO NUBIAN GOAT

Type Meat and Milk

Origin Nubia in NE Africa

Distribution Imported in to England where breeders used the bucks to cross breed with their domestic does to introduced some of

the characteristics of the Nubian they found desirable. By 1895 the Anglo- Nubian breed had been developed from

these cross breeding efforts.

Characteristics Goat has an “Aristocratic” appearance

Color Red Black and Tan are the most common colors

Head Convex between the muzzle and the eyes

Eyes Medium Sized, set obliquely apart, almond shape

Ear Long, wide and pendulous. Set low on the head, wide and open. Longer than the nose.

Mouth The teeth meet the hard pad of the upper jaw.

Nose Roman

Neck Long and fine, without tassels.

Horn If honed, should be set wide apart and sweep backwards without any outward curve.

Coat Short and fine without long hair

Udder Spherical, attached to the body over a wide area, highly silky not fleshly.

Milk Duct Large and prominent

Milk Production 4 to 5 kg per day and 1040 to 1250 kg per annual lactation

SAANEN GOAT

Type Milk ( heavy milk producers )

Origin Saanen Valley in the South of Canton Berne, Switzerland.

Distribution In 1893 spread throughout the Europe. Between 1904 to1930 the Saanen wear imported into United States

Characteristics Queen of the Dairy Goats

Color Pure white to cream colored

Head Usually lightly structure

Ear Erect and alertly carried preferably pointing forward

Mouth Straight or dished

Nose There may some black spot on nose

Neck Long, slim of good depth and connect evenly with withers and shoulders

Horn May or may not be present at birth

Coat Short fine coat

Udder Well-developed not fleshy and have a collapsed appearance and soft texture after milking. Good udder attachment.

Milk Fat 3 to 4 %

Milk Production 3.8 lit. milk / day

TOGGENBURG GOAT

Origin Toggenburg Valley in Switzerland

Distribution United States kingdom and US. By the middle of 2002 Toggenburg has been registered with New Zealand Dairy

Goat Breeder association.

Characteristics Swiss Marked Pattern

Color Light fawn to dark burgundy or chocolate

Head Head medium length, facial line straight

Eyes Set well apart, full and bright

Ear Erect and pointing slightly forward. Distinct white marks on ear

Mouth/ Face Straight or dished, white stripes on face. Facial structure is long but not Roman Nose

Muzzle Broad and strong but without coarseness.

Neck Does long and fine but not to slender , bucks fine and strong but not coarse

Horn Polled or neatly disbudded

Udder Carrying well up the back and broadly attached. Skin color fawn to dark brown and softly textured.

ALPINE GOAT

Characteristics Very grace full and only goat breed which has upright ears.

Color White, Brown, Black and various mixed colors.

Ear Medium or Short upright ears.

Neck White Neck, Clear neck, Black Neck, Sundgau (Black with white marking), Pied (spotted and molted),

Coat Short haired

Udder Large, well-shaped with well-placed teats.

Milk Production 4 to 5 liter per day, Alpine goat milk contain highly vita A, B, C, D and K. Milk is mostly used for production of

butter, cheese, ice cream and many other products.

Weight Female: 135 pounds, and Male: 170 pounds

Height Female: 30 inches and Male: 34 to 40 inches

DAMASCUS GOAT

Origin Also known as Shami, is a native breed of Syria and other near East Countries.

Distribution It was imported in to Cyprus to upgrade the local Cypriot goat population.

Characteristics Brown head/ white body combination

Color It is possible for Boer to be completely brown or white.

Fore head Prominent and form an even curve linking the nose and horn.

Eyes Brown eyes

Ear Smooth of medium length and hang downward

Neck Neck moderate length and in proportion with body length

Forequarters Full well fleshed, limb well jointed and smoothly blended. The chest broad, Leg strong, well placed and proportion with

the depth of body.

Horn Strong, of moderate length, positioned well apart and have a gradual backward curve before turning outward

symmetrically.

Body Boldly three dimensional long, deep, and wide. Rib well sprung. Loin well muscles, wide and long. The top line straight

and strong, shoulder rounded with an abundance of muscles from shoulder through hip.

Weight The mature ram: 110 to 135 kg, and does: 90 to 100 kg.

Record

Daily weight gain: 200 gm per day, Kidding rate : 200%, Puberty: 6 month for male and 10 to 12 month for females,

kidding: 3 kidding in two years.
