Challenges in goat farming in india - Goat Farming Consultancy
Transcript of Challenges in goat farming in india - Goat Farming Consultancy
• India is first in goat population in the world with approx. 160 million goats
• Providing supplementary income to nearly 70 million farmers of over
5,00,000 remote villages
• Goat meat production in the country has increased from 0.47 to 0.59
million tons during the last decade (2002 to 2011) with an annual
growth rate of 2.4%.
• Goat milk production in the country has also increased from 3.6 to 4.7 million tons during the same period with an annual growth rate of 2.6 %.
• The country stands first in goat milk production and is the second largest
in goat meat in the world by sharing 29% & 12% production, respectively.
The goat sector contributes 8.4 % to the India’s
livestock GDP i.e. 38,590 crores through meat (Rs.
22,625 crores), milk (Rs. 9,564 crores), skin (Rs.
1491crores), manure (Rs. 1,535 crores) and others
Rs 3,360 crores.
Goat contributes approx. Rs 40,000
crores to Indian Economy
Technical Challenges
• Unavailability of high genetic potential breed
• Absence of high productive exotic breed for cross breeding
• Lack of scientific feeding practices
• Health challenges like PPR, CCPP and Haemoncosis
• High kid mortality
• Poor feeding of goat kids
Commercial Challenges • Lack of organized market • Absence of state of art goat
farms • No specialized feed units • Lack of properly vaccinated
goat stock to start new farm • Lack of commercial value chain
of goat meat • Lack of proper scientific
information regarding commercial goat farm establishment

• Poor housing and habitat is primary constraint in failure of commercial goat
farms.
• Traditional high floor housing system restricts farmers to keep large
flocks of goats
Need of proper scientific housing for goats is necessary to run profitable
goat farms.
Use of latest management equipment to control environment in kennel
type tropical housing for goats become essential
• In spite India is land of genetic diversity even than no genetic improvement
in goats have been take place since last 60 years.
• Even we have lost our credential breeds like pure Jamunapari and beetal in
their breeding tracts.
• Non descriptive breeding constitute nearly 80% of the total animals in the
field
• No herd book is maintained to keep standard breed records of goats
• No registered breeding society is present yet
• Gap between research scientists and stake holders is large
Therefore any entrepreneur who want to run commercial
goat farms need to start it from scratch.
Excessive cross border regulation in live animal trade in India causes
very difficulty to entrepreneurs in bringing good genetic stuff from
Australia or South Africa.
It is already evident that cross breeding with Boer or Shami or Sanen will not only improve growth characters but also milking ability of goats
which ultimately translated into high value meat of kids and also useful
to marginal farmers.
• Although feeding standards are
available to feed goats at various
stages of production but they are
grossly ignored and hence
farmers and entrepreneurs suffers huge production losses.
• Properly formulated feed is
necessary to keep goat healthy
and efficient meat production.
Customized feed additives formulation are
necessary to run profitable meat goat program
Most of the goat farmers are least concerned about health of their animals
which lead to huge losses in the farms.
These are some of the major diseases which can be prevented through various precautionary measures but the Irony is that they remain undiagnosed & close the farms
Kids which are main profits of the goat farms are remained ignored
50% & 70% of the total mortality will be occur in 1st week and 1st month of
the kids’ life respectively. It means that there would 50% chances that kid die
in 1st week.
Pneumonia and Diarrhea are main causes of the deaths, these are not diseases but MANAGEMENTAL PROBLEMS
This mortality can be prevented through improve management practices and available medicine’s administration .
Customized practices and medicinal formulations are available for farmers to
keep meat kids fit and healthy.
Our personal experience (& it is also scientifically proved) tells that extra antioxidant administration to goats in last month of pregnancy improves kids survival rates provided that kid have sufficient colostrum at birth.
Poor feeding in pregnancy leads to lower birth weight of kids which ultimately leads to low growth rates and poor profits
Goat exhaust high amount of energy, water, calcium and electrolytes from the body – these causes calcium and carbohydrate crisis in goats and ultimately lower amount and poor quality of colostrum and subsequent milking.
In India kids are left with goats and no special care is provided to kids It must be keep in mind that in Indian goats are not efficient milk producers and never support the growth potential of kids. In such conditions high energy kids starter and milk replacers are required These milk replacers are needed to give from 7th day after birth up to 10 – 12kg weight attainment. Phase medicated milk replacers are easy to formulate and administer to kids
In phase medicated milk
replacers many of the diseases
like coccidiosis, salmonellosis,
E.coli, pasteurellosis, entero
toxemia and haemonchosis
would be prevented besides
providing energy, protein &
vitamin for growth.
• Farmers keep kids with the goats which causes managment problems in goats
• Goats with kids will come late into the heat and breeding would be delayed
• It is recommended that under proper veterinary / consultant supervision kids should be weaned on 7th day after birth
