Evaluate the Connections Comfort & Sensory Perception How do you feel as you travel (exposed/vulnerable, sheltered/safe). Why? I feel safe on most streets, but I feel vulnerable on Meridian. It is difficult because it is not clear to the cars that they should expect bicycles on Meridian and cars do not know where (on the road) to expect the bicycles to ride. I feel especially vulnerable near Haggan because there are a lot of cars moving around in unexpected ways. I feel very unsafe in the Haggen parking lot because are so many cars moving in so many different unpredictable directions. As a result, I tend to avoid going to Haggens. Parking lots tend to invite cars, but scare bicycles away. What do you see, hear, feel and smell? Near Broadway Park and in residential areas I often hear children playing. What do you enjoy most about your journey? Broadway has a nice bike lane and some areas, such as near Broadway Park, with little cars, and more pedestrians. I enjoy seeing the pedestrians and children that feel safe to be out and about.
Access & Linkages Can you easily find your way to your destination? What makes it easy/ difficult? It is difficult to ride on Meridian because there are a lot of cars and no clear space for bicyclists. I feel unsafe in the Haggens parking lot because the cars are unpredictable. It is easy to ride on Broadway and residential streets because there are few cars and a clear lane for bicycles on Broadway. How do you feel crossing the streets? It is difficult to cross Meridian. There are a lot of cars and some go too fast. I worry about children crossing. Other streets are fine. Are sidewalks present or absent along your route? Present
Identify Opportunities List three things that would improve your journey that could be done right away that wouldn't cost a lot:
1. Put a cross walk (signs and paint) across Meridian and Elm to connect Columbia Elementary School with the Cornwall neighborhood. Part of the Cornwall neighborhood, including my house, is in the Columbia Elementary School district and there are no buses to our neighborhood. Currently, Meridian and Elm Street are too dangerous for elementary school children to cross. Other ideas for children's safety are welcome. A crossing guard would be nice, but may not be cheap.
2. Make sure that no new parking lots are ever installed. 3. Paint bike lanes onto Meridian.
What three changes you would make in the long term that would have a big impact? 1. Make sure that no new parking lots are ever installed. 2. Build a pedestrian bridge over Meridian. 3. Replace exiting parking lots with a pervious surface, such as parks or gardens.

I walk the area all of the time, this particular time was down Broadway to Meridian, north on Meridian to Illinois and right into Haggen's going home I walked up W Maryland to Sunset, then along Broadway to the alley between Broadway and North Park Drive.

Subject input for the Fountain District meeting
I won't be able to attend the meeting this evening, and wondered ifl could send my input to you. I'm not in the Fountain District neighborhood, but I hope that awareness will increase that it is possible to protect neighborhoods from unwarranted noISe.
I think the topics of the "soundscape" and urban noise should be raised for discussion. As we all know, there is more to creating what you want than just what is visible, and activities/amenities. It's important when you are a pedestrian to enjoy a moderate sound level and natural sounds like birds and especially conversation. I think a reasonable sound-scape should be discussed and valued, otherwise we are just accepting noise pollution as a given. One part of this topic is featured today in the Seattle Times, the Danny Westneat column. I recommend it, and also the Web site www.nonoise.org.
Thanks for your work and care for our community.
