Australian and New Zealand Mission February 10-22, 2013

Participants:James Scoon –Wyoming Travel and TourismFred Walker -North Dakota Division of TourismMitch Knothe–Idaho Division of TourismDonnie Sexton - Montana Office of Tourism,Maureen Droz – South Dakota TourismBarbara Stafford – Rocky Mountain International

Summary:

Australia:This was our year for a lot of first in Australia:We introduced:• The New RMI website (www.rmi-realamerica.com.au) which was presented to the trade as a “tool”

developed especially for them to assist them in creating trips for their clients. To the media as a site that was developed by a Australian PR leader specifically for the special needs of the media and to consumers as their “go to site’ for info on the Real America. If you haven’t yet seen the site, please take a look.

• The new 5 State Real America Guide which was very well received by the Australian travel trade and served as a strong vehicle to promote the new website.

• The new 5 State video presentation which incorporated each of the States’ 1 minute videos in a packaged presentation. We held our own against the major video efforts of California, Las Vegas, New York, Hawaii, Texas and some of the largest corporate attractions in the US. And, in New Zealand when we found that a change had been made that allowed us 11 minutes for our presentation instead of the 6 minutes first announced we were easily prepared with the new 10 minute 5 state video (we also have an 16 minute version for trainings and consumer presentations.

Lots of positive exposure in the travel trade media. We had coverage on:• The new website• The new magazine• Our video presentation in Sydney• The RMI media event in Manley• The States participation at the Expo in AucklandThe States gave multiple group and individual interviews in each market. Barbara did 3 call-in interviews with the e-Travel Blackboard, Karry On and TravMedia.

B2B: Eighteen tour companies were represented and interest in our region was the highest it has ever been. (see leads)

RMI Media/Trade EventThirty three media and trade guests (see list)

Discover America Committee Annual meeting. Barbara met with the executive board and they have agreed that Caroline Davidson will be RMI’s rep on the Board. She will be invited to participate in the committee of her choice. TravelMedia/TravelTrade meetingThe States were offered a “private showing” of the new travel trade and travel media programs contracted by International Pow Wow and BRAND USA. A very unique software platform has been developed for the industry. We were excited to have the opportunity to see exactly what this new kind of Internet site can offer to RMI and our states. It will allow us to have in-depth (historical and current) data on media requesting fam support, very complete info on tour operators and travel agents (include all the US product they currently offer) and perhaps (HOPEFULLY) actual numbers on what the industry is selling in US on a market by market basis. Great stuff! VUSA Expo SydneyOver 550 Travel Agents(List of attendees has been requested)

Also had 4 media stop by to chat with us about our region

AUS13: Neil was in Auckland at a meeting. Heidi came toour RMI event and the B2B in Sydney. She is expecting herfirst child in May and will be on "partial" maternity leave untilnext March. They are hiring a person to substitute for herwhile she is out, and they will probably be asked to stay on asUSA is exploding for them right now and they need alot moreproduct. We didn't have time to see Travis while we were inMelbourne, by he sent his regards and asked Heidi to givehim an update. Barbara gave Heidi and extra copy of the newRMI flashdrive to send him.AUS12: Neil attended the RMI Event in Manley. He is veryhappy with their new "Real America" program (7 newitineraries in their catalog this year) but wants to continue toexpand the effort. He has committed SIX Qantas tickets for afam to our region in September (4 trade and 2 media). Heand Barbara will work to get the right mix.Heidi sat in on one of the two training sessions we did at AW'soffices in Sydney. She also had meetings with us at the B2B.She is very excited about our region. She had planned onattending RMI RU this year, but Andrew (the owner of AW)decided that staff would only attend PowWow once every twoyear and since she was in SF she isn't going this year. Shewill try to make the RU next year, but has decided to comeover to the region on her own time as she doesn't feel that shecan wait another year to see the product. Heidi was thepersonally responsible for developing the 7 itineraries for thisyear's catalog so we would definitely love to get her over here.Barbara continue to follow up. Maureen send her a copy of the Crazy Horse newsletter. Invited to the Media Event, butdid not attend.Travis (Business Development Manager) works with HeidiBullough to develop new products for the Canadian/USAprograms. He is very enthusiastic about the potential for ourregion. After our discussion he said that he was going to startwork on a "photography tour" to our region that he thought would be very popular with Australians. Follow up: Althoughhe took materials from each of the states, please add him toyour newsletter lists and send him any thing that you think would be appropriate and keep in touch with him. AUS13: Nicole said that interest in travel to USA is at ithighest ever. US is now the most popular long hauldestination for Aussies. She said that bout 60% of thetravelors are coming from Western Australia (Perth) as the"CUBs" (Cashed up bogens...a.k.a oil field rednecks) arespending money like crazy on their holidays. According to herthere is nothing to do in Perth, so every few months theCUBs travel to some where for a month or two.AUS12: Nicole said that the energy industry is driving a lot ofthe new policies emerging in the major airlines. They arediscovering gas and oil in a lot of non traditional energysectors and this is filling their business seats. Good for theAUS/NZ travelers as the economy seats prices are starting togo down again, but bad for us as there are no seats availablefor media or trade fam tickets. Follow up: Barbara keep intouch with Nicole. Invited Justine Murphy to the RMI MediaEvent, but she did not attend.AUS10: Met with Tony Burns.
