1. Excellence in a Safe and Caring Learning Environment
Our Vision
Excelsior Primary School is an exciting professional learning community committed to excellence in teaching and learning to support personal growth (academic, creative, physical, social, emotional), active citizenship and lifelong learning for all.
Our Culture and Ethos
We aim to be recognised as a Professional Learning Community that promotes and encourages the meaningful involvement of parents, caregivers and community members in the continued development of the whole child and of our school in the community. We use a range of events and activities to support academic excellence and high achievement in The Arts, Physical Education and Italian.
Our Values and Beliefs
Values are determined by the beliefs that we hold and we express these values in the way we think, feel and act. Staff and students of Excelsior value being part of a multi-cultural school and we believe our rich environment of learning, teaching and assessment opportunities are provided inclusively to all students and staff regardless of age, gender, race and ability in a safe and happy environment.
Our values commitments are integrated from, National Values for Australian Schooling, WA Curriculum Framework and The Excelsior Way with the 4Rs incorporating the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and we use Aussie of the Month as school based programs to support these beliefs.
The Excelsior Way used the 4Rs of Respect, Relationships, Responsibilities and Reach for the Stars to support and encourage students to develop positive attitudes to learning, while demonstrating social and civic responsibility. Successful strategies implemented included: National Values for Australian Schools integrated with Aussie of the Month Award, the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and the Excel Club, Faction tokens, Exemplary Behaviour Letters, Class Book Awards, Graduation Book Awards, Student Leadership programs, the School Volunteers Program and the School Chaplaincy Program.
Our Behaviour Management
The Excelsior Way is the expected standard that promotes safe and respectful behaviours with and between students, staff and parents, and recognises the outstanding achievements of both individuals and groups of students.
Excelsior has a range of positive systems in place to recognise both individuals and groups as indicated in the table below where positive entries (95%) far outweigh negative entries. Students who receive an Orange or Red Card are counselled and supported through a restoring relationships process that leads to healthier interpersonal relations among members of the school community, resulting in more effective and sustained learning.
The Excelsior Way guides the attitudes, behaviours and values of everyone in the Excelsior community, using the 4Rs and the 7 Habits of Happy Kids (Steven Covey) – Be Proactive, Begin With the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win Win, Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood, Synergise, Sharpen the Saw.

2. Excellence in Teaching and Leadership
Teaching Achievement Targets
Classroom observation and feedback models show evidence of the use of instructional tactics and strategies, as part of the explicit teaching model.
Evidence is collected via the Performance Management (PM) three year cycle.
The level of instructional tactics / explicit teaching applied to classroom practice (observations).
Peer Observations is part of the Director General’s Focus 2017 and require teachers to observe and provide feedback to a colleague.
Admin staff conduct a series of Walkthroughs each term, targeting areas of explicit instruction.
Information provided by these observation and feedback models indicate a continued use of a variety of instructional tactics.
Leadership Achievement Targets 1. Staff satisfaction survey data reflects a high degree of satisfaction in all areas – 31 responses. The
survey showed that staff strongly agreed and agreed with the majority of areas, the main differences being about staff support, feedback and community relationships. Positive areas include teacher expectations and students feeling safe, talking to teachers and being at Excelsior.

2. An increased percentage of staff accept leadership roles within the school. The distributed leadership structure at Excelsior encourages staff to experience leadership roles across the school such as Learning Area Leader, special program leaders, Block leaders and other leaders such as school Board, finance, explicit instruction, school improvement, sustainability and ground improvements.
3. Support structures to enable teachers to progress to Senior Teacher and Level 3 Teacher. Staff are coached and supported to make long term plans for their careers. Professional learning through performance management enables this process.
Other support structures include a focus on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, teacher peer observations, the implementation of the Australian Curriculum and collaborative planning for year level and school priorities.

Physical Education
Children were taught fundamental skills and introduced to a wide variety of sports including football, soccer, rugby league tag, hockey, netball, cricket, sof-crosse, volleyball, t-ball, softball, basketball and golf. Visiting sporting personalities from many codes provided students with positive role models and an opportunity to further develop their skills and abilities.
Senior students successfully competed in Interschool Summer and Winter Carnivals. Athletes selected from across the school competed in the Cross Country and Interschool Athletics Carnival, demonstrating good individual spirit and team spirit along with being fair and competitive.
LOTE Italian
The aim of the Italian program at Excelsior is to provide students with the opportunity to explore the Italian language and culture and to practise communicating in Italian. At Excelsior, the aim is always to continue to raise the profile of Italian (additional languages in general) in the school community and build on student achievements and confidence.
English as an Alternative Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
The program provided support for students who were learning English as a second language as well as increasing the community awareness of our cultural diversity to encourage tolerance and understanding. The specialist teacher worked collaboratively with classroom teachers to support the classroom program and included the withdrawal of students in small groups for intensive instruction. The Harmony Day assembly for our students was a highlight and demonstrated and promoted the great variety of cultural heritage that is present at Excelsior.

Parent and Student Surveys
The Parent Survey shows a similar range to the Staff Survey with school strengths being an expectation for the child to do his best, feeling safe, talking to teachers, make good progress and the school being well maintained and recommending the school to others.
Improvement areas could be treating students fairly and parent opinions.
The student survey shows slight different results with strengths being expecting the student to do his/her best, looking for ways to improve, motivation to learn, specialist areas and The Excelsior Way.
Improvement areas could be treating students fairly, maintenance, safety, talking to teachers, student behaviour and student opinions.

Promoting a Sustainable School
Excelsior Primary School is a Waste Wise School that involves students in identifying, planning and implementing strategies to reduce the amount of waste. Students develop responsible environmental behaviours and values through learning experiences that are linked to the Australian Curriculum.
Our school participated in the Clean Up Australia national environmental initiatives in 2017.
28 Solar panels of 8,600 watts provide students with energy research opportunities.
Recycling waste materials – paper, batteries, food scraps, phones – has been a priority with students for a number of years and has successfully reduced our rubbish footprint.
Our worm farms use most of our food waste and turn it into Worm Whiz for $2. The waste sort and audit is always an exciting event for students.
Excellence with School Activities
Student Council Visit to Parliament House
As part of their leadership training, student councillors visited Parliament House, discovering its history and traditions. Visited Upper and Lower houses, had lunch in the Parliamentary Dining Room.
Chaplain Support Program
Our Chaplain contributed to the provision of pastoral care for students and families, providing guidance on human relationships and provided support for students and staff in cases of bereavement, family breakdown and other crisis and loss situations.
Harmony Week
We celebrated our cultural diversity with a special week to raise community awareness about the past, present and future heritage of our children. Children participated at the whole school assembly, dressed in national costumes and ate delicious shared food from around the world - a fantastic lunch.
ANZAC Service
We observe this significant historical event that helped shape our great country and preserve our wonderful lifestyle. With our theme of The Malaysian Conflict, students demonstrated the appropriate level of formality and behaviour throughout the service. Highlights included the Choir performance, the lone piper and past student Jacob playing the trumpet.

Summer & Winter Carnivals, Netball, Cross Country, Girls Footy
Excelsior students participated in t-ball, indoor beach volleyball, basketball and cricket (Summer Carnival) and footy, soccer, hockey and league tag (Winter Carnival). The League Tag team made it to the state finals where they all put in a fantastic effort. Also included were the Interschool Netball Competition and Year 6 girls Footy Gala Day, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
Year 6 Camp
This is a very exciting and rewarding time for students and teachers with everyone thoroughly enjoying their experiences at the Woodman Point Sport and Recreation Adventure Camp. Students (and staff) participated in numerous exciting activities that focused on Challenge by Choice to provide students with specific personal challenges to test their individual achievements, team skills and commitments.
Faction Athletics Carnival and Interschool Carnival
The great variety of individual and team events ensured that all children had an opportunity to shine in their various chosen athletic pursuits, often the ones that they don’t normally play after hours. At the Interschool Athletics Carnival we excelled in individual and team events and achieved a very exciting fourth place. Congratulations to Pegasus for winning the Faction Shield.
100 Days of School
One hundred days of school was celebrated with students rotating through a variety of exciting maths activities to do with 100, eg 100 ideas for a paper bag, 100 day predictions, 100 animals, 100 activities with marbles, blocks, etc. It was an exciting day that promoted Maths as a fun and exciting subject.
Music Performances
The music groups include Senior Choir, percussion, recorder and wind instrument ensemble, rock band and guitar ensemble. These groups of musicians performed with distinction at assemblies, our ANZAC ceremony, Harmony Day and end of year Graduation and Presentation assemblies.
Book Week
Book Week activities included library displays of books, children attending story telling sessions in the library, entering an illustration competition and dressing up as a book character. A very successful Book Fair was held to encouraging students to select their own books.
NUMERO
Excelsior students came runners-up this year after 5 years as area champions. This was an outstanding achievement and a commitment by students and staff to always do their best under any circumstances.
A Celebration of the Arts and Open Day
Students demonstrated their achievements with the choir, recorder ensemble (with wind and brass instruments), percussion group, various class items and the school rock band.
Children’s visual art and class / year level performance art was on display around the school during the day and at night in classrooms, the art room, music room and library. Fantastic framed art work was available for parents to purchase at the Art auction. This idea was well received by the community.
A high level of community attendance supported student performances in music, dance and drama groups, despite the constant threat of rain and the last minute move of the stage indoors.
Book Award Assembly
Excelsior’s thirteenth annual Book Award Assembly celebrated the academic and citizenship leading students with class book prizes. Student entertainment was again to an excellent standard.
Graduation Assembly
Our Year 6 students presented a wonderful dramatic story with music to show their unity and versatility. Their acceptance of individual certificates and of the various special awards, as well as the standard of their performance, showed they have developed into well prepared, confident and enthusiastic global citizens.
Following the assembly, students and families shared morning tea before departing the school for a graduation lunch at the Crown restaurant. It was a very exciting, energetic and satisfying day with all students enjoying the activities, celebrations and notoriety.
