    ness, said the award wastruly an honor, and I amhumbled.

    We have so many thingsgoing for us, and we havea lot of challenges, Loglisaid of the Rockford com-munity. But theres noth-ing, there is no challenge

    in this community thatwe cant overcome just byworking together. And no-bodys going to come rid-ing to our rescue. Its up tous.

    This is the 42nd anni-versary of the Excaliburaward and the 34th forthe Excelsior award. Reg-ister Star Publisher JoshTrust reiterated the signifi-cance of the honors duringthe awards presentation atGiovannis Restaurant &Convention Center, 610 N.Bell School Road.

    This year has been fullof change all over theworld and right here inour own country, Trustsaid. Because of thesechanges, the need is im-mense and the calling forthose who give is strongerthan ever. Those we honorhere tonight are a shining

    example of what it meansto give.

    Logli is well-knownin the Rockford area af-ter serving as Winneba-go County states attorneyand a circuit court judge.He currently serves aspresident and CEO of theUnited Way of Rock RiverValley.

    Childrens Home + AidNorthern Region, found-ed in Rockford in 1939,provides adoption servic-es, child and family coun-seling, early prevention inthe community, foster care,intact family services andyouth services. It also runsMotherHouse Crisis Nurs-ery in Rockford.

    Several attendees atThursdays event said theywere happy to see the Ex-calibur/Excelsior awardsstill being distributed after

    so many years.We wanted to come and

    support and also congratu-late those who have servedthis community well, es-pecially the service proj-ects, also fundraising forunderserved projects, andwere excited to be here,said Herbert Johnson Jr.,senior pastor at RockfordsLiberty Baptist Church.

    The beauty of theseawards is that it exempli-fies all that is good aboutour community, from aspirit of caring to com-munity involvement, saidLinda Niemiec, vice pres-ident of development forCrusader CommunityHealth, which won the Ex-celsior award in 1985.

    North tops Auburnin Scholastic Bowl

    Belvidere North had togo to two tiebreaker roundsto defeat perennial cham-pion Auburn on the open-ing night of the NIC-10

    Scholastic Bowl seasonWednesday.North, which end-

    ed Auburns eight-yearrun of perfection in NIC-10 matches in the NIC-10 championship matchin March, scored a 420-380 victory in the fea-tured opening night match.

    The teams, competingin a round-robin quad atBoylan, ended regulation ina 360-tie, then both scored20 points in the first tie-breaker to forge a 380-tie.In the second tiebreaker,Auburn missed the tos-sup question, which North

    answered correctly, thenscored all of the bonuspoints.

    The loss marks the firsttime since at least the2003 season that Auburnhas not been in first placein the varsity conferencestandings.

    Other matches at Boylan

    found North beating Boylan490-80 and Belvidere 370-70. Auburn defeated Bel-videre 480-70 and Boylan410-10 and Boylan defeat-ed Belvidere 240-100.

    At Hononegah, Guilfordwent 3-0, beating Harlem180-160, Hononegah 170-

    110 and East 210-60. Hon-onegah beat East 300-50and Harlem 190-160 andHarlem beat East 290-50.

    In junior varsity matchesat Boylan, Auburn beat Bel-videre 470-40, North 510-90 and Boylan 460-100;Boylan beat North 260-90 and Belvidere 290-70;

    and North beat Belvidere120-90. Jayvee matchesat Hononegah: Hononegah350-20 over East, 360-30over Guilford and 230-90over Harlem; Harlem 240-30 over Guilford and 150-30 over East; Guilford 110-30 over East.

    Varsity standings: Guil-ford 3-0, North 3-0, Auburn2-1, Hononegah 2-1, Boylan1-2, Harlem 1-2, Belvidere0-3, East 0-3.
