There are various methodsfor stripping wallpaper but byfar the easiest is a wallpaper

steam stripper, which you canhire or buy inexpensively.If you have got a lot of wallpa-

per to strip, it certainly makessense to buy one.

These strippers are similar tobig kettles and its easy to getscalded by the steam or drips ofboiling water, so use with careand try to keep the hose straightbecause it can twist off, leavingsteam streaming dangerouslyfrom the stripper. To operate a steam stripper,you simply hold the steam plateto the wall and wait for thesteam to loosen the wallpaper.

Keep testing to see if the paperis loose because you can dam-age the plaster underneath ifyou hold the plate on for toolong.

For speed, hold the plate to the

wall with one hand and scrapewhere youve already steamedwith the other hand. Some wallpapers have morethan one layer, or youll findlayers of different wallpapers,in which case its often easier toremove one layer at a time.

The steam will penetrate betterif you score the wallpaper first,especially if its thick, but you

may leave score lines in the plas-ter, which is no good if yourenot replastering or repapering,so do a tester patch first. The best wallpaper strippingknives have long metal handlesand replaceable blades, whichscrew in place.

The only problem is that theseblades are really sharp when

new and can damage the plasterunderneath if the wallpaper isthin or youre not careful whenscraping.

If youre worried about this,traditional wallpaper scraperswith non-replaceable,triangular-shaped blades are lesssharp. Clear up your wallpaper

scrapings as you go alongbecause once dry, they set hardand can stick like glue to floorsand other surfaces.

After stripping, youll need toscrub and scrape the walls withsugar-soap solution and thenclean water to get rid of anyleftover paste and scraps ofpaper.
