Performing Arts Exams are coming around again……

SAVE THE DATE 9,10,11 April 2014

Students in classical ballet, musical theatre acting and dance team will yet again have the op-portunity this year to participate in external exam-inations administered through PTD and OFQUAL. Our students always work very hard for these op-portunities and we wish them every success in the third year of running the examinations.

Students in these extra-curricular classes will be taking home their examination information next week when clubs resume, and all forms should be returned to Ms. Annarie by the first week in Feb-ruary to allow participation in the session in order to meet strict closing dates.

This is also a good time for students to ensure they meet the regulation uniform requirements for their subjects being examined.

If there are any questions, please contact Ms. Annarie at [email protected] and she will be happy to help.

in the top 10 of his races. Kavanagh L. came second in the 200 IM and 100 Fly, and Flynn H.

came first in the 200 Fly and third in the 50 Fly.

Parents, There have been many changes made to the game schedules for basketball and girls’ football. Please note the current schedule, and make sure players listen to coaches about any future schedule changes. We apologize for any confusion, but multiple schools had conflicts and there were use of facility conflicts.

SEMESTER EXAMS

All students in grades 6-12 will take semester ex-ams from January 20-24. These exams are associ-

ated with five core courses: Math, English, Science,

Social Studies, and Spanish. The

semester exam schedule is at-tached to this newsletter. Please

note when your exams are sched-

uled.

IB LEARNER PROFILE “BALANCED” IN ACTION

Balanced is a word that is used frequently in a music class-

room, often in reference to volume or dynamics. When a group performs, it is important for each instrument and/or voice to be

balanced, blending with each other to make one sound. What we

have discovered is that balanced does not always mean equal, but in order for one voice to be heard, others may have to play or sing

softer. Working together to make one balanced sound is a goal that we are always striving for that takes a conscious effort from each

performer. We are working hard in all grade levels to ensure that

each of our performances is perfectly balanced, allowing each voice

to be heard.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM TRAVELS TO CHICAGO Next week our Model UN team will be heading to Chicago to take part in their second Model UN conference. The Chicago International Mod-el UN conference is attended by approximately 1200 students from all across the world, and is a great experience for all the students involved. We are pleased to see both returning members, who were part of the country’s first ever Model UN team to go off-island to a conference, and new members, who have joined us in our second successful year, representing Grades 9 through to 11, heading up to the frozen north! CIS students this year will primarily be representing Uganda in both modern day and historical conferences. We are particularly excit-ed about representing Uganda in the International Court of Justice, which is the hardest committee to get into, and also in the 1971 historic simulations, as this was a very important year for the country - the coup d’état of Idi Amin. CIS students have been working hard to prepare their position papers representing the views of Uganda on topics as var-ied as The Millennium Development Goals, The Situation in Tibet, Re-newable Energy, The Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Gen-ocide, The Singapore Declaration (1971 cabinet), and Apartheid in South Africa (1971) along with many more.

We are very proud of our students for all of their hard work and preparation, and wish them every success, both in the conference meetings and in the sub-zero temperatures!

SECONDARY STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Please make sure to arrive to school prior to 8:00

a.m. During the past two weeks, there have been a signifi-

cant number of students tardy at

the beginning of the school

day. If students arrive to school

after 8:00 a.m., they need to go

to the office and receive a pass

to enter class. Thank you.

16 January 2014

Dear CIS Families,

Greetings to you from the PTA – we hope that 2014 is off to a great start!

Firstly, we would like to extend a warm welcome to the new families who have recently joined our community

at CIS - we hope that you and your children are settling in well and are enjoying school life at CIS!

As leaders of your Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we are a peer-nominated, voluntary board, with an

annual nomination and election process held at the end of each school year.

As the needs and wants of our school community evolve, so do the PTA’s objectives, with our primary goal to

build community and promote school spirit. With the focus taken away from fundraising this year, our board

has decided not to organize a “Spring Gala,” which is typically a large fundraising event held in the spring.

Instead, we have planned a few smaller events throughout the year, including the upcoming “Wine and Cheese

Social” on February 1st.

We will soon begin plans for a school-wide “Jog-A-Thon,” and we hope to organize a “Family Beach-Bash” to

celebrate the end of the school year!

These events, including teacher appreciation efforts, couldn’t be possible without parent volunteers. If

you’re interested in helping, please send us an email. We need you and welcome your participation!

If you have any thoughts, ideas or concerns that you would like to voice, please remember that we are here for

you. Feel free to contact us any time.

We look forward to hearing from you, and seeing you on campus!

Warmest Regards,

The PTA Board
