With the last of the UAE’s winter haze blowing away, the trendsetters have revved up for their new deliveries as well. The Eveningz guide does not disappoint once again with a big city child’s guide to shopping, health and beauty, chic travel, music, and concepts that will drive cultural conversation

for months to come. With spring and its exciting weather upon us our wardrobes harken a new season of social engagement. With the heat starting to peak back in along with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship (page 95), I began thinking back to the days when tennis wasn’t just a hobby, but a zealous lifestyle. Eveningz interview with Mohammed Al Habtoor (page 109) brought with it a bouquet of passion for life-changing hobbies, business and life. My love for sports and for sporting those looks that kill in sweet surrender never fails to get my mood on. I have to say that when my favorite pair of Italian leather boots was put to rest just last week following this Polo fever, I had a newfound appreciation for Varsha’s piece on The Cobbler’s leather care tips (page39). We have a vast amount of pages that will bring some thought to the important parts of your lives with the varied passions and colors we bring. We have 76 pages of stylish trends and shopping plus another 79 pages of drama, inspiration, chic travel and more panache. Some people may lust for matches on the tennis court, on the polo field, or in the boardroom (like Stefanie Ost upping her game with business etiquette courses on page 113). Others may find their playing field takes a slightly more chic form in beauty, malls and outfits. Wherever your games are played, Eveningz is there to keep the playing field in your favor and gives you the upper hand in style. Whether it means giving you the latest on trendy clothes, the sexiest cars, or chicest sports; we are there to keep you looking your best on all turfs. Work Hard. Play Hard…But Always in Style.

On Trend Indian InspirationGet some Asian spice into your life, sassy yet elegant Marchesa Indian inspiration

The Marchesa designers carved out their design as a result of their inspiration from India. It would not be wrong if we call the Marchesa collection the epic monolith of

the fashion runway. Women’s dreams come to life now and stand in front of Marchesa’s collection. As always, the collection wasn’t commercially doable but it was made for dreaming purposes and also charmed the duchess’s desires and fascination. Sometimes it’s all about bounce into the wildest caprices of heart.

This collection was full of spice and thrilled style; some may have called it over-the-top, but sometimes it’s worthy to experiment and take such glitzy risks in life. Craig and Chapman’s approach to design has pretty much always been swanky and flashy, because for them the sticks of dynamite will open the doors to the extraordinary. In this collection they both have explored a whole new vocabulary and jargon of threadwork, embroidery and colors and they played with the combinations very well. An eloquent palette, loveliest in looks of chartreuse, peacock, bordeaux, or eggplant tones tipped with gold is the designers ideal modish theme of this collection. They unified those rudiments into their own aesthetic collection and summoned some sensational stunners on the runway.

It’s the third year of Muscat Fashion Week and glamor is at its peak. The talented and promising faces of the future did a tremendous job in bringing the best fashion sagacity and nous in the world.

HE Sultan Bin Hamdoon Al Harthi says:

“This is the beauty of Muscat Fashion Week. There are some incredible undiscovered talents out there who need to be noticed, and we are extremely proud to offer a platform for the next generation of Arab designers.”

At the opening of Muscat Fashion Week all the latest collections by Nawal Al Hooti, Das Collection, Tatyana Aceeva and Zhor Raîs were the best sophisticated yet embellished treats to fashion paramours. Guests were wowed by muted grey, deep blue and amber tones with a touch of traditional Omani beading and embroidery. Emirati design duo Reem and Hind Beljafla shadowed the runway with an equally inspiring throng of sleek and lustrous style lavished in luxurious gold and neutral shades with a pop of bright colors and a multicultural influence.

Glitzy and dazzling gowns were in profusion when evening attire designer Tatyana Aceeva’s commendable collection hit the runway. Blush colored laced up dresses surged exquisitely striking the audience with amazing fashion fascination.

Moroccan designer, Zhor Raîs, celebrated the true colors with the high essence of Arabia with long and sleek silhouettes in lax and soft cream hues, olive greens and a surge of buttery shades , all adorned with sophisticated needlework and cummerbund girdles that turned the runway into dazzling and glitzy platform.

Page 29: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Bringing the glamor to the next level, the impressive designers Toujouri, Kanzi, Razan Alazzouni and Dibaj managed to strike the fashion lovers with their elite and savvy latest collections.

Toujouri, as one of the high profile brands in the region, lit up the runway with her stylish designs. Full-skirted ball gowns with cinched midriffs flounced down to the runway in conjunction with one piece glamorous garment (jumpsuits) and column dresses that set the runway to the fire.

Kanzi with her hot perri sense of style dazzled the runway with her dynamic designs. Metallic add-ons featured deeply on this lustrous and modern collection of abayas, kaftans and flowing dresses. Following on with the passion for fashion Razan Alazzouni’s starred her latest monochrome collection which depicted a communal gesture of approval from the crowd. Capacious skirts and outfits were superficial all over the collection that had thwarts of lemon and cobalt blue.

Preceding the thrill of the Omani sisters, Dibaj were at hand to permeate some indigenous and local spice into the evening. Khanjar belts and folktale inflated cuffs and hemlines gave a noticeably local customary impression to the collection that highlighted a display of gorgeous and ironic hues.

The elegant sagacity of Endemage

Page 31: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

The awaited finale has arrived; the fashion pack took their seats for the closing times to see the innovative and chic collection by C’est Moi, Endemage, Ahmed Talfit and Mauzan.

C’est Moi divulged the unique and remarkable collection that exhibited intricate beadwork and embroidery. Perky and audacious shades decked with an array of outlines plus wistful smooth and curving dresses that gave a luxurious Bohemian feel.

Following the suit, Omani allies Lubna and Nadia Al Zakwani – the artistic cognizance behind the Endemage label – fascinated the gathering with their fashion accelerative creations that innovatively depict the Omani customary panache.

Pursuing the glam, designer Ahmed Talfit presented a sculptural and an experimental collection with potent lines for the next to last in the show. Leather, silk and tulle tangled together splendidly with precise prominence on strong shoulders and accentuated waistlines.

The talented designer behind the Mauzan label spellbound the audience for one final time with an absolute and inspiring collection of modern and elegant abayas.

That’s how the glam and fashion elegance stunned and enthralled the audience with their collection and designs. As darkness decked the runway, lodgers were offered one last chance to sight the collections and meet the designers in person at the esteemed Opera Galleria.

With another fashion filled and efficacious year to its name, the question that relics puckered on everyone’s lips is, what will Muscat Fashion Week, 2014, have in-store?

Stay Tuned ….

NADINE KANSO, a name which not only depicts the true colors of art but she is one of those women who oozes creativity and style. Nadine was born

and raised in a Lebanese cultured environment. Later on she gained two degrees from Lebanese American University- - Communication Arts and Advertising Design. Her faithful dedication along with these two degrees laid the strong foundation of her artistic work today. Working as a journalist coupled with exploration of design-related fields, she was coznvinced that this was the call from the art world and finally in 2006 the invitation came along from the Victoria & Albert museum in London. Nadine participated in a group exhibition in London and this success led her to a solo showing in Dubai.

Nadine’s artistic and stylish sense of dressing as well as her imaginative way of clicking pictures is a blend of modern and timeless thinking. Her passion and love for Arab culture impelled her to start her own jewelry line “Bil Arabi”. Once upon a time, the presence (or absence) of a ring was capable of sending one of two messages: single or not available. She wanted her jewelry to speak out and say more than that. She took inspiration from the calligraphic style of the Arabic alphabet; she started off designing a ring with an Arabic letter. She was fascinated by how beautifully one letter led to the whole alphabet, finally completes words and eventually phrases. Today she creates more than rings, pendants and earrings.

Jewelry Takes People’s Eyes Off Your Wrinkles.

“Arabic calligraphy is very graphic and beautiful. For me it is about being proud of wearing

an Arabic letter on your wrist.”

Gwyneth Paltrow - Standing Tall and ProudThis pale and talented beauty was on the threshold of fashion obliteration but she conquered and how!

She’s been there, faced that, heard it and seen it all. Painful break-up, scathing criticism and open scorn, Gwyneth Paltrow’s life has been

anything but dull. Born in a family with cinema in its veins, it was only a matter of time before Gwyneth made an entry into Hollywood. Irrespective of a strong background in the performing arts, it wasn’t a bed of roses for her. There was never an iota of doubt in anyone’s mind that she could act but her figure and looks came under critical scanner the moment her work started getting noticed. “Her skin is too pale” “her face is too angular” “she’s too thin” these were just some of the shortcomings people and fashion critics loved to pierce Gwyneth with. A lesser individual would probably have crouched under the weight but Gwyneth stood tall. Not only did she handle all the negativity around her with élan, but also successfully turned each one into her strength. Lo and behold! A fashion icon was born.

During the premier of her movie Jefferson in Paris, in 1995 Gwyneth made people sit up and notice her effortless elegance for the first time. Dressed in a simple floor length ivory gown, straight shoulder length hair and minimal make-up, Gwyneth exuded grace beyond her years. She was a novice, new to the glare of a thousand shutter bugs yet she showed poise only seen in seasoned actresses who’ve put years of labour behind their craft and looks. In a way, her sense of fashion resembles her approach to acting; nothing is over the top or glossy but as they say, still waters run deep. Gwyneth’s strength is her composure and charm which have a far wider appeal than simply her clothes. Her style is timeless, quite in sync with her unique beauty which has garnered her many admirers over the years.

Neutral colors are her preferred choice; something hardcore fashionistas thought would be a suicide move for one as pale as Gwyneth. They work for her because she never tried to hide her essence or who she was. Gwyneth is never slathered in artificial tanning lotions to appear half-baked on the red carpet. She made use of her pale skin, combining it with soft colors like ivory, peach, white and nude. In the end these hues only added to her mystique.

The suit warn during Boss Nuit Pour femme’s launch in Dubai is one perfect example of how Gwyneth’s style defies time. Years later, it isn’t considered masculine for a lady to step out in a crisp suit for an event. During the recently concluded Autumn/ Winter collection of 2012, these suits, aptly categorized under Androgyny, a fashionable marriage between feminine appeal and masculine grace, these suits scorched the runway.

She knows that there really isn’t a time frame for fashion and certain styles will keep coming back, with a cut here and a nick there.“I’m an artist, and the need to get inside myself and be creative and be other people is a part of who I am. I don’t imagine I’ll abandon that completely,” she was quoted as saying and this attitude reflects in her styling as well. She’s the same woman who made pink look ethereal when she showed up in a cotton candy coloured ball gown designed by the legendary Ralf Lauren and won the best actress award for her role as Shakespeare’s lover in the movie as well. History is witness that pink has rarely seen the light of day on the Oscar’s red carpet and here was Gwyneth, the ecstatic front-runner in her profession that year, dressed in baby pink! Needless to say it required guts and class. She is one of those women who are aging gracefully. “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick”. And boy do they look good on her!

Criticized for her weight, her boyish figure and lack of ‘womanly’ assets, Gwyneth counters it all by wearing dresses with deep plunging necklines, a staple Gwyneth look now. Those dangerously steep necklines would probably look indecent on a woman with a heavily endowed chest. When she sashays down in those gowns that are always complimented by towering heels, Gwyneth looks untouchable. “If we were living in ancient Rome or Greece, I would be considered sickly and unattractive. The times dictate that thin is better for some strange reason, which I think is foolish.” A little humility never hurt anyone either right?

Thanks to her effortless style, she was named ‘World’s Best Dressed Woman’ by People’s magazine in 2012. Some of the biggest names in fashion, Estee Lauder and Hugo Boss have her onboard to market their fragrances. She was recently in Dubai to promote Hugo Boss’s fragrance in the city. Looking radiant in a shimmery steel grey jumpsuit one day and a gorgeous grey gown on the other, Gwyneth was reveling in winter’s chilly charm in the Middle East. She was the epitome of charm and beauty. The gulf has rarely seen this lean, one-woman machine on their sand lands before and now that they’ve got a taste of her, they’ve been left wanting more. Hugo Boss is definitely synonymous with luxury and what better brand ambassador could they have chosen than a cultured lady like Gwyneth to endorse their perfume. There was a maternal glow on her face whenever she spoke of her two children, daughter Apple and son Moses. A coy smile would leak out from her lips when asked to describe her relationship with her husband, Coldplay front man Chris Martin. She is also a cook, a full time mother, blogger and humanitarian. She does all that, looking like she just stepped out of a magazine cover!

Fashion IconPierce Brosnan Eternal grace with irreplaceable persona

Pierce Brosnan – a name which has been nominated and awarded not only for the man behind it with his tremendous acting skills but even for his unique and classy sense of style and personality. Pierce was even

voted the Sexiest Man Alive in 2001. His role as the global man of mystery – 007 or as a distant desolate dad in ‘Remember Me’ – have made the enigmatic impact of Brosnan impeccable style. For Brosnan it is a touch of his personality that he lugs with affluence into his day to day life, refurbished with the charm and charisma of a true gentleman.

Reviving the James Bond franchise with Pierce Brosnan playing the lead as 007 mystery man, enthralled the audience not only with his acting skills but with the signature style he created for this imaginary man. A number of full-throttle action scenes and death defying performances along with world-record-setting stunts made Brosnan the real hero. Creating a chic and classic look which justifies the character and will be unforgettable for a decade, it was because of Brosnan that the James Bond’s wardrobe was changed with a new dash of style by removing the outdated or overly trendy clothes. Gone were high-waist trousers and anything remotely ‘80s influenced. Instead, Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond slip on sleek suits from Italian designer Brioni teamed up with sharp and shrill knee-length jackets and leather gloves added the clique look to the character. Of course, to assist him to balance into the night, he relapsed to his emblem all-black ensembles that were tugged just enough to make them appropriate.

Sources tell us that Brosnan said [on his good looks]“I don’t see myself as the hunk of the month.”

But we think that he is truly the living fashion iconic panache who incarnates the relaxed yet bespoke elegance at the same time. He walks with ease with such a grace that makes him the man of sophistication. He is often seen in a suit but he is just as decent at showing off a prodigious off-duty look which makes him even more strikingly desired.

They say to be a gentleman one should have good looks with a beautiful soul and Pierce Brosnan has been a true combination of that. He is an Ambassador for UNICEF Ireland since 2001 and he has been contributing for the betterment of the world for quite some time. “We owe it to our children to be better stewards of the environment. The alternative? - A world without whales. It’s too terrible to imagine” – Pierce Brosnan

Today he lives a very lavish lifestyle with a paramount of cars, mansions and a handsome bank balance. He is the real inspiration to countless people who want to follow their dreams and live their life to the fullest.

“When people don’t believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.” – Pierce Brosnan

The Rise OfCoco Cinderella“My life didn’t please me, so I created my life” Coco Chanel

Before she changed the face of fashion by launching luxurious fragrances, designing the little black dress and freeing women from corseted silhouettes, Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel came from humble beginnings which she was determined to change and

create the life she wanted - one of a successful, socially prominent entrepreneur and fashion designer.

On August 19, 1883, Gabrielle Chanel was born in Saumur, France, to an unwed Eugénie Devolle, a laundrywoman and Albert Chanel, a street vendor. When Gabrielle was just 12 years old, her mother died of bronchitis. Following her mother’s death, Gabrielle’s father sent her to the Catholic monastery of Aubazine, which was “founded to care for the poor and rejected, including running homes for abandoned and orphaned girls”. It was during her 6 years at the orphanage that Gabrielle learned to sew. When she turned 18, she left the orphanage and started working for a local tailor to make ends meet.

At this point in Gabrielle’s life there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel that poverty and orphanhood had brought her into; however, the vision of escaping her life and creating one that she loved was always on her mind. When questioned about her childhood and education, she would often concoct stories that were a figment of her imagination and far from the reality of her poverty. One of the most popular fabrications include Gabrielle claiming that when her mother died, her father sailed to America and sent her to live with two ruthless spinster aunts.

Gabrielle envisioned herself to make a successful career in theatre. In an attempt to make this dream a reality, she would sing at “La Rotonde”, a popular cabaret venue. Even though Gabrielle had the looks and charm to become a stage performer, her voice did not impress those she auditioned for. After a few failed attempts at a stage career in the theatre and concert hall infused town of Vichy, Coco returned back to her haunt “La Rotonde” and eventually realized that a successful stage career wasn’t on the cards.

Her stage career may have failed, but it gave her the famous nickname “Coco” – a name given to her by the drunken soldiers for whom she performed the songs “Ko Ko Ri Ko” and “Qui qu’a vu Coco” at the “La Rotonde”. It was during this time that Coco met Etienne Balsan, a French ex-cavalry officer and wealthy textile heir. Balsan was smitten by Chanel and invited her to live in his home, a proposal that Chanel accepted. Living with Balsan in his chateau Royallieu was Chanel’s first encounter with the high life.

He often showered her with diamonds, dresses and pearls, and introduced her to the social set he partied with at the time. It was while living at Balsan’s chateau that Chanel started designing hats as a diversion, one that would soon turn into a commercial venture. After being faithful to Balsan for 2 years, Chanel began an affair with one of Balsan’s friends – Captain Arthur Edward Capel in 1908. Of being the object of affection of Balsan and Capel, Coco said, “...two gentlemen were outbidding for my hot little body.” Capel was a wealthy English industrialist who not only put Chanel up in an apartment in Paris but also financed her first hat store in 1910, Chanel Modes, located at 21 rue Cambon, Paris following which he financed a second boutique for Chanel located in Deauville in 1913. This boutique sold casual clothes suitable for leisure which were made out of fabrics like jersey and tricot.

These fabrics were used for men’s underwear which is why it was considered a rebellious move on Chanel’s part at the time when stiff fabrics and corseted silhouettes were the norm. The relationship lasted for 9 years, even after Capel got married to an English aristocrat. Capel passed away unexpectedly in a car accident, an event that shook Chanel to her core. Chanel spoke of Capel’s death twenty-five years later when she said, “His death was a terrible blow to me. In losing Capel, I lost everything. What followed was not a life of happiness, I have to say.”

Chanel never married and when asked about her decision to refrain from getting married, she said, “It’s probably not just by chance that I’m alone. It would be very hard for a man to live with me, unless he’s terribly strong. And if he’s stronger than I, I’m the one who can’t live with him. … I’m neither smart nor stupid, but I don’t think I’m a run-of-the-mill person. I’ve been in business without being a businesswoman; I’ve loved without being a woman made only for love. The two men I’ve loved, I think, will remember me, on earth or in heaven, because men always remember a woman who caused them concern and uneasiness. I’ve done my best, in regard to people and to life, without precepts, but with a taste for justice.”

Page 40: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

After Capel’s death, Chanel focused all her energy on expanding her business and climbing the social ladder. Prior to Chanel, no dressmaker had ever been a part of the “society”. However, Chanel saw to it

to change that. People couldn’t get enough of her; she was an international icon who was invited to all the high society events. Chanel, however, was unfazed and unsurprised by all the attention she drew. She commented: “I did not go into society because I had to design clothes. I designed clothes precisely because I did go out, because I was the first to live the life of this century.” Nothing could stop Chanel from moving forward, not even World War I.

“She was really quite a radical person,” says Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and author of Women of Fashion. “She grew up very poor; a kept woman who didn’t want to just be somebody’s mistress. She identified with wealthy men. She wanted to have the independence that they had. She rejected a lot of the feminine styles of her day and embraced androgyny. In a way, she was the first female dandy, which I think is still very powerfully modern.” Maison Chanel was established by the 1920’s at 31, rue Cambon in Paris, the headquarters to this day. Chanel, with her iconic bob haircut and tan, became a fashion icon representing the modern day practical woman. In 1922, Chanel launched Chanel No.5, which today is the world’s bestselling fragrance. Chanel No.5 was a hit with Hollywood celebrities including Marilyn Monroe who once famously said:

What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course.

In 1925 Chanel launched her signature cardigan followed by the little black dress next year. Both items continue to be a part of every Chanel collection and are considered fashion staples. Even though Chanel saw great success in Europe, her trip to Hollywood was a

bust. Her designs did not work in Hollywood and she described the industry as “infantile”.

When World War II started, Chanel decided that it was not a time for fashion and shut down all her shops which led to 3000 employees losing their jobs. During the German occupation of France, Chanel stayed at The Ritz in Paris which was also the preferred residence for upper-class German military officials. It was here that she started an affair with a Nazi officer which led to her arrest in September 1944. She was released a few hours later on the same day. To escape the controversy surrounding her in France, Chanel flew to Switzerland. She returned 9 years later to find that the pre-war fashion industry which was dominated by women couturiers like Lanvin, Schiaparelli and herself was now taken over by male couturiers such as Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga. However, Coco always had confidence in herself and in her brand. When asked about Chanel fashion Coco once remarked, “I don’t like people talking about the Chanel fashion; Chanel – above all else, is a style. Fashion, you see, goes out of fashion. Style never.”

In 1954, then over seventy years old, Chanel re-established her couture house and launched her new collection which was panned by the European press – they felt her status was tainted by her liaison with the Nazis. On one hand, Europe rejected Chanel’s new collection whereas on the other hand America and Britain applauded it. Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelley, popular starlets of the 1950’s and 1960’s were photographed in Chanel’s effortlessly elegant boxy cardigan suits which further heightened Chanel’s popularity. Chanel’s comeback to the fashion world was nothing short of brilliant.

Chanel continued to work till hear death at the age of 87. She died on Sunday, January 10, 1971 at the Hotel Ritz where she had lived for more than thirty years.

In 1915, when Chanel was just starting out, Harper’s Bazaar raved: “The woman who hasn’t at least one Chanel is hopelessly out of fashion...This season the name Chanel is on the lips of every buyer.” Almost a century later and the rave still holds true. Chanel this season, Chanel every season.

Classic leather shoes can make any outfit pop, and with proper care, last you a lifetime. Leather shoes are organic objects and require plentiful care to retain their lustrous condition. The following three simple tips are The Cobbler’s ideal way of taking

care of both men’s and women’s leather dress shoes:

Cleaning: If your shoe has laces, take off your laces. Use a soft bristled brush to remove any dirt. Keep your shoe in a firm position by supporting it on one hand and using the other hand to apply saddle soap or another suitable cleanser to the leather parts of the shoe. Use the same bristled brush work the cleaner all over the shoe. Let the shoe dry for twenty minutes.

Conditioning and Polishing: Conditioning your leather shoe is exactly like moisturizing your skin – if you don’t moisturize your skin repeatedly, it will become dry as time passes. To prevent flakes and wrinkles, rub a drop of conditioner all over your shoe in a circular motion. Next, use a polish that matches the color of your shoe. A lanoline-based beeswax polish is expert recommended as it softens and protects the shoe at the same time. Beeswax polishes are better than traditional polishes as they form a protective layer on top of the skin rather than being absorbed into it. Some polishes tend to contain toxic chemicals; in such cases, olive oil and walnut oil are excellent alternative options to polish your shoes. Use a nylon cloth to wipe off the excess polish and buff the shoe.

Weatherproofing: To make sure your leather shoe lasts through the UAE’s mildly chilly winters to the intensely scorching summers, use a spray-on water repellent to protect your shoe against the natural elements. However, before application use a warm sponge to prep your shoe – this will allow better absorption of the water repellent by the shoe.

Thankfully, for all you leather shoe owners, the second store of The Cobbler was recently launched at the Level shoe district in Dubai Mall. The Cobbler concept was entirely designed and launched by marketing expert Sibylle Arnold-Shish, with her husband. Born and raised in France, with a professional background gained across Paris and London, they quickly identified a gap in the market for upscale shoe repair and quality formal footwear for men, upon their arrival in Dubai in 2008. “We felt that neighborhood cobblers similar to the ones we can find in France were cruelly missing from the retail landscape in the Middle East.” said Sibylle

Arnold-Shish. She continued,

“Our idea was to bring a true expert to whom you can trust your most valued pair of shoes and who knows each customer personally.”

The company only recruits professionals recognized by the ‘Compagnons du Devoir’, a French professional apprenticeship, training craftsmen to the highest standards of know-how and customer service. ‘Compagnons’ cobblers are able to fix and repair any kind of shoe, for men and women, with a high quality delivery after their first few years of apprenticeship. By enhancing their experience and training, they can aspire to become master cobblers, who are also able to design and make bespoke shoes to the highest standards.

Matters Of The Heart A Heart Disease Lifestyle

A controlled carbohydrate lifestyle really prevents risk factors for heart disease. - Robert Atkins

Our heart is one extraordinarily impressive organ; in the short 60 seconds it will take you to breeze through the following paragraph, this small but powerful friend will have pushed a massive 1.5 gallons of your blood through an astounding 96,560 kilometers of blood vessels.

Just to put that tiny figure into perspective, that’s more than double the Earth’s circumference! However despite the superpowers your ticker hides behind your chest (and that it’s the organ that pretty much keeps you, well, alive), most individuals don’t do anywhere near enough to preserve their heart health.

That’s right, in the UAE one in every four casualties is credited to a cardiovascular disease. You may call it a shocking fact, marking statistic, or you may call it a wakeup call, but in the end the fact remains: heart disease is a deadly setback we must learn to live and cope with.

So, the bad news is you’ve been diagnosed and told your heart condition isn’t exactly what you were hoping for; the good news is with a few tweaks in your lifestyle, you may not even notice the problem. Read on for our tips on how to keep your heart health up to par and cope with the disease.

Ditch The SaltDiets that contain a high salt consumption escalate blood pressure, which is a key risk in the causes of heart disease. Not only will this keep your heart’s health on track but it will also help your waistline look slimmer without the extra bloat. Beware when eating out! Does this mean your socializing and eating out days are over? Of course not! Just keep this tip in mind and order smart or ask your order taker to prepare your dishes with low sodium standards.

Don’t Ditch SleepIt’s no shocker that long days leave you craving shut-eye. A good night’s sleep will not only leave you feeling serene and refreshed but also brand new. Research has shown that getting those extra Z’s are also overall a healthy addition regarding your heart. Sleep needs will vary from person to person, but the consensus is that adults require circa eight hours of sleep on a nightly basis. You can still party like a rock star with your entourage, just make sure you catch an extra Z or two.

Get MovingSedentariness is one of the main risk factors in heart disease. Nevertheless, working out aids in improving heart health, and may even go as far as reversing existing heart disease tribulations. Just like every other muscle, the heart becomes stronger when you exercise; stronger for what? It can pump extra blood through the body with every single beat it beats and continues performing at maximum levels if required with less strain. Physical exercise boasts several effects that profit the heart and circulation. These remunerations comprise improving cholesterol and fat levels, reduction in artery inflammation, assisting programs targeting weight loss, and aiding to preserve blood vessels flexible and open. So, it’s not just about creating a hulk-heart but also about your look and feel. Not a jogger? Walk. Not a dancer? Swim. Visit us online for a series of fun and alternative ideas on how to workout!

Manage StressBeware of “stress is good for you” advocates; they themselves may not even realize how frazzled they are. Stress sparks an escalation of cortisol, a stress hormone that may increase blood-sugar levels as well as blood pressure. The cortisol overdraft may direct the body into a continuous state of chemical stimulation, which can ultimately be the root of a heart attack. Scared? All you need to do is manage those prickly strain factors and safeguard your chest. Take up yoga, learn to disconnect and unwind from your problems, organize yourself, and exercise whenever possible.

Put Out That CigTobacco smoke contents partake high carbon monoxide levels; this affects the heart by decreasing the oxygen quantity that the blood is capable of carrying. This denotes that the heart, brain, and lungs as well as other vital organs are not receiving sufficient oxygen to execute daily functions. As if that’s not enough, nicotine instigates an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Over a period of time the cardiovascular system sees a production of astonishing “wear and tear.” Tobacco smokers are at a higher risk of having a heart attack, blood clots, hemorrhages, blood pressure, and strokes. Not convinced? Check out this little number: the reality is smoking triples the possibility of passing from heart disease.

Eat Healthy FoodsNot just for your waistline or skin. Stop chowing on unhealthy foodstuff and start indulging in healthy nourishing dining-bliss. Eat low fat foots, high protein dishes, go green and don’t forget some fruit. Our favorite cooking methods are: steamed, grilled, poached, boiled and baked. Forget about your fried foes. What may have at first glance appeared overwhelming may end up turning into a pleasant, fresh way of living. And the handout? a healthier heart. We’d say it’s well worth the effort.

Peaceful Body, Peaceful MindA Serene Standard of Living With The Yoga Room

Eveningz | 55 | Health & Beauty

Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim, the better your practice, the brighter the flame.

Page 59: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

You fall, you bleed, you heal. Our bodies are so fantastically put together in such a way that we can heal ourselves. Our very being has the power to knit itself back together when

we get cut; it processes, digests, detoxifies and detaches built-up material on a daily basis. However, we underrate the importance of giving our bodies the appropriate environment needed to heal and remain balanced. Sometimes, this can mean giving yourself that spare succour, love and care.

Your next go-to spot to relax your mind and create this peace haven just opened its doors to Dubai’s busy residents and presents itself as the Ashtanga yoga studio – The Yoga Room. The studio is a place where all people seeking sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of daily life in Dubai can take a moment to unwind and disconnect. It is a space that welcomes people from all walks of life to come in and experience Ashtanga Yoga in its truest and purest form, as originally taught by the Ashtanga method’s founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

Yoga is universally linked with weight loss and exercise; however, the Sanskrit word ‘Yoga’ means to “unite”, and is typically a term that defines a physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional system developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Guruji) and is taught by a lineage of teachers on a global scale. The term Ashtanga literally breaks down to 8 (Ashtau) limbs (Anga),

and refers to the 8 steps that are practiced in this method.

Yoga asana, or the physical practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, involves the synchronization of breath with a progressive series of postures. This method produces internal heat that detoxifies, purifies and cleanses the muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation that helps the release of toxins from the body. Some of the many benefits of yoga asana are improved flexibility, increased strength and endurance, stress relief and physical pain relief.

The Yoga Room was established by Joumana Saber, who was first introduced to yoga while attending university in Montreal, Canada. Her first experience of yoga was an Ashtanga Vinyasa class at Sattva Yoga Shala. She studied with senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Mark Darby, one of the very few people worldwide to have attained the highest level of yoga teaching accreditation. Joumana was initially attracted to the physical practice of Ashtanga yoga, but her curiosity about the philosophy of yoga grew with her fascination for this dynamic style.

Joumana’s dedication to the method helped her realize that yoga is more than just a physical exercise - it is in fact a lifestyle practiced on and off the mat. After moving back to Dubai, she completed her 200-hour teacher training with the Yoga Alliance and started teaching yoga at Fitness First and Core

Direction. In 2012, she travelled to Mysore to practice at KPJAYI with R. Sharath Jois, grandson of late master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Drawing from her travels, experiences and teachers, Joumana now wishes to share her knowledge and passion for the true and traditional Ashtanga practice at The Yoga Room. The Yoga Room is open daily, and is conveniently located at the ground floor of the Swiss Tower in Cluster Y of the Jumeriah Lakes Towers. A weekly schedule is tailored to include students of all levels. The Yoga Room also holds regular workshops, courses and events for students to deepen their knowledge of yoga.

Olden times Up-to-the-minute:The word perfume emanates from the Latin words “per fumum” which means “through smoke.” In the primeval civilizations of China, Arabia, Egypt and Greece, fragrances were often earmarked for spiritual and holy purposes. They believed that the resins first burned then the smoke rises to the heavens in the most sacred way of communicating with the gods.

The world may be staggering on the periphery of war, but that’s no reason to negate themselves with the fulfillment of their deepest olfactory desires.

The essence of fragrance started from the beauties of France, Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV who was avid about fragrances. Cleopatra was obsessed with them to the point of sending her fastest warships to Turkey to bring back rose oil. Her signature perfume was Marie Antoinette’s and it was so resilient that it left a trail for her captors to find her. Louis XIV, the Sun King, was also known as the Perfume King. Legend says that he would select a different scent each day for members of his court to wear.

Perfume has been a powerful instrument of seduction for centuries. Have you ever stopped to ask: why are some perfumes intoxicating on some and hardly detectable on others? Or why does the same scent seem to carry a different smell on me at different times? Why does my perfume last for such a short time span?

The Chemist In YouBody chemistry is not something we can ignore. It varies with a person’s diet, hormones, overall health and even the pH balance of the skin. Perfumes will blend with the body’s natural aroma but they do so in a chemical reaction which results in either an enriched smell, a neutral one or, maybe even an unpleasant one. Believe it or not, your body’s smell will vary according to environment and mood! This is why your Chanel No. 5 may smell one way today and another tomorrow. If you’ve always hated your oily skin, this might just be the one time you will love it. Oily skin has the tendency to retain scents for longer periods than dry skin.

If seeing is believing, fragrance is feeling.

Page 67: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Choosing a perfume that suits your skin, feelings and personality can be a tough task until you don’t know what exactly you are looking for. To find whether this perfume

is a good fit for you, test it on your pulsation points (neck and wrist). If you wait and let the fragrance settle down and merge with your skin only then you’ll be able to articulate its true precise character, the aura it gives you and the feel of it on your skin will help you to find your signature style. Skin type can define the way perfumes smell. Some skin types rivet and absorb the oils in perfume and reason the aroma to evaporate. A person with this skin sort will need to test several different fragrances to find one that will last. Spray a tiny amount of the scent on the inside of your wrist without rubbing it in and wait. Top notes (perceived instantaneously upon perfume application) will unfold instantly; heart notes (or main body of a perfume) will unveil themselves within 10-15 minutes, and base notes are the fragrances that remain after 20-30 minutes. If a perfume’s scent remains on you long enough to detect the base notes, it is most likely a fantastic fit for you.

Artistic Avowal Trans-aromation pronounces what ensues to you when you smell and feel something at the same time (both tangible and intangible). As your senses are ecstatic by the scent, you are triggering a déjà vu familiarity. A scent can abruptly surge through the fog of the day and gives you an extraordinary feeling – peace we can call it. Through trans-aromation you can be related to an utterly different aromas cape and discern into a new sense of self-indulgence.

“You are never fully dressed without perfume!” - C.JoyBell C

To get benevolence by this ecstatic effect, each perfumer works with a definite palette of fragrances and aromas – it’s just like when a painter make his choice of colors, he is very sure about what kind of color will depict his frame of mind. Only 20% of people consider olfaction as their primary sense. The scents that envelop you throughout your life become part of your experience: your aroma scape or your inner landscape of scent. Your sense of smelling and feeling the scent refers to your specific anthropological perception, taking into account genetics, cultural heritage, place of birth, places you have lived, as well as your physical, psychological, and emotional context.

Your Inner Personification:How well aware are you of each of your personas and inner guises? There are many facades to each person and each of you is worthy its own fragrance. Everyone has a civic persona and at the same time they have their inner secluded side. It’s same like if you are more spontaneous when you’re flying solo and you dance more happily when you’re only dancing for your own self. Your perfume can adorn and embellish your moods or make you feel fresh and original. Mooring you to be the person you always dreamt of being.

Envisioning jewels as the ultimate accompaniment to a woman’s beauty, Mr. Winston once famously stated, “If I could, I would attach the diamonds directly onto a woman’s skin.” And as if the gemstones were woven

right onto the wearer, his jewels achieve an unimagined movement and grace, caressing the skin like the most decadent array of faceted fabrics. From flawless, D-colored diamonds, to fancy colored diamonds-vivid pinks, blues, yellows, rare oranges and greens -each piece of Harry Winston jewelry begins with a study of individual world class gemstones to inspire a unique and extraordinary design.

This diamond-driven style is the culmination of efforts and skills between gemologist, designer and craftsman, working together to create impossibly beautiful jewels. Using near invisible platinum settings, stones are meticulously set by hand in the legendary Winston workshop to achieve the perfect dimension, proportion, and angles of reflection. Transformed into highly dimensional sculptures, diamonds appear to float in their settings, emphasizing the inherent beauty and fire of each individual gem.A signature and a standard in all of their designs, this diamond-driven style is the quality that gives Harry Winston jewelry an aesthetic that endures. It is the quality that transforms fine jewelry into fine art. It is this quality that makes Harry Winston the choice of the elite.

Among the silver screen and all its stars, when it comes to Hollywood’s true glamor and scintillating style nothing sparkles like a Harry Winston diamond. Revolutionizing modern red carpet glamor, Harry Winston was the first jeweler to loan diamonds to an actress for the Academy Awards in 1943. Dressing Best Actress award winner Jennifer Jones in his signature diamonds, Winston set a new standard for celebratory celebrity style. Hollywood glamor was forever changed. A Jeweler to the Stars was born.

From Jennifer Jones to Jennifer Lopez … Sophia Loren to Scarlett Johansson… Marilyn Monroe to Madonna… generations of leading ladies and luminaries look to Harry Winston for the ultimate in red carpet style. In Harry Winston, Hollywood’s leading ladies have found their ultimate leading man.

Water by Harry Winston For one of its latest collections of incredible jewels, the House of Harry Winston pays tribute to this time-honored tradition with a contemporary collection exploring the extraordinary wonders of the world’s most precious elements- rare gemstones and water. Examining the infinite possibilities of rare jewels in the hands of Harry Winston designers and craftsmen, the collection is a discovery of the vast incarnations of water as it interacts with the natural world around it, focusing on its variations in color, movement, and form. Set in ultra-fine platinum wire, intricate compositions of fancy shaped and pavé diamonds evoke the fluidity of tranquil rivers and streams, while delicate strands of brilliant and pear-cut diamonds recall the cascading movement of majestic waterfalls. Different cuts of diamonds recall water in its various forms, from enchanting ocean mists envisioned in brilliant cut diamonds, to glacial ice crystals shown as streamlined baguettes. Rare gemstones in shades of blues and greens-from deep sapphires and emeralds to icy aquamarines, from bright turquoise to vivid Paraiba-mingle with diamonds to capture the water’s spectrum of colors. Featuring 19 newly created designs this exquisite collection brings high jewelry on a journey to the very heart of nature, and the timeless wonders of Winston designs.

Harry Winston presents Ultimate AdornmentsEntitled Ultimate Adornments by Harry Winston, this incredible array of spectacular designs envisions the international art of dressing a woman in the unique style that only Harry Winston can. In creating this exceptional collection, the Harry Winston Design Team returned to the archives for inspiration, including the works Ambaji V. Shinde, Mr. Winston’s chief jewelry designer for more than 40 years (1962-2001). One of Mr. Shinde’s greatest contributions to the house was his ability to examine the world around him, and translate it into extraordinary jewels. Infusing his own Indian heritage into his designs, Mr. Shinde’s unique international perspective continues to define Winston style today, and serves as the creative catalyst behind this impressive collection. Hand crafted entirely in diamonds and platinum, the 40-piece collection is presented through seven distinctly different themes, each recalling unique adornments from around the world.

Highly detailed, each unique piece incorporates different techniques of diamond setting, including the striking use of carefully calibrated baguette diamonds, precisely cut to realize a perfect circular shape. The tailored fit of a beautiful Qipao Cuff, set with more than 700 diamonds, captures the restrained elegance of the structured silhouette.

2.QIPAO by Harry Winston

Exquisite pave diamonds are sculpted into floral motifs evoking the density, yet delicacy of Guipure lace. Exaggerated flowers are intricately layered to bring dimensionality and movement to each piece, including a stunning Guipure necklace, set with more than 50 carats of pave diamonds.

3.GUIPURE by Harry Winston

This series pays tribute to the original arbiters of Winston-style: our founder, Harry Winston, and his beloved wife, Edna. A watch is a must have accessory for men and women alike. It enhances your personality and heightens your style; it is not just a mere want but has turned into a modern day need. For men however, this time teller has

become the vital accessory. Men compare and discuss watches in such a way that they need a watch of certain eminence and worth to ‘fit’ in their social circle. When it comes to watches there is one fine brand in society that turns heads and is constantly admired; it is the most aspiring brand in this very ambitious market Rolex. It is indeed true that if you want to validate your achievement in the world’s frugality, then surely nothing beats a Rolex watch.

The OriginThe story of Rolex (the company) and Hans Wilsdorf (the founder) is intricately tangled. Hans Wilsdorf entered the world of Swiss watchmaking when pocket watches were a common order of the day. Wilsdorf’s passion and dream was to wear a watch on the wrist. He prophesied that a wristwatch could be both unfailing and graceful at the same time. To convince people, he equipped his pioneering magnum opus with small and very precise moments contrived by Swiss watchmaking in Bienne. The name “Rolex”:

In 1908, Hans Wilsdorf predicted the prominence of the brand notion and coined the name “Rolex” to sign his creations. The criteria, which he established, still amaze the modern world. He sought a name depending on following physiognomies:

1. Diminutive, five letters maximum.2. Easy to pronounce in any language.3. Pleasant to sound.4. Easy to remember.5. Possible to inscribe elegantly on the dial and movement of

a watch.

Oyster - The first waterproof watch:In 1926, Hans Wilsdorf’s worked on the matchless idea of waterproofing watches. Finally, his efforts proved successful with the invention of the Rolex Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch in the world; hats off to its casing which was fortified with a nifty patented scheme entailing of a screw-down bezel case back and winding crown. Hermetically sealed, it offered optimal protection for movement. The fluting of the bezel, like that of the case’s back, assisted with a useful purpose. That’s the reason behind Rolex’s visual identity and unique personality today.

Hans WildsdorfThe ultimate experience of luxury and elegance.

Page 75: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

A Reputation of Resistance:Wilsdorf’s creative genius and imagination showed his sense in spectacular fashion in 1927. He decided to make an assessment of his own creativity “the Oyster” by imperiling it to an ordeal that would attest its intrinsic worth and make Rolex known as the king of watches that it is now.

A young Englishwoman, Mercedes Gleitze, equipped with an Oyster, swam across the English Channel for more than 10 hours. The best part was even after journey of more than 10 hours; the watch emerged from the water in perfect working order. A source tells us that Hans Wilsdorf announced: “The triumphant march of the Rolex Oyster around the world”.

The self-winding movement:In 1931, the world’s first meandering contraption with an unending propeller was invented by none other than Rolex. This creative system was the origin of every modern automatic watch.

The matrimony of two different materials:1933, was the year when Rolex celebrated the marriage ceremony of two different materials, gold and steel. This amalgamation which was first used by Rolex in the 1920s has since become an idiosyncratic appealing enigma of the Rolex watch.

The era of great prestige watches-1940s & 1950s:The eon of 1940s and 1950s was highly commendable for Rolex. They tossed watches of great prestige that would be worn by influential people and would very promptly become eternal masterworks of the Oyster collection.

A watch of great peculiarity-Oyster Perpetual Datejust: The year was 1945 and the Oyster Perpetual Datejust was born, it was indeed an innovative step in the watchmaking industry. It was the first self-winding wrist chronometer to indicate the date in a window on the dial. The Jubilee bracelet was especially created for it and with its fluted bezel it was instantly perceptible as an Oyster. It is the pillar of the Oyster collection. At first it was for men but later down the line it was also introduced for ladies in the following decade.

More than just time-Oyster Perpetual Day-Date:In 1956 Rolex did it again, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was ready to make its debut and again it was the first wristwatch to show more than just the time. It displayed the date and day of the week presaged out in full in a window on the dial. It is available only in platinum or in 18-carat gold and it has contained since its birth a crystal with a Cyclops lens that eases reading the date by amplifying it up to two and a half times more than its original size.

The assiduous pursuit of aptness:The escapade of Rolex and the Oyster is a continuing saga. It’s a combining of tradition, prestige and technology - a phenomenon of epic beauty, brilliance and creativity. The story does not stop, it lingers and goes on as Rolex and the Oyster will continue some of the most fascinating chapters in the history of watchmaking.

All that glitters Gold…from the mines to it´s care and key

role in the global market.

Page 77: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

For centuries, mankind has held gold above all other natural materials. Our ancestors adored it, as a status symbol and connectivity generations used it as a barter to raise and supply armies. Its role in barter

economies marked the beginning of international trade. Gold is found both close to the surface of the Earth and underground, usually mixed with other metals. Mining gold depends on the location of the gold. The process of extracting it starts with sampling ores located on the surface of a possible mining site. These ores are drilled using industrial diamond tipped drill bits to generate an ultra-hard cutting surface. The gold is then extracted by reducing the size of the large chunks of ore to sand like consistency. Cyanide solution is then added to turn the sand like particles into a watery mixture before finally being processed. Gold holds value as it is the only investment that can be used and saved at the same time. Moreover, it grows with time and never goes out of fashion. Read on to find out what makes it so special:

RarityEven though gold can be found all over the Earth, especially in the seawater, the amount that can be extracted and refined is about 125,000 tons. It may sound like a lot of gold, but it is less than two thirds of an ounce for each person alive in the world.

DurabilityGold that was recovered from ancient tombs has still retained its beauty. Gold does not rust, corrode or tarnish. Air, water, salt and acids do not affect it either. Gold can be minted into coins, irradiated, deposited as plating, drawn into fine wire and pounded into leaf without having its value diminished. It is one of the most durable substances found on earth.

UtilityThe same one ounce of pure gold that is pounded into a foil sheet covering 100 square feet can be drawn into a fine wire 50 miles long. Although pure gold is too soft to be of structural use, it can be combined with other metals for a myriad of uses such as jewelry, dentistry instruments, electronics etc.

Gold as a CommodityGold’s many appealing characteristics make it an ideal investment. There is a huge investment market for gold futures and options as well as physical gold. Gold is known as the “crisis commodity” as its value stays the same through periods of political, social and financial crises.

Why Buy Physical Gold? In times of economic turbulence and volatile stocks, physical gold provides a safe haven to investors. Physical gold will always retain its value. It is almost like a form of insurance to battle a failing economy. Even though the price of physical gold may fluctuate, the fluctuations tend to be unrelated to the fluctuations in asset prices. Investment in physical gold is less volatile. As pure gold is too soft for everyday wear, it is mixed with metals like copper, zinc, nickel and silver to give it strength and structure. Karatage, denoted by a number (ranging from 1-24) followed by the letter ‘k’ indicates how much metal in the piece of jewelry is gold with 24k being 100% gold. The color of the jewelry piece is determined by the type and percentage of each metal combined with gold. Following on page 76 are the most common types of gold:

Page 79: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Yellow GoldNatural gold is combined with a reddish copper and a greenish silver to obtain the color and signature warmth of yellow gold.

White GoldNatural gold is combined with metal alloys that are white in nature and plated with rhodium. Even though white gold is aesthetically pleasing, its rhodium plating wears off over time and re-plating may be required time and again to retain the condition of your jewelry.

Rose GoldThe combination of copper and gold creates a beautiful pinkish hue of rose gold jewelry.

Cleaning your gold jewelryTo clean your jewelry, use warm water and detergent free soap with a soft bristled brush. After taking your jewelry off, store the piece(s) in soft cloth bags or the original box to protect them from exposure.

Dubai – The city of goldDubai is a key player in the global gold market. According to bullionstreet.com, “Dubai now has about a 29 per cent market share of global gold trade with nearly 1,200 tons — worth about $41 billion.”

The world renowned Gold Souk in Dubai houses over a hundred gold shops that have been in operation since the 1940s when traders from India and Iran established their stalls in the souk. Shining and gleaming, the Gold Souk is a sight for sore eyes, especially at night. Sources estimate approximately 10 tons of gold are present at any given moment in the Gold Souk.

The UAE imports gold jewelry with designs ranging from traditional Indian to modern Italian and European. An added advantage is that there is no value added tax on gold in the UAE, which makes it a hot favorite for gold shoppers.

In addition to the Gold Souk, you can also check out stores like Damas and Marhaba – particularly for European styled jewelry whereas Joyalukkas is a popular choice for Indian designs. Other noteworthy stores are Barakat and Yasin. It wouldn’t be Dubai if it weren’t for over the top gold indulgence and this is where Purogold comes into the picture. Purogold provides 24k gold plating for iPhones, iPads, Blackberries, cars, yachts, houses and more!

The idea for Vertu dawned upon Frank Nuovo in 1998. Nuovo was highly inspired by luxury watches and jewelry and thought of incorporating their elements to create the world’s first luxury mobile phone. To execute his idea, he brought together a team of experts who researched and developed the phone. After four painstaking years of development, the Vertu Signature phone was launched in 2002 in Paris - one of the most luxurious and fashion forward cities in the world.

Vertu phones use 3G (third generation) technology that allows high speed Internet browsing allowing the phone to work almost anywhere in the world making it ideal for today’s businessman-businesswoman on the go. All wouldn’t be lost if you were to lose your Vertu mobile phone as the company has a server called “Vertu Fortress” which backs up all your data when it is entered into your phone and is easily retrievable and transferable in case of a misplacement.

One feature that truly sets Vertu apart from other phones is their “Vertu Concierge” service. Through the mere click of a button on the phone, the user is connected to a member of the team of lifestyle managers who are there to help the user out with guidance, recommendations and assistance. These members can set you up with reservations, tickets and even a plumber - menial tasks that could otherwise take up a lot of your valuable time. It doesn’t get more luxurious than a personal assistant that’s just a click away.

Currently, Vertu offers three collections of mobile phones - Vertu Signature, Vertu Ascent and Vertu Constellation; the inspiration behind these collection vary from signature watches, luxury aircrafts and magnificent sports cars. VERTU SIGNATURE Vertu Signature phones are hand-built by a single craftsman from start to finish and the craftsman’s signature (hence the name) can be found by taking the back off the phone. The signature collection is inspired by grand complication timepieces and the finest jewelry. It is available in stainless steel, gold, white gold and platinum finishes. The face of the phone is made from solid sapphire which makes it scratch proof. Moreover, 4.75 carats of rubies are used behind the keys on the keyboard, providing the keyboard with longevity.

VERTU ASCENTThe Vertu Signature is known for its inherent beauty, but the Vertu Ascent, inspired by luxury sports cars, is built for power, strength and performance. The framework of these phones is made from solid titanium, a material that is used for the protection of space shuttles. Very little can break these babies.

VERTU CONSTELLATIONFor its Constellation collection, Vertu creates classic phones that combine style and practicality. One of the most popular limited edition constellation phones is the Vertu Constellation Quest Ferrari - a collaboration between Vertu and Italian sports car giant Ferrari. All That JazzA history of Jazz music

Jazz vision is a wordless conversation between musical notes and visual expressions.

Page 87: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

“New Orleans had a great tradition of celebration. Opera, military marching bands, folk music, the blues, different types of church music, ragtime, echoes of traditional African drumming, and all of the dance styles that went with this music could be heard and seen throughout the city. When all of these kinds of music blended into one, jazz was born.” - Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz, Lincoln Center, New York.

Often referred to as ‘America’s classical music’, Jazz first originated in the early 1900’s in the American cities of New Orleans and Chicago. The core of jazz music is rooted in Native American and African music; particularly the blues, spirituals and rag times. Early jazz was

marked by “improvisation” of traditional melodies-an art perfected by one of the greatest and most influential figures in jazz history-Louis Armstrong. Nicknamed “Pops” and “Satchmo”, Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. At just thirteen years old, Armstrong was playing in concerts to life audiences. He would often create-make up music building upon the traditional melody that came to be known as improvisation-a fundamental feature of jazz music. Other notable artists in the early jazz era include Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino and Bix Beiderbecke.

By the 1920s and 1930s, jazz music had gained mainstream popularity, attracting white musicians as well. Big brass ensemble bands that played for dancing audiences and swing music dominated this era of jazz. Swinging means to be in sync with others, which is why the swing era saw the decline of improvisations in the genre of Jazz. Swing music first appeared during the Great Depression and had the power to lift the spirits of people with its upbeat liveliness. Notable artists in the swing era were orchestra leaders such as Glen Miller and Duke Ellington. Ellington was born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C. He played jazz as a teen, but later moved to New York to become a bandleader. He was one of the pioneers of the big band sound during the swing era of jazz.

During the 1930’s the white musicians started stealing jazz music from the black population and created and sold pop, watered down versions of the tracks. The black musicians wanted to make a statement to the white musicians; they wanted to create a style of jazz so intricate, complex and fast that it couldn’t be stolen from them. Hence, in the 1940s, a style of jazz called bebop was born. Bebop was almost an antidote to the swing era as it was jazz for a listening audience as opposed to the dancing audiences of swing eras. The bebop era saw greats such as Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie. Wynton Marsalis, the Artistic Director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York, said of Dizzy Gillespie, “The first time you hear Dizzy Gillespie play the trumpet, you may think that the tape was recorded at the wrong speed. He played so high, so fast, so correctly.”

One chords is fine. Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you are into jazz.

I still love the whole history of jazz. The old things sound better than ever.

Page 89: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Following the intricate and complex jazz compositions in the 1940s, the simplistic, toned down “cool jazz” of the 1950’s and lasted all through the 1960’s. The great

musicians in this era such as Miles Davis, Jerry Mulligan and Stan Getz believed in minimalism and composed with the “less is more” philosophy.

In the late 1960’s and 1970’s other music genres such as funk and rock began to show an influence on jazz. This led to fusion jazz styles such as funk jazz and rock jazz. The background of the track would be rock or funk, but the improvisations would be from a jazz perspective. From the end of 1970’s up until today, various composers have combined different kinds of jazz styles to come up with their own unique sound. Jazz is a music style that can be composed to fit any occasion. As Anaïs Nin famously wrote in The Diary of Anaïs Nin, “Jazz is the music of the body. The breath comes through brass. It is the body’s breath, and the strings’ wails and moans are echoes of the body’s music. It is the body’s vibrations which ripple from the fingers. And the mystery of the withheld theme, known to jazz musicians alone, is like the mystery of our secret life. We give to others only peripheral improvisations.”

After a 3 year love bite, Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have called it quits. Rumors of the split had been doing the rounds for a while, but it was only after Trawick’s conservatorship was disbanded that the official announcement of the split was made. Spears, 31, began dating Trawick, 41, in 2009 and got engaged in December 2011. Following the split, Spears returned

her $90,000 engagement ring to Trawick and had his name removed from her conservatorship. An insider said, “The romance was gone.” Trawick used to “put her on speakerphone so friends can hear her nagging.”

“Jason and I have decided to call off our engagement,” the 31-year-old singer said in a statement Friday, Jan. 11, 2013. “I’ll always adore him and we will remain great friends.”

Trawick stated that he wishes Spears nothing but the best. “As this chapter ends for us a new one begins,” he said. “I love and cherish her and her boys and we will be close forever.”

After keeping a low profile for almost a year, Emma Roberts and Evan Peters made their relationship official by making their first joint red carpet appearance at the Instyle and Warner Bros. after party for the 70th Annual Golden Globes in Beverly Hills Jan 13, 2013. The couple was also spotted “making out” later that evening at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower.

Roberts, 21, and Peters, 25, met during the filming of the movie Adult World, in which they costarred. They began their romantic involvement in the spring of 2012.

Not only did Roberts make an official appearance with Peters, she also introduced him to her family. The actress bumped into aunt Julia Roberts at the Help Haiti Home Gala in Beverly Hills in January 2013 while attending the event with Peters. Julia was spotted shaking hands with and hugging Evan and it even appeared as though Emma was introducing him.

On and off “it” couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have reportedly pulled the plug on their two year relationship…yes, for good this time. At a Golden Globes after-party, Gomez, the 20-year-old Spring Breakers actress was overheard saying that she was “done” with Bieber, 18, after their “awful” New Year’s vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The couple’s trip to Mexico was cut short when they got into a huge argument when Gomez found text messages from other girls on Bieber’s phone. The heated argument led to the breakup after which flew back to L.A. without Bieber this time.

Bieber caused a media stir when he was caught smoking pot just days after breaking up with Gomez. She, on the other hand, was first spotted cozying up to her Monte Carlo costar, Luke Bracey at the Golden Globes party at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower. The pair was getting super close and reportedly holding hands! Later, Selena was seen leaving the same party with Hunger Games star, Josh Hutcherson hand-in-hand too.

Vietnam is not only known for its compelling war history but it is also famous for its colorful sightseeing and striking landscapes. Peasant women and their conical hats are the signature and most inspirational datum, which are

even valued by modern age. Lan Nguyen - the Vietnamese artist is offering a glimpse of her roots and her country’s colorful beauty through her masterpieces. Via her paintings, she is depicting the scenes of her beautiful homeland, its people and its spirit. Most of her work is done in acrylics and oils. Her paintings personify the romanticism of life and people of Vietnam. Her artworks portray the feel of innocence and pureness of the soul. The use of vibrant colors which swish across the canvas are the most captivating part.

“I paint mostly about Vietnamese landscapes; people, and especially young ladies, in traditional outfits; the festivals; and the everyday life of people in Vietnam. In my work, I use mostly simple colors and subjects. I try to bring out the sounds, the feelings and the energy of the life in Vietnam.” - says the artist.

Team Eveningz had the privilege to sit down with her and we were fortunate enough to have a prevue of Lan’s dreams and a peep into her warm heart.

EveningZ: Who is Lan Nguyen?Lan: Lan Nguyen is a very sensitive person but very strong and positive at the same time. I started painting when I was about 12 years old. I simply love art and have always wanted to be an artist and making paintings is more than a hobby to me. It’s my passion and incarnation of my desire.

EveningZ: What is art for you?Lan: Art is creativity, and it takes courage…through art, an artist sees herself and shares that vision with others. Art to me is another face of daily life. I love what Van Gogh said: “I dream my painting, and I paint my dream.”

EveningZ: Where do you get your inspiration?Lan: I paint people and landscapes. Wherever I go and whomever I meet, it leads to new artistic ideas. It’s not about the portrait; it’s about people, culture, behavior, gathering and exchanging.

EveningZ: How do you create your master pieces?Lan: Before I paint, I have a plan, and I think about it over and over many times. Sometimes it takes years until it really comes down to paint on canvas. I often draw an image first; there’s nothing better than to draw what you see or have seen. This helps me capture and then refresh the best of my memories before I turn them into a painting. And I always love to be alone in my studio, with my cat, when I make paintings.

EveningZ: Do you think the U.A.E plays an important role in your career?Lan: I see in Dubai an opportunity for everything, as the UAE is a young country and is still learning about itself. I am very grateful that I found by surprise that Dubai and the Middle East in general have so much to offer, to share and to learn from. Yes, no place is perfect, and that helps make it more interesting.

EveningZ: What advice do you have for upcoming stars?Lan: If you love what you do, it will love you back.

Goinaz Fathi

A trained calligrapher, Fathi has turned the literary art-form on its head by skillfully transforming known language into form and composition. She first discovered calligraphy while studying graphic design at Tehran’s Azad University, which she later left to train for six years at the Calligraphy Association of Iran. Practicing the script for over seven hours a day eventually paid off-she was the first woman to win an award for Ketabat (a genre of calligraphy)-but she soon tired of the discipline’s rules and regulations. Hence, she created a new form of expression in her paintings; an imaginary language deeply rooted in Persian tradition while simultaneously hinting at a social renaissance. Her paintings carry traces of meaning that have no known coded alphabet. The strength of her work stems from the drive to express emotions that cannot be pinned down into words. Fathi’s works succeed where language fails. She currently lives and works in Iran.

Sahand Hesamiyan

It is true that Iran has produced great and innovative artists with strong and stout perception of art and imagination. Sahand Hesamiyan creates artistic sculptures; he graduated from the University of Tehran with a degree in BFA in Sculpture. His primary inspiration is derived from Islamic architecture and now his work is extended to the intense affiliation between angles, symmetry and structure beyond the sheer reflection and reiteration of form. His work is not only the work of art and welded sculptures but in fact his well soldered steel sculptures are the depiction of large vibrant intellectual forms that friskily defy the ogler’s perception of Islamic art.

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian

An Iranian artist exhibits her strong connection to the history of Iranian reverse glass and mirror mosaics. It’s a dexterity which is inherited from father to son. Her drudgery brings together the folklore and the unconventional to formulate flamboyant and geometric motif.

In the late 60s Farmanfarmaian started experimenting with acclimatizing and mingling of vintage methods of reverse-glass painting, mirror mosaics and Iranian design with a present intangible expressionism and simplicity. The results are geometric and of a thoughtful medley with shard-like forms of color and light cut up through wreckages of mirror.

Art enables us to find and lose ourselves at the same time. -Thomas Merton

Art is something which soothes our soul. It’s an amazing reverie to live in colors. The U.A.E. is a place where culture and art is highly appreciated and truly valued. There’s one fact that’s indeed very sad and true that nowadays we all are living in the

era of high technology decorated with gadgets and machinery and our lives have become very structured and robotic. In that kind of hectic lifestyle and routine to see and to live art is something precious like “desert rain”. As Pablo Picasso said and I quote:

Dubai’s many talents come to life through paintings, photography and calligraphy; this month, don’t forget the art of acting. The biggest ten-minute theatre festival in the world is set to explode on to the Dubai theatre scene when Emirates

NBD, Marina Home and 7DAYS present the first ever Short+Sweet Dubai at DUCTAC in the Mall of the Emirates from Thursday February 21st until March 2nd (you may want to think of running to get your ticket as you finish reading your Eveningz!) and features over 200 local actors, writers and directors as they bring to life 50 plays, all ten minutes or less. For the first time ever in Dubai, Short+Sweet will bring together all of the leading local theatre groups in one theatre in one night.

Companies to perform at the festival include The Human Spirit Project, Drama Dubai Workshops, Dubai Drama Group, Backstage, Theatrewallas, Star Too, Third Half Theatre and OpenThinking. The festival will also feature visiting Chennai theatre group, Stray Factory.

The cream of the crop of local actors will also be on show with Dubai’s leading local actor Dana Dajani gracing the Festival as well as Brook Butterworth, Jassim Lone, Liz Hadaway, Tania Siddiqi, Assem Kroma, Toby Mason and Eric Dury.

Top local directors involved in the festival include Kemsley Dickinson, Sol Abiad, Brent Jenkins, Gautam Goenka, Phil Ridley, Sanjeev Dixit, Mohammed Rahmo, Anish Rao, Nina Hein, Priyanka Johri, Jamal Iqbal, Naima Thompson, Phil Ridley and Sadia Noori.

And local writers to have their work showcased at the festival include Hananah Zaheer, Marie and Frank Dullaghan, Clifford and Jana Single, Vinod Poojary, Iyad Mourtada, Ankita Rao Manikantan, Shina Ahmad and Enzo Messina.

No less than 35 local playwrights will have works presented while the international flavor of Short+Sweet is also on show with six plays from Australia, three from India and one each from New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and the USA. Abu Dhabi is also represented among the scripts on show.

Leading local schools are also featured with high quality offerings from the American School of Dubai, Dubai American Academy and the National Charity School (Dubai), performing in Arabic. The National Charity School (Dubai)‘s participation in the Festival has been generously supported by Emirates NBD who facilitated workshops with the Festival Director, Alex Broun, and students at the school to help prepare a number of plays to present at the Festival.

Many of the artists will also display multiple skills with Kemsley Dickinson acting in his own play and Dana Dajani, co-starring, as well as co-writing and directing, the hip hop inspired MiC Prophecies with local hip hop star Jibberish.

Short+Sweet Dubai Festival Director Alex Broun, who has launched Short+Sweet Festivals throughout Australia and India, New Zealand and Singapore said he was incredibly excited about what audiences would see on stage over the next two weeks.

“Dubai has never seen anything like this” said Broun. “It’s a chance to see all the best local talent on the same stage on the same night.”

Page 110: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Eveningz | 107 | Art & Culture

“Local audiences are regularly presented with touring versions of some great international theatre but Short+Sweet Dubai is about giving local writers, actors and directors a chance to shine – and I think people will be surprised just how high quality the local artists are.”

Broun said the response to Short+Sweet from the local theatre community was extraordinary, far exceeding expectations.

“When we first talked about Short+Sweet in Dubai people said we’d be lucky to get 20 directors, we got 50. They said we’d be lucky to get ten script entries, we got over 100. And they said we’d be hard pressed to summon up 50 actors, we have over 150.”

“The excellence of the local visual arts, film and literature communities are well known but this is a chance to put the theatre community in the spotlight. And best of all thanks to the Short+Sweet format you’ll get a chance to experience ten plays in just one night.” Director of DUCTAC Joseph Fowler was also delighted to be hosting the first ever Short+Sweet Dubai.

“DUCTAC presents a world class programme of performing and visual arts” said Fowler, “and we are proud to provide a platform for local theatre artists through Short+Sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing the work on show during the festival. We’re all set for an incredibly exciting two weeks.”

The Al Habtoor group requires little to no introduction; it has been the backbone of several of Dubai’s biggest projects which assisted in putting the emirate on the world map including the world famous Burj Al Aab, the Madinat Jumeirah, and the group’s Al Habtoor Grand in the Dubai Marina. The group is best

known for its footprint in construction, real estate, hospitality, insurance, automotive, education, and publishing sectors. With such a vast array of successful undertakings and attention to the Al Habtoor name, one can’t help but wonder about the legacy behind it all. We close the question mark for you and bring an exclusive interview with a man of vision, achievements and goals: Mohammed Al Habtoor.

1. How would you describe your achievements?

The achievements we’ve had in the Al Habtoor Group locally and internationally are the vision of our Chairman, Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor and the supporting team that we have in our head office. We succeeded in bringing the Al Habtoor Group to a global level.

2. How does it feel to be a part of such a prominent family? Is it a big responsibility to maintain your father’s legacy?

I have been with my Father, Mr Khalaf Al Habtoor, everyday for the last 23 years getting to know his way of work and making sure that the trend of the Al Habtoor Group will be followed.

3. When you started your entrepreneurial journey, did you experience some kind of obstacles and hardships, what keeps you encouraged? (If yes)

Nothing is easy. Business is very competitive. You have to have the right decision in what you do. There were lots of obstacles in life and in business but a successful person does not get discouraged with obstacles. They try again and make sure that he moves to the next level.

4. Who–what inspires you?

My Father, Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor and Sheikh Mohammed’s numerous achievements in the last 40 years, which is truly a very short time.

5. How did you get into Polo?

In 1998, I was invited to watch a polo match in Dubai and it all started from there. I liked the game as it was very challenging and as I was already doing horseback riding, I didn’t have a hard time learning the sport.

6. What is the most challenging part of being a Polo player?

The challenging part lies in that it is not easy to win all the time and at the same time losing. Also, to build a Polo organization is a little bit costly. You also cannot play all the time as it is seasonal not only in Dubai, but in England, Argentina, Spain and the US. You have to travel with your team and have horses available to you everywhere.

7. Polo is the oldest team sport. To many, it is just a game, but to those who adopt it as a serious sport it becomes a passion and a discipline. Would you say this discipline has somehow affected your drive and personality at work?

I don’t think so as I am a team player. I have always been a team player in the office even before I started playing polo.

Eveningz | 111 | Lifestyle

Page 115: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

8. Saying you live and breathe Polo would be an understatement. How has living the Polo lifestyle made your life different than the average Joe’s?

I love polo. I talk about polo everyday with my team, polo managers, and my friends who are both unfamiliar and familiar with polo. Since I started playing polo, everything has become more interesting as I have met lots of entrepreneurs, businessmen, and officials through Polo...I can honeslty say that Polo is a social

sport.

9. It’s indeed clear and unquestionable that you are in love with each and every one of your horses but which one of them do you think is your lucky charm?

I have lots of horses in my stable. It depends as I have between 80-100 horses. There are horses which I play all the time, some of the horses I give to my professional polo players, some I haven’t even used until now. But among all

the horses, Turqasa and Birra are my favorites. I always score when I use them.

10. When you aren’t in your office or on the polo field, what curious activities do you turn to for fun in the UAE and abroad?

Gathering with friends, having coffee, going out for dinner when I am not having dinner at home.

11. What three things can’t you live without?

Travel, Polo and business.

12. What advice would you like to give to the U.A.E. youth in regards to the betterment of their career and country’s prestige?

My advice to all the UAE youth is that there is no limit in anything, be it in terms of business or employment. Always aim ahead of your thinking and do not be contented on what you do everyday. Try to do more activities and most

importantly, sports as this will help make you healthy and fit.

Corporate Etiquette: The Competitive Edge Ingredient

By:

Cris

tina

Maa

Page 117: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

As this new year gets into full swing, businesses are looking for new ways to increase their competitive edge. Corporate etiquette may be just the ticket.

Stefanie Ost, CEO and founder of SO Famous, firmly believes business etiquette is one of the key investments a company can make. “Corporate etiquette deals with how individuals and companies interact with their clients, customers, staff and key stakeholders. This is important because it sets the tone for the relationship,” she said.

“Placing emphasis on business interactions and setting high personal standards gives individuals and companies an edge over their competitors because they will be seen as more professional and therefore more capable.”

SO Famous launched its corporate etiquette courses in February in partnership with the Finishing Academy UK. The courses are taught by Penny Edge - founder and director of the Finishing Academy - who has been in the industry for more than 25 years, training everyone from doctors and lawyers to footballers’ wives and huge multinational corporations.

The courses included a variety of topics including boardroom etiquette such as handshaking, introductions and correct

forms of address; reaching rapport with clients and cementing business relationships; public speaking; making a lasting first impression; promoting yourself in the workplace; networking; CV writing and interviewing skills; neuro linguistic programming; communication etiquette; table manners; body language; and appropriate business attire.

Ost said there was no limit to how corporate etiquette could help businesspeople and companies get ahead. “Corporate etiquette may influence the way a businessperson uses electronic communication, the color or style of clothing worn, or the way he or she shakes hands. It’s all about creating the right impression and following through on that.”

“On a large company scale, corporate etiquette may determine how front-of-house staff at a luxury hotel greet their guests, while a university leaver may use corporate etiquette to dress appropriately during interviews to help land a dream job.”

The courses suit business individuals with an interest in improving their business relationships and enhancing their career prospect; they can be offered to individuals and groups, or tailored to meet a company’s specific needs.

Yachting not only enhances the luxurious culture of the UAE, but also pampers all the needs we would definitely miss on a plane journey. Here’s what Mr. Abbassi has to say regarding the rich ocean experiences that are so worthy this season….

Lifestyle | Eveningz | 116

Page 120: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

1. What according to you makes Yachting so exquisite and phenomenal in Dubai?

The Arabic culture has a passion with the Sea for Centuries, yachting has arrived in the region servicing all wakes of life, you don’t have to necessarily be wealthy to enjoy. There is nothing like cruising around the Palm Jumeira and the Iconic Burj Al Arab and viewing the world’s most impressive skyline from the Sea. Equally, at night the sights are impressive.

2. What is the best part about taking care of a yacht firm? And what made you get into the business?

You have to have the passion for the Sea … running a Yacht firm is challenging, it is a fun business, there are not many businesses that give you the satisfaction of giving pleasure to almost everyone that comes across your path.

3. The holiday season is soaring and most people love experiencing water cruises, what kind of yacht would you suggest for families, couples, events and tourists specifically?

In recent years Emirates and expats alike, have discovered the joy of being out at sea either for sight-seeing, fishing or simply to enjoy time off at sea. We recognize that most people are budget conscious, just like cars yachts are built to different standards…our customers generally are not educated to what the Rolls Royce or Bentley of the Sea is. Therefore we tend to put our customers into good value for yachts. Unless it’s a special request for a long range offshore trip we then tend to find Pedigree vessels which are transatlantic capable. For our more adventurous clients we arrange tailor-made packages in the Maldives and Seychelles Islands which are only a few hours away by plane.

Eveningz | 117 | Lifestyle

Page 121: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

4. What has been your most favorite Yacht ever since you’ve been in the UAE and why? Could you name one? if many, then why?

Sheik Mohammad’s yacht Dubai, it’s one of the largest yachts in the world... Seeing is believing and not many people will understand unless they have seen her! I have been fortunate enough to have been on board several times. She’s truly magnificent!

5. How did you develop your love for yachting?

After having spent more than 22 years working for an airline in the US, I wanted to continue to work with all of the things that I love and enjoy, Airplanes, Exotic Cars and Yachts. Yachting was an extension of the days when I was an exotic car dealer in Texas, Florida and Dubai. I finally made a decision to exclusively focus only on the yachting business, luxury chartering and haven’t looked back! This is a business that I thoroughly enjoy! My office is overlooking one of the best views of the Dubai Marina where much of my time is spent.

6. What is-are the best choices of Yacht for this Holiday season? Could you name a few?

Really this would depend on the occasion, number of people, budget and how long they want to be out? There’s no Best Choice... If you are fortunate enough to be able to choose there are many choices that are available.... 4Yacht Arabia offers a wide selection of yachts to charter, they are ;28’ boat that accommodate up to 7 people up to a 300’ yacht that can accommodate over 250 guests at a time . At 4yacht Arabia there is no limit as to what we can offer for the enjoyment of our clients....

they can explore the charismatic towns and cities and learn more about the fascinating culture of the UAE and Oman.”

‘Ferrari Racing Days’ Makes Middle East Debut

Yas Marina Circuit Abu Dhabi to Host Three-Day Event

Eveningz | 127 | Lifestyle

Page 131: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

A Ferrari is everybody’s car. - Tim Allen

Ferrari announced this February 19th the Middle East debut of ‘Ferrari Racing Days’, promising thrilling track action for owners of the non-competitive Formula one single seater and XX cars, and a F1 Exhibition open on Saturday 23rd for the public.

To be held from March 7-9 2013, the wheel-to-wheel extravaganza that will witness a total of 17 cars navigating the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi is organised by the Ferrari Corse Clienti (Customer Racing) department.

Exclusively designed for F1 Clienti, the event will provide enthusiasts from the region with the first-ever chance to view in action the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Asia Pacific series.

Featuring the 458 - the mid-rear V8 Berlinetta derived from the 458 Italia and the fifth model used by Ferrari in its one-make racing series, the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, now in its 20th year, is highly popular as it brings to the race track novices as well as experienced competitive drivers.

The amateurs have Coppa Shell with a separate classification and final title, while the experts race in the Trofeo Pirelli for the coveted trophy. This balance in the races avoids a one-sided contest and allows expert competitors as well as gentleman drivers to participate on equal terms.

Commenting on the announcement, Giulio Zauner, General Manager, Ferrari Middle East and Africa, said: “The Ferrari Racing Days is held at prominent circuits around the world equipped with the latest safety solutions. We are delighted to host its Middle East debut in the Yas Marina circuit, which has witnessed four Grand Prix.”

Lifestyle | Eveningz | 128

Page 132: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

“An overwhelming number of Ferrari owners from the region and across the world have signed up for the event. Hosting the Racing Days at this classic venue reiterates Ferrari’s commitment to our exclusive clients in the region. We are confident the event will set a benchmark for motorsport activities in the Middle East.”

A unique exhibition from one of Scuderia Ferrari’s official test driver, Marc Gene, will serve as a key highlight of the event. Gene is an accomplished driver having raced in several world-class events including Formula 3.

In addition to showcasing twelve 599XX and two FXX, the XX Program will feature three F1. ‘Ferrari Racing Days’ will see owners of the exclusive models put their machines through the paces at the Ferrari Club Challenge.

Kicking off on Thursday 7 March at 3:00pm and running to Saturday 9 March until 11.45pm, the public will have access to the event from 3:00pm on Saturday. Tickets are priced for entry into the grand stand at AED25 per person and children below 11 years enter free.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will also be a participant at the Ferrari Racing Days to celebrate the marque’s passion for racing. The world’s first and only Ferrari-themed park will kick-start momentum to the ‘Ferrari Racing Days’ from March 1 at the ‘Scuderia Challenge’. In a contest held over seven days, the fastest on each day will win a ‘Hot Lap’ on the Yas Marina Circuit - an experience of true performance, control and exhilaration in a Ferrari driven by a professional driver.

For every Ferraristi, the event is a thrilling must-attend. In September 2012 at the Silverstone circuit in the UK, a Guinness World Record of the largest parade of 964 Ferrari cars was set. In a three car grid, the car trail extended 3.66miles on the Grand Prix circuit. Previous record holders for such feats include Silverstone with 385 cars in 2007 and Fuji circuit with 490 Ferrari cars in 2008.

Worood: a company with a heart

Page 141: Eveningz Magazine Issue 15

Worood Intraflora LLC, established in 1989, has successfully created a unique retail concept in flower designs and arrangements. Over the years, the company has been known for its unique and

bespoke designs conceptualized by renowned in-house creative designers. As well as creating the Gulf’s leading luxury floral brand, Worood Intraflora LLC has also diversified into event management, showcasing its passion for perfection by applying its unparalleled expertise into creating innovative designs with detailed execution.

Worood was recently presented with an Excellence Award by the Arab Organization for Social Responsibility, in recognition of its outstanding contributions to society in the United Arab Emirates. At an exclusive ceremony on December 15th, 2012, at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, private and public institutions from across the Arab world were honored for their achievements in contributing to the welfare of society. Mr. Pierre Mouzarkel, President of the Arab Organization for Social Responsibility, presented the award to Ms. Maryam Al Noori, Managing Director of Worood.

Worood was nominated for the award following a thorough evaluation of its role in social responsibility in 2012, with emphasis on its own breast cancer awareness campaign ‘The Pink Rose’, its efforts in raising awareness towards Autism and Down syndrome in the UAE and frequent contributions to youth and philanthropic foundations. Ms. Al Noori highlighted her company’s strong desire to promote a positive spirit in the UAE and inspire others to follow suit. “Since the company’s inception in 1989, we have always dedicated ourselves to giving back to society. Our community is the heart and soul of our country, and we always hope that the love and emotion we put into our floral creations and initiatives bring joy, hope and pride to those who need it most.

We trust that by receiving this prestigious award, our endeavors will encourage others to follow in our footsteps and work to create a better society for our wonderful citizens.” Worood’s ‘The Pink Rose’ campaign encouraged its social media audience to dedicate messages of support to those affected by breast cancer through its Facebook page and website. These elegant messages were hand-delivered to thousands of patients across the UAE alongside graceful pink roses. Maryam Al-Noori said in statement, “We initiated this campaign to ensure that patients themselves understand that they are not alone in their fight and that survivors are admired for their strength in overcoming breast cancer. Women are so important to us, and they should not be afraid or shy to openly discuss and research the issues surrounding breast cancer – it could truly save their lives one day.” To ensure maximum exposure, The Pink Rose campaign tied up with numerous entities in the UAE this month, distributed roses at events in partnership with Dubai Hospital, International Business Women’s Group, Brest Friends, Solidari Tea Arabia, World Trade Club, Dubai Business Women’s Council, Wafi Shopping Mall and Saudi German Hospital.

In addition to the Pink Rose Campaign, the company also created key partnerships with the Dubai Autism Centre and the UAE Down Syndrome Association, sending positive energy to children through the vibrancy of their flowers. Further contributions by Worood involved recognizing the empowerment of young women in the UAE along with providing support to students and young Emirati citizens in their initiatives to better the community for all. Worood, through its measures to give back to the community, offers inspiration and guidance to those who need it most.

Ingredients: 1. 350-500g porcini (and/or other fresh wild mushrooms), cleaned

and sliced2. 1 medium onion, finely chopped3. 125g butter4. 350g Carnaroli rice (Acquarello)5. 1 litre good stock6. At least 110g fresh parmesan, or vegetarian parmesan-style

grating cheese7. 1 tbsp olive oil8. salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preparation method:

In a large pan bring the stock almost to boil and keep hot on a very low flame. In another pan melt the butter and sweat the onion until softened but not brown. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for a few more minutes. Add the rice, stir well and cook until well-coated and slightly translucent. Add a ladle of hot stock and let it simmer gently until absorbed by the rice. Add another, and so on, until the rice is cooked (15-20 minutes). As a general rule for risottos, you need four times as much water as rice, by volume. And the rice is done when tender but still just a tiny bit chalky in the middle. Stir in the olive oil, remaining butter and a couple of spoonfuls of grated parmesan. Serve at once with the rest of the parmesan on the table.
