How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My main product and ancillaries

Video

Poster Magazine review

ImageEleanor Turner, the protagonist throughout the short film in evidently the main feature in the video, poster and magazine. It’s clear as the poster and magazine both show photos of just her and these are actually shots taken from the short film itself. Having the main character alone on the poster and magazine shows the effectiveness of the ancillaries and how they work well with the actual production as they don’t deceive the audience. This adds to the continuity of the overall production and shows how her performance is a crucial part of the short film. Both the photos on the magazine review and the poster show Eleanor at the window, an important scene in the short film as it’s when she realises the time, reflects back on her life and decides to call her daughter, Lottie. Therefore I felt like this would be a good scene to use to create clear connections between my ancillaries and main production.

Colour Scheme The colour scheme between my production and ancillaries are all quite clearly linked. I decided I wanted to make the shots in Eleanor's office quite neutral, as shown by the colours in the office and her choice of outfit. This was to build a contrast with the shots at her house when Lottie is wearing much brighter colours signifying the differences between them. However, as Eleanor is the main feature of the film I used her for the poster and magazine review, sticking with the neutral colouring. This is shown as I stuck to plain black writing for the poster, not creating anything too bright and colourful which fits in well with the short film. Similarly with the magazine review, I used a very light purple to add some colour but not to ruin the effect of the neutral colours and lighting used throughout.

LightingLighting is key feature throughout the short film as it’s used the create an emotional and nostalgic effect. This is shown in the scene when Eleanor is looking out of the window, talking about how her life has changed for the better just as the sun starts to shine through the window. This is an important part of the short film as it sums up the message and draws the audience in. I have used photos from this scene in both my ancillary tasks which I feel shows the correlation between the tasks and how they all combine effectively.

ConclusionOverall I feel like the combination between my ancillaries and main production is very effective. The ancillaries work well together presenting the main features, characters and themes throughout the short film without ruining any of the storyline. Equally, they fit well with the main production as they follow the same neutral, calm before the storm effect.
