Making the 9 Panes

I took a still of the frame in Adobe Premiere Pro

I then saved the image to a file in my user area

I then copied the still frames into Photoshop and put them in order with a corresponding number

Analysis of Panes

1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals

As the artist sings the lyrics “Baby in our wildest moments” (1:55 – 2:00) this panning mid/two shot, accomplished with a Steadicam appears. I felt this shot captured the essence of the lyrics as we cut abruptly from a steadily held shot of the artist performing in a dimly lit, empty pub to this spontaneous, brightly light and energetic shot. The abrupt transition of the shot helps to symbolise the “wildest moment” which is between the artist and his girlfriend which he refers to as “Baby”. The fast pan and swaying motion of the Steadicam create an energy and wildness to the shot again synergising with the lyrics. By having the two

shot we also emphasis the word “our” in the lyrics. The viewer can see the moment is wild but intimate and personal between two people. The moment does not belong to the artist alone. In conjunction to this the shot is relatively short, emphasising the fleeting nature of the “wildest moment” whilst the natural sunlight illuminating the couples face and the green pasture that they spin on; helping link the connotations of nature through the lyrics “wildest” which is synonymous with wilderness and nature to the natural and wild relationship and fleeting moment the couple is sharing.

2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented

I felt a record company would want our artist Jack Butler to be represented how he is in this shot. The warm tone to the shot as well as the artist in a comfortable surroundings holding a guitar helps represent the artist as comfortable with his music as well as approachable for fans. The jumper along with the hat give the artist a natural, unforced, Indy feel to his image, creating a softer look than some artists such as Jake Bugg or Miles

Kane, but more approachable – more of a Tom Odell. As well as this, our artist looks relatively attractive which a record company would use to market to the feminine demographic of their target audience. As well as this, in this shot he takes up 50% of the frame whilst his guitar takes up 20 to 25% of the frame connoting that the artist should be seen as synonymous with his music. The shot allows the artist to be seen as down to earth as he is not surrounded by luxury but in a comfortable setting surrounded by the things he loves. His music and his girlfriend. This creates a likeability to the artist through this shot which is ultimately how a record c ompany would want their artist to be represented as to market them appropriately.

3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre

I felt this mid shot illustrated our videos use of our chosen genre: Indie Folk. The Indy Folk genre has key elements that are exemplified in this shot. The instrument most heavily used in the Indy Folk genre is the guitar which our Artist uses and the guitar is featured heavily throughout our video as an instrument being used like in the shot and a prop. As well as this, in the Indy Folk genre the artist is usually relatively young and is singing the song live in the video. As well as this the leathery casual look of our artists coupled with the harsh light catching one side of his face. This again helps to highlight the

videos and artists chosen genre as Indy Folk songs usually have a darker pallet for the performance aspect of the video whilst opting for a lighter tone during narrative videos.

4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference

This still extreme long shot highlights the artist entering “The Archers” pub located in brick lane. This was used to highlight the artists London based nature and as a local artist this would endear him to fans who recognise the pub. As well as this this shot references the opening of Jake Bugg’s Video for the single “Broken” where we see Jake Bugg about to enter a rowdy American bar. We juxtaposed the video by having an empty British pub to show our artist as very local and his music being extremely personal and internalised.

5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera

In this mid shot we used a Steadicam to accomplish a smooth tracking shot. As our actress Amelie stood up and walked closer to the sea we walked alongside her with the camera. We used this camera movement to both highlight the aesthetic beauty of the location as the beach huts stretch into the distance wrapping around her in the background whilst allowing the light to catch the front of her face. This allowed us to emphasize through the camera movement the steady peace

within the relationship at that point in the video to our audience which would later become unsettle and explosive.

6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

In this close up we used an uncovered harsh light to illuminate one side of our actors face allowing for the artist to have a golden outline to the darkened side of his face. We also had a dim light with a Matte-box to diffuse the light to give the darker side of his face some light allowing for a darker contrast on our artists Jaw line. This helped create a darker more sombre tone to the performance aspect of the video allowing for a more clear juxtaposition between his narrative thoughts and the performance of the song.

7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene

In this close-up we highlighted some trinkets in the beach hut. We chose to lower the f-stop in our camera allowing more light into the lenses, giving us a shallower depth of field. We wanted this shallow depth of field to give the shot a soft dream-like quality. For our audience, we needed to establish, that these where the images playing in our artist’s mind during the opening of the video; hence why we choose to fragment the shots by intercutting trinkets in between

our artist walking to the pub. As well as this, we chose to highlight the blue boat trapped between the red boats,

Page 5: Evaluation activity 1

to show our artist as feeling isolated, which worked quite effectively when used in conjunction with the empty pub he is going to. This prop essentially adds to the overall arc of the narrative going from a peaceful relationship to a wild outburst of emotion, causing a fleeting state of isolation.

8. a shot which you feel demonstrates something which shows you have watched other music videos

Two music videos we watched from an artist within the Indy Folk genre was Jake Bugg’s “Broken” and “Two fingers”. In both videos the viewer sees Jake Bugg walking with his guitar. In “Two fingers” it is strapped to his back and he is walking in a lit urban setting with a hoody, whilst in “Broken” the guitar is in a case as he walks through a rowdy bar’s car park blanketed by night wearing a leather jacket. We chose to incorporate the walking with the guitar in

our video, borrowing an aspect of Jake Bugg’s image from the video to “Broken” in the form of the leather jacket and cased guitar whilst being inspired by the urban setting in his video for “Two fingers”. This tracking mid shot allows the audience to see the guitar case, the leather jacket and the lighter urban setting, allowing them to recognise our artist as a part of the Indy Folk genre and pertains to certain elements found in Jake Bugg’s videos.

9. a shot which you feel demonstrates something which shows you have watched other music videos

Outside of our genre of music we watched several music videos with similar narratives involving couples. Two videos we watched were “Taylor Swift ft Ed Sheeran – Everything has changed” and “Arcade Fire – The suburbs”. In the Taylor Swift video we see a young boy serenading a young girl with an acoustic guitar whilst in the Arcade Fire video we see a young couple in each other’s arms. We wanted to merge the two ideas and thought that this close up in a dimly lit setting as the camera

slowly pans downwards shows how we were inspired by the two videos to create this intimate shot.
