Evaluating Solutions
Future Problem Solving Training
Steps 4 and 5
There is a detailed description of each step in the booklet “Future Problem Solving Student Guide Workbook”
I’ll put the page number you can refer to at the top of the page.
So we can see one example from the beginning, I’ll use some of what we did in previous Power Points.
Remember the
Ant and the Grasshopper?
Steps One through Five
Step One: See Page 8
9. How can we get the grasshopper to value storing food?10. How can we teach the ant more diplomacy? Kindness? Tact? Understanding?11. How can we get the grasshopper to visualize winter without food?12. How can we get the grasshopper to understand the shelf-life of food?13. How can we get the grasshopper to find winter food?14. How can we get the grasshopper to dialogue with other insects?15. How can we help the grasshopper find kinder friends.16. How can we help the grasshopper understand the welfare system?17. How can we get the grasshopper to raid the ant’s supplies?18. How can we create simulation game so the grasshopper would get the idea
before almost dying?19. How can we make sure the grasshopper doesn’t see eating ants so he can die
in peace?20. How can we teach the grasshopper more about life cycles so he would know
how grasshoppers differ from ants and not get his hopes up for his kind?
Step Two: See Pages 10-11
15. How can we help the grasshopper find kinder friends.
The Challenge:15. How can we help the grasshopper find kinder friends.
Condition Phrase:Because there is no way the ant is going to share with the grasshopper, and because ants would rather give advise than teach the poor grasshopper their ways…
Stem:
How might we…
KVP:
help the grasshopper find kinder friends.
Purpose:
So that he won’t starve to death.
Step Two: Altogether
Because there is no way the ant is going to share with the grasshopper, and because ants would rather give advise than teach the poor grasshopper their ways, how might we help the grasshopper find kinder friends so that he won’t starve to death.
A. Throw a party but invite no ants.B. Teach the grasshopper the
language of the spiders.C. Give him an reversed periscope
with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.
D. Have him read Charlotte's Web so he can learn how to be friendly.
E. Teach him a song about friendship so he can keep his goal in his mind.
Step Three: See Pages 12-13
Step Four: See Page 14All of these ideas look good, but we need to select one to work on. There are better ways to select criteria in the FPS Guide Workbook.
1. Which idea will cost the least?
2. Which idea will most people accept?
3. Which idea might have good side effects?
4. Which idea is the easiest to use?
5. Which idea is most likely to work?
Step Five: See Page 15
The next slide has a chart with the criteria and my five solutions. If you want to get practice on this step, print that chart and fill in each box with the numbers you think fit best. Then look at the rest of this Power Point to see how I filled it in.
Rank them from 1 to 5, with 5 being The best.
Step Five: See Page 15
The Ant and the Grasshopper Step Four Criteria to the Right Step Three Ideas Below
A. Throw a party but invite no ants.
B. Teach the grasshopper the language of the spiders.
C. Give him a reversed periscope with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.
D. Have him read Charlotte's Web so he can learn how to be friendly.
E. Teach him a song about friendship so he can keep his goal in his mind.
Step Five: See Page 15
If you are finished with your answers or just want to see what I wrote so it makes better sense, proceed to the next slide.
You don’t need to give
your reasons. I did so that you could see inside of my head.
The Ant and the Grasshopper Step Four Criteria to the Right Step Three Ideas Below 1.Which idea will cost the least?
A. Throw a party but invite no ants.
Decorations, Food, Party Favors,
Announcements: $20 = 3
B. Teach the grasshopper the language of the spiders. Books, a Tutor, Time: $100 = 2
C. Give him a reversed periscope with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.
Pay the inventor to create the design and a
factory to produce it: $1000 = 1
D. Have him read Charlotte's Web so he can learn how to be friendly. The Charlotte’s Web book: about $5 = 4
E. Teach him a song about friendship so he can keep his goal in his mind. Find the song on-line: $0 = 5

2.Which idea will most insects accept?
A. Throw a party but invite no ants. All but the ants might accept = 1
B. Teach the grasshopper the language of the spiders.
The spiders would like that but the grasshopper doesn’t
want to work that hard = 3
C. Give him a reversed periscope with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.
The worms would like that but there are fewer worms
than spiders= 2
D. Have him read Charlotte's Web so he can learn how to be friendly. The spiders would like that = 4
E. Teach him a song about friendship so he can keep his goal in his mind. No one would care because he has a good voice = 5

A. Throw a party but invite no ants.
Many insects might become friends
= 3
B. Teach the grasshopper the language of the spiders.
He might convince spiders to stop
eating grasshoppers = 5
C. Give him a reversed periscope with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.
Worms will have a reason besides
the rain to surface = 1
D. Have him read Charlotte's Web so he can learn how to be friendly.
He might also learn to help friends (like Charlotte), not just get help
from them (like Templeton) = 2

He might use other songs and become a goal oriented
grasshopper = 4

A. Throw a party but invite no ants. It is more work to read a book that party =3
B. Teach the grasshopper the language of the spiders. It take a long time to learn a language = 1
C. Give him a reversed periscope with speakers so he can see worms and invite them up for a chat.

Because of the grasshopper’s talents, learning a short
song is much easier than throwing a party = 4
