Developed by IMCA SMEs, Bulletins will be issued 3-4 times each year to

provide prompt Lessons Learned to IMCA members and the wider DP

user community

• received 24 reports so far this year, 8 categorised as incidents, 15 undesired

events and 1 DP downtime/observation.

• One incident of particular note concerns a vessel which suffered a partial loss

of power due to a PMS fault which had not been identified by the design

approval and commissioning process despite these having been done in

accordance with recommended practices.

COMMON POWER BUS ASSURANCE - IMCA INFORMATION NOTE

The common bus configuration should offer equivalent dependability to

a more conventional separated power distribution arrangement

How is this established?

IMCA neither advocates nor precludes any method of establishing this

dependability

The method needs to be suitable and sufficient

COMMON POWER BUS

• Run fewer engines

• Engines may operate closer to optimum efficiency reducing fuel use and emissions

• Less engine maintenance (from running fewer engines, less low load operation)

• Potentially more flexibility for performing system maintenance (this may be especially attractive for MODUs)

• The redundancy concept is complex

• Potentially vulnerable to poor commissioning, verification and testing

• Potentially vulnerable to hidden failures and design flaws

• Costs of system design and verification/approval

IMCA INFORMATION NOTE

• Does not provide, or recommend a prescriptive solution

• Recommends certain considerations which operators should consider and

considers possibilities

• Recognises the advantages of common power bus arrangements whilst also

drawing attention to the difficulties of assurance for such arrangements

• Recommends a goal based approach and calls for further work and

collaboration between interested parties (operators, designers, class, learned

bodies) to develop suitable assurance tools and methods
