Cycling is a rising star in the world of exercise and fun! More and more people focus on a healthy lifestyle and choose to ride their bikes to work – or to take part in the many races that are orga-nized throughout the country. Some prefer to challenge nature and themselves speeding downhill in steep terrain route. The common factor for all is the need for a safe and comfortable ac-tivity. Etto’s continuous focus on safety, quality, functionality and design through decades has made the brand one of Scandiavia’s most appreciated supplier of bicycle helmets.

Etto is an important brand within Hamax AS, again part of the Norwegian HTS Group. HTS has been continuously in operation since 1919, and is now mainly producing consumer products. HTS has several brands working with different safety aspects, and has created and lives by the Group slogan “Scandinavian Safety”. The Etto brand is originally Swedish and go back to the start of the bicycle helmet industry in 1980. Etto has been part of the HTS Group since 1995. Through the HTS Group Etto has, as one of few helmet brands, its own production facilities in China. At our

factory a few hundred thousand helmets are produced each year, and having complete control of the production and development is a key benefit for Etto as a brand. The factory has its own test lab and an R&D-department with 10 employees. The factory is certified by ISO 9000 and run after international guidelines. R&D management is based in Norway. Etto’s main target is expressed in our slogan “Scandinavian Safety”, and all of our bicycle helmets are certified after the CE-standard for personal protective equip-ment EN 1078 and EN 1080. CE-standard require certain impact resistance, strength of strap retention system and roll-off resis-tance. Scalpel

Scalpel is a modern racing helmet with an aerodynamic surface and design. 15 large vents with adjusted inlet angles and deep internal channels leads cooling air in and all through the helmet. Scalpel has shade parking in the front with holes designed to fit sport glasses, TPE rubber is molded on shell to keep the glasses in place during the ride. For increased safety, the helmet has dark reflective material in the back, discrete during the day and highly visible in the dusk. Scalpel is equipped with the very flexible PSS4 adjustment system.

Technology & Innovation

MATERIALSPC (Polycarbonate) – PC is a strong and hard plastic material that is easy to shape when heated. These characteristics makes it suit-able for helmets produced by Inmold or Carbontech Inmold processes. PC is used as outer shell.

PETG (Polyethylene terepthalate glycol) – PETG is also a strong and hard plastic material used for outer shells on Etto’s glued mod-els. It is a material that doesn’t resist heat as well as PC, and it is therefore not used in Inmold production. PETG replaced other ma-terials because it doesn’t release toxic substances when heated.

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) – ABS is a plastic material with high impact resistance. Etto uses it on our skate/BMX helmets.

Carbon – Etto uses real carbon for some models to strengthen the structure of the helmets. The carbon is then molded into the con-struction by our “Carbontech Inmold” process.

EPS (expanded polystyrene) – EPS is also a plastic material. Etto uses only EPS of high quality with a density making the helmet perfect for impact absorption and long lasting. EPS is the inner liner and the main part for impact absorption in a helmet.

PRODUCTION METHODSInmold is a process where outer shell and inner liner is molded together in the final tooling. The construction will be longlasting and have characteristics that spreads the impact forces more than other production forms.

Carbontech Inmold Inmold production where also the carbon reinforcements are molded in the same process. Used for helmets with large air vents.Glued Shell and EPS produced separately, and glued together in the final assembly. Shell protects the EPS and provides a design for the helmet. A easy and reasonable production method.

Hardshell A hardshell in ABS and inner liner in EPS glued together. Both parts shaped in their own tooling, and together provides pro-tection from different sorts of impact

MIPS (MULTIDIRECTIONAL IMPACT PROTECTION SYSTEM)is developed by brain surgeons and scientists to reduce rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head. Most head injuries in connection with bike accidents occur while moving/falling, and the rotational forces may cause concussion or severe brain trauma. The MIPS system will reduce the injuries by absorb-ing parts of the rotational forces. An inner layer of hard plastic is fit-ted into an ordinary bike helmet with 4 flexible anchor points, and will slide slightly once the helmet hits the ground, thereby easing the impact on the brain.

ETTO POWERSTRAP® SYSTEM The Etto helmets are equipped with an extra adjustment mech-anism, called the Etto Powerstrap® System, so that the helmets fit each individual in the best possible way. By turning the small wheel clockwise, the helmet is adjusted to be just as tight as you find comfortable. On PSS4 the fastening wheel can also be moved vertically on the back straps, in order to be placed in the most con-venient way in the back of your head. The ergonomic hoops on each side of the turning wheel are camouflaged behind cushions, and are therefore not noticeable.

It is vital that the helmet is fastened tight and correctly when used. Only then it will provide adequate protection.

The Fidlock ® fastener is a magnetic helmet lock that closes auto-matically and can be opened single-handedly with ease – even when wearing gloves. The innovative fastener concept combines a neo-dymium magnet that is slid sideways with a stable, mechanical snap fastener, which makes it easy to close and secures a continuously strong locking force.

MATERIAL USED:Polycarbonate – PC is a very strong and hard plastic material used as outer shell for both inmold and hard shell helmets. PC is injection molded separately or together with inner liner. ABS – a very strong and hard plastic material used for hard shell helmets. ABS hard shells are injection molded separately from the EPS-liner. ABS works well under cold conditions.

EPS – EPS is a polystyrene made as foam. It has excellent shock absorbing properties, and is used as liner in helmets together with a protective outer shell in a harder material. All our models use EPS as inner liner. EPS is injection molded separately or together with outer shell.

EVA – EVA is a material used to increase impact absorption. In some Etto models it is combined with EPS. EVA is extremely flexible yet though material.

PRODUCTION METHODS USED BY ETTO:Hard shell: Injection molded ABS or PC outer shell, combined together with inner liner of EPS. Hard shell offers very good protection through the characteristics of the PC/ABS-material which is very solid and strong material. Hard shells protect effectively from outside impact. With the hard shell technology it is possible to make very deep shells, offering a full cover protection.

Inmold: PC shell fused together with EPS liner in one operation created by pressure, heat and steam. PC shell is vacuum formed to the correct shape before inmold process. Inmold has the advantage in the light weight achieved, and protection is fulfilled through the force spread characteristic offered by the PC/EPS fusion: by impact from outside the impact forces are spread over a larger area of the human skull, reducing the risk of injury.

Escape gives jr-helmets a new identity, meant for the kids that no longer wants to be kids.
