ETBU 3, Hardin-Simmons 0ABILENE, Texas—Looking for their 11thstraight win, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team took the court in Abilene against Hardin-Simmons for one of their hard-est road matches this season. Though Hardin-Simmons has not been as good in years past, playing in Abilene is always a challenge. But ETBU rose to the challenge, sweeping Hardin-Simmons 25-21, 25-14 and 25-14.

Adaeze Elonu led the way for ETBU tonight with 12 kills and nine blocks. Mallory Sanders added 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. Kayla Taylor led the way with 19 assists while Nicole Buzzard and Hannah Jones tied for the lead in digs with six each.

ETBU got off to a fast start in the first set, gaining an early 8-1 lead. After a timeout by Hardin-Simmons and point their way, Molli Owen served on six straight points for HSU which tied the set at eight each. ETBU got the next point, the first of four straight to take a 12-8 lead. HSU would pull to within one twice at 12-11 and 13-12, but could not take the lead back in the set as ETBU got 10 kills with only three attack errors in the set.

ETBU jumped out to an early lead in the second set as well, gaining an early 8-2 advan-tage. The two teams traded the next eight points, then three straight by HSU got them within three at 12-9. The two traded the next six points to keep the margin at three, but that’s as close as HSU would get as ETBU pulled away to win the set 25-14.

Tied at one early in the third set, ETBU scored four straight on serves from Kolby Sharp, giving them a 5-1 lead which they would not relinquish. HSU would get as close as two at 7-5, but they could not overtake ETBU at any point in the set en route to a 25-14 win.

Hardin-Simmons was plagued by attack errors throughout the match, with 20 total. As a team they hit only .087 over the three sets. ETBU played a clean offensive game with 37 kills and only 11 attack errors.

ETBU 3, Howard Payne 1BROWNWOOD, Texas—After extending a program record with their eleventh straight win Friday night in a victory over Hardin-Simmons, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team looked to extend that streak on Saturday against Howard Payne. They did just that, defeating the Yellow Jackets 3-1, 25-14, 25-16, 17-25 and 25-8.

Mallory Sanders had 1/3rd of the team’s kills in the match with 14 of the team’s 42. She also led the team with nine digs and tied Kolby Sharp for the team lead with four blocks. Adaeze Elonu was second in kills with nine on 17 attacks. Sharp and Bailee Moore added six kills apiece.

Overall ETBU executed well offensively, with 42 kills on 116 attacks with 13 errors. All in all the team’s hitting percentage was .250. Kayla Taylor led the way with 23 assists and Nicole Buzzard added 15. Buzzard also tied Morgan Rupp and Hannah Jones with eight digs.
