Devonshire III & VI Meeting Minutes

The September, 2015 meeting was held at 7pm at the home of Fred Shirley at 5548 Ashurst. In attendance were Sally Roscetti, Denny Dinn, Heidi Huston, Ron Taylor, Fred Shirley, and Sheryl Holko.

The August minutes were approved.

Paul Aikins let us know via email that there were 199 attendees at the Fall picnic. 11 of our neighbors remembered to pay their dues at the picnic, bringing us up to 271 households having paid their annual dues thus far. More financial information will be in the Crier. IF ANY ReSIDeNT HAS NoT YeT PAID THeIR ANNUAL DUeS THeY SHoULD Do So IMMeDIATeLY. Reminder postcards will be going out shortly to households that haven’t yet paid.

Denny Dinn was pleased to report no crime in our neighborhood since our last meeting.

Sally Roscetti let us know that Noll Landscape continues to be the most reliable, competitive, and competent snow removal provider so she is going to do a little shopping but will likely sign a renewal contract with them for this winter’s street plowing and salting. She also reported on her successful and popular new book club (details in Crier). Tentative name: “No Stress Book Club.”

Next was a discussion of the recent Fall picnic and any improvements and/or changes we’d like to make for next year’s celebration. We’ll review these comments during the planning of the 2016 picnic.

Ron Taylor let us know that the new neighborhood sign at Fall Creek and Knyghton is complete except for the limestone name plate. There will be an email blast when the ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled.

Upon confirmation that our hay-wagon drivers are available, it’s likely that the Halloween Hayride will be on Sunday, october 25th. Heidi Huston is working on that and will update us via the Crier and email blasts about the final date. Assuming that our usual wonderful drivers are available, the Hayride will be held at 4pm on that Sunday, october 25th with the usual route leaving Victory Baptist Church, cruising down Brixton, and returning to the church via Green Leaves and Ashurst. More details and the definite date will be included in email blasts. We are certain we will need more neighbor participation from the kind folks on Brixton and Green Leaves, please.

There being no further business and no new business the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sheryl L. HolkoSecretary

The next neighborhood meeting will be held on

thursday, october 15, 2015 at 7pm. It will be hosted

by Sheryl Holko at her home at 6385 Brixton Lane.

All board members and ALL neighbors are invited

AND eNCoURAGeD to attend.

As fall approaches, children begin to anticipate the arrival of Halloween. Although for different reasons, many adults love this time too. It’s a chance to find a cute, scary, or creative costume for our children. Adults, like me, love creating an eerie and haunting outdoor environment to go along with the holiday. others, like my wife and daughter, love to greet the young trick-or-treaters and comment on their great costumes. How-ever, many families with children also have four-legged family members. This season can pose a serious threat to these cats and dogs, if precautions are not taken.

Chocolate! That’s the first candy that often comes to mind. Most simply love this treat, whether it’s in the form of a Butter-fingers or a Hershey’s bar. However, chocolate can be a problem for pets. Many of the popular candy bars used for Halloween are made of milk chocolate, which is one of the least toxic of chocolates. When animals consume small amounts, the result can be a messy and odiferous problem for the family. The smaller the pet, the easier it is to reach a toxic level. Then there are the dark semi-sweet and unsweetened baking chocolates and cocoa power. It is much more dangerous for a pet to ingest small amounts of the baking chocolate and cocoa powder than it is when they ingest small amounts of milk chocolate. If you plan on making Halloween treats that include baking choco-late/cocoa power, be careful. effects of chocolate toxicity can range from vomiting and diarrhea to hyperactivity, to tremors, seizures, and collapse. Another ingredient that is showing up in more and more foods and treats is xylitol, a sugar substi-tute sweetener. It is present in many chewing gums, in some peanut butters and many other treats. It can be purchased in bulk and used to make cookies and breads at home. At lower doses it can cause low blood sugar, which can be deadly if not treated, and at higher doses it can cause serious liver disease/failure. If your pet does get into chocolate or xylitol call your lo-cal veterinarian immediately. If this happens at night or over the weekend (Halloween is on a Saturday this year), you will have to call the local animal emergency clinic. It’s better to take the necessary precautions to be safe rather than sorry.

Don’t leave your candy unguarded, regardless if you are the trick-or-treater or the one passing out candy. Whenever you leave the candy unattended, put it in a location where it is safe from your pets. Remember cats can jump to unimaginable heights. As a result, your cat may knock the candy off the coun-

ter, allowing any additional pets at ground level to enjoy the spilled snacks.

In addition, homeowners who are more health-conscious may provide treats that include grapes or raisins. The ingestion of a single grape or raisin can be deadly. They contain an unidenti-fied toxin that can cause kidney failure. So, again, secure your children’s candy in a place that is impossible for your pet to reach. And if your pet is going with you and your children to trick-or-treat, make sure you have control of your pet. Put them on a leash, where they can’t get their noses into your children’s candy sacks. of course, getting into any candy, even if it is not chocolate, can cause an intestinal upset, meaning you will be cleaning up a lot of vomit and diarrhea throughout the night, and may also mean a trip to the animal emergency clinic in order to get the vomiting and/or diarrhea under control. When my kids were younger, my son & I would create an indoor and outdoor scary, theatrical entrance to our home, complete with special lighting, haze, sound effects, spider webs, and plas-tic spiders. However, some of these things can be hazardous to your pet’s health. To your pet, those plastic or rubber spiders and other frightening crea-tures used to decorate your home are objects to chew on and possi-bly swallow. The stringy, stretchy spider webs and costume props, such as elastic bands on masks, are also possible chew items. All of these can potentially cause intestinal obstruc-tion, which can be deadly if not recognized quick enough and require an expensive surgery. When your children were young, you had to look at your house through the eyes of a curious child and protect them from

Dangers Lurking In the Dark for your Pet

all possible risks through the use of gates and childproof locks. Similarly, you need to look at your decorations and their locations from the perspective of your pets. Believe me, they can be creative in how they get into trouble. I’m not saying don’t decorate—I used to go all out for my kids—but keep an eye out for your pet’s safety. If you are the one answering the door to hand out the candy, make sure you have your pets on a leash, have someone else in your household keep control of them, or confine them else-where in the house. In addition to the danger of candies, some children are afraid of dogs. An aggressive pet could place children at risk, especially if the animal wants some of the snacks inside the children’s bags. Pets also run the risk of an escaping into night, where they are in danger of getting lost,

injured, or worse. It’s best to confine your pet to a safe and out-of-the-way location until the event is over. Halloween night can be a busy, stimulating, and noisy event. Some dogs don’t handle this well and become “unglued,” show-ing signs of neurotic and inconsolable behavior. one case in point is my 14-year-old Yorkie. In these cases, see your veteri-narian ahead of time, and discuss the possible use of anti-anxi-ety medications that can be effective in situations like these.

Halloween can be full of excitement and laughter, as well as a few screams. Being aware of the dangers that lurk in the dark and taking precautions will help make this holiday fun and safe.

Hello Devonshire Neighbors,

Happy fall officially. Did anyone stay up for the blood moon eclipse last weekend? There was a contingent camped on Green Leaves Road with cameras pointed to the sky. The photographers were prepared with tripods and discussions about apertures, ISos I think and use of timers to capture the event. What a great memory for the kids and adults.

As the leaves begin to fall and with Hurricane Joaquin about to hit, please check your storm drains near your house. As soon as those loose leaves cover the drains during a rain, the water starts to back up causing local flooding. If you notice it happening while it’s raining, and you are willing to get a little wet, grab your rake and clear it off if you can.

Not much else to tell this month. As usual, if you have ideas on how to make our neighborhood even better, please share them with me. our book club continues to grow each month. You will find our schedule for the next few months listed below.

See you around the neighborhood!

as our Treasurer pointed out again this year in our Annual Meeting. For the past few years your Board has discussed

Please keep in mind the last increase was 25 years ago. It was not an easy decision however it could no longer be

A message from Andrea’s Garden Center

Due to recent droughts, severe winters, and disease Indianapolis neighborhoods have experienced a significant loss of mature trees. Trees are not only vital to the aesthetics of our neighborhoods, they play many important roles. According to the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, Municipal Forest Resource Analysis, “Research indicates healthy city trees can mitigate impacts associated with urban environs: polluted storm water runoff, poor air quality, high requirements for energy for heating and cooling buildings, and heat islands. Healthy public trees increase real estate values, provide neighborhood residents with a sense of place, and foster psychological, social, and physical health.”

While we understand the incredible cost of tree removal, we also appreciate the importance of replacing trees for future benefits. At Andrea’s, we work hard to inventory a diverse stock of trees suitable for our area and are pleased to extend a special discount for Devonshire residents on tree replacements!

From october 1st through the end of the 2015 planting season we are offering a 30% discount on all trees.

Fall is the most ideal time of year to plant and we look forward to beautifying your neighborhood one tree at a time!
