    2 Our librariesLibrary Services

    Our libraries

    Library Services has 10 libraries. The majority

    o these are on the Edgbaston Campus with

    one library on the Selly Oak Campus, one at theDental School in Birmingham City Centre and

    one in Stratord upon Avon at the Shakespeare

    Institute. Some libraries cover a single subject

    such as Music and others cover a wide range

    o subjects. You can access many o our

    resources without visiting our libraries. Our

    collection o ull text eJournals is available 24/7

    via the eLibrary system and you can send the

    library an instant online enquiry (and get aninstant response) seven days a week using

    the Just Ask! service. Special Collections. The Special

    Collections and Archives o the University

    consist o approximately 120,000 pre-1850

    books dating rom 1471 and some 3 million

    archives and manuscripts.

    During the course o 20092010 Special

    Collections will move to its purpose built

    acility in the Muirhead Tower. This will be

    known as the Cadbury Research Library.

    Until the move, public services will

    continue to be available rom the their

    current location in the Main Library.

    Updates on the move will appear on

    their web pages.

    Where possible, our libraries provide a range

    o study spaces rom individual study spaces to

    rooms which can be booked or group study.

    Opening hours vary at dierent libraries and at

    dierent times o the year. Details o opening

    hours are normally displayed at the entrance to

    each library. They are also available on the web

    at www.library.bham.ac.uk/using/openinghours/

    and on printed yers.

    One o our prime aims is to ensure that our

    libraries are places where people can study in

    the best environment possible. We thereore askyou to observe the ollowing rules;

    o Do not eat or drink (except bottled water) in

    any o our libraries, except in the iLounge in

    the Main Library

    o Treat library sta and your ellow students

    with respect

    Finding material

    The Library Catalogue

    You can use the library catalogue to fndwhether we have the book or journal you

    need. This is available via any PC and lists

    both printed and electronic material.

    Reservations. I the book you want has been

    borrowed by someone else you can reserve

    it via the library catalogue. You will receive an

    email to your University email account when

    the book is ready or you to collect.

    Electronic resources

    eLibrary is your gateway to thousands oarticles, books, reerence resources and

    databases held in electronic ormat. Sta

    can give you advice on how to trace material

    or you can use the online demonstration.

    Many o our e-resources and e-journals are

    only available via a University subscription and

    are thereore subject to licence restrictions

    and require authentication. Access via eLibrary

    authenticates you to use the majority o

    e-resources in eLibrary on or o campus. I you

    use eLibrary to access e-journals etc, you wont

    have to login more than once a session.

    When you fnd an item on the catalogue

    make sure you note down the shelmark

    and the library where it is held. You should

    note all parts o the shelmark, including

    lower case letters. For the Main Library,

    click on Find in the library on our website

    to see in which part o the building the

    item is shelved.Your University o Birmingham username

    and password is used to log on to eLibrary.

    You can also access e-resources o

    campus via this service.

    Many o our books may be borrowed or a week

    or more. Books which are on reading lists are

    oten in heavy demand and are placed in ourShort Loan Collections.

    How many items can I borrowand or how long?

    I you wish to borrow a short loan item on

    a particular day, ask one o our sta about

    booking it.

    How to borrow items

    Take the items to the sel service machinesand ollow the on screen instructions. Where

    no machines are available, take items to a

    lending desk. Your University ID card acts

    as your library card.

    How to return items

    Items can be returned on the sel servicemachine, to a book box or to a lending desk.

    All items except those rom short loan

    collections can be returned to any library.

    Fines or overdue books

    When returning items on the sel service

    machines, please check the picture on the

    screen or where to place them.

    I an item is on your reading list but not availablein the library, please email us at notinthelibrary@

    contacts.bham.ac.uk. We will check the details

    with your lecturer and order a copy or copies

    as quickly as possible.

    You will not be able to renew an item which

    someone else has reserved.

    o Check whether you have any reservations

    We will help you by:

    o Reminding you when items are due back.o Letting you know i something is overdue

    o Letting you know when a reservation

    is waiting

    o Letting you know when something you

    have borrowed has been recalled by

    another borrower.

    Messages rom the library are sent to your

    University email address. You should check

    this on a regular basis.

    Photocopying

    All o our libraries have photocopying acilities.

    Photocopying and printing is paid or by adding

    credit to your University ID card.Copyright regulations. The UK Copyright

    Regulations limit the amount you can copy

    rom one book or one journal issue. This is

    normally no more than 5% or one chapter

    o a book or one article rom a journal issue.

    More detailed inormation about copyright is

    displayed next to the photocopiers.
