BIRD IN THE HOUSE! It’s the last series of Big Brother andPeterborough’s making a bigimpression with not one, but now two, local faces making it into the BBhouse. Evictee Sunshine has nowbeen followed by Peterborough boxerJJ Bird!

The 23 year-old’s been featuredseveral times in ESP and evenmodelled for us in a fashion show lastyear (pictured), now he’s foundhimself in the famous diary room.

JJ has made it onto several quizshows and made various TVappearances already but Big Brotheris like no other so we’ll be watchingwith interest to see how he does.ESP’s Man About Town Pep Ciprianosparred with him at boxing training atPhoenix ABC and in turn gave JJmedia training

“In a way I was surprised theproducers chose him,” said Pep, “ astraditionally they seem to go forextroverts, loose cannons or ‘strange’types whereas JJ is a bit of a poser(in a nice way ) but is pretty ‘normal’.He’s fought and beat some toughfighters and never ducked achallenge. He should do well; he’slikeable and clever enough to workout any mind games othercontestants might play.

“I’m not a BB fan but I’ll definitely bewatching now to get behind him justlike I did at his fights.”

We’ll bring you more next month but inthe meantime… good luck JJ!

IT’S BACK! GET READY FOR RANDALL ROOTZ MK4

One of the city’s bestmusic festival is back thismonth as Randall RootzMk4 returns to rememberlocal musician MarkRandall.

Mark worked hard todevelop the music scenein the city and wasinvolved in various bands,so when he sadly passedaway in 2007 friends andfamily set up this festival inhis memory.

ESP is always pleased toget behind Randall Rootzwhich not only brings afesty vibe to the city and some great free music, but also raises cash for Thorpe Hall Hospicewhere Mark was cared for.

The three-day event will be held on the weekend of August 20, 21 and 22 andthe UK’s only Pogues tribute act,The Dead Rabbits, headline on theopening night at the Brewery Tap inWestgate Peterborough.

The Saturday and Sunday of thefestival will once again move toCharters pub and beer garden fortwo days of live music with around16 different acts due to performwith the line-up looking like this:Tripping Billies, The CandleThieves, Whisky Jax, Psycho Bombs, Randolf Matthews, Martin J Sandom,Groove Cartel, Free Peace, The Duffy Brothers, Murray Hockridge, Bex Marshall,Three Legged Dog, Jez Hellard and the Roving Blades, Barber & Taylor, FilthyLucre and The John Russell Band.

Mark was a well-known face on Peterborough's music scene, playing in numerousbands (including The Dead Rabbits and Angryman) and constantly promoted livemusic and brought new talent to the city.

Festival secretary Pat Murphy told ESP – “This year, because of the financialtimes we all live in, corporate sponsorship hasn’t been as strong. However,we’re very grateful to Oakham Ales for their support, producing a special ale forthe weekend and supporting the charity we work to help, Sue Ryder Care.

"Special mention must also go to the voluntary support, which has been reallyoverwhelming and we’re so grateful for the support of the scores of musicianswho’ll be playing the festival, and those volunteers that organise the children’sactivities and all the other work that goes on behind the scenes.”

As well as the diverse range of live acts, ranging from folk and world musicthrough to rock and indie, the festival will also include performance poetry, arts, avariety of family entertainment and environmentally inspired workshops andinformation stands for people of all ages.

Funding for the Randall Rootz Festival is made possible through a combination ofticket sales for the Friday night event, the enthusiasm of the bands over the wholeweekend and the generosity of the festival’s many sponsors, especially OakhamAles and Serpentine Green, which allows organisers to stage the free Saturdayand Sunday events.

For more details, go to www.randallrootz.org and we’ll see you there!

AS HEARD ON

Fridays 7pm-8pm Proudly sponsored by:

MR WHIPPY OR MR BLOBBY? Having sex once will burn off the 164 calories of Mr Whippy you’ve scoffed from the ice cream van.Problem is it has to last 15 minutes. Mmm…that’s a lot. Power to my love handles then.

It’s not often I get to interview one of my heroes. Younormally only get one chance of posing questions tosomeone like Mike Tyson, so I put together some ofthe most challenging questions I know boxing fansalike have always wanted answers to.

Frustratingly he didn’t answer the majority of them butfocused instead on providing responses to the oneshe felt most comfortable with. Nor did he agree topose nose-to-nose and in a boxing stance with me forour photograph, or indeed look at the camera. Theysay you should never interview your heroes and now Iknow why!

But meeting intimidating ‘Iron Mike’ was stillfascinating and it wouldn’t have been possible withoutBoxing Promotions Limited, in association withSmackdown Boxing Gym in Hampton. These guysbrought An Evening With The Baddest Man On ThePlanet to Peterborough – the EXEC exhibition centre at

the East of England Showground to be precise.

Hosted by boxing pundit Steve Bunce, more than1,300 people turned out to hear what one of the mostexciting and controversial heavyweight boxers of alltime had to say about his life in and out of boxing.

Tyson became the youngest ever (aged 20) WorldHeavyweight Champion in 1986 with a second roundknockout of Trevor Berbick. His outstanding handspeed, accuracy, coordination, power, timing anddefensive abilities – taught by his mentor CusD’Amato – made him one of the all time greats.

However, as with all great fighters, Tyson’s careerbegan to slowly deteriorate (the death of D’Amato andan unstable personal life combined) and many wouldagree his finest years were between 1986 and 1988despite two wins in 1989 (one against Frank Bruno)before his defeat to Buster Douglas in 1990.

You can read my full interview on www.espmag.co.ukbut firstly I began with a question that every boxing fanknows the answer to…

Do you think you’d have ever been heavyweightchampion of the world had you not met CusD’Amato?

“Never. I think I am an idiot and Cus always knewhow to work with fighters who had special needs. Hewas blessed with a skill to convey his genius tofighters with no patience and discipline.”

What made him so special and what made youtrust and believe in him?

“He was very interested in me and desperate to seeme succeed. I loved my new family structure (Custook Tyson under his wing and moved him into hishome) and I felt if I couldn’t succeed then I wouldn’tbe able to stay with him. That was my motivation.

“One day Cus said if I kept acting up in school Iwould have to leave him. I fell on the floor crying – itwas the first time he saw me cry – and begged himto not put me out. He didn’t but the threat was thereunless I tried harder at school.”

You knocked out Trevor Berbick to win theheavyweight title. Can you remember what wasgoing through your mind minutes before theopening bell?

“I wanted to make Cus happy and told myself thatCus was going to have his second heavyweightchampion that night. I really believed this was myreal family and I just wanted to make Cus proud of me.”

Which fight would you say was your best and why?

“I think Buster Douglas was my best fight because Itook a good beating. In the boxing world that I camefrom, taking a beating like I did was merit in itself.Even when Muhammad Ali fought Larry Holmespeople were in awe of Ali's pain threshold. It wasunimaginable. If that fight was never stopped, Aliwould have continued until his death.”

Who was your toughest opponent?

“Probably Evander Holyfield.”

Do you remember who you beat when you said:"How dare these boxers challenge me with theirprimitive skills? It makes me angry. They're justas good as dead."

“It was Carl ‘The Truth’ Williams. I let my ego cloudmy judgment, which led me to say those things. Inow deeply regret making that statement. I justwanted to be famous. I told my mother at her gravethat when the Tyson name is mentioned people

wouldn’t think about CecilyTyson. I sparred withWilliams when he waspreparing to fight Holmes.Carl helped prepare mefor life in the boxing ringand I should’ve saidcomplimentary things andthanked him for giving mea chance by sparring withhim. Guys like Holmesdidn’t want to spar withme because I was just akid.”

Who would you name as the three bestheavyweights of all time and why?

“I’d say Ali, Holmes and I think Rocky Marciano was extremely underrated.Marciano had fast hands but never got any credit for it. He was probably themost underrated heavyweight of all time. His skills were overlooked and Ican count on one hand the number of black eyes he received. His boxingskills surpassed his 49 and 0 record.”

What does it take to be a champion and what advice would you give tosomeone aspiring to be one?

“I’d say deprive yourself of everything that tastes and feels good. The onlypleasure that should be allowed is in the gym and the ring. The art ofdiscipline should be studied and mastered. My definition of discipline isdoing what you hate to do but doing it like you love every second of it.”

What motivates you today?

“Passion for life. I’m trying to be a decent person in life and society. Beingable to support and help others besides just my family and friends. If I havea healthy life then I will have a healthy death.”

Boxing fever continues on Saturday September 11 with 13 bouts of semi-professional boxing including an eagerly awaited clash between local ladsPaddy Wright and Russ Bates. For details and tickets call 01733 311549.

THE RIVERSIDE ROUND UP

UNCLE SAMS IS COOKING! I popped into the new Uncle Sams restaurant on StMary’s Street in town with my good friend HannahGookey to sample some of their quality American-themed grub.

Mark, the owner, is keen to create a very laid-backatmosphere with quality food, not fast food! And thefood certainly is quality – I tried their veggie burger whichcomes with homemade coleslaw (the best I’ve tasted!)and their American-style fries. The burgers are all cookedfresh that day on a proper bad boy open grill! Hannahnot being vegetarian had the Montreal burger.

Mark also offers a massive range of steaks and told mepart of the reason for him opening the restaurant was toprovide a place in the town to get a decent steak anyday of the week.

If you haven’t given it a try just yet the restaurant’s openTuesday to Saturday 10.30am till 2.30pm then 6.30pm tilllate and Sundays 12pm - 3pm.

SCOTGATE BANK HOLIDAYBEER & TUNES It’s good to see The Scotgate of Stamford returned to its former glory and gettingback in the swing of live gigs. On August 7 Fallen play live, then over the Augustbank holiday weekend they’re mixing live music with a mini beer festival –Copperhead will be playing some great AC/DC tunes on August 28 and BlueSoul Express play at 2pm on August 29 and then it’s open mic on the bankholiday Monday. The new owners took over in June and formerly ran The Norfolkin Peterborough, famed for its live music, and The Bell in Sawtry. They’ve shapedup the pub with a refurb and now offer food with a carvery on Sundays.

Word is they’re also opening a cellar bar in September which will stage open micand folk nights, so I’ll keep you posted.

Another Riverside fest done and dusted and another successful year for all involved I think! A record number of people attended the two day festival this year includingmyself. I popped down with the ESP Paparazzi girls Emma and Sadie on the Saturday to capture the vibe and take in some of the music and fantastic sunshine we had forthe day. Looks like you were all having a great time…

THE BARNOPENS ITS DOORS A new venue should be opening itsdoors in Stamford around now. TheBarn will be taking over where SquareOne used to be situated in St Mary’sPassage. In a bid to escape thefreak jungle-worthyheatwave that we’dbeen experiencing oflate, I decided a tripto the seaside was inorder.Having packed the picnic (that I’d later discard infavour of fish and chips), stick of rock and thebikini that I probably wouldn’t wear (in that neckof the woods the sea is waaaaaay too cold) – wewere ready to go!

The trip down was lovely. Even the four-mile tailback, one hour queue didn’t faze me. Perhapsbecause we had the A/C on full blast and JamesMorrison playing on the CD player, but mostlybecause I was about an hour away from myfavourite chippy. Plus all the nasty thunder flieswere squashed against the windscreen ratherthan crawling on me! Revenge is sweet…

The day was absolutely beautiful, perhaps a bittoo beautiful. We’d eaten our fish and chips, icecream and rock (slimming!) and were relaxing onthe quietist part of the beach. I say the ‘quietest’part of the beach, but that somehow paints afalse picture. You see, the beach was heaving. What with the sun beaming down and themajority of the population not owning a massiveswimming pool (myself included), everyone hadflocked to the beach, like moths to a flame. Themass of people didn’t help with the temperaturelevels so, having changed into the bikini ‘that Iwasn’t going to wear’, I sought sanctuary in thesea. Not trusting our temperamental weather, Iplaced my Pri-mani (Primark) flip-flops on top ofmy clothes in case they flew away.

We were gone for what seemed like five minutesbut in actual fact it was nearer an hour. The seawas unusually lukewarm (or perhaps I was extrahot?) and so time had run away with us.

After a short spell of drying off in the sun, we gotdressed again and were making our way to thecar when… something felt very different. Myshoes had vanished. Now, being the organisedperson I like to be, I emptied my bag, in the hopethat I’d already packed them but they weren’tthere.

“Where did you put them?”my boyfriend Tim‘helpfully’ asked. Men! Why oh why do they ask

the most ridiculous questions? This is always the predictable yetentirely unhelpful question askedonce something’s lost. If I knewwhere I’d put them, they wouldn’tbe lost! Not picking up on myannoyance he continued with –“Did you leave them in the car?” Iscowled. “No darling, not in the car.I wore them here.” Did he really thinkthat I’d trundled over to this spotwithout shoes on? Diana Vickers orJoss Stone, I am not!

One helpful thing that came out of‘Tim’s Question Time’ was that itgot my slightly sundried brainwhirring. As I knew I’d worn themfrom the car and that I hadn’tpacked them away there was onlyone conclusion; they’d been stolen!

I scanned the crowds for guilty-looking fashionistas who might besporting my precious Pri-manifootwear and then… I spotted them, perched in the sand next to acouple. I boldly went over andasked if they were my flip flops thathad surely been taken by ‘mistake’.The look of death that followedindicated that indeed they were not.The fact that they were white andmine were gold was also anindicating factor… Oops!

Shame-faced at my false accusationTim hurried me away to the car. Ifsome little scally wanted my £2.50Pri-mani couture that much thenthey were welcome to them!

The situation was not helped by thefact I squashed a big chip under my left, bare foot and an elderly gentleman, dressedas if going to the races, shook his head andtutted after looking at my feet. This attire was NOTby choice!

The drive home was less fun. The sandalsweren’t my prized possessions or anything butthey were such a bargain… and they matchedmy bikini… and well THEY WERE MINE! Girls youknow the feeling I’m sure.

When I finally stopped sulking and realised I’dactually not only walked to the car barefoot butwas driving without shoes too I began to humSuper Duper Love and figured the Joss Stonelook kind of suited me…

Oh I do like to be besidethe seaside…

COMMON ALLERGIES ANDHOW TO HELP PREVENT THEMAn allergy is an abnormal reaction of the immune system which occurs to harmless environmentalsubstances such as pollen, animal hair or even food. It’s claimed one in three people in the UK arelikely to suffer from an allergy at some stage in their life and although usually harmless they can bevery annoying, especially hay fever. Here are a few tips on how to help prevent allergies …

• Pollen – Sneezing and having a runny nose is never attractive. Try to reduce symptoms bystaying in on windy days when the pollen count is high, close your windows and use air-con ifyou have it instead. If you do suffer from hay fever try using a nasal spray or take antihistamines.

• Animal hair – if you have a pet, keep it out of your bedroom and wash the animal regularly.Vacuuming often will help too… that’s the house not your pet!

• Insect bites and stings – wear insect repellent and long sleeves and trousers in the evenings, especially if you’re near water. Keep sweet foods and drinks, that may attract wasps, covered up.

• Cockroaches – they’re not only creepy but their droppings can cause allergic reactions too. You’ll often get cockroaches on holiday in hotter climates but you do get them in England too.Try to keep your kitchen area clean and block any holes in floors, walls and windows to keepthem out. Don’t stamp on them if you see them as this can spread their eggs and the problemmay get worse.

• Dust mites – although present all year round their population peaks during the summer as theythrive in warm, humid temperatures. Prevent dust mite allergies by covering mattresses andpillows and washing your sheets on a weekly basis in hot water.

GET IN THEBROWKNOW-HOW Bold brows are all the rage at the moment withstatement eyebrows a favourite on thespring/summer 2010 runways. Keep yours fulland natural for an easy, modern look with thehelp of JK Jemma Kidd I-Conic Eyes BrowPencil, £10.

I tested this out to see if it was worth themoney and found it to be an extremely useful

make-up tool. With eyebrow brush andtweezers one end and the brow pencil andsharpener at the other end it really does haveeverything you need to get perfect brows inone handy pencil. The pencil itself was theperfect colour and blended in well with thebrush helping to keep brows looking groomedand tidy. Definitely a worthwhile beauty tool, ideal for everyday use.

TRIED ANDTESTED Having just got back from Turkey on my hols, my friendRachel and I had the perfect opportunity to test a variety ofsuntan lotions to see which ones really are worth themoney. Here are our top three…

1) Best all-rounder – Boots Soltan MoisturisingSuncare Lotion SPF 30, £9.25.

Me – “This light, non-greasy lotion really is my must havebuy if you’re out and about in the sun this summer. It hasa 5 star UVA rating and is really easy to apply and rub in,leaving your skin soft and moisturised. Most importantlythough it does what it’s meant to and really does keepyour skin protected and reduces redness.”

2) Best for sensitive skin – Simple Sun SensitiveLotion, available in SPF10, SPF15, SPF30 andSPF50, £9.99.

Rachel – “This sun cream is perfect for sensitive skin. Ioften get an allergic reaction to suntan lotions but I hadno problems with the Simple range of sun creams. Theylast for a long time and are waterproof, so ideal if you're abit of a water baby. The only negative to this sun cream isthat it’s quite thick so doesn't rub in very well and canleave you with a white glow!”

3) Best long lasting – Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lotion,SPF15, £9.95.

Rachel – “This lotion gives you up to six hours protectionfrom the sun. It's easy to apply and is waterproof so youdon't need to re-apply every time you get out of the pool.I’d recommend applying it half an hour before sunexposure. It's only available in SPF15 so isn't suitable forthose who are extra sensitive to the sun but really doeslast for six hours.”

Looks like everybody inPeterborough is in lovewith JLS as the citycame alive with thesound of their music! When I saw a mile of fans queuing up to see JLS(18,500 to be precise) I was a little frustrated to bejoining the back of it, but it didn’t take me long torealise this wasn’t your typical queue. This was thebrightest, loudest, and most excited line of peopleI’ve ever seen.

After counting 104 blue hoodies, and singing thechorus to Everybody In Love for the seventh time, Iwas finally on the Embankment.

With summer deciding to join us again and HeartFM creating a brilliant atmosphere on the stage, Icould really feel the excitement starting to build. Iknew we were about to experience a concert theO2 or Wembley would’ve been proud to host....and right on our doorstep!

By the time dance group Diversity hit the stage theanticipation levels were sky high, and seeing theguys dance that well in the flesh makes you realisehow amazing they really are – if you thought they

looked good on the TV, it’s even better whenyou’ve got a front row seat (well, mid way back atleast).

And recent ESP cover star Diana Vickers warmedthe crowd up nicely too – not everyone’s cup of tea– but her single, Once, was a big hit and the crowdgave her a warm welcome. There’s no denying thatgirl can belt out a tune, even with the pressure of18,500 people watching! She definitely brightenedup the night for any lads who’d been unwillinglydragged along!

It was quite obvious thatmost of us were there forone thing. When the firstfew beats of JLS’smusic hit the stage, thecrowd went wild. Girlsscreamed and cried, everyone danced andshouted at the tops of their voices... it was enoughto make the hairs on the back of your neck standup. Aston then said to us all – “I’ve been waitingto say this for a long time. It feels good to behome. I’ve told the lads there’s no crowd like aPeterborough crowd.” JLS then went on to do agreat performance – Aston showing off his backflips and powerful voice, and the impressive dancemoves I wish I could pull out in Flares on aSaturday night.

The lads had of course just scored their thirdnumber one single with The Club Is Alive – and Ithink it got the biggest cheer of the night. It wasamazing to see everyone around me singing everyword of their other hits too – Beat Again, EverybodyIn Love and One Shot – not bad for a band thathasn’t even been around for two years yet.

It seems it was not just me who was impressedwith the evening. Kerry Phillips from Bretton toldme – “I’ve been waiting outside the gates since7am, but I don’t even care. Seeing Aston hasbeen more than worth the wait.”

Watching with her two children, Debbie Shaw fromWerrington summed it up perfectly – “This is thebest thing to happen in Peterborough for a verylong time. The kids have had an amazing time, and I hope there’ll be more things like this in thefuture.”

Let’s hope so!

Our boy Aston giving it his all!

“There’s something foreveryone here”

Kylie’s sold 60 million records and her first ever tour ofAmerica last year received rave reviews so her star isstill shining bright in the pop heavens. For Aphroditeshe worked with an executive producer for the firsttime, Stuart Price, and it’s clearly worked out well.

“It was just the best experience,” enthuses Kylie,“and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesivealbum I’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in the PWL days, whereby its very nature madeit cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working withdifferent producers and trying different stuff whichhas worked really well for me in the past but Idefinitely wanted someone to tie this together asStuart (Price) has done so beautifully... so that itexisted as a real body of work.”

So what was it about this album and this project thatmade Kylie want to do it differently to before?

“The idea (to do it differently) was at theforefront of my mind on this album becauseI’d had a little niggle with the previoustwo albums. But the added reasonthat all of this came around wasbecause of our dear friend JakeShears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working in this verystudio, as I had startedrecording my album in variousstudios around the world. Hepraised Stuart highly and loves medearly, and basically pestered me andsaid – ‘you’ve got to do this, it’ll be so amazing!’ – soI’ve got much to thank Jake for.”

Kylie wrote several tracks on the album but also wrotewith other people including Nerina Pallot on the titletrack and Luciano and the Swedish House Mafia onCupid Boy as well as the likes of Calvin Harris andKean’s Tom Rice-Oxley. Songs were then selectedbecause they fit into the blueprint of the record.Aphrodite is a much lighter album and Kylie admitsthat in some way it’s a reaction to the darker timesshe’s been through.

“I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. Iguess I was just feeling like expressing joy at thispoint I’d written songs more about that period in mylife either on or for the last album, so I didn’t feel likegoing through those again; this was about thismoment, this time, and what a happy experience thishas been for me.”

Kylie’s love life is always a topic of press speculationand interest so what’s her relationship with love at themoment?

“That’s a massive question! A lot of people questionwhy so many pop songs are about love, why operasare so written, why paintings are painted, why we cryduring really silly commercials. Love in all its variousforms challenges us all the time and I guess youcould say this was a little love affair with this album. Iloved coming to work and I loved working withStuart, I think that feeling comes through on thealbum.”

Thecreation ofthis albumdoes seem toshow a real lift inher outlook as shereveals a small area ofthe studio became known asthe ‘dance zone’ where if a song wasright she and her producer Stuart couldn’tcontain themselves from bursting into a littleboogie!

“We’d both be listening in our own world andthere’d be the point in the song when the handswould go up! Hands up – good reaction. And ofcourse there was the ‘Dolly Parton Litmus Test’which I’ve got to tell you has travelled, I’ve beenasked so much about that. It’s a way of testing asong’s viability as a song without production. He’d(Stuart) get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing.”

Apparently Kylie does a pretty hot Dolly Partonimpersonation and they decided that if they could seeDolly belting out the tune with just a guitar and itwould work then it was probably a song destined forgood things. Of course this probably means Kylie willalso be destined to do her Dolly version of her songsat every dinner party from this point on! Kylie revealsshe embraced her alter ego with enthusiasm…

“As a celebration when it was my last day coming inhere to wrap up a couple of things, I took it uponmyself to get two of the cheapest, gnarliest, got-nothing-to-do-with-a-natural-fibre-at-all outfits –

LAUNCH@ HALO!It was the special opening of the year so farand Halo on Northminster definitely didn’tdisappoint! ESP’s Pep Cipriano mingledwith the rest of the invited VIP guests for anopening evening that brought the buzzback to the city’s night scene.

Halo is tastefully kitted out and revelerswere equally tastefully dressed for a nightthat brought back memories of the old TheBar – the music, its people and the vibe.Plenty of familiar faces turned out, reminisced about ‘back in the day’ andsampled some of the delicious food onoffer.

The Asian Pacific menu is not only tasty butprices look good too. It seems there’sanother place to add to your lunchtimehaunts or for an evening meal. Drinksprices get the thumbs up too!

The décor is definitely a new look for the cityand manager Dave Keetley is proud of hisreturn to the city at this great new venue. He’s lined up DJ nights, and says it’s over20s only after 9pm Friday and Saturday.

There were new faces on the launch nighttoo and plenty of dancing to some oldfavourites as well as current tunes. Halo hasa familiar, elegant and inviting feel to it. Weknow our Man About Town is hooked andwill no doubt be on Paparazzi duty in thereagain soon. Watch this space if you want tobe pictured in the place of the moment.

ASTON DROPS BY ATJACK HUNT AND THEPLOUGHMAN PARTIESFOR CHARITY! Our Man About Town Pep Cipriano dustedoff his lens for a bit of paparazzi action at twocity events that couldn’t have been moredifferent.

The Ploughman pub in Werrington isenjoying a revival under new manager. AndySimmons and Pep joined in at a specialcharity event in aid of a local lad which raiseda fantastic £3,150! The place was packedwall to wall with regulars enjoying theirfavourite tipple while rocking to theunmistakable sounds of excellent local bandHooker (that orange overall is legendary). There was food on the go too, with some ofthe finest German sausages money can buy– very tasty according to our Pep.

The Ploughman is the place to be forkaraoke

Pep’s next mission with his camera was tocheck out the Jack Hunt School 40thanniversary celebrations, which reached itsgrand finale after three days and saw a veryspecial guest drop by!

Our lensman was in his element at theschool’s 70s disco where staff dressed up intheir platforms and flares and taught thestudents about school life in that decade.

Former pupil, and now JLS band member,Aston Merrygold also made a specialappearance and performed Empty Chairs AtEmpty Tables from the musical, LesMisérables – a song he first sang in 2004when he was at the school.

Other events included South American-themed activities, dance performances, anexhibition of archive press cuttings spanningthe four decades, school memorabilia andphotos which drew lots of interest.

The evening also gave thanks to Headteacher, Roy Duncan who’s retiring at the endof August. What a night? The only thingmissing was our own Face of ESP ToriBradshaw who’s a student at the school asshe was off on hols!

Smack bang in the middle of the city Malayba has been quietlybuilding a reputation for good food over the last eight monthsso I thought it was high time that me and ‘her good self’ tried itout. We pitched up on a balmy Wednesday night to therestaurant which was pleasantly busy for midweek. Immediatelyyou equate people with good food and service.

The restaurant is very Polynesian; exotic in its decor and boastsa menu that has its feet firmly in Malaysia but skirts around thebottom of the Pacific picking the best dishes up on the way. Wewere warmly welcomed and having been served a cool glass ofSun Lik lager we started to digest the menu, not physically youunderstand. There are two ways of doing food here – a la cartepick and mix or set menus. Being hungry and impatient wewent for a set menu, set menu A to be pernickety.

At our table a plate of starters arrived which included Thaifishcakes, chicken satay, spring rolls, money bags – a veggieparcel and paper bag chicken which was not only novel but fun.All were cooked perfectly and piping hot which always pleasesme. Suffice to say they didn’t last long.

After a perfect digestion break second course was served, LucLac beef. Small chunks of tender juicy beef seared in a garliccrust accompanied by a lime and black pepper dip. Man alive, amore succulent lump of beef you will struggle to find – beautiful. The tangy lime sauce complimented the garlic just right.

The second course having settled nicely we were then servedthe main course, a three dish affair consisting of Indonesianking prawns, beef in asparagus and black peppercorns andchicken in lime leaves.

Firstly the prawns – big, fat, juicy, cooked just right andsmothered in a sweet chilli, coconut milk Indonesian sauce. They were so good ‘her good self’ had to stop me eating thelot; you know the kind of king prawn, burst in the mouth styleand wait for the taste explosion!

The beef was again tender and because of the peppercorns, hot but not spicy if that makes any sense, contrasted with theprawn dish a treat. As did the chicken, the lime cut through tothe palate and released the flavours of the Malay onion sauce itwas bathing in, it was truly a stunning trio of dishes.

I was pig enough to have a bowl of pecan and maple ice-creamfor afters but that’s me and ice-cream for you…

A set meal will cost you about £20 which is good value whenyou consider that everything is cooked with fresh ingredients,no preservatives or colourings are added, the meat is all halalas well so if that’s important to you, you got it.

Malayba? We loved it – I think you will too.

RIVERFORD’S FIELD KITCHEN MUST VISIT MORE OFTEN! After sampling the fabulous food and the experience of dining in the Riverford yurt, all I can say is – bring it back next year!

Rev

iew

Riverford Organics took their popular field kitchen fromDevon on tour last month and erected their yurt (acircular tent) at Sacrewell Farm in Peterborough andgave diners a unique experience.

This fantastic idea not only gave us great recipe ideasfor Riverford’s organic produce but also a rare sociableevening of dining. Sat at a series of long wooden tablesyou inevitably ended up chatting to fellow diners as youpassed along platefuls of delicious food so you couldall take a share. It was a bit like being at the familydinner table but without any of the tensions!

The staff were fantastic and it was great to taste arange of dishes rather than just the one you’d normallyorder from a menu and it was all tasty and cooked toperfection. You can’t beat food fresh from the fields thatday and the lamb with lentils and salsa, roast carrotswith lemon, honey and caraway and new potatoes inmint and butter were just gorgeous… and as for thedesserts, where do I start?! They were a dessert lover’sdream come true and it was great to be able to samplea little bit of everything!

Before the meal it had been lovely to look out acrossthe fields on a summer’s evening enjoying organic

beer, wine and lemonade and the doorways around theyurt gave you the chance to enjoy the view while youwere eating.

Riverford was recently named most sustainable foodprovider at the Peterborough Green Awards and aim tomake organic food accessible and affordable toeveryone through their veg boxes delivered straight tolocal homes.

I hope we convinced them to bring the travelling fieldkitchen back next year, and for longer, so if you do getthe chance, make sure you try it for yourself. You won’tbe disappointed.

Our thoughts and feelings affect the chemistry in ourbody. We all know the feeling of being in a great mood, feeling happy, hopeful and excited (the average womanreally!) We equally know the opposite feelings of fear, sadness, grief and anger which none of us like but manyof us push down in order not to allow them to overtakeus day to day.

Some people carry emotional pain for years. Ouremotional state can be based on past hurts, events anddisappointments or can be due to a current situation. We also have a mind that wanders down the future pathbefore we’ve got there so we can trigger differentfeelings from something that’s not even happened. Thetrouble with this is the mind is unaware of what is realand what is not and responds to your feelings. So themore dread you have of some imagined doom or gloomthe more it is affecting your physical wellbeing with therelease of stress hormones.

So why do I write this and what does it have to do withnutrition? Just think for a minute about how you react tothose negative feelings inside, do you –

Forget to eat? Or else can’t keep your head out ofthe biscuit tin or the vending machine?

How much alcohol do you need before you finallythink you’ve drowned those sorrows?

Do you become Forrest Gump and just keeprunning?

Do you keep the tobacco industry in business withendless smoking?

Do you ‘lose it’ with everyone?

Most of us suffer a bit of self sabotage when we’re notreally dealing with emotional issues. Nothing robs thebody more readily of nutrients than ongoing challengesin life that aren’t being dealt with, as these stress out thebody.

Your emotions may play a critical role in your physicalwellbeing. How we deal with them varies from person toperson. Unexpressed long held emotions maycontribute to disease so you need to take care of youremotional wellbeing as well as your diet and overalllifestyle.

The mind, body and emotions are all linked, neglectingone affects the other.

Radio stations in Peterborough are full of changes atthe moment and for the last few weeks Heart listenershave found themselves waking up with a new girl asRos joined Kev Lawrence on the 102.7 breakfastshow. The changeover left many people asking whathappened to Abby, the show’s previous co-host in thebreakfast chair.

Kev told ESP – “For two and a half years (more orless since Hereward became Heart) I’ve lovedworking with Abby whose sense of fun and wickedlaugh also proved to be really popular with listeners.I’ll always have fond memories of the time we spenton the air together, and I’ll miss her loads. But it’snow time to embrace the new show after bosseshere decided on a change of direction. HeartPeterborough is now Heart Cambridgshire, covering

a much bigger area, which is really exciting.”

So as Abby has moved on to new opportunities Kev’snew co-host Ros Webb has moved across frompresenting on Heart in Milton Keynes and told ESP –“I’m really loving being on the new show with Kev.This city looks like a great place to live and work. I’vegot some old Uni friends who are fromPeterborough, and catching up with them has beenamazing.

“The best thing about Peterborough so far for me isits beautiful cathedral. I want to live in it. Plus with ourstudios situated within Queensgate, I love the factthat I can be presenting one minute and shoppingfor shoes the next!”

Kev and Ros told us that the show will still focus on

playing brilliant music first and foremost, with essentiallocal news and traffic in the mornings.

Kev added – “Rather than being local for local’ssake, our aim is to be more relevant to peoples lives.Huge competitions – big name guests, and lots ofshowbiz stuff… and most importantly of all, a senseof fun for people to wake up to in the morning!”

Although he admits changes are difficult and takesome getting used to he believes the fact the station’snow bigger will mean they’re able to be involved inmore exciting things.

“Things like the concerts at the Embankmentrecently, which were fantastic for Peterborough –they’re hopefully the start of something moreregular.”

Let’s hope so guys! Take a look at their backstagevideo blog with Marvin and Aston from the JLSconcert on www.heart.co.uk

Peterborough’s newest garden centreand shopping complex has followedup its official royal opening with newsof exciting plans for Christmas.

Almost 500 invited guests and localschool children welcomed HRH theCountess of Wessex to PeterboroughGarden Park recently for the openingof the Park’s garden centre and 11complementary shops.

Summer at the centre might be in fullswing but plans are already in placefor Christmas at the Van Hage gardencentre which will have a fantastic icerink as part of its festivities running forsix weeks from Saturday November27 to Sunday January 9, 2011.

Gordon Eddington Chairman ofPeterborough Garden Park told ESPthe royal opening was a special dayfor everyone – “We’ve been lookingforward very much to welcoming HerRoyal Highness and she made it areal success.

“She loved seeing and meeting thechildren, she clearly has a greataffinity with them and within VanHague garden centre she liked thearchitecture and understood theconnection that building has with theglasshouses at Wisley.

ROYAL OPENING AT GARDEN PARK “When she completed the unveiling ofthe Children’s Circle tile art she said itwas one of the best projects she’dunveiled – she really liked the idea ofcelebrating all the children’s names.”

Paul Tapparno restaurant manager ofAndronicas World Of Coffee at the sitetold ESP the day also marked the startof some exciting plans there too.

“We’re already running an art displaywhich is going really well and thefeedback’s been great. We plan tointroduce jazz evenings and open lateuntil 11.30pm at night. It’ll besomething different and give people achoice from going into town. It’ll beticketed and include food and a glassof wine.

“We’re also planning some specialcommunity events including a charityday on August 30 for a young girlcalled Sophia who’s disabled – andwe’ll be doing something similarevery bank holiday Monday.”

It all sounds great and we’re lookingforward to all the new events, we’llkeep you posted but in the meantimekeep an eye onwww.peterboroughgardenpark.co.ukfor all the latest.

BRITS STILL PINING FOR THEIR FIRST CAR Auto Trader research reveals one in five peoplesecretly long to get their hands on their first car.

Recent research by AutoTrader.co.uk revealed thatsentimental Brits would love to buy back the first carthey owned. Out of 2,370 people questioned in June2010, 20% said that they’d also be likely to buy a newcar just because it reminded them of the first car theyowned!

Most of us can remember that painful day when ourfirst symbol of freedom was carried off on the back ofa lorry to the scrap yard as we waved it off with a tearin our eye. As many as one in ten say that they weregenuinely devastated at the end of this great first loveaffair.

Still, for 10% of respondents it was all about the newcar – for them, a car that’s 2-5 years old is just too oldwhen purchasing a ‘new’ vehicle! The good news isthat thanks to the swappage schemes now in placeat major car manufacturers like Peugeot, Kia andToyota, a new version of that original motor is easy tolay your hands on.

the car but not sure I'd want it back – think I rode myluck enough when I owned it the first time!”

The page that says after 15 series Top Gear is still providing viewers with plenty

of joy. For me it’s working out which one of thepresenters is the biggest idiot. Is it Clarkson andhis disgusting habit of talking at the same time as

trying to swallow a burp? May and the way hepronounces the word ‘was’ as ‘wuz’ or Hammond, whocan barely see above the steering wheel when he’s

driving and spends the rest of the time sniggering atanything the other two say? It’s such a difficult decision I’ll need another 15

series to decide.

SUMMER, SUMMER,SUMMER TIME.JUST SIT BACK AND UN-WHINEWell, what a summer it’s been so far. Amazing the difference a bit ofsunshine makes. A couple of weeks ago I stepped out ofQueensgate and thought I’d been magically transported to somecosmopolitan city centre in the heart of Europe. Then I caught sightof the graffiti scrawled on top of a building society wall, smallchildren running through the fountain water jets wearing just adripping nappy, and their mothers smoking a cigarette and holding aMcDonalds happy-meal box. It was at that point I realised that yes, Iwas still in Peterborough – city of a thousand dreams.

But of course the biggest talking point over the summer was theWorld Cup and a certain team’s shocking performance. I don’t thinkI’ve ever seen a team perform so badly. After all the hype andexpectation over the past year you’dthink we’d get something trulyamazing, but instead they wereabsolutely pathetic; and don’t evenget me started on how much theyearn.

But, anyway that’s enough aboutthe actors in the new A-Teamfilm…onto other stuff.

Last month’s Mostly Fenny WalkOf Fame – a light-hearted look atsome of the places around thecity centre with a connection toPeterborough’s most famousresidents and visiting celebritiesproved popular. Thanks toeveryone who emailed in theirown suggestions. Please keepthem coming, no matter how trivial.

SHED INTHE FACERegular readers may remember that thismonth is the 1st anniversary since Faceof ESP compere Ian Gray burnt downhis garden shed in a freak gardeningaccident. Picture the scene. Ian’s happilyzapping weeds with a new gardeninggizmo he’d got from B&Q whenunbeknownst to him some embers blewunder his shed. An hour later as he relaxedindoors on his chaise longue watching thecricket with a can of Boddingtons, his wife Caroline came running into the living roomto tell him there were ten-foot flames roaring from his shed! At the time I marked thissad occasion by suggesting Ian joined Matt Zilch’s band on stage when they nextplayed Kings of Leon’s Sex On Fire. Altogether now, “Oh no – my shed is on fire!”

Thankfully Ian took this in good spirits and it’s now my great pleasure to report that ayear on he has a brand new deluxe garden shed installed for summer 2010 which heproudly told me about recently.

“I had a bit of a result actually with that shed burning down, because I was able toreplace it with an even bigger one twice the size!”

Oooh get you Ian with your big new shed. But what about the cremated one? Howshould Ian commemorate its untimely demise? A candlelit vigil in his back garden toremember all the gardening equipment that perished (a Flymo, some rakes and a pairof gardening shears from Notcutts amongst others) no, I’ve got a better idea.

The cremated garden shed ashes should be put in an urn and displayed in Ian’strophy room (aka his downstairs toilet). I have it on good authority that this is the onlyplace in his house where Mrs Gray lets him store all his old crap and the ‘Ashes’would be a great conversation piece on top of the toilet cistern being looked down onby a signed photo of the England cricket team.

THE ESP CARCOVER STARYou may have noticed the ESP promocars out and about at various eventsrecently. I was pleasantly surprised tosee one of them parked in SerpentineGreen the other day with Kelly Brooklaid across the bonnet! Sadly it wasn’tactually Kelly herself, just a picture ofthe front cover of ESP’s March editionwhich she adorned so stunningly…unlike last month’s cover star KatieMelua – who has a dimple in her chinso wide you could park all 9,000 ofthose bicycles in Beijing that shekeeps singing about.

How can any fan brought up onaction movies from the eighties notget giddy about this?

After seemingly ditching Rocky andRambo, Sly is back with a new petproject that ingeniously bringstogether some of the biggest starsfrom the genre.

And to top it off, Sly’s team ofmercenaries have names like LeeChristmas (Statham), Toll Road(UFC fighter Randy Couture) andHale Caesar (Terry Crews). Thatalone is worth the admission price.

Throw in Jet Li and Rocky IV co-starDolph Lundgren completing histeam; Eric Roberts and ex-WWEchamp Steve Austin on bad guyduties; Oscar-nominee Mickey

Rourke and Sly’s Planet Hollywoodbuddies Bruce Willis and ArnoldSchwarzenegger in cameo roles;and that should have any blokesalivating with anticipation. As longas it’s not complete rubbish ofcourse.

The only major action namemissing seems to be Jean-ClaudeVan Damme as the mercenarieshead to South America on a suicidemission to overthrow a dictator.

Just don’t expect many Oscarnominations.

His career might not havebeen the same since hearsed about on Oprah fouryears ago – declaring his lovefor Katie Holmes in theprocess – but ‘The Cruiser’still has more hits thanmisses for me.

His latest movie vehicle hasagain underperformed forhim Stateside – probablybecause it looks a bit like acomedic version of MissionImpossible – but with VanillaSky co-star Cameron Diaz onboard it could still hit the spotfor UK audiences.

In this comedy-actionerCruise and Diaz are a fugitivecouple trying to evadeSarsgaard’s (Flightplan)determined federal agent, inthis movie that’s been billedas a bright and breezy sliceof middle-of-the-roadsummer fun.

But compared to the oldCruise – who was a license toprint money – his box officeclout is like night and day.Sorry, I had to get that insomewhere.

SPLIT/SECOND:VELOCITY(X360/PS3/PSP/PC)Out nowThis just missed the last issue in ahead-to-head with the fantasticBlur – but I’m glad I didn’t have tochoose, because this is as equallyenthralling in different ways.

You could easily argue Split/Second has the fresherideas with this uniquely polished driving experience thatmakes up in ingenuity what it lacks in depth.

Take out your opponents with jaw-dropping explosionsgained by your on-track skills as racing goesHollywood. Hugely recommended.

SINGULARITY(X360/PS3/PC)Out nowWhat do you get if you crossFEAR 2, Dead Space, Metro2033 and Bioshock? A prettydecent first-person shootingexperience.

It’s not quite as good as any ofthe aforementioned, but this isstill up there with the best FPS’sof the year with its solid, horror-laden action as theRussians cover-up a catastrophic event.

It deserves to find an audience, despite complete lackof originality – and is one of my favourite games in thepast couple of months.

SNIPER: GHOSTWARRIOR(X360/PC)Out nowDespite some neat ideas thisnoble effort looks a couple ofyears out of date.

Some of the sniping experiencesthroughout the campaign –particularly with the Bullet Cam mode – will appeal toshooter fans, but it sadly has an unfinished look.

The basic mechanics are there, but with only okayishgraphics and a shoddy frame rate, this will fade into thebackground compared to first-person shooter genredefiners, despite the odd standout moment.

TIGER WOODSPGA TOUR 11(X360/PS3/Wii)Out nowThis yearly update would befurther up the pecking order if Iwasn’t repeating the same reviewI gave this time last year.

What more needs to be said? Itlooks great, plays great – has acouple of new controlimprovements like True-Aim – and is ultimately the bestnext-gen golfing package, bar none.

Even Tiger looks happy with life. But still loses a markbecause of only incremental changes.

CRACKDOWN 2(X360)Out nowPretty much coinciding with thelaunch of the new sleeker, quieter, bigger hard-drived, wi-fi andKinect motion controller-readyXbox 360 – familiarity slightlybreeds contempt.

This sequel sadly feels so closeto the first game it’s a rareMicrosoft game tinged with disappointment – even witha four-player co-op mode.

Fans will probably shrug that off though as you return toPacific City ten years after the original in this open-worldthird-personer, with a thick slice of fun to be had… evenwith the lack of ingenuity.

LEGO HARRYPOTTER:YEARS 1-4(X360/PS3/Wii/DS/PSP/PC)Out nowTalking of familiarity, you can’treally get away from a distinctfeeling of déjà-vu with lego-based games.

It does exactly what it says on the proverbial tin, andbehind Star Wars, edges out Batman and IndianaJones in the franchise stakes with good, solid family-friendly foundations.

It needs little explanation as Harry and all the Hogwartsfavourites get some spellbinding lego treatment – whichis as polished as the films.

TRANSFORMERS:WAR FORCYBERTRON(X360/PS3/Wii/DS/PC)Out nowFor ‘robots in disguise’ fanboys, there’s finally a game to getexcited about.

After the rubbish movie-based games, this flawed, third-person Metroid Prime-esque shooting experience – withnoteworthy multiplayer experience – is a huge step in theright direction.

The impressive choice of characters, coupled with adecent – if grim-looking – campaign, leaves thisOptimus Prime-d for enthusiasts.

TOY STORY 3(X360/PS3/WII/DS/PSP/PC)Out nowWonders will never cease. Arekids games actually starting toget better?

They used to be quite appallingaffairs, but this distinctly polishedeffort looks like it’s had some effort put in with a reallyimpressive co-op mode ideal for young ’uns.

The story mode proves to be a little more taxing thanusual as you play as Woody, Buzz and co, and with theToy Box side quests proving engaging, this is onelicense that has gone to infinity and beyond… but justfor kids.

SHREKFOREVER AFTER(X360/PS3/WII/DS/PSP/PC)Out nowThe difference between this andToy Story 3 echoes the samedifference in the quality of themovies.

Again, this shows mild improvements on previous Shrek-based video games – and with up to four-players anddecent puzzle-elements it will keep kids happy – butthere’s been dozens of nearly identical games before it.

It all comes down to whether they prefer the jolly greengiant to toys.

DEAR JOHN

(Channing Tatum,Amanda Seyfried)Released: August 23.

It’s not often you get a Phil Collins moment in lifeand quite frankly that’s a relief. I did howeverexperience a Live Aid Phil Collins moment albeit ona less grand scale last month.

The Rock And Bike Festival headline act wasVampire Rock featuring Toyah Wilcox, so we allwandered up to the stage (‘all’ will becomeapparent later) and stared skywards at the fastapproaching helicopter.

After a few suggestions of who it was we got boredand forgot about it. It then transpired that Toyah wasplaying on the Embankment in Peterborough on thesame Saturday she was playing at the Rock AndBike Festival. She opened one show and closed theother! Not quite transatlantic concorde but stillpretty rock ‘n’ roll!

Anyway the ‘all’ thing needs explaining. This festivalstarted out as just me and ‘her good self’ sloping offfor a quiet weekend, then two of her friends joinedin and then another two… and then another two, well one was her sister to split a hair.

Now you guys out there may think that’s heaven, one fella and seven women who are getting drunkerby the hour and out for a good time, hell no. Theyturned into a screeching, hollering, whoopin’ out oftune, singing bunch of cleavage flashers… My onlyinjury was bleeding and perforated ear drums butnonetheless it was interesting. Having seen enoughbreasts to fill the new Wembley my devilish plan ofaction was drink more. It worked.

Toyah Wilcox was great by the way, as was theVampire Rocks show, apparently there was a liveband on stage but I didn’t get past the dancers, don’t know why….

It was a great festival too at £25 for three nights, beer at £2 a can, great bands and friendly peopleit’s a must for next year. Bad Company playedSaturday night and they were awesome, a properrockin’ four piece, no frills just b*lls out rock, great!Cheers R&B fest, it was a blast.

August is a busy month all around. Locally theRandall Rootz Festival is on August 20 - 22. Fridaynight at the Brewery Tap sees the Dead Rabbitsheadlining which is a ticket do with all the moneyraised going to Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. Saturday& Sunday the whole festy shifts to Charters wheresome great bands are lined up. My favourites areThe Psycho Bombs, Filthy Lucre and the lovely BexMarshall on Saturday whilst Sunday has top cougarband Groove Cartel, the immensely talented Murray

Hockridge and old mate the John Russell Band. There are loads more bands, kids’ stuff andenvironmental stands and as its for Thorpe Hall, youhave to do it if you are around. If you want more infocheck out www.randallrootz.org

Long time favourite of mine, the Rhythm Festivaldown in Clapham Bedford is on the same weekendof Randall Rootz, August 20 – 22, and again has agreat line up including The Damned, 10cc, BillyBragg, Donovan, The Wailers, Arlo Guthrie, GenoWashington and Gandalf Murphy and theSlambovian Circus of Dreams to name a few. Set inthe stunning Twinwood arena, Rhythm is an all agesfestival of about 6,000 people which is a big enoughcrowd to feel vibrant but not that rammed that youcan’t do or see anything. With great views over theBedfordshire countryside, great beers, comedy, asolar powered cinema, storytelling and puppetry ithas something for everyone. Last time I looked onthe website there were only just over a thousandtickets left. It’s a cracker of a festival so book now oryou’ll probably miss out – www.rhythmfestival.nettells you everything you need to know.

OK I’m off to the ear clinic to get my drums weldedup, thanks ladies… it was a noisy pleasure!

Vibe from the underground... "Geoff Hayward of The Mark and Clash City Rockers fame has a similar taste in shirts to me, ice cool ones.We even thought of starting our own shirt club, the entry criteria being you had to have a cool shirt... fortunately we sobered up! Catch his cool one manshow instead at the Cellar Bar as part of their new Sunday evening music slots, Sunday August 8 at 8pm to be precise, mind you... he will be suitably shirtedI'm sure (try saying that when you’re pickled!) It’s a real family day outand music on the main stagecomes from Aladdinsane, The Pigs(Police tribute), Motor City Vipers,Mighty Quinn, One Eyed Cats, Halo,Dan Elliman and Simon Russell.

That’s a lot of top local talent

through the whole bill. It’s aparticular treat for the many fans ofBowie tribute band Aladdinsane, who are in the middle of a nationaltour supporting T-Rextacy, and aredoing this hometown gig to supportthose charities benefiting from theThorney Music Festival. It’s a greatway to finish the Bank Holidayweekend.

A RAFT OF LIVE MUSIC I always look forward to August because it features three of the area’sgreat social events which all have a considerable music influence and allof which generate important cash for their chosen charities. I’m referringto the Deepings Raft Race, Peterborough Beer Festival and ThorneyLive Music Festival. Each of them have their own unique charm andfingers crossed that the weather will smile on them all this year.

The Deepings Raft Race takes to the water on Sunday August 8featuring self constructed rafts which may float – and may not! These

are powered by crews of all ages and sizes dressed in some of themost bizarre outfits you’ll ever see on a weekend in the Deepings. The

races start around midday in Deeping St James and finish in MarketDeeping at the Coach House. It really is a spectacular sight and last yearattracted thousands to the town centre where there were lots for the wholefamily, including a mini fairground and craft stalls. Food and beverages arealways well catered for and the artists appearing this year are (withapproximate timings):

2.15pm Mauricky Collins, 3.30pm The Spirit, 4.45pm Bradley Caston,5.15pm The Guards, 6.30pm Big Grin and 7.45pm The Replicas.

All the bands are giving their time free to support this year’s raft race charitywhich is Help For Heroes. For all details on the raft race log on towww.deepingsraftrace.co.uk

THE LEGEND GOES ON Legend’s founder members are joining up to remember theirlead guitarist in a special tribute to Mick ‘Chelly’ Ciesielski on thetenth year since his death in 2000.

The band have had an interesting ten years since reforming thatyear purely to pay tribute to their old friend and they expected todo a one off gig at the Bourne Corn Exchange. That one-off gettogether has lasted ten years and now the original line-up havegot together again to do a one last time tribute to Mick.

The line-up is vocalist Bob Banks, lead guitarist Peter Mabbutt, bass Rob Hackett and on drums and backing vocals, Bill Pauley.

The gig’s taking place at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road onSaturday August 7 starting at 9pm and is sure to evoke a loadof great memories.

ALES AND TUNES @ BEER FEST Roll out the barrel for the Peterborough Beer Festival on theEmbankment from Tuesday August 24 to Saturday August 28.

Live music is a huge part of the event and there’s no shortagethis year with the following acts lined up:

Tuesday – Dr A’s Blues Consortium

Wednesday – Shake Hands Eric supported by The Whisky Jax

Thursday – Albany Down are the support and main act still to beannounced

Friday – The League of Mentalmen supported by The Replicas

Saturday – Tribute band Who’s Who with support from NimmingNed. Saturday also from 3pm you can catch Fallen Breaks, ProtoInferno, Smokescreen and Stringfinger performing half hour setsthroughout the afternoon.

There’s guaranteed to be somethingfor everyone and my highlight will bethe spectacular return of The LeagueOf Mentalmen on Friday night, afterlast year’s huge success. Theybrought the house down with aperformance that had the wholeplace rocking and thousands of beerglasses raised in salute after everysong. The band include Tim andPaul Mental, Mental Mickey and leadsinger Mental Rasty who explained

their act to me as – “taking classic songs and murderingthem…” Last year when I had the pleasure of bringing themonto the stage, Rastys description of the set was accurate(ballads played to a punk beat). The show was unforgettable

He tells me that a few new surprises are planned this year. Isuggest you be there for a big start and watch out for a –“Pistols/Gaga combination.”

I can’t wait for Friday night at the Beer Festival. See you there!

Details on www.peterborough-camra.org.uk and more on p.6 ofthis issue.

Hopefully you may have caughtme on the one month testbroadcast of RadioPeterborough. It’s just finishedand what a huge success it waswith a massive response fromlisteners who loved the musicand local themes. Anotherbroadcast of a similar nature willhopefully take place later in theyear and if you want to knowwhen then it would be a goodidea to register onwww.radiopeterborough.co.uk.

The broadcast was great funfrom beginning to end with theoccasional cock-up! My

favourite on-air moment was when I introduced the next song as one that inmy opinion was better performed by Citizen Smith at their local gigs than theoriginal recording. I was referring to Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, whichthey do perfectly. Unfortunately I mistakenly played The Nolans singing I’m InThe Mood For Dancing (a rock classic). This resulted in a phone call fromColin Smith on air to declare that he had never performed said song! I did tryto persuade him to try it as it could fit his vocal range and we left it underconsideration… So if anyone hears Smiffy singing it in a pub, at work or inthe bath please let me know immediately.

The Events field this summer

TAKE THE POWER BACK If you’ve ever done any of the following: worn skinny jeans and a ripped, offensive t-shirt, harboured a desire to torch the houses of parliament orjust nodded your head to a 3-minute guitar-fuelled burst of energy, thenyou NEED to get to Club Revolution, Park Road at some point this month.

The Infest Festival returns from August 5 – 14 and for the cheap price of£25 you’ll have the chance to see some well-known punk, metal andpsychobilly bands – not bad when you think that a ticket for Download was£150! Tickets for each night are available separately, but it works out a lotcheaper to get a full ticket.

With at least four bands every night, including huge names (if you’re intothis kind of thing) such as Anti-Nowhere League, Demented Are Go andAgnostic Front, this is your chance to stick two fingers up to thecorporation-infested festivals.

Then at the end of the month on August 27, The Meteors return to ClubRevolution. If you missed their last show back in February, don’t miss thisone. The originator’s of London’s psychobilly scene and still going strong30 years on, their live show is incendiary and the crowd they attract givesthe gigs an atmosphere like no other.

Tickets £8, for more info go to www.thepark4music.com

Liv Slater reports on the heavierside of the local live scene…

DIY ALLDAYER Club Dissident on Lincoln Road will be taking a break from electronicmusic on August 21, when No Gods, No Managers present No-Fest, awhole day of live music from 11 different bands with stalls and a BBQ.Bands booked include Milloy, Above Them, Sam Russo, The LivingDaylights and Andrew Cream – all playing punk-influenced music, rangingfrom straight-up singalongs to ska, crushing hardcore to gentle acoustic. As this is from a collective with a strict DIY ethos, the tickets are just £6.

ECLECTIC AND ELECTRIC @ MAMA’S Mama Liz’s in Stamford has another eclectic line-up this month, rangingfrom ballsy rock to world music. First up on August 6 is The BeautifulSleazy, supported by Smashcandy and Verax. The Beautiful Sleazy playswaggering, bluesy rock, which captures the spirit of the UK’s best-lovedbands.

On August 7, the Boomerang Returns presents Sean Taylor who’sappearing at this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival and his acoustic bluesare starting to get him a lot of attention – catch him while you can. He’ll besupported on the night by VanderVerse Priority, who’ll be bringing thesounds of the swamp to Stamford and none other than the legendaryJohn Litchfield – give him a tequila and watch him go!

Jez Hellard and the Roving Blades will be playing on August 13, and thisact definitely looks interesting. Jez himself plays the harmonica – coveringrebel ballads, improvising over gypsy jazz and generally doing things thatyou never thought possible with a mouth organ! AUSSIE RORY PUSHESPANTHERS TOWARDS TITLE

Cricket-loving Aussie Rory Schlein has the smileback on his face and Peterborough fans couldn’tbe happier as the mid-summer arrival fromCoventry’s helped turn the Panthers Speedwayteam into genuine title candidates.

Even Rory’s parents have noticed the differencein their son since his move to the East of EnglandShowground after he was told to get on his bikeby the Bees.

Dad Lyndon, in Britain for a three week holidayfrom their home down under, told ESP – “We’venever seen Rory look as happy as he does now– he’s a totally different person since he cameto Peterborough.

“He’s not only much happier himself – he’s riding better than he’s ever done.”

Schlein’s shock move, in a rider swap that took flop Lewis Bridger to Brandon, has transformed the Panthers’ camp and he’s helped them chalk up wins over

Phantoms new head coach CurtisCruickshank has made it clear that he’slooking for winners both on and off the iceas he starts to shape his side for the2010/2011 campaign which starts in mid-September.

Coach Cruickshank is new to ice hockeycoaching but has a wealth of experiencefrom playing at the top levels of the gameand is clear about the attributes that hewants from his team – "I want not only greatplayers but players who are committed to

winning and players ready to adapt theirgames in order for us to find the rightanswers on game night."

At the very heart of his team will be formerElite League Hull Stingrays colleague JeffGlowa who the Phantoms coach rates veryhighly – "Jeff is a heart and soul player thatcan do absolutely anything and everythingto help you win on every night. I think he'llbe a perfect fit with the players we havealready signed and I believe Jeff will proveto be the best all around player in the

league and one of the best characters inthe game as well and that’s a combinationthat you just cannot beat."

Phantoms defensive unit is already shapingup for the new season with standoutnetminder Stephen Wall one of the first toput pen to paper. Popular Bretton based D-man Dwayne Newman will be back in thecamp and he'll be joined by star of the2008/2009 treble-winning team, JamesHutchinson, who returns after playing lastseason in the Elite League. Also returning toPeterborough's blue-line will be formerSheffield Scimitars player Steve Duncombewho last wore Phantoms colours in their firstever English Premier League campaign.

Up front and looking to put big points on theboard will be regular faces Maris Ziedins,Tom Carlon, Joe Miller, James Spurr, WarrenTait and James Ferrara with new signing JeffGlowa boosting what is already aformidable looking strike force.

The club expect to make further signings inthe weeks ahead and you can keep up withall the latest news and secure your seasonticket for the new campaign atwww.peterboroughphantoms.com.

the top two, Poole and Wolverhampton. Now he’s ready to play his partin taking the club into the end-of-season play-offs as they put in a firmbid to be crowned Elite League champions for the first time since 2006.

Peterborough fans will be hoping that Schlein, who keeps fit by playingcricket for a local club near his Warwickshire home, comes back nextseason. Neither side are willing to discuss the matter publicly but the25-year-old from Darwin has dropped hints that he’d be willing to talkabout a more permanent move.

He admits – “I’m really enjoying life at the Showground. It’s no secretthat I fancied joining Peterborough last winter but nothing came of it.Then when I got the call to say I was being dropped by Coventry atthe end of May I always hoped there might be a chance of joining thePanthers.
