Kelly is the administra-tive assistant and the creative mind behind Esko’s Corner for Com-munity Education. She has worked in Esko for 11 years. Some of those years were spent in a dual role between the athletic office and the community educa-

tion office. Her favorite part of working here is

seeing all the members of the community come through the doors. She also has many visitors from the elementary school that stop by to say hi each week. Kelly graduated from Duluth Cen-tral High School then studied early childhood. She and her husband Brad have lived in Esko for 16 years. They raised three children who all graduated from Esko. Erin is a 2009 graduate and works in the health care field in Eden Prairie. Katyanna, a 2012 graduate works in marketing at Maurices corporate office, and Nick, who is attending NDSU and plays baseball there. Her favorite color is HOT pink and she loves hang-ing out with her family and friends in her spare time almost as much as she loves family group texts. Photography is her passion and she’s been fortunate to photograph many graduates of Esko. One thing not many people know about Kelly is that she was a sprinter in high school and partici-pated in the state track meet.

Patti has worked as the proof editor for Esko Corner since 1981. She began as a work study position while attend-ing Vo-Tech, working for Deb Laine who was the first community education director in Esko. Her favorite part of working with com-

munity education is seeing how the process of putting

together the paper has changed over the years. In the beginning, each article was typed up and was attached to paper grid sheets using adhesive spray. Clip art and borders were taped onto the grid. We progressed by getting a waxer to apply wax to the back of articles which made them eas-ier to reposition on the grid. Now, we use com-puters which make it much easier to make instant corrections and page changes. Patti graduated from Esko and went on to a general secretary course at Vo-tech. She lives with her husband in Carlton. Her favorite way to spend time while not working is watching he sunset over the lake, reading and spending time with family, especial-ly her great niece who is 3 and great nephew, age 1 1/2. One thing very few people know about Patti is that she enjoys family history and likes to keep in contact with all of her relatives.

2017…Great Year to be An Eskomo!Once again the Esko Winterquist Elementary students have proven to be HEART HEROS! Each year we try to reach a goal to save more lives than the previous year. In 2016 our 1-6th grade students raised $21,543. That was 430 lives. For our 2017 events Mrs. Vesel challenged the students with two goals. The first being able to get Mrs. Vesel to dress up like one of the Zoo Crew characters for a day by raising $12,000 or more online. They shattered this goal by raising $13,461 and Mrs. Vesel dressed like a Finnley Chillerton the Penguin. The second goal was to raise $25,000 total to be able to throw whip cream pies at Mrs. Vesel. Our K-6th grade students did an amazing job of saving 480 lives with a total of $24,091.64. Though we did not reach our Pie Throwing Goal…our school has once again rose to the challenge and became Heart Heros! These events help raise money to support the American Heart Asso-ciation’s research and education initiatives that save lives in our community. Congenital heart defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. Many children are alive today because of treatments not avail-able even 10 years ago. Funded research and advancements have changed and saved their lives and Esko had made a big difference! Special thanks to parents and staff members (Cynthia Johnson, Mrs. Thornton, Mrs. Halverson, Mrs. Pfister, Mrs. Ringat, Mrs. Hallsten, Mrs. Urie, Mr. Grover, Mrs. Piirainen, Mrs. Dewey and many others) that donated their time to help this event be successful!

Kids Plus

Kids plus has been at Esko School for almost 5 years. We partnered with Positive Energy Outdoors (a non-profit north of Duluth that pro-vide/teach outdoor activities to oth-ers) to create the program to provide a group for students where leader-ship and community based projects are done in a hope that is brings them awareness for their world, a sense of purpose and the idea that one person can accomplish much. One student said, «I thought Kids Plus would be totally boring, but it has been one of the best things this year!» Some of the things that we have accomplished this year include We Day, collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks, Christmas caroling at Barnes Care, bake sales, raising money for homeless people and having fun outside. One of the things that most students would say was their favorite would be We Day. It is a huge event geared towards students where they are

challenged to thin of «We» rather than «Me.» It has entertainment, famous speakers and motivation messages that all show the power of WE! It is a great way to hang out with thousands of other students across MN to get the year going. True or Treat is a WeDay initiate that we do during Halloween. It is held at St. Micheal’s church parking lot and we collect cans/boxes of food and then donate to a local food bank. We also give away candy (because who doesn’t like free candy) and dress up ourselves and the trunks of our car. One activity that is a great service to the community is Christmas caroling at Barnes Care in Esko They have 3 locations and we made cards, per-formed a small play and sang songs for the residents at each location. Students always feel a little appre-hensive about meeting older people, but at the end of the night, they all have smiling faces and realized what a blessing they were to those folks.

Baking is always fun too-mainly because we get to eat what we make (as long as it works out) More than half the group would say that baking was their favorite activity we do. We held a couple bake sales to rase money for our cause of homeless-ness. We try to choose a focus each year and all the fundraising efforts go towards that cause. We’ve made chocolate oatmeal cookies, choco-late chip cookies, blueberry muf-fins, and brownies. Some students also take it upon themselves to bake themselves at home to create cheese-cakes and bars. These guys are im-pressive! During one of our field trips this year, we visited LifeHouse in Dulu-th. It is a Incorporated in 1991, Life House has provided homeless and street youth ages 14-24 with uncon-ditional support, transitional housing, and a safe alternative to the streets for 25 years. Life House serves ap-proximately 700 unduplicated youth and 75 of their young children an-

nually. In 1996, Life House opened the first transitional living facility for homeless youth in Minnesota. The students had raised money from our bake sale for them and so we went to tour and give them out money. Many people just a bit older than some of the students were homeless. Anyone can be homeless, there is no «look» and everyone needs some help every once in a while. It was a good way for them to see what can be done and how people locally are helping. Our partnership with Positive Energy also helps us go outside. We usually try to go dog sledding in the winter and kayaking/canoeing or hiking in the spring. Every year is made up of different students. Some come and go throughout the year, which is fine. Kids Plus is geared towards 6th grade and up. It is a great opportunity to grow, be in charge, meet new people and help out others.

Meeting Minutes May 8, 2017

The meeting started at 6:30 with introductions. High attendance and several new faces, THANK YOU to everyone that is here. Nadine moved on to the trea-surer’s report. Ending balance as of 4/30/17 is $32,295.82 in the account and of that amount, $8,000.00 is ear-marked for the 2017-2018 teacher requests so there is $24,295.82 in the general fund. Remaining balance in the current teacher fund is $2,143.00. Yearbooks were ordered and only a few extras are left and will go fast. Delivery will be close to the last day of school. Heidi spoke with Chenoa (she does the magnet calendars for us) and she will do this again. We pay her $50.00 for her work. We or-der 1000 as the next lowest number is 500 and that is not enough for ev-eryone to get one. We will have Julie make sure they are correct before go-ing to print! It was a unanimous de-cision to keep the magnet calendars going again so look for them at open house! 5K registrations are coming in. Karen spoke with Michaud’s and they will be donating water again and Super One already agreed to donate bananas. Karen passed out a volunteer sign-up sheet and will do

a follow-up call with Officer Lake to ensure there will be an officer available to block off Hwy 61 when participants are crossing. Mr. Smith will set the mile markers out and Mr. Hallsten will be our pacer. We are still looking for a “sweeper” or “caboose” to be the last person in so we know when that person comes in there is no one left on the course. Mr. Barousse agreed to be that person. There was a question as to how much money does the 5K raise for PIE. Karen stated it is a small amount, usually around $500.00 but we have kept it going to encourage healthy activity and community support. Courtney asked if we get any spon-sors to increase profit. Karen stated we have not sought any sponsor do-nations since the playground was installed but a new committee could certainly take this in a new direction. Don’t forget to register before May 13th to ensure you get a t-shirt and vote for your teacher to win the trav-eling trophy! National Night Out will be on August 1st this year and Club’s Choice will once again bring the bouncy houses for us to use as a thank you for using them for our fall fundraiser. We are looking for vol-unteers to help with set-up, super-vising bounce times and tear-down. Mrs. Knutsen will talk to Michele Johnson to see if some NHS stu-dents would be available to help. Mr. Barousse will contact Fond Du Lac College to see if the police officer program would like some volunteer hours also. If you would like to help us with this, please contact Heidi or send us an email at [email protected]

Teacher Requests:1. Mr. Wick submitted a re-quest for the school patrol to go on their annual trip to Valleyfair. PIE covers the expense of this as a thank you to the kids that go out there ev-ery single day and ensure all of our walking kids cross busy intersec-tions safely, regardless of weather conditions. The estimated cost of this is $1,000.00 - $1,500.00. With little discussion a motion was made by Karen and a second by Kari this was voted on and passed. Thank you crossing guards for your dedicated service!!!2,3,4. Are all similar, so we com-bined them. Mrs. Harms submitted a $392.70 request for 2 Hokki stools and 3 stability wobble cushions. Miss Uecker submitted $147.52 for 2 NeoRok stools. The Kindergarten teachers submitted for either $418.00 for 8 chairs (2 per classroom) or $209.00 for 4 (1 per classroom). The kindergarten teachers were told to come back in the spring to let us know how the stools were working in their class and to see if there was any money left in the fund to cover more stools as they did do a large request at the beginning of the year and we approved a smaller amount at that time. There was a small dis-cussion after covering school patrol about how much money is left. Af-ter the discussion it was determined there will be enough money to pur-chase all the requested stools. Mrs. Harms request was adjusted down to $267.00 as Miss Uecker already has some of these stools and thought the original request was a little high. With the adjustment, the total for all stool requests came to $832.52 plus shipping. With a motion made by Emily and a second by Kristin this

was voted on and passed. 5. The Kindergarten teachers submit-ted a request for $245.22 to cover the bus expense for their field trip to the Duluth Zoo. Mrs. Knutsen did let us know if a choice needed to be made, the teachers agreed the stools were needed more. Mr. Harker let every-one know that in the past when gas prices were very high there were several requests for bus expenses and our group as a whole determined we did not want a majority of our dollars to pay for gas. He will work with the teachers and the bus garage to work out something to keep the fun field trip and not make it a burden on par-ents. So this request did not pass. Election of Officers: At the April meeting Emily nominated Mandy Dewey to shadow Karen for the co-chair position. With a motion by Kar-en and a second by Emily, this was voted on and passed. Heidi asked all in attendance if there was anyone in-terested in shadowing Nadine for the treasurer’s position. Courtney Gren-inger said she would be interested in that. With a motion by Emily and a second by Kari this was voted on and passed. Jess Oveson stated she would be willing to help also. Karen did state that the first year she and Nadine were officers they were co-treasurers. So with a nomination by Emily and a second by Amy this was voted on and passed. Courtney and Jess will co-chair the treasurer posi-tion.With no further items on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned. Upcoming Event:

National Night Out – August 1st

Next meeting: September 11 at 6:30!!!

for the summer. The first area that is being upgraded is the univents. Many of the univents are original to the building and are at least 20 years past their expected useful-ness. New rooftop air handling units will be installed that will move air throughout the buildings. This new HVAC system will be more efficient and will provide more fresh air. We are also updating plumbing, sinks and cabinetry in the the elementary classrooms. Winterquist Elementary will be getting some much needed updates which we are excited about.Summer Office HoursWith the HVAC and plumbing proj-ect taking place in the elementary this summer, our hours will be a bit inconsistent. The elementary office will be open until June 23. It will be closed until August 21. After the August 21, it will be open for the year. These dates are subject to change based on the progress of the project. We will be checking emails and voicemails throughout the sum-mer.

Senior Scholarships It is a great privilege to announce that the Class of 2017 has exceeded the 1.5 million dollar mark in academic scholar-

ships. At and since the annual Esko Educational Foundation scholarship night, held in May, over 1.5 million dollars in total scholarships have been presented to this year’s gradu-ating students. The EEF, alone, awarded approximately $65,000 in local foundation money to deserving Esko High School seniors. Educa-tion pays, literally!

Parents of Home Schooled or Pri-vate Schooled StudentsIf you are considering transferring your student into the public schools, we hope you will consider the Esko High School. We look forward to sitting down with you to discuss our programs and tour our facilities. If interested, please call the high school office at 879-4673. Esko High School is finalizing the course schedule and offerings for 2017-2018. Because of current class sizes, staff assignments

and budgets it is important for us to know how many students to expect in the fall. We will welcome your student into our school.

Summer School In an effort to enable Esko High School students the opportunity to recover lost credits and get appropri-ate academic remediation, summer school will be offered at the Clo-quet Area Educational Program from June through August. If your 7-12 grade student could benefit from our credit recovery program, contact high school counselor, Ms. Nicki Pe-terson at 879-4673 ext. 604 for more detailed information.

7th Grade OrientationSave the date! Current Esko 6th graders going into 7th grade in the Fall of 2017 are invited to attend 7th grade orientation at EHS on Wednes-day, August 30, 2017 from 9-11 a.m. An August letter will follow with de-tails about that event.

Congratulations to the Class of 2017The Esko High School Class of 2017 will be missed. Some of their nota-ble achievements include: This class of 85 students led the region in average ACT score---

amongst the highest college entrance exams in school history—this is re-ally saying something here at Esko High where state leading scores have become a matter of course. Not sur-prisingly, 100% of the enrolled se-niors are again graduating from Esko High School. The Class of 2017 both started and finished strong as they’ve topped the Arrowhead region’s 36 school districts in virtually all aca-demic measures each year from 3rd grade through 11th grade in math, reading, and science on the Minne-sota Comprehensive Assessments. Members of this senior class, won an array of conference, re-gional and state athletic, artistic, and academic titles over their four years at Esko High School, qualifying for state championship competition in football, boys and girls basketball, math team, visual arts, Destination Imagination, band, choir, softball and track and field Notably members of this class have represented our school on the international level. This year’s seniors twice competed in the the Robotics World Championships, es-tablishing the Esko Subzero Robot-ics Team as a interstate powerhouse. Together, the Class of 2017 earned more than 850 semester cred-

its in our College in the Schools pro-gram, saving their parents more than $750,000 in future college tuition. And---as a class they have received, to-date, in excess of 1.5 million dol-lars in academic college scholarships from local and national agencies---and their future universities. This year alone the Class of 2017 raised over $3500 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, donated 45 units of their blood to Memorial Blood Center, delivered holiday gifts to 48 Carlton County families in need, provided fall yard work assistance to a few dozen Esko senior citizens, and collectively spent hundreds of voluntary hours tutoring and mentoring elementary and junior high students. They built impactful relationships with young Eskomos---their second grade pen pals---through personal letters, and knocked the socks off area business leaders in our capstone mock inter-view exercise, Imagine It Day. I have no doubt that their exceptional success will continue at their future colleges, universities, and various educational programs from Fargo to Florida to Bemidji to Belgium and everywhere in between. For next fall 96% of them are en-rolled at 4 year universities, 2 year colleges, or are enlisted for military service.

Thank you to the Robotics Parent Volunteers, Chaperones and Sponsors!

SubZero Robotics competed at the World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, April 26-29. They com-peted in the Daly Division where they finished in 9th place out of 68 teams after qualification matches.

2017 Valedictorians

The Esko Educational Foundation held its annual Scholarship & Academic Award Night on Sunday, May 7, 2017 in the high school theater. Members of the Esko Class of 2017 were awarded over $60,000 in local and memo-rial Scholarships. The EEF selects scholarship recipients using a computer-ized point system. The Board takes into consideration: class rank, difficulty of courses taken, recommendations, community involvement and extracurricu-lar activities. Financial need is also a criteria for several of the scholarships. Students’ names are withheld from Board members until selections are com-pleted. Serving on the current 12 member board are: Mike Graves - President, Rollie Bockbrader - Treasurer, Robin O’Neill- Secretary, Cindy Kunz - Schol-arship Coordinator, Colleen Semerau, Brenda VanDell, Frank Liupakka, H. Phillip Powers, Cindy Purcell, Joyce Bergstedt, Brooke Pfister and Jeanette Laundergan . As the cost of higher education continues to escalate, the EEF is com-mitted to helping Esko graduates defray college expenses. A major fundraiser held every August is the Kristin Burkholder Memorial Run, which will be held this year on August 12th during the annual Esko Fun Days celebration. The Board also hosts a Spaghetti Dinner every November. The EEF wants to convey their deep appreciation to all who contrib-ute their time, talent, and dollars to fund these scholarships. Donations to the EEF are tax deductible and can be made at any time-in memory or honor of someone, as a thank you to an educator or as a way of giving back to the com-munity. All money goes directly to scholarships for Esko students. For further information you may contact Mike Graves at 348-8951 or Cindy Kunz at 591-6162. Please consider a tax deductible donation to the EEF in 2017!
