This documentary is a mix documentary as it contains range of elements interviews, archive, reconstructions and narration to support the evidence.

The documentary is about, crime, Alcatraz prison and the three prisoners who escaped the prison, Frank Lee Morris, Clarence and John Anglin. The narrative structure of this documentary opens up introducing what Alcatraz prison is. It showed archive photographs and films that were taken from the period of time when it was active. It also then introduces us to the three escape prisoners, Frank Lee Morris, Clarence and John Anglin and their criminal record. The exposition of this documentary then leads to the plan of the escape, where reconstruction of this was placed. It portrays exactly the details of the escape, including, how they did it, what equipment they have used and where they planned their escape. The documentary then ends with different police force and detectives looking for the three criminals. It also portrays the found equipment such as the life jacket, photographs and paddle the escapers used. It also implies to the audience their big search fot these three escapers and how still today the case is still open.

Within this documentary, long shot and birds eye shot was used when establishing Alcatraz prison, this was done to allow the audience to know exactly what it looks like and to also give an impression to the audience how difficult it is to escape the island. High angle shot was also used to portray the high power of authority. Close up was also used when portraying evidence of the used equipment such as the dummy heads and the files of the escape. This was done to enhance its important and to create a much effective and dramatic effect. Panning shot was also used when portraying the inside of the Alcatraz prison, this was done to make the audience feel like they are actually there .

Within this documentary, the mise en scene was set up in Alcatraz prison and officer’s work place. The mise en scene within this documentary is reflective to what the documentary is about. It was set in Alcatraz prison where the event actually took place. Interviews were also held outside prison bars to convey relatedness towards the theme of the documentary. The mise en scene also involves the shore where they found the equipment such as the paddles that were used by the escapers. The mise en scene also involves an insight to where the photographs of these three escapers were edited in a way that produces an image of what these three might actually look like right now. This is relevant as this piece of photographs are still used today in order to help find these escapers. The mise en scene also involves the place of the actual cemetery of the parents of the Anglin Brothers, where it was commented that they were seen on the day of the funeral.

Within this documentary, diagetic and non diageticsounds were used. For example non diagetic sound such as eerie and ditective like music was used at the beginning of the documentary to set up a mood / atmosphere. This was relevant as the theme of the music was a mystery of the escapers of Alctraz Prison. This eerie background music was also used throughout the documentary, specially when archive materials where being shown.

Diagetic sounds were then used throughout the documentary such as the interview and the narration of the documentary.

At the beginning of the documentary, montage were being portrayed. This montage consist of Alcatraz prison. This is relevant as the documentary reflects on the place. Fade in was also used when a new clip was portrayed, this was done to enhance a dramatic effect. Slow motion was also used in this documentary, specially when the reconstruction of the guards walking up and down the hall is being portrayed, this was done to create the documentary more dramatic; it almost gives the impression that when you are a prisoner in Alcatraz, everything is in slow motion; that it is being dragged on because you have been there at the same place for a number of years.

Simple editing technique was also used such as simple cuts.

Within this documentary a lot of graphics were used. For example at the beginning of the documentary, white, bolded texts were used when portraying the title of the documentary. Graphics such as old newspaper text were also used when portraying the names of the three prisoners who escaped Alcatraz was being portrayed. This was done to reflect on the fact this happened a long time ago. When interview were being portrayed, a white simple texts was used to inform the audience who they are and also what they are.

Fancy graphics was also then used when portraying a 3D blueprint escape plans of the three prisoners. It consisted of moving arrows and 3D blueprint pipes. This is relevant as it lets the audience knows how these prisoners has planned their escape.

Archive materials was used heavily in this documentary, this is because this event happened a long time ago. Archive materials such as black and white video of Alcatraz Prison was used to let the audience know exactly what it look like back then when the escaped happened. Archive materials such as black and white photographs of the prisoners was also used to let the audience know what they look like at the time of the event.

Reconstruction was heavily used in this documentary. This was done to recreate the story and to give a glimpse towards the audience exactly how the three prisoners escaped the prison. This is relevant as there were no actual footage of the three prisoners actually escaping. Reconstruction involves recreating the three prisoners making the equipment they need such as rafts, shows the prisoners how they made their dummy heads and how they actually escaped.
