There was actually three games taking place at exactly the same Ɵme across various secƟons of the eld, all overlapping, but seemingly coexisƟng very happily. Out of the corner of my eye, I noƟced a sliding tackle which probably was not as elegant as it should have been, which then resulted in a Grade 4 tumbling hard to the ground. In these situaƟons, there is always the quandary as an adult as to what role we should play, and when. If we intervene straight away, we become the person who always solves any potenƟal problems and remove the opportunity for our students to start to work through these situaƟons themselves, as invariably they will need to do as they get older and move into Middle and High school. If we don’t step in, we also can risk the situaƟon escalaƟng quickly into something potenƟally more physical. This type of scenario confronts teachers daily, both inside and outside of our classrooms, as we strive to gradually release responsibility to our students, whilst always wanƟng to set them up for success. So, I chose to wait, and watched from about Ōeen meters away, as invariably a crowd gathered around the fallen players and arms began to gesƟculate. AŌer much discussion, the fallen player hopped up, shook hands with the tackler, and democracy had decreed that a free kick be taken. The game restarted within a maƩer of seconds. What could have turned into something more, actually ended up providing an opportunity for our students to solve a real life issue themselves and demonstrate an increasing amount of independence. We have six disposiƟons at ISM which infuse our teaching and learning on a daily basis. These are : selfdirected creaƟve responsible balanced ethical caring We know these will never be assessed by any standardized test (such as our Measures of Academic Progress MAP test we have in Grades 3 and 4), nor should they be, but it is healthy to quesƟon, just what do these look like in real life for our students. Well for me, our students being able to selfregulate and work through potenƟally confrontaƟonal situaƟons, is a sign of these disposiƟons in acƟon.
