Architecture Talk Hugh O’Neill presents architects from the Netherlands working in 20th century Indonesia: in particular Herman Thomas Karsten. Hugh O’Neill was a member of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme to Indonesia from 1958 to 1960 designing and teaching in the Ministry of Public Works and Power and living with Javanese families in Jakarta and Bandung. In 1961 while working as an architect in London, he was appointed to a lectureship at The University of Melbourne responsible for First Year studies in Design and Communications and a new course on The Archi- tecture of Asian Societies. Since 2000 he has been a Senior Associate and, at Deakin University, an Adjunct Professor at The Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific. Continuing research in Indonesia and the Netherlands is about the impact of Dutch architecture in Indonesia during the twentieth century. Date: Tuesday May 12, at 7:30 for 8:00 PM. Thank you (Douwe) David Douwe Runia led our Erasmus Foundation as interim President in 2008. He did so with great flair and dedication. Erasmus staged six events all of which Douwe promoted enthusiastically while he presented ‘Philosophy in Action, Three concepts of pleasure’ in person. Thank you Douwe for a job well done. A chamber opera Rembrandt’s Wife by Andrew Ford & Sue Smith. A compelling story that explores the tragic relationships of one of the world’s greatest painters: his recently deceased, beloved wife Saskia, his vengeful lover Geertje and the sweetness of the housemaid Hendrickje, who will become his greatest muse. Dates: April 18 - 24 at various performance starting times. Venue: Victorian Opera at Merlyn Theatre, the CUB Malthouse. Love is like ‘Sinterklaas’: you have to believe in it, otherwise it will not work. Klaasje falls for a teenage Don Juan. Her best friend Simone seems happy with her own husband but her tenacious striving for perfection is beginning to take its toll on the marriage. Kiki is in love too, and enjoying her fling with Prince Valentijn. Kees and lifeguard Victor are in love. They intend to get married soon, but now Kees seems to be holding back. All the story-lines within this romantic comedy are linked. But sooner or later, every character ends up meeting Jan, the hero of this film, who, in his role of ‘Deus ex Machina’ (Sinterklaas?) sees to it that, in the end, love conquers all. This is a short summary of what is to come in our first screening this year of what we intend to become a tradition: Film from the Netherlands, once every two months, screened in Melbourne. Anyone with an interest in anything originating from the Netherlands, Good cinema, or both, is invited to come along to enjoy this hugely entertaining production.
