ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS• A set of methods and procedures for

aligning corporate strategies, policies and operations with principles that protect ecosystems.

It includes the organizational structure, planning and resources for developing, implementing and maintaining policy for environmental protection.

PLANIdentify Environmental Aspects

E.g. air pollutantsDetermine most important to company

E.g. worker health & safetyLegal and Other RequirementsObjectives and Targets

E.g. Objectives – Overall Goal, e.g. minimize useTarget – Detailed, Quantified, e.g. minimize by 10% by specific date

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENTIt is a formal process to predict the

environmental consequences of development activities, to plan measures to eliminate or reduce adverse effects and to augment positive effects.

Page 11: Environmental management sytems and processes

Baseline StudyPre-project or existing situation of

environmental components that are likely to be affected by the firms activity

EIA PROCESSAddresses all types of impacts-Direct &

Indirect, Long &Short,Visible & Invisible, Severity, Frequency.

3 PhasesInitial Enquiries(IEE)Full Environmental Impact Study(EIA) Environmental monitoring

Page 15: Environmental management sytems and processes

IEEUnderstand the objectives of the project-What are the

activities and why the activities are proposedStages:Forming Investigation TeamScreening to know environmental sensitivityTerms of Reference is developedAssessing potential impactsFormulating mitigating plansReports to decision making authorities and disclosure to

redesign project. If no significant impact project passes through IEE and

funds are committed

Page 16: Environmental management sytems and processes

Full EIA Study Reserved for activities when screening or IEE shows significant

impacts. It involves greater efforts and in-depth assessment. Information gathered from IEE are used to prepare terms of

reference for the EIA.

Tools & Techniques of EIA Environmental impact metrics Checklists with data collection sheets and questions. Venn Diagram, Mathematical modelling and flow quantities,

Regression analysis. Expert advice through Delphi technique to estimate socio-cultural

changes Economic techniques to find out cost benefit ratio Environmental health impact assessment

Environmental Impact MitigationMitigation is the implementation of measures designed to

reduce the undesirable effect of a proposed action on the environment.

3 TypesPrevention and control measures: Changing site, changing

raw material, abandoning the project.Compensatory measures: Making improvement at some

other places or domain in order to offset the environmental impact in one area.

Remediation measures: Restoration of the environment after the damage is done. Eg Mining site is restored by planting trees to prevent soil erosion, Clean Ganga Campaign.

Page 18: Environmental management sytems and processes

Environmental MonitoringFormal measurement of key environmental

indicators over the affected area over time in order to identify deviations. It also includes

Effectiveness of Mitigation measuresIndicators of environmental health and

ecosystem functions are also measured

Page 19: Environmental management sytems and processes

Environmental Audit(EA)Pre Audit activitiesTraining of employees, external relations with community,

pollution treatment and discharges, Effective use of resources etc.

Audit Activities at siteUndestand the reality, Questionnaires, survey, discussions etc.

Post-Audit activities:Collected data is coded and tabulatedDraft report is preparedFinal audit report prepared for critical decisions even to the

level of making changes in the environmental policy.

Page 20: Environmental management sytems and processes

Types of AuditDecision Point Audit: Effectiveness of EIA Impact on project Audit –studies change in environment

due to project.Predictive technique audit: Actual Vs Predicted. Examines

the accuracy of techniques used.EIA procedure Audit : effectiveness of methods.Certification Audits –ISO,LEED etcEfficiency Audit: Energy use, water use, paper

recycling etc.Performance Audit: examines whether the individuals

and agencies in project management did their roles in a responsible manner.

Travis Perkins chose ISO 14001 as the basis of its Environmental Management System because this standard:

• Is internationally recognized and respected

• Involves regular independent audits

The Travis Perkins ISO 14001 EMS consists of several linked components.
