Tobias Katz (Industrial Design, 2017) had a big idea: a tiny home that can grow (or shrink) as its owner’s lifestyle changes. So he created a full-size model, supported by more than $30,000 in donations from companies hailing from as far away as Australia.

We’re a top city for equality. In fact, the Human Rights Campaign gave us a perfect score.15

And we’re smart, too. So smart that we won first place and $50 million in a nationwide contest to bring smart transportation to the city.16

ARTS DISTRICTS

CCAD’s influence is apparent in Franklinton, Columbus’ oldest neighborhood. The arts district is packed with affordable artist studios (like 400 West Rich), emerging galleries, and countless high-tech design companies — all of which are filled with CCAD alumni and students. From Franklinton Fridays — a monthly gallery walk — to the Artists Wrestling League, something new and quirky is always happening here.

The Short North Arts District, just five minutes from campus, is home to 16 galleries. It’s anchored by the North Market, a renowned space featuring award-winning, locally made artisanal fare. With music venues, international dining options, and cozy coffee shops throughout the area, there’s always something to do in the Short North. (Don’t miss Gallery Hop on the first Saturday of every month or HighBall Halloween, the country’s largest costume party.)

There are lots of opportunities here for you to make your mark. And you’ll be in good company because CCAD students are at the forefront of the city’s creative economy.

4 MARSHALL SHORTSClass of 2006, Industrial Design,Advertising & Graphic DesignCo-Founder, Creative Control FestOwner, Soulo Theory Creative

CCAD taught me valuable lessons in and out of the classroom. Above all else, the relationships I made (there) have been the most impactful. At Creative Control Fest, we are able to involve students from CCAD, specifically the Black Student Leadership Association, a group we started while in school. Hard work, relationships, and disrupting different spaces ultimately create opportunities.

1 KELSEY MCCLELLANClass of 2012, PhotographyFreelance PhotographerWinner 2017 Photo District News Objects of Desire contest

In addition to instilling the importance of relationships with peers and mentors, CCAD developed in me the essential mindset of persistence, improvement, (over)preparedness, and positivity in my work as a freelancer.

2 BROOKS MYERSClass of 2005, Industrial DesignCEO, Knockout Concepts

CCAD is an easy transition, especially if you come from a rural area like I did. They like to say it's a big city with a small-town feel. It's a city you can grow into if you want to stay after school, settle in, start your own business, maybe work for some cool design agencies, UI or UX companies, … or Knockout Concepts.

3 WES TALBOTTClass of 2005, IllustrationSenior Designer Specialist, LEGO Group

I really value the skill of critiquing and receiving critiques that CCAD instilled in me. It can be a very tricky subject, especially when working with people of different cultures and nationalities. It's an area that I feel I am still learning every day how to act more professionally with my team and others around me. I think CCAD established a good foundation for that in the classroom critiques.

““

Our alumni have gone on to start their own businesses, work at big-name companies, and use their art and design degrees in all sorts of ways. Check out a few of their stories.

@thebriankellett

As a student at CCAD, Emily Brown worked on a project for a professional horticulture group and learned that garden stores were having a hard time reaching young people like her.

Inspired by what she learned in the classroom, Emily decided to do something about it. She talked to her boyfriend, CCAD grad Brian Kellett, and together they opened a store that treats plants like living installations. “I like to call us a plant lifestyle store,” Emily said.

The couple used the design and photography skills they learned at CCAD to create a swoon-worthy Instagram account ( @stumpplants) and make their stores (they now have two locations) look more like galleries than garden centers.

MIKE ALTMANClass of 2000, AnimationCharacter Technical Director, Pixar

@pixarmike

After immigrating to the U.S. from Ukraine as a toddler in 1979, Mike Altman grew up feeling grateful to his parents for giving him a better life. Since then, Mike has become a huge star in the world of animation. He’s currently the Character Technical Director at Pixar. His work can be seen in the hit films Cars 2 and Inside Out, which he worked on for two years before the film won an Oscar.

“When (writer) Pete Docter accepted the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film for Inside Out,” Mike said, “it was one of the most exciting moments in my career.”

Those kinds of career milestones wouldn’t be possible if not for Mike’s time at CCAD.

“At CCAD, the training and education Ireceived set me on the path toward my career,” Mike said. CCAD “allowed me to make the professional connections that have gotten me interviews and jobs over the years, and most fundamentally it gave me the foundation of my artistic view of design.”

As Jennifer Lena, a senior research scholar for the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project, told Forbes, “There’s a ton of evidence that prospects for graduates from art schools today are better than they’ve ever been before in terms of income, their ability to survive economic turbulence and their preparedness for the job market of the 2020s.”“Why Art School Can Be A Smart Career Move,” Forbes, Aug. 15, 2015

Essay for Chroma: Best of CCAD

Chloe Sommer, Class of 2017Review of student work

Many of the works in Chroma share a common theme in the materials they use. The pieces are linked by their use of industrial and discarded, or recycled materials. One artist’s work utilizes giant advertising tarps to create collage on an industrial scale. A different artist has used heavy grade wire to create line drawings in midair. A third has used plastic grocery bags to weave giant wall tapestries. Another creates a kind of honeycomb nest using torn cardboard. All of these can be attributed to the growing worry, worldwide and in the artistic community, of global pollution, industrialization, and climate change. These works address the issues of our overconsumption and waste. They also bring up the important question: What do we do with all of our trash? Addressing this and other questions — and creating answers — are what these works have done.

Body Art

Liz McManus, Class of 2017Print, paint, drawing, sculpting

At a time in which most students think to become retrospective and deliberate upon how the teachings over the previous years have shaped their art, this year many senior Fine Arts students chose to reflect inwardly for inspiration. Introspective examinations of what makes up their own self were recurrent motifs of senior shows, all tackled in contrasting approaches that cause the viewer to question their own makings.

Liz McManus’ mixed media thesis show explored the aesthetic arrangements of cells and the internal workings of the human body. With a loosened application of color along with the complexity of detailed textures, her work creates an abstracted universe within the realms of scientific study.

Jenni Mykrantz also presented images of internal functions through her projections of three dimensional representations of the artist’s own pelvic bones and organs. The presence of these medical scans creates a question of the divide between the emotional and clinical appearance of female anatomy.

Presented in collaboration with Mykrantz’s projections were Tyler Gaca’s paintings. His show creates an alternate universe that divulged from the creation of an alter ego from within himself. The heavily saturated paintings become windows for the viewer to see this universe and recognize the fluidity of identity.

Our designers are inventors, innovators, and game changers. We reimagine and execute the design of everything from boats and bicycles to shoes, water bottles, and other everyday products.

Our graduates go on to design commercial equipment, electronics, furniture, garments, housewares, industrial tools, interaction, medical devices, personal products, retail displays, shoes, sports equipment, toys, trade exhibits, user experience, user interface, and vehicles.

INTERIOR DESIGN

CREATE SPACES THAT BENEFIT PEOPLE.

You’re not a decorator — you’re a designer who’s changing the way we interact and engage with our built environment. In our Interior Design program, you’ll solve social problems and design spaces that change the way people live, work, and engage with one another. Courses in hand-sketching, computer modeling, and communications will translate your vision into a wide range of spaces and industries. And our collaborative classroom projects with local and national brands (like Wolf’s Ridge Brewing and Airstream) will give you opportunities to design a variety of types of projects and have your research, planning, and design work used early in your career.

Our students go on to work at architecture and interior design firms and retail design agencies. They work as visual merchandisers, space planners, furniture designers, staging specialists, and textile designers. The flexibility of the interior design discipline also allows students to explore work as design researchers, design strategists, lighting designers, and sustainability consultants.

FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION

At CCAD, we want every student to have the opportunity to pursue their passion.

What’s Available

Funding your education at CCAD may come from several primary sources. Our final award package may be composed of scholarships, grants, loans, and student employment. Each student award package is different, and we encourage you to explore all the funding options available to you. Please keep in mind that some types of financial aid you may have to repay after graduation, while others may not require repayment.

For the most up-to-date information, visit ccad.edu/finaid.

Grants & Scholarships

CCAD Scholarships

Each year, we award renewable scholarships to incoming students. These scholarships may be based on the quality of the overall application. CCAD awards institutional dollars to support scholarships for students who demonstrate particular levels of engagement in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, and National Art Honor Society. Students must submit documentation during the application process.

External Scholarships

Many organizations and agencies offer scholarships to students looking to attend college. It is important to explore all of the options that are out there. CCAD will recognize most external scholarships applicants bring to the college. Ask your teachers, college counselors, and friends about resources to explore external scholarships.

CCAD Grants

CCAD offers grants based on students' financial need, calculated once they have submitted their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Federal Pell Grant

This grant is awarded by the federal government to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. To be eligible, students need to complete the FAFSA and be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

To be considered for this grant, students must fill out the FAFSA. Students who will receive Federal Pell Grants and have the most financial need are given first priority for this grant.

Page 124: ensure the full realization of equal opportunity for all students and … · 2019. 12. 18. · of Goosebumps, Columbus Blue Jackets, the only topiary representation of a painting

Employment & Loans

Student Employment

On-campus employment through the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is part of many CCAD students’ financial aid packages. Students may work up to 15 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer and holiday breaks. Students are considered for this when they submit the FAFSA.

Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

PLUS loan are federal loans that parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay education expenses. The U.S. Department of Education makes Direct PLUS Loans to eligible borrowers through schools participating in the Direct Loan Program. Contact our Financial Aid office for more information.

Federal Direct Student Loan

These federal student loans help cover the cost of higher education. The U.S. Department of Education offers eligible students at participating schools Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans — some people refer to these loans as Stafford Loans or Direct Stafford Loans. Students are considered for this when they submit the FAFSA.

Alternative/Private Student Loans

Private lenders can provide loans to fill gaps between a student’s financial aid package and their total educational costs. These loans can be used for more than just tuition, including expenses such as room and board, travel, off-campus study, computers and art supplies. Contact our Financial Aid office for more information.

Federal Perkins Loan

The Federal Perkins Loan Program offers low-interest federal student loans to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Students are considered for this when they submit the FAFSA.

Here are a few other options to help pay for school. Generally there are additional steps you’ll need to take to receive the support. And if you take out a loan, it must be repaid.

Veterans

Financial Aid Application

International Students

Veterans’ Benefits

CCAD is approved by the State Approving Agency and the Veterans Administration for educational benefits for veterans.

How to Apply for Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the foundation of the financial aid process here at CCAD, and completing it is essential to receiving a formal financial aid package. We encourage all U.S. citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) to apply for financial aid using the FAFSA — unless you are sure you will be paying fully out of personal resources.

International Student Aid

International students (non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents/green card holders) enrich the CCAD learning and living communities. International applicants will be automatically considered for CCAD scholarships when they submit their application. However, CCAD is not able to award any other form of aid to international

students. A declaration of finances (demonstration of ability to pay) will be required for any international student who wishes to enroll at CCAD. The United States government requires us to state that international students must realistically plan to meet their educational expenses throughout their academic career.ccad.edu/international

Complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov. Choose CCAD as a recipient of the results by using our FAFSA Code: 003039.

Part Three / History of CCAD

We got our start in 1879 — and people have been raving about us ever since. Even Oscar Wilde, when he stopped in Columbus in 1882, said he was impressed that “the capital city (has) a leading art school.”

Here's a look at some memorable moments and milestones in CCAD's history.

1879

Columbus College of Art & Design is founded. (Back then, we were known as the Columbus Art School.)

Classes are so popular our first year that First Lady Lucy Hayes, wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, visits the school in our second year.

1882

Writer Oscar Wilde travels to Columbus and in a public lecture declares he's impressed that "the capital city (has) a leading art school."

1885

The first class of students graduate from CCAD.

1930

We build Beaton Hall, the first facility constructed just for the school. It has no windows on the south side because, according to CCAD alum Bill Arter, "artists prefer to face north."

1936

Georgia O'Keeffe visitsthe school.

1952

Joseph Canzani becomes the school's leader. He would oversee rapid growth and change, beginning with the addition of a diploma program requiring 120 semester credit hours of work and a mandatory GPA of 2.0.

1950s

We add a number of programs, including advertising, industrial design, and illustration.

1959

We officially change our name to Columbus College of Art & Design.

1970

The first class of CCAD students with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees graduates.

1979

Joseph Canzani becomes the college's first President.

1985

We open our firstresidence hall.

Page 129: ensure the full realization of equal opportunity for all students and … · 2019. 12. 18. · of Goosebumps, Columbus Blue Jackets, the only topiary representation of a painting

1987

We add animation andvideo programs, building our reputation as a hubfor designers.

1993

The Joseph V. Canzani Center is built, givingCCAD our first dedicated gallery and auditorium.

1998

Artist and leader Denny Griffith is named President of CCAD. Over the next 16 years, until his retirementin 2014, he would lead the college through transformational change.

Griffith expanded our campus, oversaw the installation of our 10-story ART sign, and helped develop our first graduate degree.

2001

We added to the city's skyline with an iconic 100-foot tall metal ART sign.

2000s

Student services and organizations expand across campus.

2010

CCAD launches its first graduate program, the Master of Fine Arts degree.

2012

The first MFA class graduates.

2013

The Tad Jeffrey FabLab is built. This state-of-the-art fabrication space houses3D printers, laser cutters, and machining equipment.

2016

Dr. Melanie Corn is named first female President of CCAD.

Part Three / How to Apply

In 2013, an anonymous pair of CCAD students began sneaking into classrooms and creating intricate chalk drawings on blackboards around campus. The secret perpetrators called themselves Dangerdust. And even after they graduated, the name — and their anonymity — stuck. The mysterious duo now sell their chalk art online and do work for big-name companies like Target.

My team is incredibly diverse and an absolute

pleasure to work with. We are from all over

the world, each bringing a unique viewpoint in

terms of culture and play. We jest, laugh, get

down on the floor with the prototypes, and try

to think like kids as much as our boring adult-

brains can manage.
