Walking in nature

You'll find the most green landscape in the Lys Valley here, between the rivers Lys and Scheldt. The woods and fields of Anzegem, Avelgem, Deerlijk, Spiere-Helkijn and Zwevegem are perfectly framed by the Lys and Scheldt and the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal. It is the ideal region for walking, all year round and it's known for the beautiful nature of the Scheldt marshes in Avelgem. You can taste the authenticity of the region in the landscapes, the people and, of course, the delicious farm products!

IN LITERARY SPHERES

You sometimes hear people say: “there's something in the air” and that is true here. Artists and writers find inspiration in the landscape, the nature and the peace and quiet.

Stijn Streuvels built his house in the middle of it all. Het Lijsternest in Ingooigem is now a museum and residence for talented writers who are looking for inspiration.

The house of author-poet René De Clercq is located in Deerlijk.

COUNTRYSIDE AT ITS MOST BEAUTIFUL

The Land van Streuvels shows you the fields and slow roads (for non-motorised traffic) around Anzegem and Zwevegem. This 9 km loop starts at Domain Sint-Arnoldus in Tiegem. In the spring the woods are covered with a beautiful purple carpet of bluebells. Along the way you'll find Het Lijsternest and De Sterhoekhoeve.

WALKING WITH NODES

The area between the Lys and Scheldt is a green sanctuary in the lively Lys Valley. Two valuable walking networks, which combine the safest and most beautiful walking paths, prove this.

TO THE RHYTHM OF THE SCHELDT

In the Land van Mortagne you saunter through woods and past river banks in Bellegem, Zwevegem, Bossuit and Spiere. This 9.3 km loop starts at the church in Spiere and takes you along the Scheldt to Helkijn.

REMARKABLE RIVER BANK SPOTS!

Between the Lys and Scheldt you'll spot a few remarkable buildings near the water. Along the canal in Zwevegem you'll find Transfo, an old power station from 1911. It is recognisable from afar!

A bit further stands the former pump building in Bossuit; it provided the canal with water from the Scheldt.

In Spiere, along the Scheldt, you'll find the remains of an open-air swimming pool. The structure was intended as a water treatment plant but those plans fell through…

TIP! In the Provincial Domain De Gavers you can walk, cycle

or try adventurous sports. There are two cafeterias on the domain and a playground for the kids.

VISIT A FARM WITH CHILDREN

The fields and pastures in this region demonstrate lots of diligent agricultural work. But much more is hiding behind the façades of the farmhouses. At children's farms such as Bokkeslot in Deerlijk, Achiel en Hector in Tiegem and ’t Herreke in Heestert little ones can become acquainted with farm life. Hof ’t Klokhuis in Sint-Denijs makes delicious, artisanal fruit juices and apple cider.
