INTRODUCING THE PLANTED BIOLOGICAL REACTOR (PBR)®
A HYBRID MBBR & WETLAND WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM
What is a Planted Bed Bioreactor?
• A versatile, natural, economical and ecological “on-site” wastewater treatment and water re-use system
• Used for large and small flow “cluster” and communal treatment systems (can be sized like lego pieces to adapt to virtually any environment)
• A 2 component hybrid of MBBR and advanced wetland treatment technologies
• Able to treat all kinds of wastewaters to well below most regulatory limits
• Unlimited lifecycle with easy operation and low maintenance costs
Planted Biological Reactor
Can be designed to any shape required and the surface planting material
Becomes an integral aesthetic part of the landscaping
The PBR system is a custom designed flexible insulated concrete form with 2 divisions creating 3 chambers
HOW PBR TREATMENT WORKS• The system consists of two parts, each with 3-chamber components. • The system is capable of treating to less than 10 for CBOD & TSS• An additional treatment component is able to reduce nitrogen to less
than 10 TN mg / litre• Moving Bed Bioreactors (MBBR) biologically treat wastewater by
circulating moving media in aerobic and anaerobic microbial environments.
HOW IT WORKS
PBR TREATMENT DETAILS• An Anoxic tank is used for recycling the effluent for de-nitrification• An Anaerobic bacterium consumes the nitrate producing N2 gas • BOD is knocked down in the first stage of the MBBR treatment • Ammonia is converted to nitrate in the 2nd state of the MBBR treatment• The BAM (Botanical Aeration) is shallow (1 foot beneath water level) for full
nitrification• Solids generated in the MBBR will attach to plant roots and be consumed• Any additional sludge will settle out and be removed annually• An upflow wetland filter is used to “polish” effluent and remove any remaining
solids and consume the balance of oxygen• Treated effluent is sent to a De-Nitrification tank before disposal
De-NitrificationADDITIONAL DENITIRIFICATION• To achieve greater de-nitrification to less than 1mg/litre an additional component
is required• An additional treatment tank is dosed with a carbon source to facilitate biological
removal through the carbon.
PLANTS• Plants enhance biological remediation of organic contaminants found in wastewater
by increasing the population density of microorganisms in the growing media. • MBBR systems are an ideal treatment solution for high-strength wastewater or
siting applications requiring a compact physical footprint
• Upgrading existing treatment plants into MBBR systems can greatly enhance biological nitrogen removal (BNR) – expanding treatment capacity and improving effluent quality with minimal additional footprint expansion.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCEESTIMATED FLOW: 1,500 – 2,000 GPD
TREATMENT AREA: 10’X20’ (approximately)
ESTIMATED OPERATION & MAINTENANCE COSTS$2,500 (estimated)TESTING: (to be determined by permitting)POWER: $1,460$4 /day (17.5/kw hr) for 2 pumps and blower
NOTES:
Cost estimates are for treatment system and do not include disposal area and conveyance from TNC buildings to treatment area and from treatment area to disposal
TNC staff could be trained to perform most operational requirements and conduct testingDisposal areas are assumed to be in placeCost of Dosing Tanks (if required) X2 @ $2/Gallon $10,000Estimated Conveyance (Force main & Trench) $20/Linear Foot
The costs indicated are estimated for planning purposes only and should not be construed as final cost. Final costs will be based on permitting requirements and other planning factors
Who We Are
Renewage LLC is an ecological water treatment consultant, working with a wide variety of innovative “bio- mimicry” wastewater and stormwater practices that provide water quality improvement and hazard mitigation
Renewage services de-centralized residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural businesses and communities. Renewage LLC was founded in 2009 and has offices in Bridgehampton New.
Renewage and it's team partners (EcoSolutions LLC) have designed, built, installed and manage numerous projects in many areas of the United States, Canada and around the world
Renewage is a network of innovative, leading engineers, environmental scientists, planners, academics, architects, whose objective is to provide economical and ecological stormwater and wastewater treatments
Renewage uses Best Management Practices that have low operational costs and unlimited life cycles. These technologies support new “smart growth” development, and "green" remediation of older treatment infrastructure. Renewage technologies are designed to provide a positive cost / benefit and return to users
David Whitney PEThe lead engineer and of EcoSolutions, a world leader in environmental and ecological design and a principal PE with Renewage. Mr. Whitney has designed and installed many innovative hydrology systems and practices in the US and around the world. His vision is integrated design that combines function and aesthetics by matching infrastructure to the landscape. David Whitney provides integrated solutions for low impact design development, waste and stormwater treatment.
