English Language ProgramThe University of Winnipeg English Language Program welcomes more than 450 students from more than 30 countries each year. We offer a variety of programs: Academic and General English, Short Term Intensive English, Canadian Work Experience, ESL Teacher Certificate, and Customized Programs. We are accredited by Languages Canada and are an authorized CanTEST (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees) and TOEIC ® (Test of English for International Communication) test centre.

Homestay Application $200 Submit this one-time placement fee & Placement Fee with your homestay application form. *

Homestay Fee $700 Includes airport pick-up, private bedroom, shared bathroom, and food (monthly rate quoted).

Total $900 Total for first month fees. Months following will be $700. After 105 days, fee will be reduced to $675 per month.

* Students in the 14-week program are placed for 105 days. $200 placement fee is charged only once, at point of application. Fees subject to change. Fees in Canadian dollars.

Homestay Live with an English-speaking host family in Winnipeg. Homestay is a great way to share in lively and friendly discussions in English, learn about Canadian home life and culture, and improve your level of conversational English.

Short Term Intensive English Programs These programs are for students who want a short, intensive English language learning experience to help advance their educational or career goals.

These programs are designed for accelerated communication development with classes that focus on the core skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; conversation classes to build vocabulary; and workshops that improve speaking ability and focus on a variety of cultural and academic topics.

This program is a seven-week English program with an unpaid work placement component. Students will study English for four weeks, followed by a three-week volunteer placement. Students will have the opportunity to speak English in a Canadian work setting.

Examples of recent work placements include: architecture firms, museums, libraries, radio stations, youth centres, athletic facilities, art galleries, health care facilities, restaurants, retail stores and non-profit businesses.

RECOMMENDED LANGUAGE LEVEL: TOEFL: iBT 61

IELTS: 5.5 overall

This 14 - week program enables students to advance their English language skills for personal and professional development. Our in-depth program focuses on developing fluency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students participate in a variety of seminars such as Business English, TOEFL Preparation, TOEIC Preparation, Conversation, Listening and Pronunciation.

NOTE: Students entering either program at a low – intermediate level will begin in the Foundations Stream of the program.

General English Program

This 14-week program focuses on integrated skills. The morning classes have a strong emphasis on oral communication, vocabulary acquisition, and grammatical development, which are integral skills for linguistic progress. Afternoon classes focus on grammatical structures and reading skills. Our program prepares students for further studies in the General and Academic Streams.

Foundations English Program

Academic/Pathway English Program

This 14-week program prepares students to enter Canadian universities, colleges, and high schools. Our program targets all four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students improve their ability to read academic material, write essays, take notes, listen to lectures, and give presentations.

With the successful completion of the highest level of the Academic/Pathway English Program, students will:

✓ Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement for The University of Winnipeg’s undergraduate degree programs and select graduate programs

✓ Earn six university credit hours that can be applied to further study at The University of Winnipeg

Your Program, Your WayStudents can transfer between the Academic and General Programs during their studies with no additional costs or fees.** Transfer between streams may be done at the beginning of a new 14-week term.

The English as a Second Language Teacher Certificate Program (ESLTCP) is a University of Winnipeg program that certifies graduates to teach ESL to adults both in Canada and overseas. Programming is available on a full-time and part-time basis and can be completed either online or in-person. For groups of 10 or more, we can develop and deliver custom programming to meet your specific needs.

The certificate program consists of:

• 120 hours of TESL theory and methodology (delivered in a classroom or online format)

• 10 hours of observation in an ESL classroom*

• 10 hours of teaching in a supervised practicum*

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: All applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting official documentation for one of the following tests:

TOEFL iBT: 80 overall minimum score of 20 in each area

IELTS: 6.5 overall

CanTEST: Listening, Reading, Writing 5; Speaking 4.5

Canadian high school graduation: minimum 70% in grade 12 English*

Completion of an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking university*

Completion of The University of Winnipeg Academic English Program: A5 level

Graduates of the ESLTCP who hold a degree from an accredited university are eligible for Professional Certificate Standard One.
