Conditional admissions for undergraduate students

Through Academic Transitions (AT), students with excellent academic backgrounds can be conditionally accepted to an undergraduate program at the University of Delaware. Improve your academic English skills at the ELI while earning valuable university credits! After students meet the conditions of their admission via AT, they will take full-time university coursework and keep the credits they earned (in which their grades are C+ or higher) while studying at ELI.

Academic transitions

Features of ATFocus on campus engagement and cultureIn AT, we emphasize a complete student experience through fun and enriching experiences outside of the classroom, such as joining student organizations and participating in activities on campus.

Resources for your successSince AT is a challenging program, we provide many resources to help you be successful, including:

• university student and faculty mentors,

• academic advisors,

• Academic Success Centers,

• private tutoring,

• computer assisted instruction,

• individualized education plans, and more.

Innovative “Cohort” curriculumThis unique curriculum helps you develop the academic, leadership and social skills needed for success at the university level.

Housing with AmericansAll Pre-AT and AT students are required to live with Americans. Depending on your English level and the time of year that you begin AT, you may live in varying options such as on-campus residence halls (dormitories), homestay (living with an American family), or our Global Community apartments.

Advantages of ATUniversity creditsAT students can earn up to 28 university credits while studying at the ELI — almost the equivalent of the first year of university!

Save time and moneyAT students who take the International First Year option will study Academic English while completing almost all of their first year of university courses. Courses in the AT3 semester are offered at a significant discount.

Academic skill developmentAT students develop study skills, build academic vocabulary, and learn about the expectations of American professors.

Convenient start datesThe AT calendar uses special 4-month semesters. There are 3 start dates for AT each year.

DEFT familiarizes you with the most current methods, approaches and techniques for teaching English.

You will learn from instructors who are members of the University of Delaware faculty who have developed their expertise training English teachers in the U.S. and abroad.

As a model program, the ELI has been visited by hundreds of ESL professionals from the U.S. and by EFL program administrators and teachers from around the world!

Delaware EFL Teacher TraINing (DEFT)The Delaware English as a Foreign Language Teacher Training Program (DEFT) is an intensive program designed to meet the specific needs of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, supervisors or teacher trainers.

Groups: One of the major advantages of DEFT is that it can be tailored to the needs of a group of teachers. Not only can the content be customized, but the program duration can be set according to the needs of the group!

Individuals: DEFT for individuals is a four-week program. The next session of DEFT for individuals will take place January 13 - February 7, 2020.

HousingWhere can you live during your stay at the ELI?

We are happy to help you find a place to live while you are studying in Delaware. Several housing options are already available; however, the type of housing that you can choose may depend on your ELI program.

[email protected]

1. RESIDENCE HALLS - Academic Transitions students can live on campus in the University of Delaware residence halls (dormitories). The rooms are comfortable, furnished and air-conditioned. By living on campus, you can experience college living just like an American student. Staff is available to help with problems and arrange cultural programming. American students live on your floor, but your roommates will be other ELI students.

2. HOMESTAY - You can live with an American family. The ELI Homestay Coorinator finds families who are interested in having international students live in their homes. During your stay there, you will be treated like one of the family members, joining in on outings, traditions and daily family tasks.

3. APARTMENT - Live off-campus in an apartment in Newark. Students in Academic Transitions may live in the Global Community at The Retreat. Most apartments are within biking distance of campus and the ELI, or you can take the University’s free shuttle bus to travel between campus and your apartment.

4. INNternationale - The INNternationale is a residential and conference facility for international students, visiting professors and UD students interested in international living. ELI students who live in the INNternationale normally are mature professionals who are studying at the ELI for a short period of time.
