AREA Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) Activation For Associates Affected by the Recent Hurricanes (continued from page 1)

AREA Emergency Relief Fund for Saipan, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas

Helping in Times of Need An Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) was activated in late October to help our Exchange team members in Saipan

impacted by Typhoon Yutu. Earlier in the month, an ERF was activated to help our Exchange team members

impacted by two Atlantic hurricanes – Florence (Carolinas), Michael (Florida/Georgia). As team members began

the recovery from Florence, Hurricane Michael carved a swath of destruction from the Florida Gulf Coast through

Georgia. Similar devastation has now occurred in Saipan caused by Yutu, a 180 mph category V typhoon. As a

result, the AREA ERF program, which includes financial assistance for our Exchange team members in the four

states affected by both Michael and Florence, has been expanded to provide assistance for team members living

and working in Saipan.

The AAFES Retiree Employees Association (AREA) Emergency Relief Fund serves as a depository for monies

donated for financial assistance to Exchange team members who were impacted by adverse weather conditions.

If you would like to aid our Exchange team members in these locations by making a monetary donation/

contribution of any amount to the AREA Relief Fund, you can do so (1) through AREA’s two GoFundMe credit

card options: Yutu for Saipan and Florence/Michael for the four Atlantic areas at this link: AREA website, or

(2) by check payable to the AREA Emergency Relief Fund and mail to:

AREA-ERF (for Florence/Michael, or Yutu, as applicable)

P.O. Box 380614

Duncanville TX 75138-0614.

Donations to the funds are tax deductible and will be distributed to those who were affected by the hurricanes in

Saipan, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina. Cash donations need to be turned into a money order and

then mailed to the address listed above along with the name and address of the contributor so that AREA can

provide a tax-free donation receipt.

The AREA Emergency Relief Coordinator (AERC) is Chuck Poffenbarger, [email protected]

Both credit card options and the AREA emergency relief program are outlined on the AREA website link.

“I came back this Monday. I was not sure if I was going to have a job or not –

thank God I did. We want to help as much as we can. I love serving the cus-

tomers and doing the best I can for whoever is around. This is the first time I

have experienced something like this. I have been working for AAFES for 25

years, including overseas in Germany and Turkey, New Mexico and here.

I have been here for 17 years. I was lucky and my house is okay, but two of

my sons had to move in with us (including their wives, and my grandbabies,

and dogs). We also had to cancel my youngest child’s wedding. I just thank

God I’m alive and my family is OK.” Janet Soto

Typhoon Yutu’s 180 mph winds overturned cars, knocked down hundreds of power poles and left an island of thousands without a medical center and another without an airport. Buildings were reduced to haphazard piles of tin and wood; if a structure wasn’t made of concrete, one resident said, it was probably wiped out by the most power-ful tropical cyclone to hit any part of the United States since 1935.

The Interior Department’s field representative on Saipan was texting updates Thursday as he hid under his table and part of his roof blew off — and reported that many of the roofs at the island’s community college had blown off, and other schools had sustained serious damage. With ports closed, Saipan’s airport shut down and major power outages taking place, he added, the islands' vibrant tourism sector had suffered a severe blow. “Now with this hurricane, they’re going to have to rebuild again,” he said. “It’s going to take months to get up and running.”

AREA e/NEW SLETTER November 2018 Pag e 7

GUILFORD MCDONALD (retired) in Altha, Florida sent us this email on October 19, 2018:

“Our area was hit by a 120 mph winds causing absolute destruction of most all the trees. Many falling on houses and blocking roads. It took over 3 days to just get major roads clear. Some are still trying to get their driveways open. If houses are livable, you have to hook up a generator for the refrigerator, freezer, tv, charging electronics and well pumps. if you are lucky enough to have a well. Cold showers are the norm. There are many churches acting as PODs (point of distribution(s). PODs provide water, food, and numerous other necessities.

No banks are open yet, so cash is limited. It takes 5 gal of gas each day (or more) to run generators for 10 to 12 hours. Some church groups are coming to clear trees off houses and electric lines. We were fortunate to have a Baptist group clear our front yard and put tarps on our roof. Took them 3 days to do it with crew of 7 and one tractor. Lots of chain saw work being done. Fortunately the weather is supposed to get cooler next week or so. Right now we are in the 80's/90's. But our prayers were answered and no lives were lost in my family.”
