Forms of Energy
What is energy??? Energy –The ability to do work. There are
8 forms of energy.
Chemical
Nuclear
Elastic
Gravitational
Mechanical
Heat
Electrical
Electromagnetic
Forms of EnergyMechanical Energy
Energy of moving objects
Examples:
Running Tornadoes Sound
Forms of EnergyHeat Energy
The motion of atoms in a substance
Examples:
Lava Stove Boiling Water
Forms of EnergyElectrical Energy
The movement of electrons
Examples:
Electricity Lightning Northern Lights
Forms of EnergyElectromagnetic Energy
All types of light or electromagnetic waves
Examples:
Light X-Rays Radio waves
Forms of EnergyChemical Energy
Energy that bonds atoms together in all objects
–released when bonds are broken in chemical
reactions
Examples:
Fuels Firewood Food
Forms of EnergyNuclear Energy
Energy that holds the nucleus of all atoms together–released when nucleus is split or fused with another–most concentrated form of energy in the universeExamples:
The sunNuclear power
Nuclear bombs
Forms of EnergyElastic Energy
Energy in an object due to a change in shape
Examples:
Sling shot Spring Trampoline
Forms of EnergyGravitational Energy
Energy in an object above the ground
Examples:
Skydiver Waterfall Rock Climber
Before we begin . . . A couple of questions
Is energy always active???
Can energy be stored???
Two States of Energy Kinetic Energy – energy that is active, currently
doing something. Anything in motion.
-waves, electrons, atoms, objects
Potential –stored energy (inactive)
–anything that has the possibility of releasing energy
has potential energy

A few things to think about…• Where does energy come from?
• Where does energy go when you use it?
• Can you make energy?
• Can you destroy energy?
The Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, it can only be
changed.
What does this mean?
We don’t make energy, we just change it to a form we
can use!
Energy is constantly changing its form!
